A couple that owns a pooland spa company say thegrowing homeless camp iscrippling their business.TROY [email protected]
Joanne Pinkney and Ben Testini may bein their 70s, but they’re not about to leta homeless encampment run them andtheir business off of Cliff Avenue. For more than two months, close to
100 homeless people have resided in amakeshift tent city along Cliff Avenue, just south of Lougheed Highway and nearMaple Ridge’s downtown core. The camp is situated right next to
Maple Ridge Pool and Spa Center, a busi-ness at 22191 Cliff Ave., that’s owned andoperated by Testini, 77, and Pinkney, 73.Instead of walking away from their
business – that has seen a more than 50per cent drop in sales since 2004 – theyare holding firm, and hosting a customerappreciation sale July 15 to 19.Pinkney blames the drop in business on
the crime and homelessness in the neigh-bourhood behind the Salvation ArmyCaring Place building. The couple bought the property on Cliff
Avenue in 1993 and the building in whichtheir business is located was built in ’96.They opened Catalina Pool & Spa (its
original incarnation) the next year, thensold the business in the fall of 2003.Around that time, the business was
generating roughly $1.2 million per yearin revenue, including $650,000 fromin-store sales, Pinkney estimated.According to Pinkney, when the “ten-
ant absconded, leaving us with monthsof uncollected rent,” she and Testinire-opened the pool and spa business thatthey established in the mid-1990s andsold to the previous tenant, and theirstruggles continue to today.
“I figure that we’re down about 50 percent of what we should be,” she added.Pinkney said she and Testini have little
choice but to forge on.“We have to,” Pinkney said. “We own
the building, we need a mortgage, so wehave to work. We’re working seven daysa week… and we’ve got one employeebesides ourselves to try and make thingsgo.”The issue of homelessness near the
Caring Place is nothing new to Testiniand Pinkney. In an April 22 letter addressed to Maple
Ridge Mayor Nicole Read, Pinkney wrote“for 13 years now, we have been writingletter after letter and making phone callsone after another making pleas to themayor’s office to do something to stopthe deterioration of our neighbourhood, which began with the construction of the
Salvation Army’s Caring Place.”In the letter, Pinkney wrote that if
you peer into the tents, “you might geta glimpse of the prostitution. And youmight have front row seats to the dailyfights and profanity.”The couple is unable to escape the cac-
ophony of sound often associated withthe camp, because they live above theirbusiness.“We live upstairs,” Pinkney told the
TIMES during an interview at the store.“Not only do we get the whammy here,we’ve got it upstairs too. Some nights it’spretty wicked.”They have witnessed fights, verbal as
well as physical, as well as open alcoholand drug use. “I seen a drug deal, no twoways about it,” Pinkney said, feeling “thebylaws and police turn a blind eye towhat’s going on outside.”
She keeps the door facing Cliff Avenuelocked at all times. So how does Pinkney see this ending?“I don’t know, maybe a lawsuit because
I feel that my rights and freedoms havebeen breached,” she said.“I feel that there’s double standards.
They [the local homeless] can do what-ever they please, here, without any inter-ruptions.”The situation is taking a toll on
Testini’s health. He’s suffering from severe stress and
often has trouble sleeping.“I’m telling you, I’m angry, very angry
over the whole situation,” Pinkney said. The couple are part of a growing num-
ber of residents putting pressure on theCity of Maple Ridge and provincial gov-ernment to take action.

