Do what thou wilt sholl be the whole of the Law.

Marcelo Motta is likely one of the most controversial figureswithin the Thelemic community. The fierceness with which he

stated and promulgated his views lead him into countless conflictswith others, both within and without the Thelemic milieu. Neverthe-less, only the most jaded or blind individuals deny the man's abilityto elucidate topics that confound others. Indeed, even many of hismost vocal critics routinely cite his works and publications in theirown writings.

While most commonly known for his commentaries onthe Thelemic canon of Holy Books, he authored a series of epistlesentitled "Tracts on Aquarian Masonry", which form the corpus of his

conception of the social application of Thelema. It is in these pam-

phlets that he tackles issues often talked about, but rarely studied byother Thelemites. Rarer than his Equinox Z series, and even rarer

than his Oriflumme series, these simple staplebound pamphlets fetch

exorbitant fees on the antiquarian market. It is for this reason I have

sought to reissue them here, with improved layout and typography. The collection starts with the most well-known essay in this

series, "Letter to a Brasilian Mason". In this essay Motta clearlyand forcefully explains the Thelemic Gnostic conception of Christ,

it's historical basis, and the role of the Roman-Alexandrine Church

in suppressing this truth. It is no accident that Motta chose this topic

with which to introduce the New ,Eon to Brasilian Masonry. ThisGnostic interpretation of the Christ myth has a long tradition in eso-

teric Masonry. While the work of Yarker is explicitly quoted in the

text, the essay itself seems modeled on another work, the exquisite

1881 3 volume "History of Freemasonry" by Gould, which includes

a chapter on the Essenes (among others) which I am convinced

Motta was familiar with. One might assume that Motta, using richMasonic traditions and showing their expansion and application inthe New .B;on, felt he could thus ease their acceptance of the Law by

starting on familiar ground. The essay is further enhanced with an

added Biographical Note which was later incorporated into the "His-tory of the O.T.O. After Crowley's Death" in his Oriflamme series.

Page 9: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

A brief side note here: It should be made very clear thatMr. Motta lost the notorious lawsuit versus Grady McMurtry andthe "caliphate o.T.o.", which was named the legitimate successorto Aleister Crowley's o.T.o. The publication of these works is inno way meant to beat the dead horse of which o.T.o. is ..regular,,

or "legitimate". whatever your opinions on that one issue may be,the focus here is on his contribution to the application of the Law ofThelema on a societal scale. Therefore, the reader should keep inmind that any incidental reference in the texts to '.o.T.o.,, refer tothe organizationhe established, Society ordo Templi orientis, whichis a distinct and seperate organtzation from the caliphate.

Following "Letter" we have "Thelemic political Morality',and "of the Political Purposes". Taken together, these form a con-cise primer on his vision of a Thelemic society. The first, ..Thelemic

Political Morality" deals extensively with the role of a citrzen The-lemite in society, hir duties to that society, and society,s obligationsto hir. Thus it deals primarily with the condition of the individual.

In the second, "of the Political purposes", the more generaltopic of what constitutes a Thelemic political outlook is discussed. The establishment and enforcement of raw, relations between citi-zens, and such are the fare here as he lays out a theoretical frame-work for a Thelemic ideology.

The collection closes with the 19g0e.v. "Manifesto,, whichwas included primarily for historical reasons (though his readinglist may still be perused with profit, and all are now easily availablefor under us$ 10 with some searching) as well as ,.Liber oz,' , theso-called "Thelemic Bill of Rights" which forms the basis for hispolitical thought.

Finally, I have appended to the text a brief index of impor-tant names and terms as well as a bibliography and note on sources.

we hope you enjoy reading this work as much as we enjoyedproducing it, and may you all find Light, Life, Liberty, and Love!

Love is the law, love under will.

Lerrgn ro A BnasrlraN MasoNRio de Janeiro, 9 July 1963 e.v.

Dear Dr.G.:

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

I read with pleasure in the news thatBrazilian Masonryhas finally decided to take once more an active rolein the affairs of this nation. I remembered then myconversation with you, and our parting, when youremarked that in your opinion the Roman church wasa good introduction to adult life for children. I toldyou then: "Perhaps, but Masonry is infinitely better,,;and I take this opportunity to repeat and enlarge thatstatement.

I did not wish at the time to discuss the validity or lackof validity of the Roman church as a training groundfor children. one cannot discuss this subject. It is asubject that must - I repeat, must - be researched byevery responsible individual, particularly a high gradeMason, and particularly inBrazil, where that church hadso much influence in the psychological makeup of thepeople - with the results that we see at present.

For such a research, vitally important at this point, acareful analysis of evidence scattered in the works ofmany impartial and reputable observers is essential- an analysis that cannot be made in a conversation orsummed up in an argument. I know the facts; you didnot, at the time; assertions by me, though based on facts, would have seemed to you biased and unfair; the moreso because you, naturally, suspect me and my intentions- Thelemites are not better liked or trusted at presentthan the Gnostics and Essenes were in their day.

The purpose of this letter is to expound, in an orderlyand clear fashion, my conclusions, and to list the

works upon which my conclusions are based; so thatyou may, if you will, examine the works yourself, and reach your own conclusions, which ffiay, or not,

coincide with mine. I ask only that, once you have read

my letter and examined, if you will, the sources here

named, if you reach the conclusion that my letter and

the sources would make worthwhile reading for yourfellow Masons, transmit to them both the letter and the

sources, so that they, in their turn, may have a chance toexamine, to ponder, and to decide.

I must begin by repeating what I said at the time of ourtalk, and which shocked so much your honest devotion:the man called "Jesus Christ" in the Gospels is an

imaginary person; his adventures are fiction; he was

not, and could not have been the only Incarnation of the

Logos; and any church, any sects, and any people whosay otherwise either are deceiving or are deceived.

I do not mean by this that such a man could not have

existed; preached; and suffered. I do not mean to say

that such a man could not have been born. On the

contrary: Such men are born constantly, and they willcontinue to be born throughout the ages: Incarnationsof the Logos, Temples of the Holy Ghost, Crosses ofMatter crowned by the Rose of the Spirit.

I will say more: there was, once upon a time, amanwho reached in the highest grade the sense of his ownGodhead; and this man died in analogous circumstances, but not identical circumstances, to those nanated in the

Gospels; His binh is lost in the night of time; he was

the original of the Hanged Man, of the Sacrifice, ofthe Tarot; and the Egyptians knew him by the name ofOsiris. This man was the originator of the Formula ofthe Dying God.

This is the formula of the Death ofAsar in the Pyramid, which is retold in Masonic rites of the Hiram tradition, the most perfect of which is the Ancient and AcceptedScottish Rite.

The Grade 33o of this Rite means an Incarnation of theLogos; the Descent of the Holy Ghost; the manifestationin flesh of a Christ; the Presence of the Living God.

For the facts behind the above statement, I refer youto the following works by illustrious and deservingMasons:

LAMESSE ET SES MYSTERES, by Ragon.

THE ARCANE SCHOOLS, by John Yarker.

You might profit by reading also:

ISIS LTNVEILED, of Blavatsky, section on Christianity.

Mme. Blavatsky was not one of yours, but she was one9f Our.s... In my opinion, Dr. G., a high grade Mason, disposing of some leisure, would benefiihis brethren bytranslating the above works, specially the first two, intoPortuguese.

The documents included in the so-called NewTestament, Dr. G., that is to say, the Four Gospels, the Acts, the Letters and Revelations are forgeriesperpetrated by patriarchs of the Roman Chuich at thetime of Constantine, called "the Great" because heallowed and helped this deceit. Constantine never hada-ny dream of "In hoc signo vinces". Such legends areshameless lies invented by the Roman patriaichs of thenext three centuries, during which all historical recordsof the beginning of the so-balled "Christiafl era" werecompletely altered.

What really happened at the time of Constantine was

,* 11

Page 14: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYthat the bishops of Rome and Alex andria, of commonaccord, went privately to the Emperor and pointed outto him that the Roman religion was followed only bya minority of patrician; that almost the totality of thepopulation of the Empire was Christian, belongingto one of numerous sects and congregations of theprovinces; that the Empire was disintegrating due tothe discrepancy between the faith of the people and thefaith of the patricians; that the continuous uprisingsof the warrior Essene sects of Palestine incited theprovinces against the authority of Rome; and that, inshort, Constantine's only chance of keeping his Empirewas to accept the Roman Alexandrinian version ofChristianity, in which case the bishops would advise thepeople to cooperate with him, In exchange Constantinewas to help the bishops destroy the influence of all otherChristian sects!

Constantine accepted this political pact proposed bythe bishops of Rome and Alexandria. He made theirversion of Christianity the official religion of theEmpire. Consequently, religious leadership passed intothe hands of the church fathers, who, helped by theEmperor's army, began a "purge" much along the linesof modern Russia. The heads of independent Christiansects were imprisoned, their temples interdicted, whole congregations were sacrificed in the arenasof the provinces and of Rome andAlexandria. TheGreek Gnostics, heirs of the Mysteries of E1eusis, wereaccused of infamous practices by castrated fathers likeOrigen and Irinreus (castration was a quaint method ofkeeping chastity which Roman Alexandrinians tookfrom the Cult of Attys, from which Romish psychologyoriginated). The Essenes were doomed by the trick ofmaking the Jews the villains of the Passion-Play of theGospels; and with the final dispersion of the warriorJewish tribes to the four corners of the Empire, theRoman- Alexandrine Church secured its position, andwas able to dedicate itself completely to what has beenits speciality ever since: helping the tyrants of the worldto keep enslaved all true men.

OUTLINES ON THE ORIGIN OF DOGMA, of Harnack.

DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, of Gibbon.

THEAGE OF CONSTANTINE THE GREAI, of Burckhardt.

As to the historical forgeries of the Church of Rome,I refer you to the words of the great Americanscholar Moses Hadas in his notes to his translation ofBurckhardt's work, page 367:

"The Historia Augusta presents biographies ofEmperors, Crsars, and usurpers from Hadrian toNumerian (1 17 - 284), with an intemrption for theperiod 244-253.It purports to be the work of sixauthors -,tElius Spartianus, Vulcacius Gallicanus,,tEliusLampridius, Julius Capitolinus, Trebellius Pollio, andFlavius Vopiscus - and to have been written betweenthe reigns of Diocletian and Constantine, or about 330.Some scholars accept this as true, but others hold thatthe work was written by a single hand almost a centurylater; in which case the names of the six authors wereadded authority."

