Pleas may be too lateAn urgent plea for financial help has

been made, but it maycome too late to keepIron Horse Youth SafeHouse from closing onNew Years Eve.

Maple Ridge MayorNicole Read met withMLAs and the MP,but nothing has beendetermined. The IronHorse closure is imminent.

Ending child povertyTIMES columnist Kathy Booth says a

Facebook plea to help a few strugglingfamilies in her Maple Ridge neighbour-hood is indicative of the worsening prob-lem of child poverty in this country andshe calls for real action to end suchatrocity in the new year.

The spirit of the seasonwas on full display duringan event last week thatinvolved a very special train.by Eric [email protected]

Every year, CP Rail takesdecorated trains across the con-tinent in an effort to raise foodand funds for local food banks, and to help out the less fortunateat Christmas. As always, that included a

stop in Maple Ridge at the PortHaney station across from theBilly Miner Pub & Alehouse. And once again, despite iffy

weather, thousands turned outto see the train all lit up withChristmas lights, to see enter-tainers perform, catch a look atOl St. Nick, and to hear abouthow much money and foodwas raised nationally, as well aslocally for the Friends In NeedFood Bank.New this year, CP added a stop

in Pitt Meadows immediately fol-lowing the Maple Ridge show. And an estimated 3,000 people

came out to enjoy the sightsand sounds of the special train, which parked directly on theHarris Road Crossing, and ina special twist opened bothsides of the performance boxcar, allowing people to take in theperformance from both the northand south side of the tracks. The stop is one of just two that

the train makes where both sidesare open. The event went wonderfully

well, said Pitt Meadows mayor,John Becker. It was the onlytime of year that folks werepleased to have Harris Roadblocked by a train.

And theres a good chance itwill happen again.CP wanted to see if the

response from Pitt Meadowsjustified consideration of futurestops, and I have heard that CPwas blown away by the responseand the food bank support,Becker added. The dual stop also created a bit

of a friendly challenge betweenthe two communities to seewhich City could raise more foodand donations for the Friends InNeed Food Bank. When all was said and done,

Pitt Meadows came out on top.The final tallies saw Pitt

Meadows raise 3,419 pounds offood, compared to Maple Ridgesalmost 13,420 pounds whichbased on a per capita formula was less than Pitt Meadows.Between resident dona-

tions, the previous weekendsFirefighters for Families drive, and the mayors challenge, Pittcollected a total of $13,007, whileMaple Ridge managed $16,863.These amounts included a $7,000CP Rail donation to each City.In total, almost 17,000 pounds

of food and $29,870 was collect-ed between the two Cities.Im disappointed that I lost

my bet with John, Maple Ridge

mayor Nicole Read remarked. But you know what, Im

happy to raise Pitt Meadows flagif that means the food bank getsmore food.Becker echoed her sentiment:

The point of course is that bothcommunities really stepped upfor the less advantaged.

It was the best show thatIve seen, said Mary Robson, executive director of the FriendsIn Need Food Bank. Havingthe train open on both sides inPitt Meadows was a really neatexperience. Sir James Cuddyreally connected with the crowd, due to unique venue.

  • The community is rallyingaround two-year-old NicolasSchwuchow.by Troy [email protected]

Nicolas Schwuchow hasa mop of red curls, skyblue eyes, and a gentlesmile; hes able to singhis ABCs, count up to 13, andloves to read and play with hisbig sister Isabel.Two-year-old Nicolas also has a

nation behind him, as the happy-go-lucky tot goes through lifewith serious physical challenges.Hes super bright, really

funny, hes got this incrediblesense of humour, hes alwayshappy, his mom Petra said. When Nicolas missed his first

significant milestone, sitting onhis own at six months of age,his parents Rolf and Petra tookhim to see a pediatrician, whoreferred them to a neurologist atB.C. Childrens Hospital. After a series of tests, then

eight-month-old Nicolas wasdiagnosed with Spinal MuscularAtrophy (SMA) Type 1, a dis-ease that affects one in 6,000people.SMA is a terminal and degen-

erative disease that causes weak-ness and wasting of the voluntarymuscles in infants and children.Simply, SMA eventually

    impacts every muscle in the

body, hindering the ability towalk, stand, sit, eat, breathe, and swallow. The mind alwaysremains unaffected and childrenwith SMA are bright, sensitive, and playful in spite of their fail-ing bodies.

