Parco to Move into Former Iwataya BuildingThe urban shopping complex management company Parco of Tokyo will become the new tenant of the former Iwataya building in Tenjin, Fukuoka City, it was revealed. The building's owner, Tsuzuki Gakuen, announced on the 8th that an agreement had been signed. Parco will rent the building and remodel it to turn it into a shopping complex. No time frame has been set for the completion of the work. The building in the center of Kyushu's largest shopping district has been vacant for four years.
Saga to Conduct WiMAX TrialSaga Prefecture announced they will be the first in Kyushu to conduct trials of the WiMAX high speed wireless service for broadband. The trials are scheduled from mid-February to the end of March. The objective is to achieve high-speed communications for disaster information a n d e l i m i n a t e t h e d i f f e r e n c e s i n telecommunications capabilities between different regions in the country. Two antennas for the trials have been set up on the top of the prefectural office building.
72 Kyushu Electric to Hike Rates More than 72Kyushu Electric Power is expected to raise electric power rates for the period from April to June by more than 72 per month for the average household based on their system that automatically adjusts rates with changes in prices for oil, LNG and coal. Saibu Gas is also expected to raise their fees. This would be the third consecutive quarterly increase in rates for both companies.
JALJAL to Introduce First ClassJapan Air Lines announced it would begin offering first class service on its flights between Fukuoka and Tokyo's Haneda Airport starting in April. The first class service on the two daily roundtrip flights will cost an additional 8,000. The passenger lounge in the terminal also will be remodeled in conjunction with the new service.
Kitakyushu Enters Agreement with Korean FirmThe city of Kitakyushu announced it had reached agreement with the South Korean company C&Cruise to operate regularly scheduled ferry service between the Port of Moji and Busan, South Korea. The service is due to start in June and will feature six round trips per week. The two sides project 146,000 passengers in the first year.
Kyushu, Yamaguchi Provide Pollen InformationThe medical associations in the seven Kyushu prefectures and Yamaguchi Prefecture have begun providing a service on their websites showing the movement and dispersal of pollen. The pollen from Japanese cedar is expected to begin spreading on the 10th, and already has started in some places. Forecasts call for higher pollen counts this year in Fukuoka City and Miyazaki City, but lower in the capital cities of the other five Kyushu prefectures.
Population Outflow Reported for All KyushuThe Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications released its report on population movement for 2007. The report showed that all seven of the Kyushu prefectures and Yamaguchi and Okinawa prefectures had net population outflows during the year. Most notable among these was Fukuoka Prefecture, which reported its first net population outflow since 1988, a period of 19 years.
NPO NPO Bank to be Established in KumamotoA non-profit bank, in which volunteers will deposit funds to be used for lending to enterprises of their choice, will be established in Kumamoto Prefecture. The institution, to be called the Kumamoto Social Bank, will begin soliciting funds in February. They hope to foster enterprises working in the social welfare and environmental fields. Other NPO banks have been established in the Tokyo area, but this reportedly will be the first in Kyushu.
4.7% Kyushu Unemployment Rate ImprovesThe Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications released statistics for the average unemployment rate in the Kyushu/Okinawa region in 2007. The regional rate was 4.7%, an improvement of 0.3 percentage point and the first time the rate was below 5.0% in nine years. It was also the fifth annual decline from peak set in 2002.
Lawson's Promotes Kyushu Foods NationwideThe convenience store chain Lawson's launched the Kyushu Fair promotion on the 22nd to sell products made using Kyushu ingredients in its sales outlets nationwide. A total of 12 products will be available. Lawson's has conducted similar regional promotions since last May, and this one focusing on Kyushu is the fourth. Its promotion will run until February 1.
Record High for Kyushu Imports and ExportsAccording to statistics released by Moji Customs for imports and exports in 2007 in the Kyushu economic region, which includes Yamaguchi and Okinawa prefectures, record highs were set in both categories. Aggregate exports stood at 8.73 trillion yen for the year, a 15.2% year-on-year increase, while imports totaled 7.9444 trillion yen, a 10.7% jump. This was the sixth straight annual increase for exports and the fifth straight annual rise for imports. Exports of automobiles were particularly strong to China, as were exports of steel to South Korea and other Asian countries.
