The John & Dave logo has been provided in a variety of colour formats and file types, which will be explained on the following pages.
The Logo Symbol
I have also taken the liberty of creating a folder with just the key graphic, with John & Dave cut out of it.
Using this, whether for letterhead, or just a watermark on a document, will increase brand recognition and create a more cohesive brand identity.
An example of its watermark use is seen in the bottom right corner of this page.

A couple that owns a pool and spa company say the growing homeless camp is crippling their business.TROY [email protected]
Joanne Pinkney and Ben Testini may be in their 70s, but they’re not about to let a homeless encampment run them and their business off of Cliff Avenue.
For more than two months, close to 100 homeless people have resided in a makeshift tent city along Cliff Avenue, just south of Lougheed Highway and near Maple Ridge’s downtown core.
The camp is situated right next to Maple Ridge Pool and Spa Center, a busi-ness at 22191 Cliff Ave., that’s owned and operated by Testini, 77, and Pinkney, 73.
Instead of walking away from their business – that has seen a more than 50 per cent drop in sales since 2004 – they are holding firm, and hosting a customer appreciation sale July 15 to 19.
Pinkney blames the drop in business on the crime and homelessness in the neigh-bourhood behind the Salvation Army Caring Place building.
The couple bought the property on Cliff Avenue in 1993 and the building in which their business is located was built in ’96.
They opened Catalina Pool & Spa (its original incarnation) the next year, then sold the business in the fall of 2003.
Around that time, the business was generating roughly $1.2 million per year in revenue, including $650,000 from in-store sales, Pinkney estimated.
According to Pinkney, when the “ten-ant absconded, leaving us with months of uncollected rent,” she and Testini re-opened the pool and spa business that they established in the mid-1990s and sold to the previous tenant, and their struggles continue to today.
“I figure that we’re down about 50 per cent of what we should be,” she added.
Pinkney said she and Testini have little choice but to forge on.
“We have to,” Pinkney said. “We own the building, we need a mortgage, so we have to work. We’re working seven days a week… and we’ve got one employee besides ourselves to try and make things go.”
The issue of homelessness near the Caring Place is nothing new to Testini and Pinkney.
In an April 22 letter addressed to Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read, Pinkney wrote “for 13 years now, we have been writing letter after letter and making phone calls one after another making pleas to the mayor’s office to do something to stop the deterioration of our neighbourhood, which began with the construction of the
Salvation Army’s Caring Place.”In the letter, Pinkney wrote that if
you peer into the tents, “you might get a glimpse of the prostitution. And you might have front row seats to the daily fights and profanity.”
The couple is unable to escape the cac-ophony of sound often associated with the camp, because they live above their business.
“We live upstairs,” Pinkney told the TIMES during an interview at the store. “Not only do we get the whammy here, we’ve got it upstairs too. Some nights it’s pretty wicked.”
They have witnessed fights, verbal as well as physical, as well as open alcohol and drug use. “I seen a drug deal, no two ways about it,” Pinkney said, feeling “the bylaws and police turn a blind eye to what’s going on outside.”
She keeps the door facing Cliff Avenue locked at all times.
So how does Pinkney see this ending?“I don’t know, maybe a lawsuit because
I feel that my rights and freedoms have been breached,” she said.
“I feel that there’s double standards. They [the local homeless] can do what-ever they please, here, without any inter-ruptions.”
The situation is taking a toll on Testini’s health.
He’s suffering from severe stress and often has trouble sleeping.
“I’m telling you, I’m angry, very angry over the whole situation,” Pinkney said.
The couple are part of a growing num-ber of residents putting pressure on the City of Maple Ridge and provincial gov-ernment to take action.

Sunday’s annual Rotary fundraiser is a full community effort.
ERIC [email protected]
Before thousands of rubber ducks can make their way down the Alouette River at Maple Ridge Park during the annual Rotary Duck Race, a host of volunteers and mem-bers from both local Rotary Clubs, work diligently behind the scenes to ensure everything is in order for the ducks to take the plunge.
One of these people is Irena Shantz, wife of Papa Duck Bob Shantz.
“It’s all for the good of the community,” Irena said.
“That’s what keeps us doing it.”
She’s quick to point out though, it’s much more than her and Bob making it happen.
“It takes a lot of people to put this together, and this year we’ve had more people come forward and help, which has been great.”
Event planning starts before Christmas, she noted.
“Planning for the Duck Race begins in late November,” Irena said. “It starts with securing a grand prize from our friend Ian Speckman at
Maple Ridge Chrysler.”Actual race day planning
begins between March and April with the obtaining of a partner sponsor.
“This year, Manulife is our entertainment sponsor,” she said. “There’s just so much work that goes into this event. I can’t even begin to tell you all the work that goes into making it all happen; it’s a big production.”
Other pre-planning includes reserving the park – which happens in March – and lining up the day’s food options and entertainment in April.
This year, she added, there will be more happening at the park than in previous years, throughout the course of this
year’s race day.In previous years, “we’ve
kind of catered to the younger kids,” she explained. “This year we’re catering more to all age groups. It’s going to be a great day down at the park.”
The day’s events kick off at 11 a.m. and run until 5 p.m., with the actual duck race scheduled to take place at 1 p.m.
“Norden the Magician is going to perform right after the race, and we’ve got entertain-ment all day; live bands and solo performers.”
Tickets are still available, and for more on the day’s events or for ticket informa-tion, visit: www.rotaryduck-race.ca.

