The Competition

The EERI SLC (Student Leadership Council) organizes the EERI’s (Earthquake Engineering Research Institute) Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition every year. It is held during the U.S. National Conference on Earthquake Engineering and the EERI Annual Meeting.The goal of the competition is to build a structure of balsa wood which survives three earthquakes generated by the shake table.

During design, the following design concepts need to be considered: Engineering strength: No structural failure!Engineering Economics: Maximize revenue by increasing �oor area & number of �oorsServiceability: Minimum acceleration and displacement at the top of the structureOwner Requirements: EERI SLC set rules on materials, height and width

The 11th EERI Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition will be held July 21-25, 2014 in Anchorage.

The team

SDC 2014 Team is formed of students of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. Nine of them represent the Faculty of Civil Engineering (years 2, 3, 4) and two the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning (�fth and sixth year). The purpose of the team is to prove that through work and dedication, performance can be done at international level. The structure itself is very sensitive and can be realised only with skill and atten-tion to detail, with a sharp mind and advanced knowledge.