4 IC Transportation Entities Plan Joint Smart CardNishitetsu, JR Kyushu, the Fukuoka City Transportation Bureau, and JR East (Tokyo) have begun talks to create a smart card that can be used by the transportation systems of all four entities, as well as being used as a pre-paid e-money card. They hope to have developed the card by the spring of 2010. JR East already uses the Suica card, Nishitetsu plans to introduce the nimoca card this spring, and JR Kyushu plans to launch the Sugoca card next spring. Fukuoka City will also inaugurate a yet-unnamed card next year.
,30 Self-Study Space Popular Among Men in 30sA building in the Tenjin area of Fukuoka City is the first in Kyushu to rent space in a large room to individuals for studying or writing. When the service first began, only a few people a day used it, but now as many as 40 people are renting space every day, the majority of them men in their 30s. When asked why they are paying for a space that would be available for free in a library or in their homes, they said that in addition to the quiet, being in the presence of other people diligently pursuing their interests increased their motivation.
IT Miyazaki Governor Plans to Make IT CenterM i y a z a k i P r e f e c t u r e G o v . H i d e o Higashikokubaru intends to refashion Miyazaki as a center for the IT industry as part of his Miyazaki Hills Concept, it was learned. Suggestions as a possible site where IT companies can locate include SeaGaia, the large resort facility that has been closed. Named after the Roppongi Hills section in Tokyo, which has many high rise buildings occupied by many people in IT companies, the plan hopes to attract call centers and software developers.

Utilities to Strengthen Lifeline ServicesKyushu Electric Power and Saibu Gas will strengthen their systems for dealing with earthquakes and other natural disasters. On January 29, Kyushu Electric launched an e-mail service providing information to registered cell phone users on the number of households with power outages at the municipal level. Meanwhile, Saibu Gas will begin operation in April of a headquarters focused on restoring services following a natural disaster.
Rainmaking Experiment Produces Small SuccessA team of researchers from Kyushu University working in cooperation with the city of Sasebo in Nagasaki Prefecture conducted their first artificial rainmaking experiment. The results were somewhat successful, with about one millimeter of rain falling an hour later. Sasebo is currently suffering from a drought and has instituted water use restrictions. The city announced it would try again before the end of the business year in March.
07 17.7% Kyushu Housing Starts Plunge 17.7% Last YearThe Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport released figures for housing starts in Kyushu in 2007 showing a total of 99,088, which is a 17.7% drop from the previous year. Nationwide, housing starts also were down 17.8%, the lowest level since 1967. The ministry attributes the slowdown to construction industry prudence in examining new stricter standards for earthquake resistance that were adopted in June.
Robot Guide Trials Begin in Kitakyushu AirportYasukawa Electric Corp. of Kitakyushu and Zenrin DataCom of Tokyo teamed up to develop a robot for transporting and guide purposes, and trials of the device began at the Kitakyushu Airport on the 7th. Passengers can load their luggage on the device and give voice instructions to their destination, and the robot will automatically go to that location. Plans are for the robots to go into full-scale use in 2011.
Okinawa to be a Stand-Alone State?A group formed of opinion leaders in Okinawa Prefecture has taken the position of establishing Okinawa as a stand-alone state in the event Japan creates a system of local government based on 8 to 12 states in the next decade, as is being discussed. The group appears set to take the lead in public debate on the issue, and will hold more formal discussions in April to create a detailed vision. Existing plans have called for Okinawa to become part of the Kyushu bloc.
School Lunch Bread to Go Rice Flour?Fukuoka Prefecture is conducting a survey to investigate the potential for using rice flour to bake the bread used in school lunches. Substituting rice flour for wheat flour would have several objectives. It would boost declining rice consumption, i t would inculcate a sense of local production/local consumption in the children, and it would provide a protection against sharp rises in wheat prices.