An RCMP officer is gearing up for Cops for Cancer.
ROXANNE [email protected]
Acting Cpl. Cara Thomson is attempt-ing to ride through the pain of a back injury – which at times she describes as excruciating.
She sustained the injury after signing up for this year’s Cops for Cancer 2015s Tour de Coast fundraising ride, but she’s deter-mined to stick it out and make the nine-day trek in September – in honour of her father.
“I have a lot of cancer in my family,” she said, explaining her motivation to help the Canadian Cancer Society – and espe-cially the kids’ Camp Goodtimes in Maple Ridge.
“I’m not your typ-ical marathon run-ner,” she said. “The training in itself is very challenging and the ride itself – out-side of [RCMP train-
ing] depot – will be the biggest physical challenge I’ve every taken on,” Thomson told The TIMES.
The 40-year-old single mother from Mission, who works as the mental health and addic-tions liaison officer for Ridge Meadows RCMP, admits finding time in her busy schedule to train is difficult.
Finding the strength to get out on the bike after working, com-pleting her motherly duties, and wrapping up her daily farm
chores can be almost impossible.
Overcoming her fears about finishing the 900-kilometre ride is sometimes over-whelming, too.
But one of the big-gest hurdles she’s
currently facing is the fund-raising.
Each rider is obligated to raise $6,000 and she’s cur-rently only
at the $2,000 mark, with several public and private fundraiser in the works, includ-ing a jail-and-bail at Country Fest next weekend.> More at: mrtimes.com

A night time movie and market in Maple Ridge attracted 750 people.ROXANNE [email protected]
Nine-year-old Brody Maguire has seen The LEGO Movie 17 times. It’s fair to say it’s one of his favourite shows “of all times.”
But, he hasn’t always seen it through to the end – in particular at any outdoor venue.
Maybe it has something to do with all the fresh air. But sleep always seems to win out.
Nevertheless, he tried his best to stay awake during the inaugural Movie in the Night festivities in his new hometown of Maple Ridge last week.
But, as the sun set and the movie started, Brody’s eyelids grew heavier. And, about an hour into the show, he lost that battle.
He was in good com-pany, though. Many
youngsters who came out with their parents to the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association’s first-ever movie night in Memorial Peace Park fell asleep once the film began.
Brody’s family was the lucky winner of The TIMES Picnic in the Park contest, which meant they received VIP seating for the show – complete with a picnic blanket, cooler and cold beverages, chairs for the adults, as well as a full meal and some snacks.
The Movie in the Park night and adjoining night market on July 8 was the first of two such events planned this summer by
the DMRBIA, and organizer Michelle Zazulak was elated with the results.
“The event was an absolute
success. This being a first-time event, we really couldn’t be happier with how it went,” she said, estimating at least 750 people attended.
On July 29, the market will once again run from 6 to 9 p.m., with the feature film – Shrek – to begin shortly after 9.

Views change on pot
If the voters of British Columbia had their way, marijuana would already be legal or decriminalized.
At least, that’s the results of a new Insights West poll. It showed that 67 per cent of British Columbians support ending the crimin-alization of cannabis. A full 38 per cent want legalization, 24 per
cent want decriminalization, and 27 per cent favour only medical use. Just seven per cent want the use of pot banned completely.
The laws on pot have been out of date more or less since it was criminalized early in the 20th century.
Let’s be clear – pot isn’t actually good for you, and smoking it defin-itely isn’t. Driving while stoned is dangerous, too.
But our society already balances many good-vs-ill conflicts. Tobacco isn’t good for you either, nor is alcohol, but we regulate rather than ban those substances because the social cost is easier to bear when they are legal.
Prohibit a substance that many people want and you get crime, usually violent organized crime. We’ve seen that with alcohol in the past, but today, the owners of brew pubs and liquor stores fight for customers with advertising, not with bullets in the streets. We’re all better off for taking alcohol out of the hands of gangsters.
That seems to be what many West Coasters think when it comes to pot, too. Most expect a decline in gang violence tied to the drug trade.
The same poll shows they’re sceptical of claims by Conservative politicians that legalization would lead to teens having more access to pot. We hate to break it to Health Minister Rona Ambrose, but putting marijuana behind the counter of a liquor store would likely make it harder for many teens to access, not easier.
If the government does legalize marijuana, that doesn’t mean they should encourage its use – in fact, a strategy of taxes, education, and fact-based advertising is likely the best policy. We’ve seen smoking rates plummet, and we’ve seen drunk driving rates fall, so why not try that strategy with pot?