Sunday’s annualRotary fundraiser is afull community effort.
ERIC [email protected]
Before thousands of rubberducks can make their waydown the Alouette River atMaple Ridge Park during theannual Rotary Duck Race, ahost of volunteers and mem-bers from both local RotaryClubs, work diligently behindthe scenes to ensure everythingis in order for the ducks totake the plunge. One of these people is Irena
Shantz, wife of Papa Duck BobShantz.“It’s all for the good of the
community,” Irena said.“That’s what keeps us doing
it.”She’s quick to point out
though, it’s much more thanher and Bob making it happen.“It takes a lot of people to
put this together, and this yearwe’ve had more people comeforward and help, which hasbeen great.”Event planning starts before
Christmas, she noted.“Planning for the Duck Race
begins in late November,”Irena said. “It starts withsecuring a grand prize fromour friend Ian Speckman at
Maple Ridge Chrysler.”Actual race day planning
begins between March andApril with the obtaining of apartner sponsor.“This year, Manulife is our
entertainment sponsor,” shesaid. “There’s just so muchwork that goes into this event.I can’t even begin to tell youall the work that goes intomaking it all happen; it’s a bigproduction.”Other pre-planning includes
reserving the park – whichhappens in March – and liningup the day’s food options andentertainment in April. This year, she added, there
will be more happening at thepark than in previous years, throughout the course of this
year’s race day.In previous years, “we’ve
kind of catered to the youngerkids,” she explained. “Thisyear we’re catering more to allage groups. It’s going to be agreat day down at the park.”The day’s events kick off at
11 a.m. and run until 5 p.m.,with the actual duck racescheduled to take place at 1p.m.“Norden the Magician is
going to perform right after therace, and we’ve got entertain-ment all day; live bands andsolo performers.”Tickets are still available,
and for more on the day’sevents or for ticket informa-tion, visit: www.rotaryduck-race.ca.

A night timemovie andmarket in MapleRidge attracted750 people.ROXANNE [email protected]
Nine-year-old BrodyMaguire has seen TheLEGO Movie 17 times. It’sfair to say it’s one of hisfavourite shows “of alltimes.”But, he hasn’t always
seen it through to theend – in particular at anyoutdoor venue.Maybe it has something
to do with all thefresh air. But sleepalways seems towin out.Nevertheless, he
tried his best tostay awake duringthe inaugural Movie inthe Night festivities in hisnew hometown of MapleRidge last week.
But, as the sun set andthe movie started, Brody’seyelids grew heavier. And, about an hour intothe show, he lost thatbattle. He was in good com-
pany, though. Many
youngsters who came outwith their parents to theDowntown Maple RidgeBusiness ImprovementAssociation’s first-evermovie night in MemorialPeace Park fell asleeponce the film began.Brody’s family was
the lucky winner of TheTIMES Picnic in the Parkcontest, which meant theyreceived VIP seating forthe show – complete witha picnic blanket, coolerand cold beverages, chairsfor the adults, as wellas a full meal and somesnacks. The Movie in the Park
night and adjoining nightmarket on July 8 was thefirst of two such eventsplanned this summer by
the DMRBIA, andorganizer MichelleZazulak was elatedwith the results.“The event
was an absolutesuccess. This being afirst-time event, we reallycouldn’t be happier withhow it went,” she said, estimating at least 750people attended. On July 29, the market
will once again run from 6to 9 p.m., with the featurefilm – Shrek – to beginshortly after 9.

LettersDear Editor,Thank you again for
the wonderful nightout. We just moved [here
three months ago] andare finally starting tofeel more settled in. Sowe entered this [TIMES’Picnic in the Park] con-test for a nice familynight out of the house. We attempted an out-
door movie downtownlast summer. However, it was so
packed, even thoughwe got there early –and because you hadto be there so early– Brody fell asleepas soon as the moviebegan. We figured this was
a much more pleasantway to attempt an out-door show.People did give us
some strange looksabout the caution tape[which roped off theirVIP seating area – partof the prize]. I thinkthey must have thoughtwe did that ourselves, haha!Dinner from Hunger
Management was deli-cious!Garett [Cooper,
her boyfriend] hadthe prawn sandwich,Brody [Maguire, herson] stuck with his
typical chicken fingersand chips, and I hadthe chicken and onionsandwich. All of us had satisfied
stomachs and are look-
ing forward to findinghim at a market soon. The entertainment
was great as well! Goodmusic! The market was
small, but Brody got anew toy out of it froma new comic store thatis open, and I bought acouple beautiful neck-laces from one of thevendors. We lasted until about
10:30 p.m., when Brodywas falling asleep. His friend and his
mom joined us, as well. However, they wereable to make it throughthe whole movie.Once again, thank
you so much!It was a treat, to not
have to rush to find aspot after work and betotally taken care of!

last week, municipal and provincial officialswere told that kids in and around Cliff avenue’stent city struggle to sleep at night, as arearesidents applied pressure to the issue dealtwith. readers reacted...“Poor children they didn’t ask to live on the street. Wemust do something for this poor children.”

