Hayes was impressed by the turnout and the entertainment – especially that from the younger participants, including Showstoppers, which he described as “an incredible display of children’s talent.” “It just warms my heart to hear children sing carols,” he said. The mercury had dropped well below freez- ing and with a cold north wind it felt even colder, but Hayes didn’t think the children minded too much. “The kids just ignore the cold – it’s more the par- ents that notice the chill,” he said. • Neighbours come together to helpreplace a familys stolen decorations.by Eric [email protected]

When 19-year-old Eric Moffat left forschool on the morning of Dec. 3, he steppedoutside and got an unfortunate surprise. His familys front lawn usually adorned

with Christmas decorations this time ofyear had been stripped clean overnight bythieves.Moffat guessed that between $500 and

$1,000 worth of goods were stolen. Itemstaken included a few inflatable decorationssuch as a six-foot tall Santa and an 11-footChristmas tree. For Moffats neighbours in west Maple

Ridges McKinney Creek Estates, this theftis just the latest in a disturbing trend thatsbeen plaguing the complex during the pastthree months.Theres been multiple garage and car

thefts, said Gail Salconi, a neighbour of theMoffats and a member of the strata council.

But this is the first time theyve goneafter Christmas stuff, Salconi explained, believing two different types of thieves areat work. The first group seem to be people who

are going after the tools and contractors, she said. The second, she speculates, is justkids pulling a nasty prank. All the timers and expensive cords were

left. It was just the figures that were taken like a grab and dash.Moffat said he and his family have been

building on the display since 2005 or 2006,and have never had an issue. Some unexpected good has come out of

this, though. Salconi said the thefts haveactually brought the strata community closerwith about half of the 34 neighbours in thecomplex coming together to buy new decor-ations for the Moffat family.

John and Susan Russellsholiday display featureseverything from twinklinglights to movie props.by Eric [email protected]

It begins around RemembranceDay and lasts until early January. Its the Christmas display at

the home of John and SusanRussell.John, a 30-year resident of

Maple Ridge, has lived at his cur-rent address for the past sevenyears. He said his display is con-

stantly evolving and changingand that hes not quitting anytime soon.Ive been

building thiscollectionfor about 15years, hesaid. No two

years areexactlythe same.Somethingwill get removed and anotheritem will replace it.He added that many of the

decorations are souvenirs ofvacation trips that he and hiswife have taken. There are other decorations

unique to his display as well. The Santa statue and the

Snowman are movie props that Ibought from CanAm, he said. The display is not simply just

for show, however. Russellsaid in addition to being fullyinteractive and family-friendly,he also uses it as a way to col-lect donations for the Friends InNeed Food Bank.Theres bins outside with

signs on them that I put outevery evening and take in everynight, he said.Russell noted that the idea for

the donations came from a differ-ent but also popular celebration:Halloween.I had always collected for

the food bank during Halloweenand thought, why not involveChristmas? Its the season of giv-ing after all.Regardless of which display it

is, Russell said both are incred-ibly popular and people eagerlylook forward to his work.We have people that come

by at Halloween and tell us theycant wait until Christmas andpeople will ask us at Christmaswhat were doing for next yearsHalloween, he said. For those who want to check

it out themselves, the displayruns nightly at 23050 125A Ave.,starting at sundown, seven daysa week until early January.

    Our View

    Saving livesnot difficult

You can save a life today. When we think of saving a life, we

think of someone jumping into freezingwater to rescue people trapped in a carthat slid off an icy road, or a firefighterrunning into a burning building to pullout a child.

Most of us will never attempt a dar-ing rescue, yet any of us by register-ing ahead of time could save one ormore lives through organ donation.

Last week, some of the people whoare still here because they receivedthe gift of life took part in OperationPopcorn, visiting B.C. hospitals, includ-ing a stop at Ridge Meadows Hospital,to deliver festive tins of popcorn tostaff in hospital intensive care units, emergency departments, and operatingrooms.