It’s not the smoker’s fault when a cigarette tossed out the window of
his or her car starts a fire.
It’s the cigarette’s fault.Duh!As long as the lighter is
tucked away or the match used to light the cigarette has been disposed of safely, there’s no blame left outside of the cigarette itself.
Besides, you can’t really blame the driver for his deci-sion to toss his butt into the crisp, dry grass on the roadside – smokers regularly make stupid decisions, as evidenced by the very fact that they are smokers.
I believe it is due to the reduced levels of oxygen available to their bloodstream, depriving their brains of nutrition neces-sary for the execution of useful thoughts.
So just as the drinking driver will try to claim that he was less responsible for the death or maiming of a child or other vic-
tim because he would never have done such a foolish thing while not under the influence of alcohol (and some judges still allow significant mitiga-tion of sentences on that rea-soning, drinking-and-driving laws be damned), a smoker is totally justified in maintaining that it was the cigarette itself that induced him to throw it out the window on a hot, drought-ridden day and burn down the whole neighbour-hood.
The problem is that, like a corporation, a cigarette is an inanimate object, and it doesn’t care.
The fire is not the smoker’s fault. It’s not the driver’s fault. It’s just a natural consequence of a
cigarette with a careless disposition. That is, of course, unless we made it
specifically illegal to smoke while driving. For instance, it’s specifically illegal to
use a cellphone while driving – and with
good reason: behind the wheel of a car, cellphones kill people.
Once again, it’s not the driver’s fault. Certain kinds of microwave radiation have been shown to cause intelligence deficits in rats.
Since I would never argue that drivers who use cellphones are better than rats, those drivers could excuse themselves from the death and destruction they cause by placing the blame where it really belongs: on their cellphone.
That’s why it was necessary, despite the fact there were already laws against distracted driving, to specify cellphone bans for drivers.
Since the cellphone couldn’t be charged with the death of another human being, we can now charge a driver with using the cellphone that kills someone.
And that’s no small thing. The likelihood of causing an accident
while talking on a cellphone is just about exactly the same as when driving while legally impaired by alcohol or drugs.
And the probability that the accident
will involve a death is four times greater if you crash into another car – or a kid in a playground zone – while your cellphone is in your hand.
(Actually, those odds remain the same if you are using a hands-free device, but they remain legal because our politicians appear to have been dosing themselves with too many cellphone microwaves to understand what that means.)
So now we get back to smoking ciga-rettes while driving.
Smoking cigarettes while driving is known to cause accidents, not just road-side fires.
And while a smoking driver can be charged with distracted driving, it tends not to happen much, unless a cigarette can be definitively shown to be the cul-prit.
So it’s long past time we specify – as we did with cellphones – that it’s illegal to smoke cigarettes that cause accidents and fires.Read Matthew Claxton’s Painful Truth online

LettersDear Editor,
Thank you again for the wonderful night out.
We just moved [here three months ago] and are finally starting to feel more settled in. So we entered this [TIMES’ Picnic in the Park] con-test for a nice family night out of the house.
We attempted an out-door movie downtown last summer.
However, it was so packed, even though we got there early – and because you had to be there so early – Brody fell asleep as soon as the movie began.
We figured this was a much more pleasant way to attempt an out-door show.
People did give us some strange looks about the caution tape [which roped off their VIP seating area – part of the prize]. I think they must have thought we did that ourselves, haha!
Dinner from Hunger Management was deli-cious!
Garett [Cooper, her boyfriend] had the prawn sandwich, Brody [Maguire, her son] stuck with his
typical chicken fingers and chips, and I had the chicken and onion sandwich.
All of us had satisfied stomachs and are look-
ing forward to finding him at a market soon.
The entertainment was great as well! Good music!
The market was
small, but Brody got a new toy out of it from a new comic store that is open, and I bought a couple beautiful neck-laces from one of the vendors.
We lasted until about 10:30 p.m., when Brody was falling asleep.
His friend and his mom joined us, as well. However, they were able to make it through the whole movie.
Once again, thank you so much!
It was a treat, to not have to rush to find a spot after work and be totally taken care of!
Jessica Maguire, Maple Ridge