“Ok, here’s the solution: the mayor and social workersget together and either A. Find subsidized apartments,or B. Build another apartment and then do this – offerfree housing if they agree to a drug test, as well as theyoffer eight hours [of work] a day for a total of 40 a weekfor free housing… If they do not want to offer time toclean, maintain, or other jobs available within MapleRidge then they should move onto another town.”

“For those saying to simply ‘evict’ the homeless people, give them an actual place to go and the problem will besolved – as the article stated that in the past this hasbeen done. By evicting the homeless we are not solvingthe problem of homelessness we are just moving it toanother area.”
– Kayla Levins
“Lol. How do you think they got here? That’s exactlywhat Van[couver] did during the Olympics. Packed themup and shipped them this way… are we just going tokeep moving them around to be someone else’s issue?”
– Luke Dickenson
“There is an easy way to solve this. Set up tent city infront of MLA’s homes and the premier’s home. Whypunish innocent, working people?”

Dear Editor,Bob D’Eith gives the
typical NDP solutionfor homeless – govern-ments need to just taxmore and give more.[Tent city a result ofcuts, July 9, TIMES].The problem keeps
coming back to onething: lack of affordablehousing. The City needs to
look at ways affordablehousing can be built.
Dan Banov,Maple Ridge
Put up moneyDear Editor,Bob D’Eith is missing
the NDP in the trium-virate of parties helisted as responsible forthe homeless situation.NDP leader Tom
Mulcair recentlyannounced a plan to“build stronger citiesand communities.”Given the party’s past
track record, is this intheir budget?
Cherryl Katnich,Maple Ridge
Dear Editor,Letter writer [and fed-
eral NDP candidate inthis riding] Bob D’Eithappears to believe thatthe Cliff Avenue tentcity, and homelessnessin general, are prob-lems that can be solvedby governments justspending more taxpay-ers’ money [Tent citya result of cuts, July 9Letter, TIMES].That, of course, is the
NDP solution to manycomplex problems.Although it is gen-
erally recognized thathousing is a provincialgovernment responsib-ility, Mr. D’Eith appearsto be unaware of thesignificant role that thefederal government hasplayed, and continuesto play, in affordablehousing.Frankly, I’m tired of
the NDP’s hackneyedattempts to perpetuatethe myth that they’rethe only party thatcares about people. It’s just not true.

The Winter’s Tale is a classicShakespearean tale of love, loss, andredemption. It holds all the elements to capture an
audience’s attention, including a reallyfierce looking bear puppet, according toactor Linda MacLean.MacLean, a Pitt Meadows resident, has
been part of the Emerald Pig TheatricalSociety for about six years and took onher biggest challenge this year– that ofbeing co-producer of the Shakepeareanplay, as well as playing a pivotal role in it.She plays Paulina, a strong woman will-
ing to stand up to the king, able to with-stand losing her husband to a bear, and acarrier of unshakable faith.“It’s probably the most interest-
ing female character in Shakespeare,”MacLean said. “She has a voice that’sstrong enough to confront the king. It’s apretty meaty character.”While MacLean embraced her character,
she also, by a strange turn, made (with
the aid of stage manager Jen Challenger)the bear puppet responsible for eating heron-stage husband.“He does look a little scary even though
he’s a big puppet,” she said. “We have nobusiness having a bear that looks like thatbecause we had no idea what we weredoing. We had so much fun on just thatone aspect.”
Much of the play’s success will comefrom others like Linda who have jumpedin and taken things on to make it all cometogether, said director Cathie Young.“It’s been great working with the whole
cast,” Young added. “It’s a huge com-mitment by all these people to make thishappen.”One of Young’s favourite plays, The
Winter’s Tale, moves from tragedy intocomedy, and family.“With a magical ending. We’ve pitched
it as a fairy tale for a summer’s eve,” shesaid.Kids are in the show in addition to the
adult thespians, taking on roles as musi-cians and castle guards.“There is always the involvement of
everyone who comes out,” said Young.“There is this big myth that Shakespeareis difficult.”“We also have a deaf actor,” she added.
“It’s beautiful actually to watch the lan-guage in sign.”Young describes her job as a privilege.“The Winter’s Tale is one of my favour-
ites, it’s kind of a family show in a way,it’s all about family,” she said. With the show opening tonight (July 16)
in Pitt Meadows at Spirit Square, everyoneinvolved is focused on bringing it together.“The show does go on, no matter what,”
said MacLean. “No matter how you feelthe week before, it all comes together.”The show runs July 16 to 18 at Spirit
Square in Pitt Meadows and July 23 to25 on the bandstand in Maple Ridge’sMemorial Peace Park. All shows start at 8 p.m. with pre-show
entertainment beginning at 6:30 p.m.Organizers suggest audience members
bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on,as well as a donation to the Friends inNeed Food Bank.