I paraphrased the above from memory; Mr. Hadas'swork is, however, easily available. In bolder words, what he says means this: The Roman patriarchs, anxiousto conceal their crimes, specially their persecution ofChristians belonging to other sects or churches, andanxious to declare themselves the only true Christians, destroyed all authentic documents they could lay theirhands on (this was particularly easy to them, since fromConstantine on they were the keepers of the records),and replaced them by forgeries representing them asoppressed by the emperors. In reality, they fawned uponthose emperors from their very inception - the Cult ofAttys was the only one in Rome to which patricianswere allowed to go by law.

A little later, Romans and Alexandrinians quarreled, because each faction wanted to make its ciiy thereligious and political center of the Empire; and it wasthen that one of the few paganhistorians who escapedattention of the Church Fathers wrote down that "theatrocities of the Christians against each other surpassthe fury of wild beasts against man." (AmmianusMarcellinus)

s13

Page 16: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRY

The final issue of the quarrel was the division of theEmpire in Roman andByzantine. Ever since, the RomanChurch has called itself "Catholic", while theByzantinehas called itself "Orthodox".

Both churches, of course, are a pack of lies...

What was the need, you may well ask, for this pitilesspersecution of Gnostic and Essene sects?

As to the Essenes, the reasons were political anddogmatic. About one century before they so-called YearOn-e there was born in Palestine a master whose nameis unknown (though some scholars presume it wasIonas, or Jonas). This master created a new system ofEssenism, founded many branches of this Jewish-Copticfraternity, and gained a great following in Asia Minor. Many documents were written about incidents of his lifeand doctrine. He was a Christian Adept, that is to say,he upheld the thesis that every human being is a templeof the Living God; he gave witness of the Logos andthe Holy Ghbst, and his impact on the religious thoughtof the times was such that the Roman-Alexandrinepatriarchs, writing their "history of Jesus C1rrist",.wereibrced to include him to avoid suspicions. The calledhim "John the Baptist"....

About this Essene Master, I advise you to read:

THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS, AN INTRODUCTION, by R.K. Harrison.

This book, also, should be translated into Portuguese bya Mason!

Below, I quote a passage attributed to this Initiate, takgnfrom a Coptic manuscr-ipt called "The Gospel-o-f Yary",which has been in the B-erlin Museum since 1896. Afterhaving spoken to them about many points of doctrine,he is saying good-bye to his PuPils:

"... When the Blessed One had finished saying this, hegreeted them all saying:'Peace be with-you.Receive mypeace for yourselves. Beware lest any dryry you-awaywittr the words, "Look here!" or, 'oBehold there!"; for

14*

Lrrrrn ro A BRASTLTAN MasoNthe Son of Man is within you. Follow him; those whoseek him shall find !im. Go, therefore, and proclaim theGood News of the Kingdom. I have not giv^en you anyrule save that I commanded you to do (L-ove oneanother),.and I gave_you no iaw, as did'the Lawgiver(Moses), because I did not want you to feel obHlated byit.'

"And having said this, he went away.,,

This passage may be compared with several in the$.!fpe_19.where "Jesgs", when asked, says explicitly:o'The Kingdom of God is within you.,,

And what motive had the Romans and Alexandrinians topersecute and slander the Greek Gnostics?

In this case the reason was dogmatic, only. About thetime attributed later by the patriarchs to tire "birth ofJesus Christ", a Greek Initiate gave new life to theMysteries ofApollo and Diony-sysm re-established thec.ult of the Spiritual Sun and the Logos, performedthaumaturgic wonders and, in shofiImade such animpression that the Roman Alexandrinians were forcedto include several "miracles" in their evangelicalpotpourri so that their "Jesus" might equafthe prodigiesattributed to$no]loq.of Tyula. At the same tinie, thJyproclaimed thatApollon liad been sent byo.Satan,,to"apethe "miracles of Jesus", drawing people iway from the"try. Christ"; and they destroye-d'systematicillv allauthentic documents of the 1ife ofApollon, leaving onlythe fantastic and unbelievable Vita, ittributed to a"pupil" of that greatAdept.

Agqi! _I

"In the beginning was the Word. And the Word was withGod, and the Word was God.

o'It was in the beginning with God.

"All things were created by it, and without it nothingwas created.

"Life was in it, and life was the light of men.

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesnot conceal it.

o'There was a man sent by God, whose name was Jonas(Johannes in Greek).

ooHe came to give witness of the light, so that all mightbelieve through him.

"He was not the light, but came to give witness of it.

"To wit, the true light, which coming into the worldenlightens allmen.

"It was in the world, the world was created through it,but the world knew it not (the Roman Alexandrinianshere replaced "it" - referring to the Word, or Light - by"him", meaning, of course, their imaginarypersonifi cation, "Jesus").

"It came to that which belonged to it, but that whichbelonged to it did not receive it (again the canonicversion has "him" for'oit").

o'But, to all who received it, it gave the power of beingmade children of God (and here the bowdlerizersintercalated: "to wit, they who believe in his name" -that is, in the "Jesus" they invented to serve theirpurposes), who are not born of the blood, nor^of the willbf the flesh, nor of the will of man, but from God.

"And the Word made itself flesh, and abode within us(here againthe Roman Alexandrinian version has':abode-among us" instead of "within us", a deliberate

mistranslation that changes the entire meaning of thepassage),.fu11 o-fgrqge ,and truth; and we saw fts glory, agIory as that of the Father's First Born (the Father's FirstBorn is of course Chokhmah, the Spiritual Word, thefirst emanation of the Ancient of Days, Kether; the FirstBorn brings also to mind the "eldesf of the Sons ofGod", Lucifer or Satan!)...

In the above, original version of this Christiandocument, and in the interpolations introduced by theRoman Alexand{nians, Dr. G., you have the summaryof, and basis of, Roman dogma.

Jon, Apollon, Simon (Simon Peter and "Simon theMagician"; we will touch on this later), all threeChristian Adepts, taught, all three: You are the Templeof the Living God. Behold the Light within you, andknow that you are Children of the Light!

Agaiq and again you find this message in the Gospels;but always twisted or conditioned or explained away byRoman Alexandrinian interpolations and theologisms.

-

The result is that sometimes "Jesus" speaks as a saint, asa true Incarnation of the Word; more often speaks as afanatic and a sectarian. Contradictions of this type pileon one another.

This is the result of the editing and interpolation of theRoman Alexandrinians. They copied, adapting to theirtemporal needs, Essene documents describing thepreaching of Jonas (among others, the Sermon on theMount). They inserted "miracles" of the type that hadbeen attributed to Apollon of Tyana. They arranged adramatic Mystery of the Passion on the molds of thecults of Mithras, Adonis, Attys, Dionysus, Oannes - athing necessary to make of their "Jesus" incarnation ofthe Logos of the ,Eon of Osiris - the Dying God. Theymixed truth and lies so carefully that during almostseventeen hundred years every Christian who sought theWord in himself - the only place where it can be found -met, on the threshold of his own soul, with this insidiousphantom, this blasphemous chimrera, this theologicalnightmare: "Our Lord Jesus Christ".

"Worship me!" cries the Egregora. "I am the son ofGod; you are nothing but a worthless and sinful

*t7

Page 20: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYcreature, damned from birth and destined to hell were itnot for my sacrifice; and without me you will neverreach heaven!"

Maybe you begin to understand, Dr. G., the abysmalnature of that which we call the Great Sorcery?

After sixteen hundred years of vitalization by multitudesof worshippers, and the absorption of the empty shellsof priests, nuns, friars and fanatics who allowedthemselves to be vampirizedby it, the Egregora doesexist in the so-called "astral plane"; and it is a demonthat is to say, an illusory entity, It is not a trueMicrocosm, but a gestalt of vitahzed shells, a focus foreverything that is negative, defeatist, maudlin, bigoted, introverted in human nature - a morass completelyhostile to progress and to the spiritual evolution ofmankind.

And yet, there is nothing holier or purer than that whichis hidden in this name "Jesus Christ" ... The name is acomposite of the titles by which the Qabalist Essenesand the Greek Gnostics respectively called the Initiatewho reached the Sphere of Tiphereth, the Son - that is tosay, the "sphere" or "plane" of consciousness that in OurSystem coffesponds to the Grade ofAdeptus Minor, andin the Scottish Rite corresponds to the 33 degree.

Christ, Christos, means the "Good" and the "Anointed".This was a kingly title in the Mysteries of Eleusis. TheInitiate has always been a priest-king since antiquity; theabsurd superstition of the "divine right" of kings wasanother adulteration by the Roman Alexandrinians, tohelp the tyrants who helped them. It would indeed beeasy if true royalty, the painful reward of Initiation, could be transmitted by dynastic methods, or conferredby a pope! In order to do justice to this theme, we wouldhave to write a fuIl volume; we can only say that thetraditional symbols of royalty are the symbols of the fullInitiation. The Scepter represents the Phallus, thematerial image of the Word; the Globe and Cross is aform of the Crux Ansata, the symbol of the immortalitywhich Initiation confers (it shows the Female"dominatgd" !y the Male , that is, fulfilled by theMale...); the Crown is Kether, the Sahashari Cakkram infull bloom, the First Sephirah, the Ancient of Days, the

18,*

Page 21: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Lrrr@soNFather; the purple cloak embroidered with stars offlowers represents the Night Sky, the Aura of the Priestof Nuit; finally, the crimson and gold robes are thesymbol of the Solar Body, the Body of Glory of theInitiate - red and gold are the heraldic colors of theSun...

As to the name 'oJesus", in Hebrew it is written IHShVH(pronounced Jeheshuah). Please note that this is IHVH,Tetragrammaton, with Shin (Sh) in the midst. Shin is theletter representing at the same time the elements of Fireand Spirit, and in the center of IHVH it equilibrates theFour Blind Elemental Forces of the Demiurgus. Jehovah- the Word of Moses - becomes Jeheshuah - the Word ofJon. In this Word you have the Crucified God, Dr. G.; init you have the Pentagram, the Sign of Man, theFlaming Star of the Sanctnary; the Cross unfolded intothe Five Elements: Fire, Water, Air, Earth and Spirit;here you have the Qabalistic key of the ChristianTetragrammaton, INRI, which means among otherthings, Igne Natura Renovatur Integra, that is: By theFire (of the Holy Ghost) Nature is CompletelyRenewed...

The basic difference between Christianity and thereligions which preceded it was that the Mystery ofOsiris, until then revealed only to carefully chosenaspirants in the deepest recesses of the most remotesanctuaries, was openly given to the world. Beforethe,tEon of Osiris, during the ^lEon of Isis, menworshipped God, in one of Its multiple images adaptedto the spiritual vision of different individuals anddifferent nations, in the same way a child loves andworships its mother: as Someone who protects, feeds, gives comfort, occasionally corrects or punishes; butalways Someone external to themselves.