Jessica Maguire, her boyfriend Garett Cooper, and her nine-year-old son Brody sat in a cordoned off area at Memorial Peace Park, their space complete with chairs, a picnic blanket, a cooler with cold beverages, and popcorn, as well as a full meal for each provided by Hunger Management food truck. They won The TIMES Picnic in the Park contest.
Last week, municipal and provincial officials were told that kids in and around Cliff Avenue’s tent city struggle to sleep at night, as area residents applied pressure to the issue dealt with. Readers reacted... “Poor children they didn’t ask to live on the street. We must do something for this poor children.”
– Amm le
“Ok, here’s the solution: the mayor and social workers get together and either A. Find subsidized apartments, or B. Build another apartment and then do this – offer free housing if they agree to a drug test, as well as they offer eight hours [of work] a day for a total of 40 a week for free housing… If they do not want to offer time to clean, maintain, or other jobs available within Maple Ridge then they should move onto another town.”
– Diabetic Dabber
“Our great Mayor Nicole Read told the public that the camp was to be dispersed last month, an… as far as I can tell, it has tripled in size in the last month.”
– Jenny Dumont
“Loving that our mayor is actually out in the street doing.”– Wolf Bar
“For those saying to simply ‘evict’ the homeless people, give them an actual place to go and the problem will be solved – as the article stated that in the past this has been done. By evicting the homeless we are not solving the problem of homelessness we are just moving it to another area.”
– Kayla Levins
“Lol. How do you think they got here? That’s exactly what Van[couver] did during the Olympics. Packed them up and shipped them this way… are we just going to keep moving them around to be someone else’s issue?”
– Luke Dickenson
“There is an easy way to solve this. Set up tent city in front of MLA’s homes and the premier’s home. Why punish innocent, working people?”
– Derek Frigon
“Eviction date in advance and act on it accordingly…this has to end.”

Dear Editor,Bob D’Eith gives the
typical NDP solution for homeless – govern-ments need to just tax more and give more. [Tent city a result of cuts, July 9, TIMES].
The problem keeps coming back to one thing: lack of affordable housing.
The City needs to look at ways affordable housing can be built.
Dan Banov, Maple Ridge
Put up moneyDear Editor,
Bob D’Eith is missing the NDP in the trium-virate of parties he listed as responsible for the homeless situation.
NDP leader Tom Mulcair recently announced a plan to “build stronger cities and communities.”
Given the party’s past track record, is this in their budget?
Cherryl Katnich, Maple Ridge
Dear Editor,Letter writer [and fed-
eral NDP candidate in this riding] Bob D’Eith appears to believe that the Cliff Avenue tent city, and homelessness in general, are prob-lems that can be solved by governments just spending more taxpay-ers’ money [Tent city a result of cuts, July 9 Letter, TIMES].
That, of course, is the NDP solution to many complex problems.
Although it is gen-erally recognized that housing is a provincial government responsib-ility, Mr. D’Eith appears to be unaware of the significant role that the federal government has played, and continues to play, in affordable housing.
Frankly, I’m tired of the NDP’s hackneyed attempts to perpetuate the myth that they’re the only party that cares about people.
It’s just not true.Randy Kamp,