Moving forward, Nicolasssupport system tran-scends his immediatefamily that includes Rolf, Petra, and four-year-old Izzy. Many friends have stepped in

to help create the A Boy NamedNicolas Campaign to assist thefamily with raising much neededfunds to assist the family withproviding Nicolas with the oppor-tunity to live a normal life. This includes an above ground

pool for water therapy, a wheel-chair-accessible van, and majormodifications to the home thatthe family has lived in for thepast six years. All of these reno-vations will give Nicolas freedomand security.Over the past three months,

Nicolas Nation has taken theproject to a whole new level forthe family. With $18,000 raised and

$200,000 to go, the team whichstarted with accountant ClaireGullmes and her husband Derekalong with Calum Crawford hasnow set its sights on helping thefamily even further.Weve created our own little

family around these guys, and ateam to support them, Gullmessaid. The reality is, you cant doit with one person.

With support from com-pany president AndreaCihelka of GARAConstruction, an Extreme HomeMakeover is planned for thefamily in mid-2015.Over a 10-day period, the plan

is for volunteers to donate theirskills and companies to donatemoney and/or material to make

the home a liveable space forNicolas for years to come, saidlocal businessmen Dean Barbour, who is part of Nicolas Nation. The goal is to make the home

a lot more accessible, Rolf said.In order to complete the pro-

ject Nicolas Nation has grownto include web developer RobbFarion, Barbour, REMAX real-

tor Jim Williams, and JonathanTarnowski, manager of the MapleRidge Liquor Store on LougheedHwy and 207th.On his own, Tarnowski and his

team are supporting Nicolas byoffering five per cent of all liquorsales to the campaign whenpatrons present their NicolasCard and say his name at timeof purchase. To date, they haveraised more than $3,000.The outpouring of support has

been overwhelming for the fam-ily.Theres no words that can

say what has happened withthe community that has steppedup, not only with those who weknow but people who have comeinto our life, Rolf said. Id saythats been an incredible experi-ence.

The word believe holdsmuch weight in theSchwuchow household. The word hangs above their din-ing room table.Added to this is Nicolas deter-

mination to find ways to move,to sit, to stand and to laugh.Rolf stresses We gain hope

    Our View

    Christmas isfor everyone

No one should have to be alone atChristmas. That was the philosophybehind creation of the Christmas Haven. While many people enjoy the merri-ment of the season surrounded by closefriends and loved ones, there was anuncomfortable awareness that otherswould face the holidays alone.

The idea started with an impromptuChristmas event hosted in the late 1990sby Barb Chipperfield and some volun-teers at the Friends In Need Food Bank.

A billiards hall on Lougheed Highwaywas closing down for the holidays andoffered its space.

Chipperfield and friends securedsome snacks and food. Board gamesand entertainment were brought in, andwith volunteers offering a few hoursof their time, it was a casual night ofsocializing and endless laughter.

That event only happened once, butthe concept behind it never died.

Fast forward to Christmas 2000 theFriends In Need Food Bank was headedby TIMES assistant editor RoxanneHooper. She and her partner had closefriends and acquaintances who weregoing to be alone for the holidays.

With help from friends and col-leagues, including Lorraine Bates andTom Cameron at the Christmas ham-per society, the idea for ChristmasHaven took off. Thanks to numerousvolunteers and countless donations, about 100 people came through fromChristmas Eve through Boxing Day.

It was never intended to be exclusiveto homeless or underprivileged families. It was open to anyone, rich or poor, who would otherwise be alone duringthe holidays the only restrictions wereagainst drugs, alcohol, and illegal orinappropriate behaviour.

Through years of heart-warming stor-ies the event has changed, but it stillholds true to the original goal: to bringpeople together at Christmas. Because,as we stated from the start, no oneshould have to be alone at Christmas.

Read more at mrtimes.com, click on Opinion

Donna and I put up ourChristmas tree about two weeksago. Thats not particularly earlyfor us but it still seems to bevery early for me.I do love how Donna and the

kids love having the Christmastree up for a long time (when thenow-grown-up kids are aroundthese days, that is).And theres a happiness that

breathes out of the needles andbranches and twinkling lightsand baubles especially from thebaubles that have become envel-oped in special meaning for whatever nostalgic, poignant, or even downright silly reason. But I do sometimes pine for the days of my

youth when the Christmas tree delivered a spe-cial magic enhanced by a family tradition thatwas once shared by many families perhaps outof necessity and awareness that real trees tend todry out and become a fire hazard.Ever since we came here from Holland (I was