A local committee invites thecommunity to share thoughts andideas about religious beliefs.RONDA [email protected]
Formed close to two years ago, the BuildingInterfaith Bridges steering committee is hosting apicnic to invite others in the community to get toknow the committee, what it does, and discuss
various religions.Ahmed A. Yousef, in
charge of public affairs forthe committee, noted it’sthe first summer picnic thegroup has held.“We are a committee of
individuals, representingdifferent faiths from here inMaple Ridge,” he said. The picnic is a potluck, so
those attending are asked tobring a food dish to share, aplate and utensils, and most
importantly a chair. The event is at noon on Saturday,w July 18
at Haney Nokai Park at 222nd Street and BrownAvenue, just north of Dewdney Trunk Road.“We’re inviting people to bring out ideas and
thoughts,” Yousef said. “And introduce ourselvesto the community.”Throughout the year, the committee organizes
events to promote the discussion of different reli-gious points of view. This includes talks held atthe Maple Ridge library.“This year, we’re doing something different,”
he noted. “We’re having each faith being show-cased or presented, then opening up to the audi-ence for questions.”The first talk is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sept.
30. “We’re doing them every two weeks,” Yousefadded.

Working together with the Cityof Surrey, the City of Maple Ridgeis participating in a campaign tohelp stop domestic abuse.Rakhi bracelets have a long-
standing tradition in India. Sisterstie bracelets on brothers’ wristssymbolizing love and respect.Staff with the City of Maple
Ridge embraced the program, which has run in Surrey for morethan five years to bring aware-
ness to domestic violence.Bracelets purchased from
Surrey are on sale until Fridayfor $5, with $4 from each goingto the programs and services ofCythera Transition House Society.According to Roberta O’Brien,
Cythera’s new coordinator ofviolence against women in rela-tionships, the response has beenpositive for the program.“I put it out through the Maple
Ridge Pitt Meadows KatzieCommunity Network,” she said.“Four or five agencies said theywould sell them internally.”O’Brien also contacted the
Downtown Maple Ridge BusinessImprovement Association and,“four businesses jumped on itright away.”One of those businesses is
Crazy About Clothes on 228thStreet.O’Brien noted the purple brace-
lets are hand made by women inIndia as a way to help improvetheir financial conditions.“Traditionally the bracelets
were quite big and bulky... notpractical,” noted O’Brien. “Theseare beautiful and much smaller.”The size is beneficial as the
Rakhi concept is that the braceletis worn until it falls off.Brothers wear the bracelet to
indicate that they stand with theirsisters against domestic violence. This tradition continues evenafter a woman is married.O’Brien would love to see
people around Maple Ridge wear-ing the bracelets as a show ofsupport.

Here are some safe driving tips for when you areheading out on the road this summer:
Impaired driving
Impaired driving is one of the leading causes of death inCanada. In fact, the greatest numbers of alcohol-relatedcrashes occur during the summer months (June, July,August.) And approximately one in three collisionsinvolve alcohol and one in ten drivers after 10pm haveconsumed alcohol.
Driving Fatigue
Canadians often travel tremendous distance when theygo on vacations. This creates a temptation to keepdriving for extended periods even when tired. Fatigue isa form of impairment, so don’t give into the temptationto push on. If you feel fatigued, have a good sleepbefore you take the wheel. It might be better to delayyour trip until the morning when you feel fresh andenergized. Rest stops are important.
Car Mechanical Safety
It is a good idea to check your vehicle’s fluid levels, tireinflation and lights when you stop at a service stationfor gas.A few minutes of checking can save you hoursof costly repairs down the road.
Have a safe and happy summer!