It was the revelation of the Mystery of the Death ofOsiris which awakened men to the consciousness thatthey, themselves, are the divinity incarnate. We can't godeeply into this subject of Osiris, for it would givemotive to another volume. The Aon of Virgo-Pisces,with its vibrations adapted to the ideas of devotion andself- sacrifice, made Racial Initiation possible on a largescale; but it is necessary thatyou should understand, Dr.G., that the Mystery of Osiris dates from the highestantiquity. The Dying God is a magical formula that

,ff 19

Page 22: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYcomes from before the destruction ofAtlantis, when thetrue meaning of the symbols, until then generallyknown, became the privilege of very few initiates. Ayearly human sacrifice, to help the harvest, was ageneral rite among all the agricultural tribes of Europeand Asia Minor five thousand years ago; and even at thebeginning of Romanism was still carried out by Indo-European tribes. The sacrificed man was originally, theking of the tribe; he reigned during the year and wasslain in the Rites of Spring, or Easter (Easter is acomrption of Ishtar). He was treated as an incarnation ofthe tribal god, and worshipped until the moment of hisdeath. With his blood the seeded fields were sprinkled;his flesh was eaten by the nobles and the priests. Thecommon people had to satis$r themselves with breathingthe smoke of certain parts which were burnt in anoffering to the divinity he had incarnated (these partsvaried; some burned the sexual organs; others the heart).

Eventually, as intelligence developed, the formulabecame more convenient to kings; some tribal geniusconceived the idea of avicar, and since then a substitute, anointed king, symbolically for the occasion, was slaininstead of the true king. First they used volunteers, thenold men and sick men, finally enemies, and at lastanimals.

In many tribes, parents would sacrifice their firstbornsinstead of sacrificing themselves (the parents in suchcases were the chiefs, or patriarchs, of the tribes). Thestory of Abraham's first born in the Bible is an ingeniousfable which marks the transition among the early Jewsfrom the sacriflce of firstborns to Jehovah to the sacrificeof escape-goats.

Human sacrifices, accompanied by ritual anthropophagy, were custom in the Indo -European continent, inAustralia, in the African continent, and in the NewWorld. The universal presence of such arite, at a timewhen the science of navigation was practically nil, indicates a common source in antiquity. This commonsource was Atlantis, but you must keep in mind that theAtlanteans did not practice human sacrifices. It wasprecisely the destruction of their civllization (due not to"divine punishment", but to the natural movements ofthe earth's crust) that, leaving only a few colonies in

other lands, resulted in the reversion to barbarism ofmost such lands, when the symbols began to beinterpreted in the grossest manner.

Certain more advanced centers ofAtlantean culture keptthe true meaning. Among those few, we may point toEgypt, where the Minor Mysteries (the Mysteries of Isisand Osiris) were celebrated with full knowledge of theirtrue meaning (it is enough if you remember that in theBook of The Dead the soul of the dead man or woman isalways called Osiris), and the Greater Mysteries (ofNuit-Hadit-Hoor) were preserved with the greatestsecrecy.

It was from Egypt that came the Current of Osiris, which, due to the diversity of peoples and languages, and to the difficulties of communication on the materialplane, was reflected in different points of the Indo-Furopean continent in different forms, but alwaysfollowing the basic formula of the Slain God. Thecurrent began approximately in 500 BC. An ecstaticfrom Asia Minor, whose adventures became folklore, and who eventually came to be known under the nameDionysus, travelled through Greece, Asia Minor andIndia, teaching the new formula of Racial Initiation. This Initiate, who is the true original of the evangelicalo'Jesus Christ", was a spiritual son of Krishna, or ratherof Vishnu, of whom Krishna was the main avatar; andhis Word was INRI, which is a modification ofdevelopment of the Word of Krishna, AUM. We mayquote here Chapter 71 of LIBERALEPH, one of thedeepest works of the Master THERION:

"Krishna hath names and forms innumerable, and Iknow not his true human Birth. For his Formula is of thepaj_or Antiquity. But His Word hath spread into manylands, and we know it to-day as INRI-with the secretIAO concealed therein. And the meaning of this Word isthe Way of Working of Nature in Her Changes; that is, itis the Formula of the Magick whereby all T-hingsreproduce and recreate themselves. Yet this Ext-ensionand Specializationwas rather the Word of Dionysus; forthe true Word of Krishna was AUM, importing iather astatement of the Truth of Nature than a practicalInstruction in detailed Operations of Magick. But

*21

Page 24: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYDionysus, by the Word INRI, laid the Foundations of allScience, as we say Science today in a particular sense, that is, of causing external Nature to change in Harmonywith our Wills."

This Initiate, whose carnal name is unknown today, andwhom We know under the name of Dionysus (whichmay have been his carnal name, by the way; it becamecommon enough in Asia and Greece after he passedthrough!...), lived and worked approximately fivehundred years before the so-caIled "Christian" era. Perhaps you will be able to understand better what wentabove if I quote here some verses from one of the HolyBooks of Thelema:

There are certain initiatic secrets, Dr. G., that cannot be"communicated" for the simple reason that only thosewhose experience them in th-emselves will be able tounderstand references to them. I will therefore limitmyself to say that the simple-story told above in-Isaiah's,rot.t describes the caree? of every Christian Adept. That would, in theory be also the story of every Mason33 degree.; but in prictice, though yoy !1ve -not

The Roman Alexandrine patriarchs who wrote the NewTestament copied the words of true Initiates;_as a result, within their ahulterated Gospels there are still scattered

is God's." Invariably, whenever in the history ofmankind a system of theurgy is merchandizddinto anorga.nizedreligion,_the link between the system and itstpiritual source suffer. The planes cannotbe mixed, andthe Roman Alexandrinians, believing themselves movedby the best intentions, were in reality impelled by prideand vanity - feelings rooted in the sense bf ego --precisely that faculty of man that must be deltroyed inthe Crossing of the Abyss!

The result was that the Roman Alexandrine Church, losing touch with the Logos of the ,Eonof Osiris, became the instrument of demonic forces - that is, ofillusory forces, egoic forces - and gave itself from thenon to astounding errors, to unspeakable cruelties.

Consequently, the true Christians withdrew from thatchurch at the very moment ryhen it triumphed, allyingitself to the princes of evil of this world, bver its Gnoiticand Essene "rivals". They withdrew, and continued theirwork silently through all the ensuing abuse andgersecution; and eventually, to counter more efficientlythe effects of the Great Sorcery, they created Masonry.

Y_ou know, of course, that the Ancient Rite, or rather, theGreat T,odge of England, was organized, andthe entireRite reformed, by a certain Elias Ashmole, a Jew, whowas a Brother of the R.C. The R.C. (which exists withthis name in the world only since the great initiate whoconcealed himself under the name of .ChristianRosenkre'ttz" beganhis movement which resulted firstin the Renaissance, then in the reformation, and finallyin the American and French Revolutions) is responsibie&t tlt Mystery of the Logos - the Mystery of the Christ. It is their task that this Mystery be never l-ost bymankind. Whenever by men's error, by the oscillationsof human karma, of by the laws of chance, thetransmission of the Word and the Sign, that is, theapostolic succession, is threatened, il is the R.C., undergng 9f it-s many veils (it never uses openly that name ofR.C. !), through one or more of its Br-ethr6n, whoreminds mankind of the spiritual meaning ofIncarnation; of the Covenant of Resurreciion; of theGreirt Work, that is: the Establishment of the Kingdomof God upon the earth.

Who is "St. John the Baptist"? It is Jonas, Ionas, Jon,

Johannes, John, the Master of Righteousness of.theEssenes, whose serrnons in the Gbspels are put in the

Who is "Jesus"? It is any Adept, that is, any individualwho reached the Knowli:dge and conversation of the

Who is "Jesus Christ"? It is the name given by the

Roman Alexandrinians to their fictional version of the

Logos of the ,B,on of Osiris, whose Word was INRI, and

whom We know as DionYsus.

Who is the'oFather" to whom "Jesus" always refershimself in the Gospels? It is the Logos, the LVX, the

Lrrr@soNsymbolism, to the Essene Jeheshua; but in practice thename is used to designate the LOGOS AIONOS.From the mystical point of view, "no one reaches theFather except through the Son"; consequently, sinceevery Christian Adept is an Incarnation of the Word, distinction of the Solar Christ from the Inner Christ ismerely an illusion of the profane. Ego sum qui sum, says the Initiate - AHIH, I AM THAT I AM.

When the late Aleister Crowley was being 'Judged" (itwas then that the presiding magistrate called him "thewickedest man in the world"), the prosecutor asked him:

"Is it not true that you call yourself the Great Beast ofRevelations?"

Crowley, who was accustomed to expect the worst fromhis fellowmen, answered with the patience and witwhich were natural to him:

"This name only means The Sun. You may call me 'littlesunshine'."

That is: call me Adept, that is, Jeheshua, that is, Mason33o, Dr. G.... "little sunshine" : Minor Sun, Tiphereth.

This confusion between the Adept and his Fatherappears even in "John the Baptist" - that picturesquetour-de-force by which the Roman Alexandriniansseparated Jon, the Essene Master, from his sermons.Effectively, "John the Baptist" says: "I am the Voice(that is, Word) that shouts in the Desert (that is, in theAbyss)".

The most ancient symbol known for the Word is the Eyeof the Egyptians; and the Eye is in theAbyss. This is theEye in the Triangle, and this is the true Baphomet, theSecret Chief of all Masons.

Below the Abyss, he is represented by two Adepts, onein the White Pillar, another in the Black Pillar. TheWhite Adept is the Adeptus Exemptus, and hepromulgates the Law. The Black Adept is the AdeptusMajor, and he enforces the promulgations of the ExemptAdept.

Tnac@oNRYThe Jews , after they stopped sacrificing firstborns, hadtwo escape goats for their festivals, one white, the otherblack. The white goat was sacrificed to IAO (the oldestname of Jehovah); the black goat, charged with thecurses of the priests, was driven into tG desert...

Dg.yoy understand now better, perhaps, why the Roomof the Masons is called the Rooh of fhe Black Goat, Dr.G.?

lhe Eye in thgAbyss is the Eye of the Sun, the Eye ofHoor, which for certain reasons is identified withlheanus. That is why it is said, of "Satan's" worshippers, that they "kissed the anus of a black goat" ... In AncientFgypt, rn a certain ritual where each part of the Initiate'sbody ry.as pul in relation with each corresponding part ofsome divine being, the Initiate said at a given moment:"My buttocks are the buttocks of the Eye of Hoor."