This year’s Bard on the Bandstand is filled with tragedy, comedy, fantasy and one truly fierce bear.RONDA [email protected]
The Winter’s Tale is a classic Shakespearean tale of love, loss, and redemption.
It holds all the elements to capture an audience’s attention, including a really fierce looking bear puppet, according to actor Linda MacLean.
MacLean, a Pitt Meadows resident, has been part of the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society for about six years and took on her biggest challenge this year– that of being co-producer of the Shakepearean play, as well as playing a pivotal role in it.
She plays Paulina, a strong woman will-ing to stand up to the king, able to with-stand losing her husband to a bear, and a carrier of unshakable faith.
“It’s probably the most interest-ing female character in Shakespeare,” MacLean said. “She has a voice that’s strong enough to confront the king. It’s a pretty meaty character.”
While MacLean embraced her character, she also, by a strange turn, made (with
the aid of stage manager Jen Challenger) the bear puppet responsible for eating her on-stage husband.
“He does look a little scary even though he’s a big puppet,” she said. “We have no business having a bear that looks like that because we had no idea what we were doing. We had so much fun on just that one aspect.”
Much of the play’s success will come from others like Linda who have jumped in and taken things on to make it all come together, said director Cathie Young.
“It’s been great working with the whole cast,” Young added. “It’s a huge com-mitment by all these people to make this happen.”
One of Young’s favourite plays, The
Winter’s Tale, moves from tragedy into comedy, and family.
“With a magical ending. We’ve pitched it as a fairy tale for a summer’s eve,” she said.
Kids are in the show in addition to the adult thespians, taking on roles as musi-cians and castle guards.
“There is always the involvement of everyone who comes out,” said Young. “There is this big myth that Shakespeare is difficult.”
“We also have a deaf actor,” she added. “It’s beautiful actually to watch the lan-guage in sign.”
Young describes her job as a privilege.“The Winter’s Tale is one of my favour-
ites, it’s kind of a family show in a way, it’s all about family,” she said.
With the show opening tonight (July 16) in Pitt Meadows at Spirit Square, everyone involved is focused on bringing it together.
“The show does go on, no matter what,” said MacLean. “No matter how you feel the week before, it all comes together.”
The show runs July 16 to 18 at Spirit Square in Pitt Meadows and July 23 to 25 on the bandstand in Maple Ridge’s Memorial Peace Park.
All shows start at 8 p.m. with pre-show entertainment beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Organizers suggest audience members bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on, as well as a donation to the Friends in Need Food Bank.

A local committee invites the community to share thoughts and ideas about religious beliefs.RONDA [email protected]
Formed close to two years ago, the Building Interfaith Bridges steering committee is hosting a picnic to invite others in the community to get to know the committee, what it does, and discuss
various religions.Ahmed A. Yousef, in
charge of public affairs for the committee, noted it’s the first summer picnic the group has held.
“We are a committee of individuals, representing different faiths from here in Maple Ridge,” he said.
The picnic is a potluck, so those attending are asked to bring a food dish to share, a plate and utensils, and most
importantly a chair. The event is at noon on Saturday,w July 18
at Haney Nokai Park at 222nd Street and Brown Avenue, just north of Dewdney Trunk Road.
“We’re inviting people to bring out ideas and thoughts,” Yousef said. “And introduce ourselves to the community.”
Throughout the year, the committee organizes events to promote the discussion of different reli-gious points of view. This includes talks held at the Maple Ridge library.
“This year, we’re doing something different,” he noted. “We’re having each faith being show-cased or presented, then opening up to the audi-ence for questions.”
The first talk is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sept. 30. “We’re doing them every two weeks,” Yousef added.

Cythera Transition House benefits from the sale of Rakhi.
RONDA [email protected]
Working together with the City of Surrey, the City of Maple Ridge is participating in a campaign to help stop domestic abuse.
Rakhi bracelets have a long- standing tradition in India. Sisters tie bracelets on brothers’ wrists symbolizing love and respect.
Staff with the City of Maple Ridge embraced the program, which has run in Surrey for more than five years to bring aware-
ness to domestic violence. Bracelets purchased from
Surrey are on sale until Friday for $5, with $4 from each going to the programs and services of Cythera Transition House Society.
According to Roberta O’Brien, Cythera’s new coordinator of violence against women in rela-tionships, the response has been positive for the program.
“I put it out through the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Katzie Community Network,” she said. “Four or five agencies said they would sell them internally.”
O’Brien also contacted the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association and, “four businesses jumped on it right away.”
One of those businesses is
Crazy About Clothes on 228th Street.
O’Brien noted the purple brace-lets are hand made by women in India as a way to help improve their financial conditions.
“Traditionally the bracelets were quite big and bulky... not practical,” noted O’Brien. “These are beautiful and much smaller.”
The size is beneficial as the Rakhi concept is that the bracelet is worn until it falls off.
Brothers wear the bracelet to indicate that they stand with their sisters against domestic violence. This tradition continues even after a woman is married.
O’Brien would love to see people around Maple Ridge wear-ing the bracelets as a show of support.

