‘Superbowl.’ 3

Coun. Bob Masse agrees Maple Ridge needs to upgrade its recre-ation infrastructure, which could include new sports fields, a swim-ming pool or maybe even a stadium.

But Monday he voted against tak-ing any more steps towards making that happen until’s he’s sure taxpay-

ers have a clearer idea of the actual numbers and how it will affect their property bills in future years.

“What does it mean to the tax bill? Masse asked Tuesday.

“I think the public needs to know that this is what we’re offering. I just feel that the public should be under-standing it more.”

He also sought clarification on how important it was for the city to have senior governments chip in money.

Council, at its workshop meeting Monday, told staff to put the proj-

ects, everything from new parks and trails to a new museum, into priority and to create a schedule and a public consultation pro-cess so voters can approve or reject any borrowing needed.

He noted that a staff re-port says that borrowing $110 million to pay for the new projects would be fi-nanced by a .75-per-cent property tax increase over eight years, from 2017 to 2024.

That works out to a six-per-cent tax increase over that period, and that’s even without compounding the increase, Masse pointed out.

And when it comes to paying for the operating costs for such facilities, taxpayers will be hit again.

Masse said the annual cost of operating a well-

ness and aquatic centre could be about $1.8 million. That extra sum could produce another three-per-

cent increase in taxes, effectively bringing the increase to nine per cent after eight years.

Then there’s the fact that the taxes that were being used to pay off pre-vious debt, won’t decrease when that debt is retired in 2017, and instead simply will be carried over to pay for new recreation infrastructure.

“The tax implications should be part of the discussions in a way that the people really understand.”

Masse may still support the recre-ation plan, eventually.

Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWSTerry Moffitt with Saxon, winner of best-in-show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City.

B y N e i l C o r b e t [email protected]

A Maple Ridge couple has won what they call the “Superbowl

of dog shows,” thanks to their three-year-old miniature bull terrier, Saxon.

After 40 years in the dog breeding game, David and Terry Moffitt watched their en-try win at Madison Square Gardens in New York City, at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

Saxon had already won almost every-thing possible, and all that was left was the prestigious 140-year-old dog show.

It’s the second longest running sporting event, behind only horse racing’s Kentucky Derby.

It was broadcast by USA Today and was featured on Animal Planet.

The Moffitts knew they had a chance to take best of breed there, at an event featur-ing 2,400 elite show dogs of all breeds, all of them dressed up in designer genes.

“We hoped to win. He was No. 1 up to that point,” said Moffitt.

Saxon, of course, got it done. The mini bull terrier is a scaled-down version of the dog breed Don Cherry made popular with his feisty pet Blue.

Saxon has the perfect shape of head for the breed, the “cobby” muscularity that David says the judges want to see, and he moves like the breed should – like he owns the place.

“He’s got a strutting type of gait pattern.”Saxon swaggered his way to another

championship, on the biggest stage, much to the delight of his owners.

He finished 2015 as a record-breaking

top mini bull in North America.“It was a dream come true for Terry,” said

David. There were family and friends on hand to

watch the big win earlier this month.“It was a family event, and there were

tears shed – tears of joy.”

The Moffitts have lived in Maple Ridge for 22 years, but their dog breeding goes back 40 years. They switched to low-maintenance mini bulls about five years ago. They had enjoyed some success with English cocker spaniels, but nothing like Saxon.

In 2014, he started campaigning, and was

the top mini bull in Canada. This year he became tops in his breed in all of North America.

He won three best-in-show awards, the largest in Albany, Oregon, at a show fea-turing 1,700 dogs.

Based on his year-long performance in the terrier group, which includes more than 30 terrier breeds from Airedales to Cairns, which takes in 10,000 show dogs in North America, Saxon ranked eighth overall – the highest ranking ever for a mini bull.

His profile as a breeding dog couldn’t be higher, and he will probably compete in only a few selected shows in the future.

He’s also a great pet. The family posted a Facebook video of Saxon playing with a two-year-old, and it went viral.

“Way too cute,” is a common post about it.“This guy’s got the sweetest tempera-

ment,” said David of Saxon. His real name is Imaginabulls First Edi-

tion, and he’s kind of a big deal.

They must have known what they were doing, back in 2010, when Maple Ridge res-idents dreamed about the future of the Al-bion flats.