But who the devil - pardon the pun - is in truth thisnotorious Satan whom Roman priests accuse us ofworshipplng, and whom they biame for their upsets, instead of blaming their own bigoted stupidity?

When the Roman Church began the "catechization" ofthe provinces, it continually found local gods. Learningthe legendary feats of such gods, the cunning Romanmissionaries would invent a "saint" with the same feats, and would tell the unsophisticated heathens:

"This god of yours-is nothing but a demon who is tryingto draw you away from Our Lord Jesus Christ, and iothis end apes the exploits of our holy martyr John Doe.4ld i{you don't believe me, listen io the itory of thelife of our holy martyr..."

And there followed the shaggy-dog tale.

In this wdy, the Roman Church assimilated into itsliturgy a whole pantheon of "heathen" gods, turningthem into completely imaginary saints and martyrs; thegnly Christian martyrs of early Christianity weri: theGnostics and the Essenes, whom the RomanAlexandrinians denounced to the Emperors. Examples:Those who worshipped the Christ under the shapebf anass (Priapus); those who worshipped the Christ underthe shape of a fish (Oannes); thos-e who worshipped the28 ,S

Christ under His Name Iacchus, or Dionysus...

But there was a heathen god whom the Roman Churchwas unable to swallow, because his exploits were toovirile to be attributed to a Roman "saint", necess artly acastrate, either in body or in spirit. On the other hand, his rites were so vital, so universally popular in theprovinces, that it was impossible to eipect that thepeople would forget him; after six centuries of RomanAlexandrinian tyranny he was still known and adored:the god PAN, the god with the horns and goat's hooves...

Therefore, not being able to make him a saint, Dr. G.,they made him the devil...

A profusion of data on everything that was writtenabove will be found in the following books:

THE GOD OF THE WITCHES, by Margaret Murray.

THE BOOK OF THE DEAD, translated by Sir Wallis Budge.

THE GOLDEN BouGH, of to r1i;J:azer, the complete edition in several

In this last monumental work you will find a detailedstudy of the pagan gods which were turned into'osaints"and"martyrs" of the Roman calendar...

But going back to the god Pan: The Roman Churchfought the rites of this god during several centuries. Thefestivals of Pan were oigiastic - fience their popularity- and were celebrated at the Equinoxes and fhe Solstites.Eventually, t_h. Roman Church was forced to incorporatethese festivals in its liturgy, having found it impossibleto eliminate them; and very sagely made of thern themost important festivals of the cult to "Our Lord JesusChrist": Easter, Christmas, St. John the Baptist's Day,and St. Jon theApostle's Day.Eventually, ihe Gregorianreform shifted_"Christmas", which at thd beginningwas a moveable as Easter and fell on the Solstice; andhaving at last absorbed the orgiastic ritual that tookplace then(remnants of such orgiastic aspects are, forinstance, "kissing under the misiletoe". Ii was more thankissing in the olcl days!...), the Roman priests fixed the

s29

Page 32: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYdate as the 25th of December. Since then the Romans, their later derivates, and several spurious occult orderscelebrate on that date the "resurrection" or the "birth" ofthe Sun; this because the Winter Solstice is the momentwhen the Sun, having reached the maximum of itsSouthern declination in the ecliptic, begins its returnNorth, taking the warmth which will renew the life ofvegetation in Spring.

But who was, from the Initiatic point of view, this Pan?

He was, as any and every god of any and every landof any and every period of the world's history one ofthe forms under which either the Spiritual Sun, who isthe true Father, or his First-Born, who is the "Beast",are worshipped... This Beast varies according to theprecession of the Equinoxes, because the Equinox ofSpring moves, due to the dislocation of the vernal point, from sign to sign of the Zodrac approximately everytwenty-five hundred years; and in the Zodiac, signs arealways alternately represented under human and bestialform.

In the late.tEon, the vernal points fell respectivelyin Virgo and Pisces, the Virgin and the Fish; in thepreceding ,Eon, the fell in Aries and Libra, the Lamband the Justice (the woman with sword and scalesof the old Romans); at present, the vernal pointsfall in Aquarius, that is, the Woman with the Cup(BABALON), and in Leo, that is, the Great Wild Beast(THERTON).

The god Pan is merely a hoary formula of the Logos, dating from the,iEon of Cancer-Capricorn..... Here isthe bogey- man of the Roman priests reduced to its trueproportions. Reduced?... Well, it is a matter of point ofvlew...

We can't go deeply into this question of the "HornedOne", nof into the whole symbolism of horns, nor intothe full story of the struggle of the Roman Churchagainst the Cult of the "Devil"; a Cult which, let us sayin passing, despite all its efforts Rome was never ableto destroy. Youwill find the fundamental data for ltudyin a precious book, published for the first time in theXVIIIIh century if I am not mistaken, but recently re-issued in the United States:

TWO ESSAYS ON THE WORSHIP OF PRIAPUS, by payne Ituight.

We will here limit ourselves to say that this was the godworshipped by the "witches", who preserved hisorgiastic rites in spite of all the diabolical persecutions, absurd calumnies, and dreadful risk of dealh by fire andtgrtglg iry.rposea !y the Roman Church not only duringthe.Middle Ages but even during the XVIIIth 6entury--and which, were it not for the patient and silent work ofthe Masons , true Christians, that infamous churchwould certainly impose to this day...

After Romans and Alexandrinians established theirtheological domination in the Concilium of Nicea (wewill talk of that later), and instituted the dogma of .:Jesus

Christ" as a historical character and as the 'zone andonly" Incarnation of the Word, the few Gnostics andEssene initiate who survived the "purge" continued, under the utmost secrecy, the original and pure traditionof the Minor Mysteries of Egypt and of the Formula ofDionysus

Several times, during the last fifteen hundred years, oneor ano.ther group of those Initiates attempted to re-establish 9pen1, their cult. Whenever they did this, theRoman Church intervened with insane fury slaughteringmen, women and children, to the point tha1, as was the -case with the Albigenses, even medieval captains, menmade brutish by the violence of the savage battles of thetimes, became disturbed by the massacre-and went toask the Pope whether, maybe, they were not killinginnocent people-along with the guilty (the Albigensesdied so virtuously, you understand). And it was on thisoccasion that the Bishop of Rome honored the"Christian" tradition of his church with these memorablewords:

"Kill them all; God will know his own."

The slaughter, Dr. G., included even newborn babies...

And it wasn't, Qr, G., as if the Bishop of Rome werevictim of blind faith in the crass theoiogy of his creed; itwas not as if he truly believed in the exlitence of a"savior" called "Jesus", and believed that the Albigenseswere "Satan's creatures". No, Dr. G., there was noi even

Church of Rome more humane, closei to God and HisLogos?

Very well; I have before me, at this moment while Iwrite, a Roman primer entitled "Christian Doctrine,,. Itis issued by the Pauline Editions, and has the number 1:it is destined, therefore, to the indoctrination of thetenderest babes. You told me that in your opinion theRoman Church was a good introduciion to adult life forchildren. Since you think so, kindly consider thefollowing purrug.r that I rfrrfl transcribe from thisinfamous booklet (the parentheses are mine):

I like my catechism (unconscious auto-suggestion).

The catechism teaches me the way to heaven (on theother side, he11).

Tlg way to heaven is: to know God (through the mouth9f th9 priests) to love God (according to the definition oflove.by men who vow to avoid all healthymanifestations of it), and to obey God (who orders youthrough his mouthpieces the pri6sts, is bnly legitimateintermediaries; all others are servants of the Devil, andif you try to defirle, ygu yourself, obedience to God, youare guilty of pride, a deadly sin).I will always go to my catechism lesson in order to 1earntfe yay to heaven (the veiled threat being that, if youdon't go to yor11 catechism lesson to learn the way toheaven, you will end up in hell).

I_wi1l always study my catechism very carefully (andthere are people who say that the Communists inventedbrainwashing!).

The above is merely the introduction. These notable"truths" follow:

Jesus died on the cross to save us (a historical lie; butthe dogmatic implication is that, since we are from birth

*33

Page 36: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYcreatures damned and destined at least to purgatory wereit not for "Jesus", children need salvation. What adistance between this and "Come to me the littleChildren"!...)

Little children love Our Lady very much (if this were a

Russian primer, and instead of o'Qrt Lady" this read'Nina Kruschev", wo would call it an outrage againsthumanity. And yet, at least Nina Kruschev exists!...)

Our Lady is the mother of Jesus (trye, BABALON is the

mother of ttre Adept; but that isn't how they interpretit!...)

Further down, the Creed, with this note: The creed is the

summary of the religion that Jesus taught us.

This is a shameless lie, for neither Jon nor Dionysus, the

originals of the evangelical "Jesus Christ", taught"..Tigiors". Buddha dla not teach Buddhism, nor didMohimmed teach Islam, nor did Lao Zr teach Daoism,or any other great spiritual guide ever establish a

formilistic dogma, with the-sole exception of Moses;and he, at least, had the excuse that he must qeate aculture where none was, to make a nation from a mob ofsuperstitious and rebellious slaves. It is alwaytl!.foilowers - and let us add in passing, the false followers- of the Magi who organize ieligions, and miss the Spiritfor the lettei, sooner or later behaving in a waycompletely opposite to that advised by the Instructor.

However, in the present case the lie is compound; forbesides the fact that Jon did not leave any "religion" tobe followed, the Creed of Nicea, which is the creed towhich this primer refers, was not even a summary of thereligion that was beginning to crystallrze alo.und.Jon'steaJhings. This creed was iather a codex of the dogmasthe Rorian Alexandrinians considered essential to theestablishment of their political, matetial, temporaldomination over the many congregations - churches -which had been founded in Asia Minor and in theRoman peninsula by followers and disciples of Jon, .eactrwith vaiiations of doctrine and temperament determinedby local conditions and by the idiosyncrasies.of thef6unding pupil. These founding pupils were the originalsof the ooapostles" of the "Acts" (the "Acts" are an

anthology, carefully censored and deturpated by theintroduction of highly imagtnary incidents and names,of the activities of some of Jon's pupils. Falsehood ofthe most glaring character is there mixed with shreds ofhistorical fact. The purpose of the falsification of therecords was to affirm the authority of the RomanChurch, the which, far from being the oldest of theChristian churches, was the newest - and certainly theleast Christian of them all! An interesting example is"St. Peter", "Simon Peter", who is the same "Simon theMagician" that opposes him in the Acts. He was aGnostic whom the Roman Church had to claim asfounder because he preached in Rome and wasuniversally respected by all congregations; but at thesame time had to attack be cause of the doctrines he heldin common with the Greek Gnostics and the Essenes."Peter" and "Paul" ate quite possibly the same person -but only future research by unbiased investigators inpossession of true documentation will establish this. Therecord of the manner in which the RomanAlexandrinians forced the Concilium of Nicea to votethis Creed into usage is a morass of horror. The situationwas such that visiting patriarchs did not dare to walk thestreets of Nicea, Rome orAlexandria without at least adozen bodyguards, for fear of being murdered by orderof the Roman Alexandrine patriarchs. (See OUTLINESON THE ORIGIN OF DOGMA and DECLINE ANDFALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE; also LA MESSE ETSES MYSTERIES, for a full discussion of this.)