born in Canada, only months after our arrival),we always had a little woodland at hand abit of forest in a back corner of the farm, fromwhich we would select a tree, usually a fewweeks before Christmas. We would all those of us old enough to walk

be involved in that initial selection. Then, the weekend before Christmas, Dad or

one of my oldest brothers would go out with anaxe and return with the best one. It would be setto stand in a shed near the house. As we lived in the Alberni Valley, the tree

would need a day or two to drip-dry before itcould be brought into the living room, whichusually happened earlyish in the day on Dec. 24.But at this point, it was not yet a Christmas

tree. It remained just the tree until we littleones were off to bed in anticipation of thosesugar plums dancing in our heads.Thats when the real magic of Christmas hap-

    pened.

When Santa paid us hisChristmas Eve visit he didntjust bring us our few but pre-cious presents (we were much, much farther from rich in thosedays than we are today), he alsodecorated the tree.Ive come to realize that it was

a stroke of genius on my parentspart to let Santa do the decorat-ing and oh! how masterful ajob he always did!Its much easier to convince

kids of the reality of Santa withglitter and lights than with

gifts bought at Woodwards or ordered fromthe Eatons catalogue. We went to bed with alovely green tree in the corner of the living roomreminding us that tomorrow would be Christmas. But when we awoke, it had become a

Christmas tree that shone and sparkled through-out the house. And it was CHRISTMAS!As I grew older, the job of Santa often fell to

me. I would come home from university andfind the tree waiting for me to dress it up. Myfirst Christmas Eve with Donna, she helped medecorate the tree at the farm, under my momsapproving eye.My technique has always been the same: pick

a special, artistic theme and stick with it thisyear, for instance, we decided on all red andglass balls, icicles, and acid-etched glass orna-ments.Then, when those are all up, a few of the most

special ornaments are sprinkled in gifts fromthe kids and the grand kids, memories of ourparents, special pieces from friends lost or away, reminders of our experiences together. And finally, when all of those things have

pretty much filled the tree with as much as thebranches can bear everything else we havegoes on!And I can still see my mom, rocking across

    from us, smiling and nodding.

Every December for the pastfour years, Harley Smithswork day has started outwith the donning of anunusual uniform: shiny blackboots, a fur-trimmed red suit, long white gloves, a pair of wire-rimmed glasses and a red-and-white hat atop his head. Then, hes ready to face a day

of hearing Christmas wishes froma long line of children.Smith, 71, works for Hire

A Santa and is a graduate ofVancouvers North Pole Santa

School, which trains many of theSantas you see in malls and atcorporate events across B.C. eachChristmas season. The school has been around

since 2013 and has produced 20to 25 surrogate Santas. And this year, Smith once

again suited up to take his seatin Santas chair at Maple RidgesHaney Place Mall.I love the music, I love sit-

ting in the malls and watchingpeople... the kids are all spiritedup, he said. After he retired, Smith told his

wife he was going to be Santa.I love Christmas, I love kids.

Ive been Santa all my life, Ithink, just never had time for ityou know?Getting into the character of the

jolly man in the red suit beforeeach shift is fairly straightforward, but requires an important step forSmith.Youve got to make sure youre

happy and the kids think yourehappy because its abig moment for them.I just think about thekids and Santa Clausand Im ready to go.While some sur-

rogate Santas don awhite beard as part of their cos-tume, Smith is au naturel.I start growing it in February,

but take it off between Christmasand New Years, he explained. While Smith fields a variety of

requests from excited and expect-ant children all the time, theresone that sticks out in his mind.

Last year I had two children, one was about 14 and the otherwas probably 15, 16, they werebrother and sister, Smith recalled.I said, What would you like

for Christmas? And they said,To cure my grand-mothers cancer. Isaid, I really cantdo that, Santa Clauscant do that. All Ican do is pray forher, same as every-

body else, and I will do that foryou.Smith has no plans to give up

Santas seat anytime soon, andenjoys seeing people revel in themagic of the season. Its a beautiful time of year,

he said.-Jennifer Saltman is with the Province

during the Second World War. In the back (from the left) were Dottie LaPage,

Doris Hawkes, Janet (Nan) Morrison, Margaret Cook, Beryl Cunningham, June

Franklin, Ann Preuveneers, and Vi Scott. Seated were Grace Sanderson, Kay

Wynn, and Dottie Karr. Missing from the photo are Gladys McGregor, Peggy

Gautier, Margaret Mattson, Signe Radelet, andJoyce Walker.