Because after re-viewing those con-cepts Monday for the 133 hectares along Lougheed Highway and 105th Avenue, the current council liked what they saw.

“I think today, no member of council felt that we needed to scrap the designs and go back to the drawing board,” said Mayor Ni-cole Read.

Lots of work from the public went into those concepts, so it’s good to continue those, she added.

“It sounded quite unanimous from coun-cil that we wished to see north [west] of 105th [Avenue] remain agricultural,” along with some agricultur-al-related business tak-ing place there, Read added.

As for the south, or east side of 105th Ave., councillors like the earlier ideas of village commercial, mixed with recreation, along with some space for a small business park.

“We’re very mindful of job creation. So it’s pretty important for us to drive jobs into the city. We don’t want to overlook that opportu-nity on the flats for job creation.”

But what became ap-parent during the dis-cussion is the need to get bus service into the area, the mayor said.

“It’s really important, if we’re going to build out the Albion flats, we’ve got to give people a way to access it, other than by car.”

Read said the brain-storming sessions and community forum held in 2010 had lots of public engagement.

“We’re not really making a lot of chang-es.”

In 2011, instead of sending all four con-cepts to the Agricul-tural Land Commis-sion for comment, as recommended by staff, Maple Ridge council sent a mix of all the concepts. That, how-ever, included develop-ment of the north side of 105th Ave.

The ALC rejected that proposal as a ba-sis for removing land from the agricultural reserve, stalling the planning process.

Coun. Craig Speirs said progress is now being made.

“Option 1 [an ag-ricultural focus, for north of 105th Ave] is what we chose.

“It’s more of a blend we’re looking at for south of 105th.”

That needs more work, though.

Speirs said he’s been working on the is-sue for 12 years, but it’s good that it’s taken time because more possibilities now are apparent.

“I think we under-stand that things need to be different these days. The bricks and mortar of years past just don’t work.” Work-ing, living and shop-ping are all expected to be mixed, he said.

Speirs said Bruce’s Country Market could be a foundation on which to build a com-mercial area. He also envisions an agri-hood,’ where homes and farms are located next to each other and food is produced.

Another part of the mix of future develop-ment could be more recreation facilities that will be added to the sports fields, Albion Fairgrounds and Planet Ice that already exist.

But no location for those has been selected as council tries to pri-oritize its multi-mil-

lion recreation infra-structure program.

Speirs said there’s also still opportunity for commercial devel-opment.

In early 2015, Smart-Centres, now Smart Real Estate Investment Trust, abandoned an earlier proposal to swap some of its land on the north side of 105th Ave. with city land on the south, because costs had changed.

Staff will now look at council comments and make some final ad-justments before coun-cil gives the final OK on an Albion flats plan.

An application to re-move the land on the south side of 105th Ave. from the agricultural reserve, to allow fulfill-ment of that plan, could go to the land commis-sion within six months.

The commission has said it would consider excluding that portion from the reserve, pro-viding drainage was improved on the north side.

“‘Rollin’ coal’ is pol-lution porn for dudes with pickup trucks.” –

If you own a fuel-efficient small car, you might learn

about ‘rollin’ coal’ the hard way – as a victim.

“Rollin’ coal is where diesel truck owners rev their engines to full power in order to spew thick, black smoke from their exhausts.”

A website called The Daily Caller explains how the DIY crowd can modify trucks – about $500 U.S. – for maximum soot ejection. You’d do this to target “hot babes” – lol – but more likely, because you want to get even with President Barack Obama for his liberal environmental protection laws, and asking folks to reduce their carbon footprint.

The Daily Caller says “Prius repellent” (soot) tells “every guy in a pink argyle sweater exactly where you stand.”

Says slate.com, it’s a “use-it-before-the-liberals-ban-it” response, similar to the one that spikes gun purchases in anticipation of tougher ownership laws every time there’s a mass murder.

Naturally, responsible adults – diesel trunk owners like my neighbor – wouldn’t coal roll anyone. On websites, where they share

information like RV pulling power, torque, and reliability, they dismiss rollers as anyone who attaches parts to a good truck for im-mature purpose.

But, sticks and stones can’t break the bones of rollers, or discourage them as long as they can post their triumphs on line, and chortle that they “got one.” They can, easily.