But let us examine this o'summary of the religion thatJesus taught";

I believe in God the FatherAlmighty, Creator of heavenand earth (it already begins askew, for the "Father" towhom Jon referred in his sermons was Dionysus, theLogos of the ,Eon, who was Jon's spiritual father. The"Creator of heaven and earth" were in truth "Creators" -a plural quantity. Genesis, a Qabalistic work, is alwaysbadly translated; the "Elohim", creators of heaven andearth, were literally "male-female gods" - that is, anandrogynous divine host. Now please take note of the following:

Once upon a time, some angels sinned (funher on theyexplain what sin is).

The wicked angels are called devils.

The wicked angels went to hell (they must have a hell, you understand. Think how wretched were thosechildren, who never knew there is a hell until they metwith the Church of Rome!).

Why did God create us? (petitio principii - as usual.)

God created us to know Him (in the Roman version), tolove Him and serve Him in this world @arents breedchildren because they need slaves - no superhumanbeing could have another incentive...), and afterwards togo and be with Him in heaven (every nice dog deservesa reward).

Let us convene: the Roman version of the Creator showsvery little creative imagination!

But the folly goes on:

Adam and Eve were happy in Paradise.

However, one day they committed sin.

What is sin?

Sin is a willful disobedience against the law of God orTHE LAW OF THE CHURCH (emphasis is mine. Please notice that the cunning gentlemen are doublysecure. First, because they themselves wrote the "law ofGod"; second because th6y themselves write the law ofthe church!...).

Jesus died on the cross to save us from sin (they nolonger know what is Jesus, and they never knew whatthe cross is).

God rewards the good and punishes the wicked.

Heaven and hellw[L NEVER END (the emphasis ismine).

Not only does God have no imagination, he also has nomercy, to say nothing of a sense of humor!...

This "God" is a demon - made in the image of thosewho preach him!

Who goes to heaven?

Everybody who dies without serious sin goes to heaven.

Please notice that it isn't necessary to be virtuous, gay, courageous, fair, honorable, to go to heaven. Thepositive virtues have no meaning for..Christian,,children a la Rome; it is enough-to die without "seriouss^i1" to g9_1o heaven. !.ead up, Or. G., in RevelatiotrS,

"Quantum nobis prodest hac fabula Christi!"

But unfortunately for them, Dr. G., it so happens that theChrist is not a fable!

And the Word became flesh, and abode within us.

Thou who art I, beyond all I am,

Who hast no nature, and no name,

Who art, when all but thou are gone,

Thou, centre and secret ofthe Sun,

Thou, hidden spring of all things knownAnd unknown, Thou aloof, alone,

Brooding and breeding, source and seed

Of life, love, liberty and light,Thou, beyond speech and beyond sight,

Thee I invoke, my faint fresh fireKindling as mine intents aspire.

Thee I invoke, abiding one,

Thee, centre and secret ofthe Sun,

And that most holy mysteryOf which the vehicle am I.

Appear, most awful and most mild,As it is lawful, in thy child!

The above verses, Dr. G., were written by AleisterCrowley, the "wickedest man in the world" accordingto the Jesuit priests who organizedthe defamatorycampaign that followed him his whole life through. They can and should be sung with pride by every Childof the Light - that is to say, by every human being, byevery Child of God!

Do you still think, Dr. G., that the Church of Rome frdy,by responsible and honorable men, be allowed to be incharge of the education of children?...

Dr. G., as long as that church fails to admit publiclyits crimes against God and man; as long as it doesnot give up for ever this threat of hell and this dogmaof sih with which the negative forces that oppose theevolution of mankind try to stop men and women frombecoming God through the sexual act (see the Gospel of

"Then I will tell them very clearly: I never knew you.Away from me, ye who piactice iniquity.,,

"Matthew", VII, vv. 1 5-23.

Frankly,_ Dr. G., I do not understand how a Mason, howa sensible flln, how an honorable man can, for onemoment, defend an institution which is a taint in thehistory of mankind. But it is not that we fear it; it disgustsus. It is useless to proclaim the wonderful effedt thatRomanism has had on western civilization. The truth is

+41

Page 44: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYprecisely the opposite. Rome has. fought all reform andill progiess at every step, accepting tlem only at thelasf minute, and then pretending - to the unwary - that itinvented them. The renewal of the arts, of the sciences,of human freedom, never came from Rome; it camefrom the Masons, from the Arabs, from the Jews, fromthe Pagan heritage uncovered in the Renaissance, fromthe German, French and English Protestants, from theinvasions of the Norman pirates, even from the hordesof the Tartars and the Turks; never from Rome.

Consider the evidence of history Dr. G.! During a

thousand years the feudal system, mlde odious preciselyby the abuses due to the alliance of the church with the

f6udal lords, oppressed the population of Europe. Thencame the Reformation - and with in a century the systemhad practically vanished. Roman Catholic England was

apeity little iiland lost in the map of Europe;.there cameH^enry VIII, expelled the Jesuits,

_

c_reate-d Anglicjrnism- andin two geherations England had defeated RomanCatholic Spain, had become the greatest naval powerin the worl,C, and was on the way to build an empiremiehtier than the C&sar's. France decayed under theRoinan Catholic Valois; there came Henri IV, protectedthe Huguenots, was murdered because of it; but withina centnry the France of Louis XIV would dazzle theworld. Protestants colonized North America; comparethe advance of civilization in North America withCentral and South America, colonrzed by Jesuit priests!

The countries in the world where, at present, Romishdogma prevails, are from fifty years to a centurydelayed in material progress;and mora1ly, in certainareas, they are fromfive hundred to a thousand yearsin arrears. Protestant countries are much better off.But unfortunately, even the Protestants are not free ofthe taint of "original sin" and the guilt complex, norfrom the belief in the necessity of "salvation", usingas they do the evangelical ootexts" fabricated by theRoman Alexandrinians; and it was not for nothingthatAmbrose Bierce, by many considered one of the greatestAmerican Initiates, wrote as part of the definition of theword "Christian" in his realistic and priceless Devil'sDictionary:

42*

Page 45: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Lrrrln ro A Bnasrlraru MasoN"I dreamed I stood upon a hill, and lo!

The godly multitudes walked to and froBeneath, in Sabbath garments fitly clad,

With pious mien, appropriately sad,While all the church bells made a solemn din -

A fire-alarm to those who lived in sin. Then I saw gazing thoughtfully below,With tranquil face, upon that holy showA tall, spare figure in a robe of white,

Whose eyes diffused a melancholy light.'God keep you, stranger,'I exclaimed. 'You are

No doubt (your habit shows it) from afar; And yet I entertain the hope that you,

Like these good people, are a Christian too.'He raised his eyes and with a look so sternIt made me with a thousand blushes burn

Replied - his manner with disdain was spiced:'What! I a Christian? No, indeed! I'm Christ."'

If you would like to read amagnificent psychologicalstudy of Romanism, Dr. G., read The Antichrist ofNietzsche, and where ever you find written the word*Christian" replace it mentally by "Roman Catholic".You will have the Church of Rome exactly as it is.

Let us sum up, in parting, the contents of this letter, Dr.G.

A11 men are children of God. All men arc capable ofrealizingupon earth the Kingdom of Heavei, which iswith in us. We are all members of the Body of God, weare all Temples of the Holy Ghost, and it ii enough tocleanse the Temple - which does not mean to casirateoneself physicafiy or psychologically! - for the Presenceto manifest Itself.

There is no "Jesus, only son of God" to be worshipped;and any people who support such a possibility are-eitherdeceiving or deceived.

It is written in the "Gospels": Ye shall know truth, andtruth shall make ye free.

And it is also written, in the holy originals, blasphemedand betrayed by the Roman Aleiandiinians, thai Jonlooked smilingly upon the multitude, and opening hisarns cried:

s43

A Bibliographical Note to 'ol,etter to a Brazilian Mason" byMarcelo Ramos Motta

Disclaimer: This document appears in the "History of the O.T.O.After Crowley's Death". It wai provided to Frater Abai Vovin III"HOOR, in Portuguese, by a Brasilian Thelemite claiming it to bean unpublished addendum to "Letter". This addendum was thentranslated by Monica D. Rocha (Soror Walkiria) at his request, andhas since been distributed as such online.

Bibliographical NoteThis letter was originally written on July 9,1963 e.v,

addressed to an Osirian mason, Doctor Luiz GastSo da Costa deSouza, who had a practice in the city of Petr6polis, Rio de Janeirostate. It has been said to us subsequently by another Osirian masonand former aspirant, Euclydes Lacerda de Almeida, that Dr. Gastdocarefully saved the letter, but refrained from showing it to othermasons.

After April lst, 1964 e.v.., this letter was copied by carbonby its author and randomly distributed in the streets of Rio de Janeiroto whomever the author felt like giving them to. Its second versionwas significantly expanded in its bibliographical and historicalsections. The present document represents the third and hopefully, final version. The original letter ended with the following saying:

. Gast6o, thts ts one of the gravest moments tn

Truth. The communists incarnate one of the aspects ofthese forces; organized religions from the past ,Eonincarnate another. At the present moment, few are the

men who keep in contact with the spiritual planes.

Nevertheless I raise my voice in prophecy and tellyou:

This is the darkness of the Passage of the Aons.

In the new .lBon, the goats will organrze the Church.

Freemasonry is the key to the Temple of God.

I told you when we got together: if the Brasilianmasons would try to honestly purge freemasonry ofthe malignant forces which try to infiltrate within it;if they once again awaken to the spiritual battle andto the civic battle, they shall have all the necessary

support. The Eye is still in the Triangle. BUT IF YOUMAKE PACTS WITH THE DEVIL, THE EYE WILLCLOSE UPON YOU.

"It is not possible to be a mason and roman catholic.

It is not possible to be a Marxist and to be a mason.

It is not possible to be a mason without beingchristian.

