MATOS Objectives

• The Objectives of MATOS are to support:• Broader and more efficient use of acoustic tag tracking information

collected in the Mid-Atlantic and adjacent regions; • The integration of regional tag tracking information with the IOOS,

GOOS, and other observational networks, for the benefit of all parties; • Scientists, Managers, Fishermen, Conservationists, and other users

and potential users of acoustic tag tracking information.

Process

There will soon be ~10 real-time transmitting receivers in the Chesapeake Bay, and >100 delayed mode receivers.

Need assurance from this group that they will participate and support this project.

• Define the conditions of that support, to be included in grants and MOUs.• Create a MATOS Chesapeake Bay Advisory group to provide review and

feedback on the system operations and products

Value Proposition

The Value:

• Easier, automated access to data, data products, and visualizations• Support for other regional projects and cooperative networks (e.g., ACT)• Integrated data availability – all tag data, real & near real time, in situ

environmental data, integration with fields from observing platforms (including satellites) and models

MATOS has been developed by RPS Applied Science Associates through support from ASMFC, NOAA, NCBO, and gratefully acknowledges cooperation from the OTN, Atlantic Cooperative Telemetry Network, ATN and regional investigators.

An Integrated Real-Time Water Quality Monitoring Network• Benefits:• MARACOOS is in process of IOOS certification• Our role in the region: Integration, QC and serving to public of ocean

information which meets federal standards• Liability hurdle met• Cost efficient• “One-stop shopping” through development and coordination of a

regional monitoring network

Process to Date

• Stakeholder Workshops• Sep 2013 – Delaware Bay • Mar 2014 – Chesapeake Bay• April 2015 – ISSF and NESSA• May 2015 – LI Sound (CT Shore)• Nov 2015 – Vibrio Forecasting NE regional workshop (Groton, CT)

• Coordination• Lead on proposal development for Chesapeake Bay nutrient monitoring project with STAR and

NCBO • Partner with UCONN, CT Sea Grant and CT Dept of Ag Bureau of AQ to develop sensor capability

in LI Sound, leverage federal funds• Co-host of NESSA Vibrio forecasting workshop (Nov 2015)• Responsive to FDA Wireless Seafood Buoy RFI• Developing-supporting Industry partnerships in MARACOOS region

Next Steps

• MATOS• Nov 23 User Interface Webinar• Dec 7 User Workshop at SERC, Edgewater, MD (and by webinar for long-distance users

• Northeast Region Vibrio Forecasting Workshop• Advancing Tools for Modeling, Forecasting and Managing for Vibrio spp. In the North East Region• Nov 17-18 UCONN Groton, CT• www.eventbrite.com/e/northeast-region-vibrio-forecasting-workshop-tickets-18905119722

• Workshop purpose: to assess the requirements and needs of stakeholders (shellfish growers, managers, public health officials, IOOS community) based on shellfish operations and harvest management practices, and the current state of the science for Vibrio forecast and risk assessment in the North East Region.

• Outcomes of this meeting will help shape NOAA’s effort in the development of forecasting tools that are tailored to the unique needs of the North East Region.

• MARACOOS is YOUR regional ocean observatory and is directed by the User Community