JOEY moved into a new apartmentwith his owner who unfortu-nately died shortly after. He was sotraumatized he hid in the mattress. When we went to get him it waslike trying to catch a wild animal. He was completely untouchable. When we finally got him, he wentto another shelter where he did notimprove, and ended up with us.For the first little while he was shyand withdrawn. Then almost over-night he turned into a loving, sweet, cuddly boy. It is hard to believe thisis the same cat. His transformationhas been beyond amazing. Joeyis only about 2 years old and willmake a wonderful companion.
KEATS grew up on the streets andcomes across as a tough guy whosometimes forgets he no longerhas to fight to survive. Keats isabout 5 years old (all of whichhe spent on the streets), likes totalk, loves humans but does notdemand attention, and is prettyindifferent to the other cats in hispen. Keats is FIV positive. FIV canonly be passed to other cats. Hewill need to be an only cat or sharea home with another FIV positivefeline. Keats will never get his kit-ten years back, but the tiny sparklein his wise eyes tells us that in theright, loving home he will be ableto get past all the bad stuff andenjoy his life to the fullest.
This little guy is definitely not a cat. This is SHELDON the bunny. Oncein a while we take in small animalthat have nowhere else to go, orwho may be in trouble. Sheldon isjust such a bunny. He is about 4years old and one of the sweetestbunnies we have ever had. Shel-don likes to sit in your lap and becuddled. His previous family wouldleave the door to his cage open andSheldon had the run of the house. He always came back to his cageto use the litter box. So here wehave a cute, friendly, potty trained, and smart little bunny who getsalong with cats and dogs. He’s theperfect guy for the perfect family.

CARLOS has been featured herebefore. He came to us from anoth-er shelter where no one expressedany interest in him. It seems thatthe same is true at Katie’s Place.Carlos is a plain black cat who isnow about 14 years old. WhenCarlos came to us he had an ear in-fection, desperately needed groom-ing, was underweight and anemic. This poor guy has obviously beenthrough his share of troubles. Lifehas not been kind to this old boy.Carlos is not a demanding cat. Asunny windowsill, a comfy chair, aplace where he can feel safe, andloved is all he needs. He shouldn’tspend his final years in a shelter, hedeserves better.

Adult cats areavailable for adiscounted adoptionfee through theMaple Ridge SPCA.RONDA [email protected]
It’s kitten season and thatmeans the Maple Ridge SPCAis filled with felines looking forlove.Jenn Stack, local shelter
manager, noted there are cur-rently 18 adult cats waiting fortheir “furever” homes.Adoptions
of these moremature cats arehalf price fromJuly 17 to 27.“We’re doing
the eventbecause it’s kit-ten season rightnow and a lotof people, when they come in,see the cute kittens and theadult cats don’t get as muchattention,” Stack said.No matter what kind of adult
cat people have in mind, BCSPCA shelters have all shapes, sizes, and colours available.“Anything over the age of six
months is considered an adult,so these cats have a lot of life.”
All of the cats looking forlove have been spayed orneutered and vet-checked toensure they are ready for theirnew home.Adult cats also tend to
be calmer than their kittencounterparts and the fact thatthey are litter box trained is aplus for most adopters. Not to mention the fact that
the love adult cats give is justas good as that of a kitten.“We are hoping to find some
amazing homes for some veryspecial cats,” Stack noted. Two of the adult cats in the
shelter are Booger and Sunny. Both are nine years old, shorthaired, and black.“Black cats stay here three
time longer thanany other cats,”said Stack.“They are a bit
shy, but if youjust give them alittle bit of time, they warm up,they purr, andwill give head
butts and want cheek rubs.”Both Booger and Sonny have
been at the Maple Ridge shel-ter at 10235 Jackson Rd. for30 days. This is problematicbecause of the volume of kit-tens coming in.Kittens are being adopted,
but as Stack noted, they arecoming in just as fast, if notfaster. It’s the adult cats that
are being overlooked and thereis a wait list of other cats stillto come into the shelter.“It’s hard to rotate [adult
cats] between shelters becausewe all have the same issue,”Stack said. With 50 per cent off the
adoption fee, Stack hopespeople will be more likely toconsider an adult cat over akitten. The goal in Maple Ridge for
the adult cat adoption event, presented by Hill’s Science Dietas part of its Food, Shelter, andLove partnership program withBC SPCA, is to find homes forall 18 adult cats currently atthe shelter, including Boogerand Sunny.Hill’s is the main provider
of food for the shelter animalsand the company also givessample packs of food to gohome with adopters for theirnew best friend.Stack noted keeping animals
on the same food after theyleave the shelter helps limitany concerns with stomachupset due to the stress of anew environment. It’s one lessthing that changes and keepsgastrointestinal issues to aminimum. For anyone considering
adopting the “purrfect” newcompanion, the event startingtomorrow (July 17) at B.C.’sSPCA branches is the idealopportunity to make a match.