Donot thank the Church of Rome for the concessions it"makes" to you. Oh Fratri, as men we are all brothers, these "concessions" you have already conquered;don't you hear the groaning of pain? Don't you see

the ocean of blood, don't you perceive the legion ofmasonic martyrs, don't you yet feel light of the fire? The Church of Rome never made concessions of atheological nature, except for economic and politicalmotives. Instead, it always allied itself with the tyrantsagainst the oppressed ones, and it will ally itself withthe Marxists, if necessary to battle you. But be faithfulto the Eye and the Eye will serve you.

"A1l human progress, all humanity; all protection ofthe pure science; all religious tolerance that exists intoday's world was a result of the work of the masons!

Never forget this! You should not thank an occultenemy for something he never did, but that you have

conquered through the sacrifice of many and throughthe patient work of unaccountable others.

"I repeat: be worthy of the Eye, or the Eye will close

upon you."

The lst ofApril, 1964 e.v. would have not occurredif the masons would have followed the conditionsof this prophecy. Instead of doing so, the Brasilianfreemasonry took the following backward steps duringthe years following this letter:

l.Divided itself into two antagonistic directions.

2.A11owed the publication in newspapers of photos ofthe interior of its Lodges, including those taken during

You place a treatise on tensor carculusin the hands of an elementary school student and lethim read the book at his own avail; it would proveto be worthless. "Esotericism" is a farce: the truesecrets CANNOT BE revealed for the simple reasonthat without living them it is impossible to understandthem, even if they are explained in the most simpleand candid manner.

Given the inaction and the lack of inertia of themasons, the prophecy of the letter accomplished itselfand continues to be accomplished. As a result, theBrasilian freemasonry is only alive now in the O.T.O.and in the Order of Thelema. We do not recognize anymasonic movement of the Old,iEon.

To the good listener, a half word is sufficient; to thebad listener, a million speeches will have no effect.

(attributed to Jesus Christ)

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

To be a citizen of a capitalistic society means to be the

bossman or bosslady of all those who are paid for their work withtax money. This includes all types of public servants - soldiers,

policemen and any public officials. It includes from the humblest

street-sweeper to the President of the republic.Your attitude, therefore, towards all those people (as long as they are

performing the services for which they were hired) must be of a chieftowards his or her subordinates.

It is wrong to kowtow to the President of the republic as ifhe were a symbol of public authority: it is the President who must

respect you. When performing his functions, he is your employee.

The army is your employee. It was collectively contracted to

uphold your security, not to undermine it.

The police are your employees. They are paid to defend your

privacy and your peace of mind, not to disturb either.

Any public official is your employee. He or she is being paid

with your money to serve scrupulously and attentively the interests

ofyou. To understand this fact, and to behave accordingly, is

essential to the good functioning of a true capitalistic democracy.

Don't think it will be easy to behave thus. Because of the

psychological conditioning of the slave religions, the attitude ofall those employees of yours towards you tends to be exactly the

opposite.By adopting a Thelemic attitude, that is, the attitude of a

citizen of a free country you will provoke the hatred and the spite

Tur lprurc Por-rrrcal Monalrrvof the bad soldiers, bad policemen, bad public officials and badpresidents. Nevertheless, you must persist. Do not become angry orimpatient; but insist, calmly and firmly, in your rights. The Order willhelp you in all planes in which you have consciousness and volition.

Consider that bad soldiers and bad policemen are

consequences, not causes. Also bad presidents. Every nation alwayshas the government it deserves. Tendencies towards dishonesty anddisorder will invariably appear whenever the laws by which a societyrules itself are bad.

When is a law bad? First, when it runs counter somefundamental aspect of human nature; second, when it is impossibleto enforce.

Please notice that Liber OZ declares fully the basic rights ofany human being. Any law, of any nation, that offends one of thosebasic rights is a harmful and sickly state. Attempts to enforce suchlaws invariably result in comrption of the enforcers and oppressionof the citizens.

The Master Therion said once that free men, faced by anunjust law, have only two alternatives: insurrection or emigration. There is, however, a third alternative: to change the law. The dangersof insurrection consist in that basic modifications in mass behaviormust occur slowly: it is necessary to impress section by section of thecollective mind. Revolutions are always followed by abuses and evenby madness.

One thing that every citizen of a free country must under-stand above all else is that he - or she - is the owner of the country.Presidents, public officials, security and lawenforcement organizations and any other "authorities" are not really

authorities at all. The authority, in their Aggregate, are the citizens,of which all those others are nothing but the servants - and frequentlybad servants.

The individual citizen is not obligated towards the country:it is the country that is obligated towards the cttizen. Therefore ifthe laws of the country offend the basic and legitimate rights of thecttizen, such as they are expressed in Liber OZ, it is the laws thatmust be changed, not the citizen who must be punished!

Each crtizen must consider himself or herself the guardianor tutor of the nation at all times. It is not the government of a free

s 51

Page 54: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYcountry that has the right to feel patemalistic towards the citizens: itis the citizens who have the right to feel patemalistic or maternalistictowards the government.

Ponder, for instance, the way the police often functions: itkills citizens, under the pretext that they are criminals. But while ithas not been proved, before a court of law constituted according tothe will of the citizens, that one among these citizens offended thebasic rights of the human being, as these are defined in Liber OZ,thus losing the basic right of enjoying those other ones, that citizenremains one of the owners of the nation, and a policeman who raises

his hand against him or her is guilty of insurrection. The average citizen has full right, if he or she so will, to

kill a thief or a murderer. But a policeman is not an average cttizen:because of his peculiar position as an employee of the citizenry he

must consider the life of any person as sacred as long as this personhas not been deprived of rights by a tribunal of fellow-citizens; and

should sacrifice his own life, if need be, to preserve the life even

of a suspect. In what concerns his fellow-citizens, the contractualobligations of a policeman or a soldier demand that he should die, ifnecessary1' and never kill.

The policeman or the soldier is doubly obligatedtowards a common citizen, no matter how poor or low in status: first

because a civilian is a fellow-citizen and second, because a civilianis a boss.

In the Thelemic concept of political morality, therefore, it isabsolutely needful that citizens stop letting themselves be impressedor intimidated by politicians, soldiers, public offrcials, policemenand such other frequently overpaid employees. It is not we who mustrespect those people. It is they who must respect us.

In what concerns the participation of citizens, with risk totheir bodily integrity, in activities decreed by governments -

for instance wars - it must be clearly understood that the commoncivilian has not the slightest obligation to let himself or herself diefor the "fatherland" - this archaic emotional hook through which allrulers have, throughout the centuries, taken advantage of the goodfaith and the good will of their bosses - that is, the "ruled". Blindoaths of fidelity to a flag, or to any community, arc immoral. Everyhuman being has, at any time, the right of decision over his or her

52.+.

Page 55: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

THrr-rrurrc Por-rrrcar- Mo r_rrv

most precious gift: his or her own life. A professional soldier mustfight, or sulrender his position if he dare not fight; but the commoncitizen is under no obligation to enlist unless he or she approves,of full consciousness, the acts of hostility his or her governmentproposes against other human beings. Nor has any government anyright to punish those citizens who refuse, either for moral reasonsor out of cowardice, to participate in awar.It is well that the draftshould reach all - how can any citrzenknow beforehand that he orshe would not be willing to fight for the country? Al1 citizens, thus, should become members of the reserve forces of their nation; butalways with the understanding that they will not be compelled by anygovernment to flght against their will.

For this very same reason, it is vital to stop anygovernmental bodies from falsifying national history in order topervert through propaganda the emotional balance of their currentbosses - the adult citizenry - and their future bosses, that is, thesons and daughters of the citizenry. The "fatherland" must neverbe presented as an abstraction, ethical or philosophical: it must berevealed as the socio-economic reality it actually is, its roots deepin an invariably disreputable past - were not all nations of the earthcome from the,lEon of osiris! we would think utmost folly onthe part of a patient undergoing analysis to try to deceive himselfor herself as to the origin of his or her inhibitions and complexes.Indeed, we know that the psychoanalyst's function is to stop aclient's self-deception as to his or her motivations. Nevertheless, it isstill customary toallow in the study of the "history of our country", that demagogues

and false scholars sweep the dirt of which we are made underneaththe carpet of our prejudices, like slovenly householders pretending toclean their premises!

How can we be certain of our true national aspirations ifwe lack an ample and objective view of our cultural roots, dark asthese may be? Are we ashamed of our past? This is the doom of anyhuman who aspires to progress and evolution, and it will not be byhiding from us our historical sores that demagogues will avoid theirrepetition.

we should therefore repeal, with the greatest indignation, any attempt at presenting to us the history of our nation .,expurgated',

s53

Page 56: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYof crimes, outrages and false ambitions: we must demand that ourchildren be allowed to learn the errors of their ancestors, and themotives behind these effors. As a sage well said, those who do notremember the mistakes of the past are condemned to repeat the samemistakes in the future.

Before closing this short tract we should mention the subjectof the punishment of crimes against the nation. When a citizen killsanother, this is a dealing between two individuals: it does not deservethe attention of the community except in terms of prophylaxis oreconomic compensation. To jail an

assassin is a double waste: the assassin has already subtracted acrtizen from the common effort; as if this were not enough, thecommunity subtracts another citizen from this effort, and pays for hisor her support with public money, thus putting an onus on all becauseof the mistake of one. Assassins should be made responsible for thedependents of those they subtracted from the social stream. Shouldthey prove incapable of handling the added burden, they should bekept under observation, but in activity; and should they repeat theirgesture, thus burdening common welfare even further, then theyshould be permanently eliminated, as disturbers of the public weal.

An assassin, as we have said, harms an individual, andonly indirectly harms the nation; but the public servant of whateverechelon who accepts bribes or subtracts money from the public tilldoes direct harm to the nation as a whole. A dishonest politician ora comrpt public official are much more harmful to the o'fatherland"

than an assassin, a thief or a robber who is a common citizen. Itis due to the venality of such dishonest employees that pollutionand inflation infest a country and - worse! - the attitude that thegovernment is the boss of the people, rather than its bonded servant, has been perpetuated throughout the centuries.

When a Persian king decided to invade ancient Greece,he commanded his engineers to build a bridge over the sea; thebridge fell at the first storm, and the king had the engineers publiclyexecuted. The bridge built by the next batch of engineers survivedthe crossing of his entire army. Those who remember the wise movesof the past are able to emulate those moves, both in the present andin the future.

Love is the law, love under will.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

"Politics" comes from polites, a Greek word whichmeant "cttizen", and which on its turn came from the Greek wordpolis, which meant "city". Therefore, the word "politics" means, etymologically, the science (or art) of life in organized societies.

All political systems of our times have one point ofagreement: all uphold individual sacrifice in favor of a group.Democracy, socialism, fascism, communism, are all based on thisconcept.