Online coal rolling clubs, fueled by the on-line subculture, are springing up every-where.

Coal rolling is here, too. I recently wit-nessed it at the intersection of 207th Street and Dewdney Trunk Road in Maple Ridge. As a big pickup revved its engine, a thick cloud of smoke from a fat pipe on the pas-senger side of the truck engulfed the little car behind it.

The truck then sped away. “That wasn’t accidental,” I said to my wife.

“That soot bomb was aimed at that car.”“I think you’re right,” she said, recalling an

incident that confused her a week earlier. “I thought the guy was burning oil and should get his car serviced, but it was too much black smoke for that.”

Coal rolling added to road rage can be dangerous. A video of a truck tail-gaiting, and then sooting another vehicle in Langley on June 24th could have resulted in loss of life. RCMP said they’re investigating, and charges might be laid.

But, in most cases, that’s unlikely until the act is more fully recognized for what it is by those who can do something about it.

We can all help by reporting incidents and urging authorities to end it.

“It’s bullying,” said Pitt Meadows Coun. Bruce Bell, who deplored the practice, as did Maple Ridge Coun. Bob Masse.

“It’s polluting,” said the latter. “We should do what we can to stop it.”

Neither had heard of coal rolling before.Coal rolling is violence to others and the

environment. But, said Dan Herbranson, it hasn’t been

brought to the local RCMP attention. “Our traffic services aren’t aware of this.

There’s nothing in the Motor Vehicle Act. It’s not a crime unless you can say he [roller] purposefully spread coal as a way of harass-ment. Then it would be a Criminal Code thing.”

Should coal roller’s engines be checked for polluting?

“With the testing stations being closed, there’s no way to see,” Herbranson said.

Law-makers should head off coal roll-ers on our roads. While they’re at it, they should investigate train horns mounted on some of their pickups. Kits of these toys – guaranteed to make pedestrians on the street, or kids playing in parks, jump – sell online for $49.

Rollers say they’re another source of harmless fun for good ol’ boys.

Lol.

We hope you were all wearing a pink shirt Wednesday to show your support for the anti-bullying campaign.

But we hope that support will extend past the confines of just one day and find its way into your daily life.

In today’s society, it is more important than ever to stand up to bullying in our schools, workplaces, homes and over the Internet.

Some of the behaviour taking over playgrounds is a far cry from kids just being kids, but it’s im-portant to realize that behaviour doesn’t always stop when children outgrow the monkey bars.

Sometimes we forget the impact our words have on others. And in this day and age where, unfor-tunately, a large amount of interactions take place through devices instead of face to face, it’s some-times hard to remember there is another human being on the receiving end of that comment.

It is so easy to descend into the cesspool of ano-nymity that creates devastating situations and in several prominent cases has even led to the death of the targeted individual.

The facade of false courage created by social media seems to chip away at the everyday filters we use to interact with each other in a respectful manner. While most would not say half the things they type to one another, sitting in front of a com-puter screen somehow removes a layer of human-ity from our society.

Sometimes we think we can type or say whatev-er we want while on the Internet, because, let’s be honest, the chances are pretty slim that the person on the receiving end will ever find out who we are. And even if they do, what are they going to do about it? What can they do about it?

More than ever it is important that we remem-ber that the person on the receiving end of our vile comments, unedited rants and tasteless re-marks is a person with feelings, not just another computer.

So we hope you wore a pink shirt: not just to stand up to playground bullies, but to all bullies of all ages.

And tomorrow, we hope you maybe think twice about sending that hurtful email or posting that hateful remark before it goes out into the world and can’t be taken back.

Editor, The News:Re: Pitt airport going to grow (The

News, Feb. 17).I routinely fly a small aircraft and will

tell you that the bulk of the take-offs for circuits, distance flights and landing are toward the west – the direction from which our prevailing winds come for visual flight rules.

In a circuit, the only real power ap-plied is on take-off to about 1,000 feet above ground.

The left turn to downwind, base and final leg are done at low power or idle (little noise and mostly single engine aircraft). Very few residences to the west of the southernmost runway face east and west.

After flying here for over 10 years, on only a handful of occasions have I personally had the direction of take-off flight to the east and over residential areas.

