Hamper society brings Christmas joy to all

Society’s gift shop may be packed full of stuffed animals, dolls, toy trucks and board games, but organizer Lorraine Bates can’t wait for them to be empty.

Toys belong under Christmas trees, after all, and the Christmas Hamper Society helps put them there for many local families who might otherwise go without.

“We see a lot of single parents, people who are down on their luck,” says Bates. “It can be a hard time of year for a lot of

families ... but that’s no reason to go without Christmas.”

Last year, more than 550 families registered with the Ridge Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, with close to 1,000 children receiving a Christmas present from the local charity. Bates says the numbers have jumped sharply in the past two years as families struggle with the sluggish economy.

With two weeks to go until Christmas, 520 families have already signed up this year.

Families who sign up with the Christmas Hamper Society

must provide a care card, proof of residency, and photo ID. Families can fill out a wish list, and registered families will also be able to visit Rudolf’s Gift Shoppe on Dec. 18 to pick up gently used clothes and toys for free.

Children had the opportunity to chose a gift for their parents or guardians at the Kids Only Gift Shop on Saturday, with hundreds taking part. To be eligible, families just have to prove with their rent, phone and hydro bills, that they simply to do not have any money left.

“That’s the highlight for me,” says Bates. “I love to see these kids faces when they come out with a gift for their mom or dad.”

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society has been based out of the Albion Fairgrounds for 14 years now, and has expanded its gift shop for this year, doubling it in size.

“The District of Maple Ridge has been very good to us,” says Bates. “We would not be able to do what we do without its support.”

Close to 100 volunteers make the Christmas Hamper Society happen every year, including several inmates from the Fraser Regional Correct ions Centre, who are taking part in a work release program.

The inmates are all non-violent and at the end of their sentence, Bates notes.

“They are very polite,” she said. “They do an amazing amount of work.”

Extra volunteers will be at the ready around the clock the week before Christmas to make sure no one goes without.

“The closer you get to Christmas, the sadder the stories get,” says Bates.

Families fl eeing abuse, families who have lost their home to fi re, and families who have lost a loved one have all had to rely on the Christmas Hamper Society.

“Sometimes you think

you’re going to be all right, then something unfortunate happens,” says Bates. “Identify yourself. There’s nothing wrong in asking for help.”

In addition to gifts for under the C h r i s t m a s tree, the H a m p e r Society also provides a

food hamper for breakfast Christmas morning, complete with bacon, eggs, milk bread. Turkeys are also available for Christmas dinner.

“Our job is to take care of one day of the year,” says Bates.

There are many ways to contribute to the Christmas Hamper Society, with either toys, time, or money.

For those wanting to donate, donation boxes are set up at Haney Place Mall and Valley Fair Mall in Maple Ridge for the public to drop off any new unwrapped gifts.

The society is also accepting cash, cheques,

new unwrapped toys, good second hand clothes/toys/household articles (please no large furniture) and gifts that are suitable for the children to give to their parents.

Earlier this month, staff at the Haney Hotel once again took part in the annual Strip-a-thon fundraiser, generating close to $20,000 for the Christmas Hamper Society.

“They are our biggest contributor by far,” says Bates. “I can’t imagine what we would do without them.”

Bates said cash donations are down this year, however, donations of gifts are up, and there are more people wanting to sponsor individual families.

But even if you can’t adopt an entire family, there are ways to give, including buying specifi c gifts from a families wish-list.

“To adopt a whole family, it’s a lot of money,” says Bates. “But for $20 you can still feel like you are a part of it.”

The Christmas Hamper Society is always in need of toys for adolescent kids, and gift certificates for places like Haney Place Mall, or Cineplex Odeon Cinemas are perfect.

The bulk of toys will be distributed for this Christmas by Dec. 18. However, anything donated afterwards will be stockpiled for next year.

“I think we make a lot of people happy,” Bates says. “That’s what it’s all about, putting smiles on kids faces.”

gone and so when someone comes to your door from now until Christmas ask-ing for a donation, be aware and have questions ready, it may be a trick.

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Ham-per Society is reminding the public that there are still impostors on the streets collecting food, toys and

cash donations and claim-ing to be representing the Christmas Hamper Society.

“In the last few years there have been several in-cidences of misrepresenta-tion,” said Lorraine Bates, organizer for the local Christmas Hamper Society.

“Some impostors identify themselves with organiza-tion names that are very similar to our society’s to

confuse and take advantage of the donors.”

The Maple Ridge–Pitt Meadows Christmas Ham-per Society never solicits door to door or my phone, she says.

If you are planning to donate this year, call the Christmas Hamper Soci-ety offi ce. Staff will let you know will guide you to a drop-off location for any

donations. If you have a do-nation to be picked up, the Christmas Hamper Society offi ce will advise you of the name of the volunteer that will coming, and that per-son will have photo ID to present to you.

Canadian Pacifi c’s annual Holiday Train returns to Maple Ridge next week as

it makes a stop at Port Haney Sta-tion to help raise funds and dona-tions for the local food bank.

It’s the 12th year for the CP Holiday Train fundraiser, which arrives in town at 7:45 p.m. on Fri-day, Dec. 17. Two specially deco-rated freight trains are trekking across six Canadian provinces and eight U.S. states as part of the annual event.

“The Holiday Train’s mandate remains strong and that is to help tackle hunger, regardless of bor-ders or size of community,” said Fred Green, President and CEO of Canadian Pacifi c. “At this criti-cal time of year, CP employees and thousands of volunteers in Canada and the United States are again joining together in helping those less fortunate.”

Residents in about 140 cities and towns on both sides of the border will be able to join the Holiday Train spirit and magic, with all food and money raised at each stop staying in that community

for local distribution. Each Holiday Train has 14 rail

cars decorated with hundreds of thousands of festive lights. In-cluded is a modifi ed box car that has been turned into a traveling stage for performers. The two trains are assembled and decorat-ed by CP employees in Montreal,

Smith Falls and Calgary. Since 1999, the CP Holiday Train

program has raised $4.8 million and generated almost 2.3 mil-lion pounds of food donations for local food shelves. In that time they have traveled 85,764 miles - enough to go around the world 3.5 times.

“With our HungerCount 2010 survey showing a 9.2 per cent in-crease in Canadians turning to their local food shelves in 2010 compared to 2009, the CP Holiday Train is a unique and creative pro-gram that gives people an oppor-tunity to support their local food banks,” said Katharine Schmidt,

Executive Director of Food Banks Canada.

Performing the spirit of the season from a specially designed stage on the Canadian Holiday Train is one of Canada’s most ver-satile bands, The Odds.

Canadian Pacifi c has also re-leased a 2010 Holiday Train CD, called Holiday Train Tracks. From rock and country songs to Christ-mas classics, this 13-track compi-lation disc features a number of recognized Canadian musicians and ambassadors of the Holiday Train including The Odds, Shaun Verrault, Melanie Doane, Kelly Prescott and the Barenaked La-dies. All proceeds go to support-ing North American food banks .
