And the devil said to him, “To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus answered him, “It is wrien, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’” Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is wrien, ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him unl an opportune me. Perciò, se prostrerai in adorazione dinanzi a me, tuo sarà tuo». “Jesus, for forty days was tempted by the devil.” Jesus spent 40 days in the desert being tempted by the devil. His temptaons were not somehow weaker because of who he is – in fact they were probably more intense. Why would he do this? Why would the Holy Spirit lead him to such a difficult me? God loves us so much that he was willing to endure every form of hardship and human suffering that enters into our lives. Temptaon comes from our weakness but also from the evil one. It can be a heavy burden and cause heavy emoonal and psychological pain. Some days we may feel the loneliness and isolaon of one who is driven into the desert of our sins. We may feel as though the wild beasts of our disordered passions are geng the best of us. Jesus endured and never gave in to the temptaons. This tells us that he can be our strength and inspiraon. So whether our own ‘desert’ is only a slight agitaon or a struggle against complete despair, Jesus truly understands. He conquered the desert and is able to conquer any desert in our lives too as we turn to him in prayer and look to him for guidance. Today’s Gospel: Luke 4.1-13 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,

returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the

wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the

devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when

they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, “If

you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a

loaf of bread.” Jesus answered him, “It is wri!en, ‘One does

not live by bread alone.’” Then the devil led him up and

showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And

the devil said to him, “To you I will give their glory and all

this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it

to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be

yours.” Jesus answered him, “It is wri!en, ‘Worship the Lord

your God, and serve only him.’” Then the devil took him to

Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple,

saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself

down from here, for it is wri!en, ‘He will command his

angels concerning you, to protect you,’ and ‘On their hands

they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot

against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not

put the Lord your God to the test.’” When the devil had

finished every test, he departed from him un,l an

opportune ,me.

Perciò, se prostrerai in adorazione dinanzi a me, tu&o sarà tuo».

“Jesus, for forty days was tempted by the devil.” Jesus spent 40 days in the desert being tempted by the

devil. His tempta, ons were not somehow weaker because

of who he is – in fact they were probably more intense. Why

would he do this? Why would the Holy Spirit lead him to

such a difficult ,me? God loves us so much that he was

willing to endure every form of hardship and human

suffering that enters into our lives. Tempta,on comes from

our weakness but also from the evil one. It can be a heavy

burden and cause heavy emo, onal and psychological pain.

Some days we may feel the loneliness and isola,on of one

who is driven into the desert of our sins. We may feel as

though the wild beasts of our disordered passions are

ge3ng the best of us. Jesus endured and never gave in to

the tempta, ons. This tells us that he can be our strength

and inspira,on. So whether our own ‘desert’ is only a slight

agita,on or a struggle against complete despair, Jesus truly

understands. He conquered the desert and is able to

conquer any desert in our lives too as we turn to him in

prayer and look to him for guidance.