Taking that point further, while at-tending a city council meeting on Feb. 16, I overheard a couple speaking of the excessive noise from the airport. I live on the Fraser in Shoreline and will tell you from my recent experience, the noise is minimal except for some float planes using the river.

The NIMBY folks have also men-tioned to me that with the runway

extension, there will be jumbo planes arriving with freight to serve the ware-house district. Afraid not folks.

Runways are too narrow for 747 freighters to land and take off, besides being too short.

So that one is out with the dishwater, also.

Folks should remember also that all those circuits and flights will train our future pilots for flying commercial. So

the next time you are on a flight going to visit ‘Aunty Milly’ in Toronto, thank that little bit of noise and those great folks who are up front guiding you safe-ly there and home.

I suspect the complainers would complain anyway, so let us proceed to praise the airport and the benefits it provides for the community.

Greg WyattPitt Meadows

Editor, The News:Re: New agreement for Pitt Meadows, Katzie (The News,

Feb. 17).I’m delighted to hear of the new agreement reached with

the Katzie First Nation. Kudos to Chief Susan Millar, May-or John Becker and others for working together and mak-ing this agreement work. I am sure it will be the catalyst to a better future for both our communities.

I liked what Mayor Becker said: “As mayor, one of my utmost priorities is to bring Katzie First Nation back into mainstream consciousness in our community so that the richness of its culture can be embraced and celebrated by the entire community.”

Yes, and along with the new federal Liberal government in Ottawa, that actually cares about First Nations, I believe that the future is bright for First Nations to develop to their full potential. The old attitudes of the past are being replaced by new ones of cooperation and understanding. And, this will pave the way for a better future for all of us!

All the best to Chief Millar and the Katzie First Na-tion and their new agreement. You have a great future ahead of you and we are all proud of you and your cul-ture, which contributes so much to our world.

Kindness Counts is the theme of the district-wide

anti-bullying campaign, which started Wednes-day, Pink Shirt Day.

Members of the Dis-trict Student Advisory Council met Tuesday at Riverside Centre to go over the 356give cam-paign, and brainstorm acts of kindness to per-form and chart on a “Giving Tree” at their in-dividual schools.

Some of those ideas in-clude thanking bus driv-ers by handing out cook-ies at the Maple Ridge bus loop, playing board games with seniors at the local group homes, and greeting students at the door and giving sincere compliments, as wells bake sales to donate to local causes.

A district Giving Tree will be at the district edu-cation office. Each time a school completes an act of giving, a bubble will be added to the tree. The tree will bloom through-out the spring, celebrat-ing all the acts of giving.

“By focusing on giving, we hope children learn empathy and compas-sion and create commu-nities of care,” said Kristi

Blakeway, principal at Harry Hooge elementary and organizer of the pro-gram.

Such trees exist at six local elementary schools, as well.

“District-wide, we are focussing on a positive message as we believe that teaching pro-social behaviour helps all chil-dren,” Blakeway added.

Participants wore their Kindness Counts shirts to kick off the campaign.

“We will focus on acts of giving at the school level and community level from Feb. 24 until May 30. On May 30, we will have a district-wide

‘Big Give,’ where we host our annual student leadership conference. All day long, students from SD42 will be out in the community giving back,” Blakeway said.

The 365give Chal-lenge is a powerful tool that inspires educa-tors to teach children to be good citizens. The program supports and enhances educa-tor’s daily curriculum while satisfying school board objectives, assist-ing teachers with lesson plans, classroom strate-gies and useful teaching tools without creating extra work.

According to the Na-tional Institute of Health, people who give to their community experience a “warm glow” effect. Giv-ing to others activates the regions of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection and trust. Recreation from frontCity of Maple Ridge

finance general manager Paul Gill said there is a capacity to deal with op-erating and capital costs for new recreation facili-ties.

He said Masse’s num-bers are accurate, but noted that putting in a small tax increase over many years can build ca-pacity and prevent hav-ing to raise taxes three per cent in a year.

“Eight years is a long period of time when it comes to trying to phase things in.”

And it’s too early still to say what the exact num-

bers will be. Costs may be higher or lower. Se-nior government grants or partnerships could reduce costs further.

“The parks and recre-ation master plan was adopted some yeas ago and it was always un-derstood that it needed significant funding at-tached to it to become a reality, otherwise it’s just a document,” Gill said.