The Thelemic concept of politics is entirely different. Itis structured in the most recent discoveries of the socio-biologicalsciences: genetics, ecology and psychology. We could add"parapsychology", but this is a mere branch, very little developed asof yet, of psychology. These discoveries are so recent that they havenot yet been emotionally assimilated by the collective unconscious.

As a consequence, the Thelemic conception of politics ishard to understand. The author of these lines returned to his homecountry in 1961 e.v.. This country was originally colonized byRoman Catholics. For flfteen years he has experienced the hostilityand the boycott, not only of the extreme flght, but also of the extremeleft in his nation. curiously enough (or significantly enough), he hasbeen more actively attacked by the "moderates" on both sides: the"festive left" and the "liberals". The attack is mainly under the formof surreptitious slander, innuendo, and blacklisting. He has beenoften described as a "fascist" by the left or as an'oanarchist" by theright.

Let it be noted that such "moderates" usually belong tothe intelligentsia on both sides; intelligentsia being defined as

people who make a living by intellectual means. We do not hererefer to scientists or original thinkers, we refer to people who, notbeing gifted with sufficient creative originality to be great, becomeinterpreters and self-professed mouthpieces of more creative persons'theories or discoveries: critics, teachers, hack writers, priests, newspapefinen and politicians.

The overwhelming majority of mankind has no significantcontrol over the mental faculties, but in the case of creative geniuses

s57

Page 60: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRY

this is a secondary problem: such people use the intellect merely as

an instrument of the Will, and their dynamism is so great that theirintellect has no time to become confused or dispersive.

People with less creativity, but of active intellect, unless

they acquire control of their mental faculties never rise above the

mediocrity of pseudo-intelligence. They are conscious of theirmediocrity, and manipulate their intellect anxiously in order to

disguise it.The writer of these lines is not a creative thinker: he belongs

to the group he has just described. However, he has trained his

intellect to be an instrument of his Will, and has allied his Will to the

much more powerful and original Will of the Master THERION. He

did this because, having decided to dedicate his life to the service

of mankind, and recognizing his incapacity to contribute something

really new to the progress of his fellow beings, he began searching

for some such quality in the work of other men. He met with nothingthat could compare with the Book of the Law, and thus decided

to dedicate his life to the promulgation of the Law of Thelema. Ifreincarnation is a fact, he hopes, through the living experience

acquired in Service to the Law of Thelema, to become eventuallycapable to contribute, in another life, something as valuable as

THERION's work to the world. If reincarnation is not a fact, he

is sufficiently contented with the awareness that, allyrng himselfto THERION's Work, he has contributed much more to mankind'swelfare than if he had become a "socialist", or a'odemocrat", or had

remained a mere intellectual, pretending to erect his own system to

try to compensate his frustration at his inner awareness of his ownmediocrity, as Marx did.

The sole valuable contribution that Marx made to humanprogress was in calling attention to the need to include economic

factors in the study of the great historic movements. But inemphasizing these factors more than those implicit in the work ofDarwin and Mendel he erected a system of philosophy the only truepurpose of which was to console mediocre thinkers, and convincethem that they are as important to society as a great genius or acompetent craftsman.

Mam may have deluded himself into thinking that his workwould emancipate the masses. What he actually did was create a

SOME HARD TRUTHS THAT DISPLEASE THEINTELLIGENTSIA

The Thelemic concept of politics is based on certainscientiflc facts that demagogues avoid mentioning or deny:

First: The quotient of intelligence of any human being is a

function of genetic inheritance; it cannot be significantly augmented

by any means at present known.Second: The cultural conditioning of parents is not

genetically transmi s sible to their offspring.Third: The evolution of any species depends on the

apparition of succes sful variations.Fourth: Psychological projection is the commonest disorder

of the human mind.

HOW THE INTELLIGENTSIA INTERPRET THESE TRUTHSAND HOW THEYARE INTERPRETED BY SCIENTISTS

The fact that the human intelligence quotient is a functionof genetic inheritance means that the intellectual level of any person

cannot be raised by education or conditioning. From the pointof view of those who would have a "classless society" this is badnews. Statistical studiesl prove that the intelligence quotient variesinversely to the number of human beings. This means that the veryintelligent are always a minority. For instance, only one person in ahundred has an I.Q. Above 130 in the Stanford-Binet scale. To raise

the intelligence level of society in general it would be necessary

to control the reproduction of individtal citizens so as to make itimpossible for the less intelligent males to fertilize women; even"better", to stop low I.Q. people from reproducing at all.

Recent studies prove that certain individuals may have an

I.Q. increase of up to 20 points in the Stanford-Binet scale, even

when their genetic inheritance is statistically normal or inferior. These exceptional cases, however, were gravely undernourishedin childhood, or abnormally deprived from stimuli during their

s59

Page 62: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYdevelopment. For instance: a child who had been kept chained toa bedpost for years, on being freed and intellectually stimulatedrose fifteen points in the Stanford-Binet scale in one year of normalliving. But having reached its genetically normal limit, the child'sintellect rose no more.

Another detail: such dramatic rises in intellectual level arepossible only if the underdeveloped individuals are stimulated beforeadolescence. Once intellectual maturation has been completed in ahostile environment, it is impossible to stimulate the undernourishedor underfavored towards a rise in I.Q. by any means at presentknown.

These universally established facts are angrily deniedor stubbornly ignored by the intelligentsia, right or left. Theyare fought off to the point that those who mention them, or tryto divulge them, are accused of being'oreactionary" or "fascist"even in supposedly developed societies, such as the United StatesofAmerica. Yet, these facts are vitally important. From them, educators can draw these useful conclusions:

1. It is vital that children should be properly nourished frombirth to the end of adolescence2.They should receive abundant intellectual stimuli duringthat same period.3. It is useless to try to raise the I.Q. of anybody pastadolescence.

4. Since the I.Q. is a function of heredity, we should attributeless emphasis to purely intellectual aspects of the education ofpost-adolescents, and investigate less known personality traitssuch as emotional stability, creativity, and spirituality.5. Acrtizen's I.Q. Level is not a fair index of social worth.

This last point is very hard for intellectuals to understand, because they tend to "project". We will try to clari$z the problemwith a concrete example. Some years ago, we were writing scriptsfor Brasilian television. An intellectual of festive-left tendencies, probably a spy, put the following problem to us: He knew twobrothers, one a menial worker, the other a domestic servant in hishousehold. Being a marxist, this intellectual, who was financiallywell-off (the festive left always are!), sought to give the brothersa chance to improve their social status through study. The menial

60s

Page 63: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Or rnr Polrrrcar- PuRposgs

worker took advantage of this help, got a college degree and became

a member of a professional group. The servant, however, showedno interest at all in going to college. His boss, the intellectual, toldus that, although he scolded the boy continuously, and pointed theexample of his brother to him, he was unable to make him imitate the

brother's "success".We asked him: "Is he a good servant?""Excellent!""Does he tell you he's happy being your servant?"'oYes, but he shouldn't be!""Why not?" we replied. "You do him a great wrong when

you try to force him into a direction for which he is not qualified, instead of cherishing and respecting him for being what he is."

We remember to this day the glance of pure hatred thisintellectual gave us. He never spoke to us again, and through hisbrother, who worked for the same TV chain (then in organization)we did, he managed to make our position inside the business so

untenable that we were forced to resign. Years Latel when weproduced a full-length motion picture on a very modest budget, wewere accused, in a weekly trade magazine, of which the brotherwas an editor, of cheating our employees in pay. In point of fact, our efforts to pay everybody punctually lead us to bankruptcy, fromwhich only now we are beginning to recover. The film received sucha oowelcome" from the movie critics (a11 of them festive left) that ithas not paid for itself to this day.

In short, we were personally harmed and publicly slanderedmerely because this festive leftist believed that a "professional man"rs better than a domestic servant.

This kind of stupid prejudice is not patrimony of leftistintellectuals. The rightist intelligentsia exhibits the same delusionthat greater facility to store information in the intellect proves that a

human being is more important than another. The fact that an individual's cultural conditioning is not

transmissible to his or her offspring was so repugnant to Russiancommunists that in Stalin's time a Russian scientist was compelledto affirm the opposite. This scientist, Lysenko, until then universallyrespected by the international scientific community (which, howeverbureaucrats may dislike the fact, does not attach great significance

*6t

Page 64: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYto political or ideological differences), wrote a series of articles, andeven a book2, defending the concept that acquired characteristics aregenetically transmissible. He was rewarded by Stalin with well-paidhigh offices in Russia, but became completely discredited amongworld scientists.

We can understand that it may annoy pseudo-liberals that,no matter how well-educated or well-trained a human being may be,he or she will be unable to transmit his or her cultural background orsocial conditioning to his or her children: the children will have toundergo a similar training, and may not respond to it as well, or inthe same way as the parents. Taken together with the factor that theI.Q. level of anybody is predetermined at conception, this becomes

a crushing argument against the "classless society" that is the

socialist ideal. We cannot level down (or up!) "social inequalities"through educational processes at present known to us. To put the

thing in simpler, though perhaps brutal, terms people who were bornto be nickels shall never become dollar bills - unless by inflation. If by chance or design they are conditioned to speak or act as

genetically more complex strains, they will be unable to transmit thiscamouflage directly to their offspring, who will tend (statistically), tobe as nickel-prone as their genitors.

Should we join these two factors to the third - the fact thatthe evolution of any living species depends on variation from the

norn - we will perceive that the educational tendency of all modemsocieties, either left or right-oriented, is totally inefficient. More, even: it is dangerous. We are trying to uniform mankind down to asingle pattern, when we should be trying to stimulate diversity and

non-conformity in every field of endeavor. And we have chosen

as our yardstick precisely that faculty that science has proved tobe static, automatic, not to vary with sufficient frequency throughgenerations: intellectual level.

This intellectual conformity that we are trying to impose onour neighbors is, ultimately, a psychological projection on the part ofthe intelligentsia in all countries.

A man who tries to "save" his neighbors is, in reality, tryingto save himself. And when he defines "salvation" as an increase inintellectual capacity, he is unconsciously admitting his dissatisfactionwith his own intelligence. When he tries to level out all classes to

62*

Page 65: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

OE rur Polrrrcal Punposrs

his own status, he confesses to the world that he feels inadequate inhis social status. In trying to "lift up" his neighbors, he is trying tolift himself up.

At first sight, this seems a much "nobler" attitude than thatof the egotist who is merely interested in his own progress andcomfort, and to hell with other people. But the scientific fact is thatthe egotist is less harmful to human evolution than a man obsessedby the o'savior complex". Why is this? Simple: the egotist is tryingto establish a variation (himself) in the social norm. But the altruist,in projecting his own frustrations and desires on society in general,is trying to establish a pattern to which his neighbors should conform

- and this pattern, no matter how excellently utopic it may be, willalways result in an increase of restriction, consequently a diminutionin the number of variations, upon which any living species dependson in order to evolve.