Eric Zimmer/TIMESPitt Meadows City council displayed its best ugly Christmas sweaters at last Tuesdaysmeeting, which was the last council meeting of 2014. Dec. 19 was ugly sweater day,so most of council (with the exception of Councillor Dave Murray - who came withhis Christmas tie) got a jump on the occasion, as they marked the Citys participation. This is a catalytic, tongue-in-cheek, not-for-profit organization based in PortMoody, that raises funds for The Childrens Wish Foundation of Canada. Brothers Todd and Troy Deane-Freeman competein a friendly rivalry of who has the best lightdisplay each year, but Mother Nature may havehelped one beat out the other this year.by Christopher [email protected]

Todd Deane-Freeman normally enjoys putting up hisprized-Christmas light display, but his joy this year camecrashing down when one of his pricey props smashedinto a neighbours siding, courtesy of Mother Nature. For six years now, Todd and his younger brother Troy

have been busy outdoing each other by creating the bestChristmas light display at their respective homes. Toddhas been the undefeated champion, which is decidedamongst family and friends. However, the windstormsearlier this month wrecked havoc on his decorations, blowing things down almost every night. The final straw came when one of his two $150 metal,

lighted trees was destroyed. It was my pride and joy, Todd said, explaining he

bought the two metal trees after Christmas last year. Itbroke through the rope and went flying into my neigh-bours siding. It caused about $300 to $400 in damages.Todd estimated that he has about 150,000 lights, but

only put up half this year because of his frustrations. He spent $300 on Boxing Day last year, purchasing

half-priced decorations in anticipation of creating some-thing grand this year.Everybody says it looks good, it looks the same as

before, but it wasnt what I had in mind, Todd saidabout his creation this year. We (he and his brother)havent been that aggressive towards each other thisyear.Across town, Troy didnt suffer as much problems

as his brother, but coincidentally, he too experienced asimilar damage.I ended up getting a hole in my siding, Troy said.

Its kind of funny. I had the ladder set up and put a

hole in my siding. A five inch gash.Troy added about 500 more lights to his display this

year and like his brother, lent some of his stuff to neigh-bours. He has his lights on from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. everynight, but on weekends, he plays recorded music aswell. His display can be seen at 23683 Rock Ridge Dr.

Todd has his lights on from 5 p.m. to about 10:30 p.m.and his home is located at 20497 115a Ave.The brothers plan to meet soon to crown this years

winner and when asked if Troy will finally win, due tothis years weather problems, Todds competitive streakcame out. There is no doubt Im the winner still, Todd said. I

guarantee it.Despite this years problems, both brothers said they

will continue the competition next year.

Kindergarteners craft thoughtfulletters for the big man in red suit.by Roxanne [email protected]

Five-year-old Kingstonhas been half naughty, halfnice this year, and askedSanta for Bumblebee andGrimlock Transformers, aswell as a bag of candy forChristmas. In exchange he will be

leaving 10 cookies and 10 glasses of milk, plus popsicles, ice cream, and cherries forSantas reindeer. His Kindergarten classmate at St.

Patricks Catholic School, five-year-oldElijah, said hes been very good this yearand hoped Santa would bring him a Legotrain set, a Lego building, and some extraLego pieces for the holiday. This was just a sampling of the let-

ters written by 44 students in twoKindergarten classes at the Maple Ridgeprivate school during the past few weeks. Those letters, in turn, were rolled up

and put in paper stockings, hung on afake fireplace on the bulletin board out-

side teachers Rae-Anne Prinster andCorrina Ialungos classrooms. The week leading up to Christmas break

was busy for the kids, who sent theirletters off Dec. 15, had breakfast withSanta on Dec. 16, enjoyed a Christmasclass party on Dec. 17, participated in theschools Christmas concerts on Dec. 18,and participated in mass and a school-wide singalong before classes were dis-missed for the holidays on Dec. 19.

  • Christmas is the season for giving, and prob-ably the best gift I can give to you is ourmuch-loved recipe for my all time favouritedessert: crme caramel.Although the process of this recipe requires a bit

of care and attention, it is sure to become a favour-ite decadent dessert in your home and with guests.Crme caramel is much like crme brle, but the

caramelized sugar goes into the ramekin first, ratherthan torched on top with a Brle. The result is a complex caramel layer on top of

the inverted custard, and a residual complex cara-mel sauce that is a perfect companion with each biteof the delicate custard. Enjoy!