In 2013, 314 organ transplants wereperformed throughout B.C., up from284 the year before. Some, such as 120kidney transplants and three liver trans-plants, were from living donors. Butmost, including 95 kidney transplants,53 liver transplants, 19 heart transplantsand 15 lung transplants, were fromdeceased donors.

As of November, 507 B.C. residentswere on a wait-list for a transplant.According to Transplant BC, 85 per centof B.C. residents support the conceptof organ donation, yet only 19 per centhave registered their decision. You cando so online with your CareCard in lessthan two minutes at transplant.bc.ca, orthrough the form that comes with yourdrivers licence renewal.

My husband, Ted, had his singlelung transplant six-and-a-half years ago,and it changed our lives forever, LynneFraser of Nanaimo said.

We celebrated our 40th anniversary,Ted had his 65th birthday, and oursons, Jeff and Matt, have a father. Wefeel very fortunate to join other trans-plant families to say thank you to themedical staff who are so important toorgan donation and transplant.

As this will be our familys first Christmaswithout Dad, I thought Id share one of hisfavourite and de rigueur for the entire family Christmas/New Years Eve recipes.Preparing oliebollen involves deep frying,

which is not considered very healthy thesedays but Dad was just a month shy of his 99thbirthday when he left us this summer.Perhaps the reason he lasted so long despite

the oliebollen was because, like most Dutch fam-ilies, we only made and ravenously devoured the delicious morsels at Christmas and on NewYears Eve.

Youll need:1 tsp sugar2 packets (1 tbsp) dry yeast4 cups all-purpose flour cup sugar2 eggs2 cups lukewarm milk1 tsp salt6 cups canola oilOptional: a few handfuls (Moms

measure!) of raisins or (Dads favourite)apple in small pieces

Serve with: light dusting of cinnamon(optional) and a bowl of icing sugar (not optional)Prepare yeast by mixing 1 tsp sugar in cup

very warm (but not hot) water, and sprinkleyeast over top. Allow to stand 10 minutes should foam and bubble if yeast is still active(alive). Now stir the yeast in.In a large bowl, mix flour and cup sugar.

Make a well in the middle and add yeast mix-ture, eggs, and half the lukewarm milk. Mix untilall well combined. Add the rest of the milk andmix or whisk until smooth.Let the bowl stand in a warm place for about

an hour (best to cover it with waxed paper or abarely damp cloth, not touching the batter). When the batter has doubled, mix in 1 tsp salt

(and add the raisins or apple pieces, if thats theway your oil flows).

Heat oil in a deep fryer (or a deep pan butbe VERY careful!) Get the oil to about 350F not hot enough will leave your oliebollen raw inthe middle and unpalatably oily on the outside, and too hot will burn the outside of your oliebol-len, the oil, and maybe your house!A trick Ive heard of (but have not yet tried,

personally) is to stick the wrong end of a wood-en spoon in the oil if the oil is hot enough, bubbles will form around the wood.Using two tablespoons (greased by dipping

them into the hot oil), scoop and release blobsof dough from the bowl into thefryer. Dip the dough ball in theoil before releasing it by scrapingit from one spoon with the other.Caution! Dropping the balls

into the oil from a height cancause injurious splashing. The raw oliebollen will sink to

the bottom of the fryer, and thenfloat to the top.Dont put in more than can

float loosely together across thesurface of the oil.Fry until golden brown all

around they will flip over eas-ily when the bottom side is done (and may evenflip themselves, at the right moment somethingthat fascinated us as we watched Mom createthese un-holey doughnut-like treats).Remove with a slotted spoon and place to

drain on paper towel.Serve warm (although theyre pretty good

cold, too). Some folks like a light dusting of cin-namon, though we rarely bothered. Add eithera serious dusting of icing powder or (almostalways instead) a bowl of icing sugar on theside, for dipping.Store leftover oliebollen (if there are any!) at

room temperature in airtight container for abouttwo days, or freeze them for a couple of months(good luck, they should last that long). Warm inoven or microwave when you simply cant holdback any longer.