Musicians who played at the Maple Ridge Hotel are gathering for a reunion session.RONDA [email protected]
It’s his voice that draws a person in and gives away his ongoing life as a musi-cian.
Singer Rocky Swanson vis-ited The TIMES office recently to talk about an upcoming event that will reunite some of his favourite people to take part in a much loved activity.
“What’s popped into my mind too, since the closing of the [Maple] Ridge [Hotel], is that it was a gathering place for all walks of life,” Swanson said. “It sounds kind of haywire, but they’ve scattered. Some to the Legion, some to Shooters, some to coffee shops... they’ve lost that camaraderie.”
Swanson spoke about the Maple Ridge hotel, and the jam sessions held there on Sundays, as a place and time where everyone was welcome.
That was lost in June 2007 when the loca-tion closed and was ultimately torn down in June 2009. Interestingly, the month of June marks when the hotel opened (1939), closed, and was demolished.
“Every Sunday, the jam ses-sion, that was the gathering place,” Swanson noted. “The Ridge was also the place you went if you wanted to find labourers or tradesmen. That’s where you went.”
TIMES photographer Rick Moyer was one of those musi-cians who took part in the Sunday jam sessions.
Together, Moyer and Swanson hatched a plan to recreate some of that old music in a reunion to be held at the Army, Navy and Air Force Unit 379 (at 22326 North Rd.) this Saturday, July 18 from 3 p.m. to closing.
“It was Rick Moyer [who had the idea],” Swanson said. “He was talking to me one day and
he said, ‘what do you think about doing a reunion at the Army and Navy?’ Judy [Spear] was there that day and said that’s a great idea.”
President of the ANAF club, Judy Spear added, “Someone
should have done it years ago.”
Spear is pre-pared for a huge crowd at the club.
“We’ve got a food truck coming, Dan from Hunger Management, and we’ll have drink specials,” she said.
Swanson said organizing events of this calibre can sometimes be worrisome
with uncertainty of how many people will attend and whether it will be suc-cessful or not.
“In this case, the ver-bal buzz is incredible,” he noted. “The word of mouth is incredible. By all indications it’s going to be a very big success.”
Just like the jams at the Maple Ridge Hotel, this will be one, big rotating session with musicians coming and going throughout the day.
“It’s basically a remake of the old jam,” Swanson said.
Kevin Assoun, also know as the Shovel
Playing Man, will be on hand, as will many of the musi-cians who were a standard at the Maple Ridge Hotel back in the day.
“We’re really hoping some of the
old guys show up,” Spear said.“Like me,” responded
Swanson who continued. “The hotel would hire a back-up band, I guess you could call it, which consisted of various musicians, but the one main-stay musician of the jam ses-sion was always Kevin Assoun. He just had that charisma and of course he was a very talent-ed guitar player.”
Although Assoun can’t play the guitar anymore due to a stroke he had a
number of years ago, Swanson said the Shovel Playing Man will sing some old favourites.
Swanson will be playing the first set and is hoping to be joined by both the “old legends” and “young jam-
mers.” Simply bring an
instrument to take part.
Those who aren’t musicians but enjoyed the jams at the Maple Ridge Hotel, or want to find out what it was all about, are wel-come to come
hear the standards and classic country, blues, and folk songs.
To find out more about this Saturday’s concert, leave a message for Spear at 604-463-6333.

It was a sad day in June 2009 when the iconic Maple Ridge Hotel was torn down.
The original Maple Ridge Hotel was a gathering place for labourers and musicians after it opened in June 1939.

“There might be some young jammers who might just want to play with these older guys.”Judy Spear

MAPLE RIDGE & PITT MEADOWS TIMES
Here are some safe driving tips for when you are heading out on the road this summer:
Impaired driving
Impaired driving is one of the leading causes of death in Canada. In fact, the greatest numbers of alcohol-related crashes occur during the summer months (June, July, August.) And approximately one in three collisions involve alcohol and one in ten drivers after 10pm have consumed alcohol.
Driving Fatigue
Canadians often travel tremendous distance when they go on vacations. This creates a temptation to keep driving for extended periods even when tired. Fatigue is a form of impairment, so don’t give into the temptation to push on. If you feel fatigued, have a good sleep before you take the wheel. It might be better to delay your trip until the morning when you feel fresh and energized. Rest stops are important.
Car Mechanical Safety
It is a good idea to check your vehicle’s fluid levels, tire inflation and lights when you stop at a service station for gas. A few minutes of checking can save you hours of costly repairs down the road.
Have a safe and happy summer!

After seven years of marriage, Surrey’s
Samantha Greffard is going on a honey-moon, thanks to a Maple Ridge auto dealer.
Greffard and her two-year-old daughter Leah were among a few dozen people on hand Tuesday evening at the Maple Ridge Hyundai car lot in Albion for the dealer’s annual giveaway.
While numerous prizes were given out, Greffard walked away as the big winner. Her recent purchase of a car at Maple Ridge Hyundai, entered her and more than 50 others into Tuesday’s draw for the grand prize of $10,000.
Asked what she’d do with her windfall, Greffard said she’s
going on “long over-due” honeymoon.

“With Meet My Market month, we’re encouraging visitors to introduce a friend to their market – and to show off the beautiful
in season foods, and great neighbourhood.”

