With the economy going into a recession, more job losses every day, less moneyavailable to spend—what is a shopper todo? The new buzzword is “RESALE”.

“Resale has always been a recession-proofbusiness,” says Adele Meyer, ExecutiveDirector of the National Association of Resale& Thrift Shops. “Business steadily increasesduring down economic times…We are onesegment of retail posting impressive salesfigures in a slumping economy… A recentsurvey of NARTS members revealed that85.8% of the responding storesexperienced an increase in new customersand 74.5% had an increase in newsuppliers (consignment/seller customers)…Resale/consignment stores have grown innumber by about 5% annually in recentyears and is a $200 billion dollar a yearindustry,” Meyer reported.

Articles about penny-pinching shopperstaking a second look at secondhand storeshave captured media attention across theboard, including CNN Money, Kiplinger’sMagazine, Associated Press, GoodHousekeeping, Forbes, Newsweek,Business Week, the Today Show, plusdozens of local community publications.

The Houston Chronicle featured the advantages of consignment/thriftshopping in their Saturday, January 3rdSTAR section. It described a lady whosaid, “My favorite shops are consignmentand thrift shops…I buy everything fromfurniture to clothes.” She has decoratedher home with furnishings from secondhand stores, thus earning recognition onseveral design-centric websites. “I love torummage and hunt when I shop,” shesaid. Price is also a big consideration forher. “For the price of going out to eat,you can buy a whole new outfit!” Shedivides her time between thrift andconsignment shops.

The consummate second-hand shopperwill shop both thrift and consignmentshops. Thrift stores sell donated items andtend to have more variety and cheaperprices than the “for profit” consignmentshops; however, some shoppers prefer lessvariety and better quality merchandise, including the high-end brands more oftenfound in consignment shops.

As I visit consignment shops I havenoticed a big influx of merchandisecoming into these stores. People who needcash are unloading possessions to selloutright or on consignment. (CNN reportsthat pawnshops are doing a boomingbusiness also). Children’s stores areespecially full.

Shoppers have many shopping choicestoday. Retailers are closing stores, going outof business, and offering their merchandiseat deep discounts. The Internet has manybargain shopping sites to choose from, sowhy should you turn to secondhand stores?Because the potential of discovering a trulygreat bargain for your home or wardrobecould be right in your neighborhood! Andfinding it is half the fun!