Dear Editor,With the joy of the

Christmas season fastapproaching, rememberthose who are less fortunatein our society. There are many in our

for the poor and needy. All of those cutbacks are

happening by right-winggovernments that care littlefor the average citizen whostruggles to pay hydro andheating bills.B.C. has the highest rate

ernments then proceed tocut services or make therest of us pay more andmore for all of the serviceswe need to survive on. Itsnot rocket science to figureout why were all having topay more for lifes essentialsthese days. But when youre poor, it

becomes increasingly dif-ficult to pay those hydrobills and still be able to feedyourselves or family. The rich elites have no

  • A8 Tuesday, December 10 , 2013 Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows Times

Yesterday, Maple Ridge council started its annualpublic budgeting process. When it is over, coun-cil will decide how much our property taxes aregoing to increase next year. The answer is, a lot! While Pitt Meadows council seems to have understood

the publics anger about property tax increase, MapleRidge council still doesnt get it.Pitt Meadows has underway the largest new indus-

trial development in the valley. They have just got theAgriculture Land Commission to designate more landcommercial than Maple Ridge has in its core. They seemto have a vision, which should lighten the burden onresidential taxpayers in the City of Pitt Meadows. The public process Maple Ridge council is going

through has becomeincredibly transparentwith so much informationthat it boggles the mind ofanybody trying to under-stand it.A simple question like,

How much did we spendthis year compared tolast year? leads to a halfhour discussion of reservefunds and budget alloca-tions. Go to their website. The bureaucracy of the

municipality, by its culture, sincerely believes that prop-erty taxes should increase at least four or five per centevery year to serve the community better. This belief is reinforced by the senior bureaucrats our

town has, who make well over $100,000 per year, ourCEO over $200,000.This year council must have been given a wake-up call,

because about a month ago they publicly raised the issueabout the lack of industrial and commercial developmentin Maple Ridge. (As if this is the first time they knewthis.) Probably the bureaucrats have explained to themthat, because of the lack of that kind of development, residential property taxpayers will again have to carry theburden. If you examine your tax bill in detail, you will discover

that, with the regional government and utility fees, theincrease will be much more than five per cent. The mayor and council having been told they have to

publicly justify an unreasonable tax increase again, intheir frustration, they resurrected the issue of industrializ-ing the Pelton lands. The idea that council would re-raisethis issue a month after they gave up their (our) localrights to rezone land like this to the Metro Vancouverbrings their credibility into question. It is disappointing to see that council has another study

underway that will give them no more information thanthey already have from the previous studies.Council has a current opportunity to rezone the 52

acres owned by the department of highways (which werebought for the bridge that has since been built to PittMeadows) to the best use for the community. It is interesting to note in this discussion about indus-

trial lands that none of the councillors are prepared todiscuss the empty industrial park at north 256th Street, which is empty because there is no access or the southAlbion industrial area, which will only succeed with anoverpass and flood protection. If you are upset about your property taxes, now is the

time to storm the municipal hall. Whether it be by email, phone calls, or going down and participating in the publicprocess, the alternative is to lie back and let them havetheir way with you again.Just saying

Friday night in Langley,a teen from the MapleRidge Figure Skating Clubexperienced what maywell be a once-in-a-lifetimeopportunity.

    by Troy [email protected]

The chill that sunk itsfrozen teeth into MapleRidge was a samplingof what life was like forEmily Bator growing up inGrande Prairie, Alta.Taking into account that

folks in Grande Prairie arebraving finger-numbing tem-peratures in the minus-mid-20sCelcius on average, its T-shirtweather, here. With this in mind, Grande

