Nā nga tungane Marist te Timatanga o te Kura.

On Friday we began the year with a powhiri to welcome our seven new staff and 95 new students. We know you will love being part of our College and enjoy all it has to offer. Students look fantastic in their uniform and I thank families for ensuring they returned to school in correct uniform and well groomed. Over the summer the Hermitage building has been stripped and refurbished. This has created a wonderful learning environment that the English department has shifted into. Upgrades to our facilities are only possible when parents support the school with attendance dues and contributions as the government does not provide for this in a Catholic school. School began on a very positive note and students are very settled, ready to get on with their learning. There are a number of events on our school calendar and I invite parents to join us at these events. Please feel very welcome. Our academic results for 2017 are again outstanding. The pass rate at level 1 was 79%, level 2 was 94% and level 3 was 91%. 51% of our current Year 12 students obtained a Merit or Excellence endorsement at level 1. We are very proud of their success. Tomorrow, as a nation, we celebrate Waitangi Day. We honour the bi-cultural heritage of our land in order to live a harmonious multi-cultural existence. New Zealand’s first bishop, Jean Baptiste François Pompallier, a Marist priest and comrade of St Marcellin Champagnat, was born in Lyon, France, in 1802. He arrived with other Marist priests and brothers in 1838 and as founder of the Catholic Church in Aotearoa New Zealand, Pompallier lived and worked for over 30 years in some of the most defining times of our country’s history. With the support of many Māori leaders, he insisted that a clause be added to the Treaty which would guarantee the right of religious freedom for all and of free and equal protection to Māori and other religious customs. This is called the fourth article.

Attendance Dues and ContributionsPayments can be made either through the Student Services Centre office at school or via internet banking: Account number: 03-1308-0004125-03 Please use the student ID number as reference so the payment can be coded correctly. If paying via internet, please allow 2 days for the payment to be processed. The SSC office is open during school hours, from 8.00am – 4.00pm. Students may make payments before school or during interval and lunch time. Parents are also welcome to pop in to make payments during the day. Statements for each student, showing what has been paid for, will be issued twice a month by email. Attendance Dues: Attendance Dues are a compulsory payment under the terms of the Private Schools Conditional Integration Act 1975 and a condition of enrolment at Marcellin College. Attendance Dues are charged for all students who attend Catholic Schools in New Zealand. Subject fees: In most core subjects there are no or very low fees. In specialist subjects, particularly in the senior school, it is necessary to pay for some equipment or materials that the students use and keep. Workbooks: Some subjects use workbooks in conjunction with textbooks. Where textbooks remain the property of the school and are not charged for, workbooks incur a fee as they are include work and study notes that are filled in by the students. These workbooks are not part of the stationery pack.

Contribution of $400 We invite parents to pay the college contribution which is applied to supplement the funding available from the government Operations Grant. If preferred, contributions may be paid in instalments to suit. Contributions are tax-deductible This funding is applied to:

sporting and musical equipment funding of library resources beyond what otherwise would be possible purchase and maintenance of ICT equipment maintenance of school facilities and equipment

We trust that this note explains the critical importance of the dues, charges, and contribution, and we look forward to your support so that we may continue to provide the best possible opportunities for your sons and daughters.

NZQA Examination TimetableStudents and their parents often enquire about the NZQA examination timetable in order to make advance bookings for their Christmas holidays. The 2018 timetable is printed later in this newsletter so that it can be kept for reference throughout the rest of the year.

StationeryIt is vital for your student’s academic success that they are fully equipped for learning. Please ensure they have all the required exercise books and have purchased homework books from Student Services this week. All students at all levels have been issued with lists which outline the stationery and equipment required. If you have lost our stationery list, you can get a copy at http://www.marcellin.school.nz/enrolment. Thank you for your support with this.

LockersA limited number of lockers are available for hire. $40, $50 or $60 for the year, depending on size. Students are also required to purchase a padlock for $12.50 which is refundable upon leaving.

Second-Hand Uniforms If you want to buy or want to donate second-hand uniforms that are still in good condition, please contact Claudia on 022 355 6995 (Claudia has taken over from Natasha). Alternatively, you can drop second-hand uniforms off to the Office.

Student AbsencesIf your child is absent from school, it is essential that you contact the school by 8.30am the morning of the absence, either by telephone, email or on our website. When your child returns to school they must have a written note from you. If your child is absent for three or more days, they must have a doctor’s certificate.

