Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS Spare change can change lives The dulcet tones of Errol Weiss’s unique rendition of Jin-  gle Bells can be heard across the parking lot in front of the Save- on-Foods at Valley Fair Mall in Maple Ridge. But what Weiss may lack in musical ability, he makes up for in earnestness, and his toothy grin proves to be infec- tious to the shoppers passing by. “My smile is their smile,” he says with a chuckle. Weiss and his friend Asha Dutt are two of the many volunteers who have staked out busy side- walks and street corners across Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to help raise money for the Sal- vation Army’s Christmas Kettle Campaign. It’s well below freezing this day, but the pair is bundled against the cold, complete with Santa hats. Weiss and Dutt create a  jangly din with the constant ring- ing of their hand bells, and the many shoppers respond, drop- ping whatever change they can muster into the iconic red plastic kettle. “This is my rst year as a vol- unteer,” says Weiss. “It’s great. It makes me feel good about my- self.” Even in the cold, a simple act of charity can warm the heart. All of the money raised locally by volunteers like Weiss and Dutt, stays locally, says Miriam Leslie, the Salvation Army’s Ket- tle Campaign organizer for Maple Ridge and Pitt Mea dows. “This is the single biggest fund- raiser for The Caring Place,” she said. The homeless shelter and out- reach centre located at the corner of Lougheed Highway and Haney Bypass serves 9,000 meals every month, and provides temporary shelter for the homeless for up to one week. The shelter’s cold weather program also provides an additional 30 spots during the winter months. The Caring Place also manages transitional housing for stays of three months to three years. Last year the kettle campaign raised $68,000, a local record. Leslie said the shelter is hoping to best that mark this year, with a goal of $72,000. “The kettles are what keeps [The Caring Place] running,” she says. The history of the campaign dates back to the 1891 in San Francisco, and has since spread around the world, along with the Salvation Army’s ministries. Currently, the Salvation Army has about 20 volunteers taking part in the kettle campaign locally, but Leslie is hoping for 50 to 100 to come forward by the end of the Christmas season. Many of those volunteering are have had to use the shelter at some point and want to give some- thing back, Leslie says. “Many of the people have been there and want to help pay back,” says Leslie. “They’re grateful for the help they’ve received.” Due to the continued economic downturn, Leslie says more people are use The Caring Place’s ser- vices than ever before.