Prairie is an ideal training groundfor a figure skater. It snows there eight months

out of the year, related Bator,a 17-year-old member of theMaple Ridge Figure SkatingClub who was a guestperformer at FridaysHoliday On Iceshow at the LangleyEvents Centre. Icesports were one ofthe only things youcould do there. Thereare ice rinks outside wewould skate on. It was acommunity thing.Bator felt the heat Friday

night, skating in front ofscores of fans while sharingice time with figure skatingicons including Elvis Stojko,Kurt Browning, and 2010Olympic bronze medalistJoannie Rochette. It was awesome, Bator

said. The jumps werentas great as they were inpractice but the performance def-initely was there. At the end of theprogram, I didnt even care. It wasso much fun.HOI organizers asked the Maple

Ridge club to enter one of its skat-ers in the show and Bator wastapped. They were trying to figure out

who would be best person to

send, Bator said. They asked me to goand skate. I had just gotback from provincials andI skated really well. Mycoach was really proud ofme.

    Regarding the afore-mentioned provincial

championships heldin Richmond Nov.7-10, Bator placed

eighth amongst a huge-ly competitive field of skat-

ers in the Junior Ladies (U19)category.Julianne Delaurier won the event

with Kelsey Wong placing second. Both skaters compete internation-ally for Canada.B.C. is a powerhouse in figure

skating right now and if Emilyhad competed or lived in anotherprovince, she would be movingon to compete against the rest ofCanada, MRFSC coach Regan

Taylor said. In fact, there are many skatersthat are not as strong asher from other provincesthat will get to advance.Taylor added, All

seven skaters that placedahead of her representthe two training centresin B.C., so she is theonly skater that repre-sents a local skating clubat that level.A year-and-a-half ago,

Bator won the provincialtitle in STARskate, a

non-competitive stream.Since that is as high as that level

of figure skating can go, Batordecided to enter the competitivestream against skaters who havebeen competing in that higherstratosphere for a while. This decision completely

changed how Bator trained. She could just as easily have

remained where she was and nothave any real challenge since shehad already mastered STARskate,Taylor said.So she tackled

the challengeand developed adouble axel anda triple salchowin an extremelyshort time for afigure skater, hercoach added. She worked really, really hardwith less advantages than hercompetitors because all theskaters that placed aboveher have been on the prov-incial team at some pointand have gotten somesupport through train-ing camps and thingslike that.

Bator, whohas never beeninvited to a prov-incial camp, has improved atdouble the rate of

all them during this past year,Taylor noted. On Friday, Bator faced a whole

new challenge.Going into her solo performance,

in which she skated to a blend ofdisco hits Its Raining Men and IWill Survive, Bator said she wasmore excited than she was nerv-ous.

Ive been skating really welllately and Ive been wanting tomeet the other skaters for so longand have a chance to skate withthem, Bator told The TIMES afew days before the show. Theopportunity came around so I amexcited. When it came her turn to per-

form, Bator admitted to feelingjitters.I was the third skater and I had

a practice with some of the otherskaters before my skate, Batorshared.Kurt Browning clapped when

I landed my harder jumps. Rightbefore I went on the ice I wasobviously nervous. I didnt knowhow it would turn out, but once Istepped on the ice all those nerveswent away.Bator said that when shes skat-

ing, she is in her element.I think its the greatest feeling,

she said. I love performing. Itsa way to express myself, and todo something I love and be ableto see improvements because ofthe hard work Ive put into it. Im

much more in con-trol of that than alot of things. With a goal of

qualifying for thejunior Canadianchampionships,Bator said she firstperformed this solo

at an ice show put on by the InletSkating Club in Port Moody.I had done it there but because

I have improved over the last sixmonths, Ive adjusted it because Igot so much stronger, Bator saidbefore HOI.Im just going to be thinking

about showing them how muchfun it is and how much I love it.My goal is to affect the audience asmuch as possible.Bator noted that her parents

Jacek and Kasha have been behindher since she started skating.Theyve been supporting me a

lot over the years, mentally, emo-tionally, and financially, obvious-ly, she added. They are reallygood at being there for me andtelling me to have fun with it, andgo out there and do my best. I cansay Im confident that all my hardwork and achievements, and myown personal determination comesfrom the support of my parents.