He said it’s easier for people to understand a .75-per-cent tax increase per year and that it’s hard to predict exactly how much taxes will climb after eight years.

“Nothing happens

without the assent of the elector. So the public will have its say.”

Masse questions if any federal dollars are com-ing for city projects, such as a new swimming pool.

“What I’ve seen so far coming from the fed-

eral government doesn’t align with [funding] parks and leisure.”

He pointed out that an aquatic and wellness centre costing $70 mil-lion could use up most of the $110 million in the proposed borrowing plan.

Masse said Monday’s discussion was helpful, “but at this point, I still don’t think I like the or-der of things.”

Coun. Gordy Robson also voted against the advancing the project because of what he said was a lack of senior government funding or partnerships.

Marijuana from frontHe’s concerned that

other medicinal mari-juana stores that are open now could have a head start once federal laws are loosened.

“I would hate to be told two years from now, because there are too many in the area that have opened ille-gally.

“I feel I needed to speak up and be pre-pared for what’s to come.”

Meanwhile, he says liquor sales in bars have been declining, although liquor sales in stores are doing well. He’d like to open up a store to sell medical and recreational mari-juana above his bar on Lougheed Highway.

“I will not open the doors until everything is legal and I have coun-cil’s blessing and the proper licences.”

He asked council if stores selling marijuana open now will have an advantage?

“Ultimately, the fed-eral government’s po-sition is that these are illegal,” said Mayor Ni-

cole Read. “So we can-not issue a business li-cence to a business that is not legal.

“Right now, we are just dealing on the real-ity that these are not le-gal in our community.”

Maple Ridge is waiting for Ottawa to change the law, after which the city will make its own laws in accordance with federal legislation.

Public works general manager Frank Quinn said the legal lines are blurred “between what’s legal and what’s perceived to be legal.”

This week, the Federal Court of Canada ruled that people can grow small amounts of their own marijuana for me-dicinal use.

Fairfax repeated his hope that when mari-juana is legalized, that businesses with prior operating histories will be considered in-stead of businesses that opened illegally.

“It just doesn’t seem fair for those that would wait and do it legally.”

Coun. Craig Speirs said moving towards legalization will be a

transition, and advised that the federal govern-ment should be con-tacted.

Coun. Gordy Robson said if council has a chance, it will consider his points.

“We’re waiting,” he added.

“I’m sorry we can’t give you more informa-tion on this, but unfor-tunately it’s just not our jurisdiction, and it is really out of our hands. It’s just as frustrating for us,” said Coun. Ki-ersten Duncan.

Colleen Briere, with Weeds, Glass and Gifts, a medicinal cannabis shop that opened four months ago on 225th Street, welcomes the ruling that allows peo-ple to grow their own medical marijuana.

Many people can’t grow their own because they’re too sick or just don’t want to bother.

Neither was she wor-ried about major drug store chains possibly selling medical mari-juana, comparing the industry to the fast food business, where there’s lots of competition.

The Hammond Com-passion Society store opened last October on Maple Crescent, while The Always Growing Green store on 224th Street opened in 2009.

Briere said business is good at her store, though not as busy as she thought. Her father Don started the chain, which now has stores across Canada.

The store provides medicinal marijuana to people who belong to a compassionate society and who have a doctor’s note saying they need or are prescribed me-dicinal marijuana.

“We have little old la-dies and men who have never drunk before,” getting edible marijua-na to relieve systems.

Medical marijuana has also helped Briere’s 20-year-old son, who has a brain tumour.

Briere said voters in the last federal election showed they want mar-ijuana legalized.

“People are waiting to see what they do with it.”

The current Marijua-na for Medical Purpos-es Regulations intend for people to buy their medicinal marijuana from large producers by mail.

The Federal Court of Canada this week struck down regula-tions requiring licensed medical marijuana us-ers to buy from Otta-wa-approved growers, giving people the green light to continue grow-ing at home.

The ruling is suspend-ed for six months, but the four B.C. residents who launched the court challenge had their growing licences pro-tected under an earlier interim order. Thou-sands of people in B.C. and across Canada re-ceived licences to either grow pot themselves or designate someone else to do it, before the Con-servative government attempted to restrict production to large commercial growers who sent it by mail.

Federal Court Judge Michael Phelan ruled that preventing people from growing mari-juana for medical pur-poses violates Section 7 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which guarantees “the right to life, liberty and security of the person.”