One of Maple Ridge’s key east-west arterial routes is in the process of receiving a major upgrade

JOEY moved into a new apartment with his owner who unfortu-nately died shortly after. He was so traumatized he hid in the mattress. When we went to get him it was like trying to catch a wild animal. He was completely untouchable. When we nally got him, he went to another shelter where he did not improve, and ended up with us.For the rst little while he was shy and withdrawn. Then almost over-night he turned into a loving, sweet, cuddly boy. It is hard to believe this is the same cat. His transformation has been beyond amazing. Joey is only about 2 years old and will make a wonderful companion.
KEATS grew up on the streets and comes across as a tough guy who sometimes forgets he no longer has to ght to survive. Keats is about 5 years old (all of which he spent on the streets), likes to talk, loves humans but does not demand attention, and is pretty indifferent to the other cats in his pen. Keats is FIV positive. FIV can only be passed to other cats. He will need to be an only cat or share a home with another FIV positive feline. Keats will never get his kit-ten years back, but the tiny sparkle in his wise eyes tells us that in the right, loving home he will be able to get past all the bad stuff and enjoy his life to the fullest.
This little guy is de nitely not a cat. This is SHELDON the bunny. Once in a while we take in small animal that have nowhere else to go, or who may be in trouble. Sheldon is just such a bunny. He is about 4 years old and one of the sweetest bunnies we have ever had. Shel-don likes to sit in your lap and be cuddled. His previous family would leave the door to his cage open and Sheldon had the run of the house. He always came back to his cage to use the litter box. So here we have a cute, friendly, potty trained, and smart little bunny who gets along with cats and dogs. He’s the perfect guy for the perfect family.

CARLOS has been featured here before. He came to us from anoth-er shelter where no one expressed any interest in him. It seems that the same is true at Katie’s Place. Carlos is a plain black cat who is now about 14 years old. When Carlos came to us he had an ear in-fection, desperately needed groom-ing, was underweight and anemic. This poor guy has obviously been through his share of troubles. Life has not been kind to this old boy. Carlos is not a demanding cat. A sunny windowsill, a comfy chair, a place where he can feel safe, and loved is all he needs. He shouldn’t spend his nal years in a shelter, he deserves better.

Adult cats are available for a discounted adoption fee through the Maple Ridge SPCA.RONDA [email protected]
It’s kitten season and that means the Maple Ridge SPCA is filled with felines looking for love.
Jenn Stack, local shelter manager, noted there are cur-rently 18 adult cats waiting for their “furever” homes.
Adoptions of these more mature cats are half price from July 17 to 27.
“We’re doing the event because it’s kit-ten season right now and a lot of people, when they come in, see the cute kittens and the adult cats don’t get as much attention,” Stack said.
No matter what kind of adult cat people have in mind, BC SPCA shelters have all shapes, sizes, and colours available.
“Anything over the age of six months is considered an adult, so these cats have a lot of life.”
All of the cats looking for love have been spayed or neutered and vet-checked to ensure they are ready for their new home.
Adult cats also tend to be calmer than their kitten counterparts and the fact that they are litter box trained is a plus for most adopters.
Not to mention the fact that the love adult cats give is just as good as that of a kitten.
“We are hoping to find some amazing homes for some very special cats,” Stack noted.
Two of the adult cats in the shelter are Booger and Sunny. Both are nine years old, short haired, and black.
“Black cats stay here three time longer than any other cats,” said Stack.
“They are a bit shy, but if you just give them a little bit of time, they warm up, they purr, and will give head
butts and want cheek rubs.”Both Booger and Sonny have
been at the Maple Ridge shel-ter at 10235 Jackson Rd. for 30 days. This is problematic because of the volume of kit-tens coming in.
Kittens are being adopted, but as Stack noted, they are coming in just as fast, if not faster. It’s the adult cats that
are being overlooked and there is a wait list of other cats still to come into the shelter.
“It’s hard to rotate [adult cats] between shelters because we all have the same issue,” Stack said.
With 50 per cent off the adoption fee, Stack hopes people will be more likely to consider an adult cat over a kitten.
The goal in Maple Ridge for the adult cat adoption event, presented by Hill’s Science Diet as part of its Food, Shelter, and Love partnership program with BC SPCA, is to find homes for all 18 adult cats currently at the shelter, including Booger and Sunny.
Hill’s is the main provider of food for the shelter animals and the company also gives sample packs of food to go home with adopters for their new best friend.
Stack noted keeping animals on the same food after they leave the shelter helps limit any concerns with stomach upset due to the stress of a new environment. It’s one less thing that changes and keeps gastrointestinal issues to a minimum.
For anyone considering adopting the “purrfect” new companion, the event starting tomorrow (July 17) at B.C.’s SPCA branches is the ideal opportunity to make a match.