A Ridge businessowner hands overthe reins, and movesforward with aprestigious award.ERIC [email protected]
She sold her business after 25years at the helm this year, andlast month, June Booth, formerowner of Quantum Gymnastics inMaple Ridge, received a lifetimeachievement award by GymnasticsCanada.“I was very honoured to receive
this,” she said. For Booth, the award is much
more than just a flashy piece ofhardware. It’s recognition of her contribu-
tions to the gymnastics commun-
ity and the sport itself. And though gymnastics has
been a life-long adventure forBooth, her tenure as owner ofQuantum was first set in motionback in the mid-’80s.“We had actually come to Maple
Ridge during Expo ‘86,” sheexplained. “We liked the commun-ity, the size of it, and there wasno gymnastics program here at thetime. It just seemed like an ideallocation, in an area we wanted tolive in.”The family made the move from
Alberta, where Booth had beenworking as a coach, and whereher children were already veryactive in the sport – including herson who was competing nationallyand “doing quite well.”There were challenges to be
sure, when it came to getting the
business off the ground.“It actually took me about a
year-and-a-half to get zoning per-mission, and things like that, butwe eventually got it open in theindustrial park,” she recalled. Now, a quarter-century later, the
business continues to thrive.‘We’ve had kids compete nation-
ally, and internationally over theyears, and we average about 1,300to 1,400 kids a year who are mem-bers.”Running a successful business
such as Quantum has been “veryrewarding,” Booth said.“To see the number of young
coaches coming through – aswell as the number of competi-tive athletes and ex-coaches fromQuantum that are still involved inthe sport is just amazing.”

was just ready and it was time. I have been lim-iting my coaching over the past few years, butstaying busy with gymnastics outside the gym.”Booth resolved that if someone wanting to buy
the business came along, that would be great, which turned out to be what happened. If the business had not been sold, Booth “likely
would have been content to just manage it froma distance,” she elaborated. “Then I got the offeron it, and everything fell into place.”Booth will remain connected to the club, and
involved with the gymnastics community.“I think if retiring and selling the business
meant that I was outof the sport entirely,it would have beenmuch more difficultto let it go,” shesaid.Booth received her
lifetime achievementafter being nomin-ated by GymnasticsBC, throughGymnastics Canada.“It’s the highest
honour they have, and the award isbased on a person’s contribution to the sportover the years,” she explained. And Booth’s resume is an impressive one.“I’ve been a national coaching program certifi-
cation developer, I’ve trained many new courseconductors and learning facilitators over theyears, I’ve been an international judge, repre-senting Canada all over the world, and I’ve host-ed numerous national and international eventsfor Gymnastics Canada.”For Booth, the joy in Quantum has been
“watching the kids do well, and the enjoymentof working with them.”The sport has also been a major part of her
family, and her children’s upbringing.“My son was an acrobat with Cirque De Soleil,
and is now a head coach for them. My daugh-ter’s an international judge, and her and I havetravelled all over the world together, and myhusband – before he passed away – did all of ourmaintenance, and built the equipment.”Going forward, Booth is optimistic she’s leav-
ing Quantum in good hands. She’s also looking forward to “getting done all
the things I never seem to have time to do.”Other activities keeping her busy are her
involvement with Canadian Guide Dogs for theBlind (“I’m currently training a guide puppy forthem,” she said,) spending time with her grand-daughter, and training learning facilitators toteach gymnastics courses. And as for Quantum itself? “Hopefully, the
gym will continue,” she said. “There’s a reallygood strong basis. It’s a great sport for anybodyand a great foundation to build on.”