I am a little embarrassed to reveal that the inspiration for this article came from a bathroom read – specifically

the back cover of this year’s West Coast seed catalogue.

The caption “help the planet by planting more sunflowers” caught my attention and by the time I had gone through the 10 points that followed. I was really impressed. Don’t get me wrong, I like sunflowers, but my grade school addiction to the seeds and my admiration for those giant specimens at the community garden was about as far as my imagination took me.

What I didn’t know was how versatile this plant is in terms of potential uses and the benefits it provides average gardeners like myself.

The history of the sunflower (Helianthus annuus) goes back to 3000 B.C., when the Hopi and Navaho of New Mexico and Arizona cultivated it as a food crop with seeds ranging from white, red and black.

It was brought back to Europe in the late 16th Century by Spanish explorers, but the plant’s real renaissance occurred in 1830s Tsarist Russia, where it underwent intensive breeding to create oil-bearing and eating types, many of which (‘Russian Mammoth’) are still available to this day.

Of course, we have to give it a cultural nod, as this humble flower was the inspiration for many of Van Gogh’s iconic paintings – most of which were painted as gifts for fellow impressionist, Paul Gauguin.

Then there are the health benefits it provides; 100 grams of shelled sunflower seeds provides 42 per cent protein, 36 per cent dietary fiber, at least 23 per cent Vitamin B, 100 per cent Vitamin E of your daily value needs, and the phytosterols they contain helps to lower blood cholesterol levels.

But their presence in our gardens makes an even bigger impact, as they attract pollinators from great distances

and provide both native and domestic bees with a valuable food source.

Beneficial insects such as ladybugs (which eat those nasty aphids) are also attracted by sunflowers, and even our drier summers can’t put a damper on things, as they are quite drought resistant.

You can plant oil types (such as ‘Peredovik’) or even the edible seed varieties, such as ‘Titan’ and ‘Giganteus,’ and just leave them to ripen and dry in the garden, after which many of our winter birds (chickadees) will feast on them.

Sunflowers also make great cuts for floral arrangements and come in a wide variety of colours for this purpose.

A few choice selections include ‘Teddy Bear’ (chubby double flowers), ‘Velvet Queen’ (burgundy red), ‘Autumn Beauty’ (yellow to bronze) and ’Lemon Queen’ (pale yellow).

On a more serious note, Sunflowers are grown to absorb and extract heavy metals, such as lead and arsenic, from contaminated soils and are being trialed at Fukushima and Chernobyl as a means of extracting strontium and caesium from ground water affected by those nuclear catastrophes.

Then there are the multiple everyday uses of this versatile plant, including biofuel (even the hulls can be burned), healthy cooking oil, latex and animal feed.

That is quite a resume for such a humble plant, which means that it should have a place in all of our gardens.

Growing sunflowers really isn’t that hard provided you follow a few simple rules. They are best sown directly anytime from mid April through to late May. They prefer good drainage and sun, with plenty of compost in the soil and when the plants are a foot tall, water them with one teaspoon of borax (boron) dissolved in 1.5 cups of water spread over 15 inches – as this will give you really big seeds.

The Ridge Meadows Flames, for the second straight game, missed out on eliminating the Mission Out-laws, falling 3-2 in overtime again.

The local junior B hockey team lost in the same fashion to the Har-old Brittain Conference leaders on the weekend, but remain up in the

first-round playoff series, 3-2.Game 6 will be played Friday at

Planet Ice in Maple Ridge, 7:30 p.m.The Flames led 2-0 after two pe-

riods Tuesday in Mission on power play goals by Cameron Alder and Bradley Crompton. Boston Colley assisted on both. Nolan Ferguson also picked up a helper.

Mission, however, scored twice in the third, then Brody Dyck con-verted a rebound 14 seconds into overtime.

Mission outshot Ridge 50-33. Ja-

son Sandhu made 47 saves for the Flames.

Flames head coach Bayne Ryshak attributed the loss to a bit of inexpe-rience. The Flames had chances ear-ly and converted on a few of them, he said, but then sat back and played tentative, trying to protect the lead.

“We went into a bit of a shell and it cost us,” he said.