Start and End of DayClasses begin each day at 8.40am. Students need to be at school and ready for the day when the bell rings. Aiming to be on the grounds by 8.30am allows for a settled start to the day. School ends at 3.13pm. We have had to extend the day by three minutes to enable our periods to be the same length all day.

Picking Up and Dropping Off StudentsDear Parents, for health and safety of all our students, when dropping your child/ren at school or picking up, could you please come right into the school carpark through Gate 2 (and turn left if you are leaving towards Royal Oak, or turn right if you are leaving towards Three Kings) and park up before your child/ren exit/s or enters your car. Our school gate is very congested at the end of the day. If parents could stagger pick up times from 3.15-3.30pm, traffic will move easily. Thank you for your consideration.

Students Bringing Vehicles to SchoolIt is school policy to have students and parents apply to drive a vehicle to school. Any student wishing to drive a vehicle to school must request an application form from Mr Weijermars in the first instance. There is no parking for students on site, all parking is on Peet Avenue. Students with a restricted licence may apply for permission but the school will enforce the drivers licence rules in regard to having no passengers. Those with a full licence may carry passengers but passengers also need to have permission from the school and their parents to ride in a student driven vehicle. If parents have any questions, they may call Mr Weijermars at any time for clarification.

Building ChangesBuilders and painters were very busy at our school over the holiday break. The Hermitage building (old Year 7 & 8 area) has been totally refurbished and is now home to the English department. Year 7 & 8 classes have moved to the MacKillop building and have been refitted with all new desks and chairs for the students. On Tuesday 30th January, the staff blessed and rededicated the refurbished Hermitage building- the students have a lovely building to come back to!

Whooping Cough Notice Auckland Regional Public Health Services advises that pertussis (whooping cough) is in the community and the number of cases in schools has increased over the last two months. Pertussis is a highly infectious disease and can cause serious illness for some people. In the last 12 months, 1 in 6 cases has needed hospital treatment. Vaccination is free and offers the best protection against this disease - research shows vaccination is safe and effective. Four and 11 year olds are both eligible for a free booster dose – see your GP promptly to book this in. Children who have missed any doses are also able to get free immunisations, please check with your doctor if you are unsure of your child’s vaccination history. If your child has symptoms of pertussis please keep them at home away from school. Pertussis starts like a cold with a runny nose, cough, and fever and is spread by coughing. After 7-10 days the cough becomes more severe and prolonged coughing spasms occur that may end with a whoop, dry retching or vomiting. Pertussis in schools can be disruptive as students have to catch up on weeks of school work after falling ill and teachers need to work harder to support them. Pertussis disrupts families who need to make arrangements for childcare and doctors’ visits when their children are diagnosed. If you or your children are experiencing symptoms or you want more information visit your doctor or call Healthline for advice on 0800-611 116.

Student News / Student CongratulationsMihi Kasi Valu (Year 13 Head Boy) has been accepted into the National Youth Drama School in the Term 1 holidays at Toi Whakaari – National Drama School in Wellington. He also applied for and has been awarded a scholarship which will pay for his tuition.

Article in Onehunga Community News, February 2018

Congratulations to Marcellin College ex-students on graduating from Waikato University in December 2017 with the following qualification: Gloria OCHIENG (left 2005) – Bachelor of Social Sciences Jasmine TALOULI (left 2011) – Bachelor of Law Congratulations to another old boy from Marcellin – Leki Jackson-Bourke – he was featured in the Herald on the 24th January (link on our Facebook page for full article). Keep an eye on Leki Jackson-Bourke; if his 2017 success is anything to go by, we could be hearing a lot more from him. With playwright Maree Webster, Jackson-Bourke, 26, was one of the team behind last year's cult comedy Meet the Fakas — a Niuean language play which sold out at the Basement Theatre and twice at the Mangere Arts Centre. They collected a 2017 Auckland Theatre Award for the production while Jackson-Bourke was named as a best newcomer to the city's theatre scene. He added that gong to the prestigious Creative New Zealand Todd New Writers Bursary Grant which earned him $20,000 to put towards his next play He's the first Pasifika playwright to win the Todd award and also became one of our youngest published Pasifika playwrights last year after an earlier play he co-wrote, Inky Pinky Ponky, was included in Talanoa: Four Pacific Plays.