A Ridge business owner hands over the reins, and moves forward with a prestigious award.ERIC [email protected]
She sold her business after 25 years at the helm this year, and last month, June Booth, former owner of Quantum Gymnastics in Maple Ridge, received a lifetime achievement award by Gymnastics Canada.
“I was very honoured to receive this,” she said.
For Booth, the award is much
more than just a flashy piece of hardware.
It’s recognition of her contribu-tions to the gymnastics commun-
ity and the sport itself. And though gymnastics has
been a life-long adventure for Booth, her tenure as owner of Quantum was first set in motion back in the mid-’80s.
“We had actually come to Maple Ridge during Expo ‘86,” she explained. “We liked the commun-ity, the size of it, and there was no gymnastics program here at the time. It just seemed like an ideal location, in an area we wanted to live in.”
The family made the move from Alberta, where Booth had been working as a coach, and where her children were already very active in the sport – including her son who was competing nationally and “doing quite well.”
There were challenges to be sure, when it came to getting the
business off the ground.“It actually took me about a
year-and-a-half to get zoning per-mission, and things like that, but we eventually got it open in the industrial park,” she recalled.
Now, a quarter-century later, the business continues to thrive.
‘We’ve had kids compete nation-ally, and internationally over the years, and we average about 1,300 to 1,400 kids a year who are mem-bers.”
Running a successful business such as Quantum has been “very rewarding,” Booth said.
“To see the number of young coaches coming through – as well as the number of competi-tive athletes and ex-coaches from Quantum that are still involved in the sport is just amazing.”

Last weekend, Ridge Meadows Burrards teams proved they are the Alpha dogs of B.C. girls lacrosse.
The Burrards were involved in three of four gold medal games to cap the 2014 Minor Box Lacrosse Provincial Championships in Port Coquitlam.
From those games, the Ridge Meadows association now boasts B.C. champions in both peewee and midget divisions. In an all-local
midget final, Ridge Meadows #1 (coached by Chris Gill) clipped Ridge Meadows #2 (led by bench boss
Jason McDole) by a 3-2 count to claim gold. Ridge Meadows #1 scored with just over a minute remain-ing to win.
“I thought it was an unbelievable showing by both teams,” Gill said. “The fact we were able to dom-inate... shows how much talent the girls have.”
McDole’s midget Burrards’ only losses came at the hands of Gill’s team.

Ridge Meadows boxla teams were as good as provincial gold in A1 and A2 divisions.

…continued from page A23As for timing of the sale this year? “Old age,” the 68-year-old Booth laughed. “I
was just ready and it was time. I have been lim-iting my coaching over the past few years, but staying busy with gymnastics outside the gym.”
Booth resolved that if someone wanting to buy the business came along, that would be great, which turned out to be what happened.
If the business had not been sold, Booth “likely would have been content to just manage it from a distance,” she elaborated. “Then I got the offer on it, and everything fell into place.”
Booth will remain connected to the club, and involved with the gymnastics community.
“I think if retiring and selling the business meant that I was out of the sport entirely, it would have been much more difficult to let it go,” she said.
Booth received her lifetime achievement after being nomin-ated by Gymnastics BC, through Gymnastics Canada.
“It’s the highest honour they have, and the award is based on a person’s contribution to the sport over the years,” she explained.
And Booth’s resume is an impressive one.“I’ve been a national coaching program certifi-
cation developer, I’ve trained many new course conductors and learning facilitators over the years, I’ve been an international judge, repre-senting Canada all over the world, and I’ve host-ed numerous national and international events for Gymnastics Canada.”
For Booth, the joy in Quantum has been “watching the kids do well, and the enjoyment of working with them.”
The sport has also been a major part of her family, and her children’s upbringing.
“My son was an acrobat with Cirque De Soleil, and is now a head coach for them. My daugh-ter’s an international judge, and her and I have travelled all over the world together, and my husband – before he passed away – did all of our maintenance, and built the equipment.”
Going forward, Booth is optimistic she’s leav-ing Quantum in good hands.
She’s also looking forward to “getting done all the things I never seem to have time to do.”
Other activities keeping her busy are her involvement with Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind (“I’m currently training a guide puppy for them,” she said,) spending time with her grand-daughter, and training learning facilitators to teach gymnastics courses.
And as for Quantum itself? “Hopefully, the gym will continue,” she said. “There’s a really good strong basis. It’s a great sport for anybody and a great foundation to build on.”