Still, Ryshak added, the players re-main confident. He’s told them not to worry about the past two games, but to focus on playing the way that

gave them the lead in the series – keeping it simple, rolling four lines.

And when they get the chance, “put the final nail in the coffin.”

Playing at home Friday, where they are comfortable, he said, should help.

Strength training programs come in many pos-

sible combinations and permutations considering the variables involved – sets, repetitions, weight, technique, speed of movement, weekly schedule and periodiza-tion to name a few.

One of the ways to potentially alter your routine is to alter the sequence that the exercises progress in the session. This had led to various routines being developed over time to try and maximize the training effect, such as circuit, super-setting, pre-exhaustion.

All these methods are basically varying the ex-ercise order from largest muscle groups first, pro-gressing to smallest last, or, in turn, from smallest to largest, or something in between.

In pre-exhaustion pro-grams, the idea is to take a multi-joint, multi-mus-cle exercise and before performing that exercise, isolate the largest muscle involved and exercise it first (thereby pre-exhausting it) in order to make the multi-muscle exercise more effective.

Since the 1990s, there has been a presumption that the most beneficial method is to exercise the larger muscles first. Is that true? Does the exact order matter that much to the overall effective-ness of the program?

Unfortunately, to date, there have only been a small number of studies done on this question. There were two done in 2003 and 2007 that looked at the acute responses of the pre-ex-haustion method, the first using 17 male subjects and the second with 13 male subjects.

One experimental group performed a pre-exhaust format of an isolation exercise fol-lowed by the multi-joint companion, while the other group performed the multi-joint exercise alone, both using a 10 repetition maximum load.

In the 2003 study researchers found that the pre-exhaust group performed fewer repeti-tions than the standard leg press group with lower muscle activation.

The 2007 study found an equal number of reps performed, but a lower load lifted in the pre-

exhaust group compared with the bench press only group.

In order to address this

question of longer term muscle growth and test the chronic adaptations of varying exercise order, two studies were done in 2010 which had one group perform exercises from larger, multi-muscle

groups down to small, single muscles at the end.

In both studies, strength gains were significant for all muscles, but there was an interest-ing result: in both studies, the exercises that were

performed first in the sequence had greater gains than the ones done at the end, regardless if they were large or small muscles.

The results show that the evidence for pre-ex-

haustion routines is lack-ing and that to make the most out of your strength workouts, you should put the most important muscles you want to train near the beginning of your session.

COPELANDClive

Clive passed away peacefully in hos-pital on Feb 16, 2016 with his wife by his side. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1936 and moved to Canada as a teenager with his Mother in 1952. He lived in many cities in Ontario, Quebec and Scotland and moved to Vancouver in 1989 and later to Maple Ridge, BC. Clive had a keen intellect, a great sense of humour, and was talented at whatever he tried (including cooking). For those who understood him and/or accepted him as he was, he was truly a precious treasure with a kind and beautiful soul.

Clive was predeceased by his parents Jane and Andrew Copeland. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 26 years Heather, daughter Kathryn Copeland with grandson Conal, son Andrew Copeland (Selina), sister-in-laws Debbie Doyle (Peg) and Patricia Ruscigno, and cousins Alan Jollie (Fiona), Eileen Henderson (Sandy), Patricia Banyard (Bill), and Sheila Morin (Sonny). Clive also leaves behind many nephews and nieces in Scotland and Canada as well as his previous wife Jean Trask in Ontario. Clive will also be missed by his good friend of many years Steve Welch.

Thank you to Dr. D. Sauder and the 2West staff for their excellent care of Clive during his 3 weeks in hospital. A very special thank you to Dr. Dennis Chapman for providing his amazing expertise and compassionate care to Clive over the many years.

There will be no service by request.

February 17, 1952 - February 16, 2016

Before the sun rose on Feb-ruary 16th, our Mom, Donna left us to be with her Best Friend, the Love of her Life ...her Kenny. February 17th she would have celebrated her 64th Birthday... or the 8th Anniversary of the day we lost our Dad, her beloved hus-band. So instead, our parents celebrated her Birthday to-gether, once again watching a baseball game, listening to CCR or Rod Stewart with their dogs Monty and Peggy-Sue close by. Donna is sur-vived by her devoted & lov-ing parents, Earl & Doreen. Her children, Kammy (Mark), Tyler (Alison), Imre (Cheryl),