From the racial point of view, it does not matter in the leastwhether marxism is a "nobler" ideal than fascism. What mattersis the both are attempts to restrict the progress of our species to apattern imposed by a minority of its members.

Doubtless, an active thinker will ponder here that this is stilla manifestation of the influence of variations (respectively, in thiscase, of Marx and Mussolini) over the norm of mankind.

But what we should do is to establish a societal attitudethat encourages the manifestation of any variations and, at the sametime, hinders those variations from restricting society against theindividual citizen's will. The political structure of any nation, inorder to be truly scientific (as far as we can, at present, understandthe facts of science), should be simultaneously fluid enough to allowthe spontaneous appearance of both communism and fascism (stillconsidering the above example), and rigid enough to stop adepts ofeither ideology from imposing their predilections on others throughbrute force, enforced dogmatism, or economic reprisals.

If there existed in the world at present a political and socialstructure satisfying the above conditions, that structure would bewhat we call (in our present stage of assimilation of the meaning ofLiber AL) a Thelemic structure.

The definition of our terms made us write this lengthy andsomewhat involved prologue. We shall henceforth speak in simpler

s63

Page 66: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYand more direct language.

OF SELFISHNESS IN POLITICS

The basis for thelemic political philosophy is intelligent

selfishness.

Cavemen did not begin to hunt in groups because they

thought group work was "nobler". They began to hunt in groups

because together they could kill bigger animals more easily. The

effort of each individual was smaller, and there was more meat for

all.Modern societies too often demand from the citizen more

effort than he or she would exert individually, and offer less returns

for the effort made.

When you protest, your Establishment (whether it be

otgantzed as a "democracy", a dictatorship, "socialism", ot

communism) replies, reminding you of your'omoral duties" ofhumility, patience and self-sacrifice. All governments are unanimous

in reminding you to think of what you can do for your country, and

not of what your country should be doing for you.

In a thelemic society, it is the Establishment that must be a

function of the individual cttizen. The citizen should continously ask

himself or herself whether he or she proflts for being a member ofsociety. If you gtve more than you receive to any community, your

society is not well-organized, and it should be modified. If it cannot

be modified, it should be destroyed, and a more efficient society

erected in its place.

Certain moralists assert that it is good to train human beings

in self-sacriflce. This conception dates from the,lEon of Osiris, and

it is so emotionally ingrained in the human psyche that even Marx

fell for it.The result of such training is always twofold: weak-willed

individuals (always the majority), when trained in self-denial,

become puppets of the strong-willed. These, trained in self-denial,

automatically become leaders in the name of the common welfare,

and unconsciously restrict and tyrannize the masses'

In the Middle Ages, people in the Christist countries lived

in the wretchedest conditions, while the clergy and the nobility lived

64*

Page 67: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Or rne Polrrrcal Punposps

in wealth and comfort under the pretext of consoling (the clergy)and protecting (the nobility) their vassals. These were exhorted toconform themselves to their painful circumstances, with the promisethat, the more they suffered here on earth, the more they would enjoythemselves later in "heaven".

In modern capitalistic societies the middle class, alwaysthe bridge between the rich and the poor, is becoming progressivelysmaller. The rich are decreasing in numbers and increasing in wealth(inflationed - it is debatable whether the increase is real). Thenumber of poor is increasing, but they are convinced that they belongto the middle class, and are surrounded with false comforts that helpkeep them psychologically enslaved to the elite, who manipulatethem through the bureaucratic machine.

In communistic societies the disparity between the rulingclass and the ruled is even greater than in capitalistic societies. Aconcrete example3: two percent of the population of the UnitedStates ofAmerica (four million people) control eighty percent ofthe country's wealth. In the u.s.s.R., the communist party countsapproximately twelve million members, of which only two millionhold positions of real authority in the bureaucracy. The totalpopulation is greater than three hundred million, and puts up withtheir vassal status under the promise that their great-grandchildrenwill live, right here on earth, in a heaven that is defined as o'Total

Communism".However, total communism is a scientific impossibility, not

only because of the four scientific discoveries previously quoted, but also because the chances of the genetic structure of any man orwoman being duplicated through natural sexual permutation are lessthan one in seventy-six trillion.

So that all human beings could have the same tastes, thesame talents, and the same needs (that is, so that they could all beequal and belong to only one social class), they would have to behomozygotes. And the chance of one homozygote appearing is ofless than one in seventy-six trillion.

The promise of "total communism" is, thus, just as empty asthe ecclesiastic promise of paradise.

In the two basic types of modern societies the attitude ofthe crtizens and the division in classes differs very little from what

*65

Page 68: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYexisted in the Middle Ages of Europe, when Christism wielded

power. A very small minority still controls the sources of wealth,

and the very large majority depends completely on this minority who

controls and maniPulates.

Perhaps now O.T.O. members will understand what

Thelemites mean when they speak of societies organized along Old

,Eonlines as slave societies. If a human being is unable to move at

will upon the earth (that is, if you lack only one of the rights claimed

for you in Liber OZ), this human being is a slave.

Well, in the capitalistic world, specially in countries like

Brasil, where this writer lives, a menial worker rarely has enough

money to travel from town to town. In the communist world a

crtizenmust have a special passport from the Party in order to move

from one town to another. Such passports ate rarcly granted, since

freedom of movement on the citizen's part implies a dimunition ofcontrol on the part of the government.

Both types of societies are kept stable by the patience of the

masses conditioned to the idea that the individual must sacrifice his

or her well-being to the general welfare.

We ask: what welfare? Which avetage proletarian is free to

see the world? To know his own country well? To eat what he or

she wants, dress as he or she wants, amuse himself or herself as he or

she wants? Or just to own his or her own hous e at a reasonable cost?

The average proletanan cannot even afford to pay for false

comforts (such as, for instance, a TV set) in cash.

The abuses that the silent majority suffer at the hands ofthe elite are due to the fact that we are conditioned to the ideas ofaltruism, abnegation and self-sacrifice. Our tyrants do nottyrannrze

us from malice. They are as stupid as we are. The process is

entirely mechanical. It is the "historical determinism" of a society

psychologically organized along the lines of the Old,lEon: the A,on

of Osiris, the ,!Eon of Self-Denial, the Aon of the Slave Gods.

We must teach each other that the only protection we have

against this stupid and blind servilism is a healthy and alert egoisma.

Let us help ourselves. As the collective unconscious

says through the voice of an old saw, "God helps those who help

themselves".

OF THE PRE SEN;;Hil?Til,?tT 3T ;IiX,T

OC IE TIE S

Karl Marx wrote an enornous volume merely to provethat capitalism invariably leads to communism. In what concerns

capitalism as this is practiced in so-called underdeveloped countries,he was absolutely right.

But Marx believed that communism is the perfection towardswhich capitalism is just a transitory phase. Thelemites hold thatcommunism is the final stage of decay of slave societies that practicecapitalism along Old,iEon lines.

Let us consider, for instance, the example of Brasil, wherethis writer lives. Periodically, the benevolent despotism of the"rightist" government decrees an increase in the minimum nationalsalary. Immediately afterwards, merchants raise their prices in exactproportion to the salary increase (sometimes much more), protestingdeficits. The result is that the increase in the minimum salary means

nothing. Prices rising, the buying power of the wage-earner remainsthe same - or goes down. What really happens is a progressive

devaluation of the national currency, creating the so-called "inflationspiral".

The minimum salary was established so it should be the

minimum amount any employer could pay his or her employees. Butbusinessmen define the minimum salary as "model salary". If theycould, this is the salary they would pay everybody but themselves.

Profits obtained with this policy of low salaries and highpricing, the businessmen apply in the expansion of their disruptiveactivities, or invest in enterprises larger than theirs, therefore even

more disruptive. They grow progressively richer in paper, but the

value of this "wealth" - the true value, the buying power- slowlybecomes inflated. The worth of one's money goes down. Peoplewho earn big wages feel the devaluation much less: if you earn fromten thousand dollars a month up, iL monthly devaluation of two orthree percent does not affect you much. You will still be earningabout seven thousand dollars a month at the end of the year.

But if you earn the minimum salary (which, in the richer

+67

Page 70: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnec@oNRYparts of Brasil, is now eighty dollars a month), you feel the

difference in your flesh. For a person who earns starvation-wages,a difference of two or three dollars a month represents less bread forone's children, or less fares to go to work.

Money which the businessmen invest in their inflation-making enterprises, or in enterprises bigger than theirs, thereforeeven more inflationary leads to the formation of enterprises so largethey become cartels. Individual initiative, the survival of smallbusinesses, becomes progressively harder. The giants of capitalsuck everything into themselves. The federal government starts

interfering in private business (either in an attempt to hinder the

thieves or help them). In either case, the federal government starts

growing in exact proportion in which the cartels, or the attempted

cartels, expand. Eventually, you have a tug-of-war in which the

average crtizen is the rope, and the government and big businesses

are the contestants. There are only two possible outcomes of this: the

govemment wins, absorbs the cartels, and becomes the sole nationalmonopoly. This is called "communism" or "socialism", dependingon the extent and depth of the absorption. Or the cartels win, and

the government becomes a mere representative of big business. Thisis called "democracy" or "socialism", depending on how the cartelshandle their public-relation departments.

In either case, the loser is the average crtizen, who is nowtreated as a servant of the govefirment, which calls itself alternativelythe "State" or the "Fatherland", depending on the degrees of sacrificeit is trying to extract from its dupes.

The present tendency of Brasilian society (and Brasilis merely one among hundreds of "developing" countries) is

towards socialism (leftist, or rightist. We remind our readers thatleftist socialism is even more overbearing and paternalistic than

the rightist). This tendency is encouraged and accelerated bymamists working in the government's bureaucracy or in the capitalmarket. There are two means by which a country can be led intocommunism: the best known (therefore the most watched for) is to

increase the abuse of the rich to such a degree that the poor rebel,

and put the marxists in power, with the results now evident in Russiaand China. The second means, slower but also safer, is to promote

the progressive interference of governmental bureaucracy in all

68S

Page 71: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

OE rup Polrucal Punposps

levels of society, and the progressive infiltration of marxists in the

higher levels of the bureaucracy. This is the formula through whichmarxists in underdeveloped countries will inevitably reach totalcontrol, if social-economic trends continue as they are everywhere inthe so-called "free world".

Should there be a reaction in favor of capitalism (that isto say, in favor of the cartels thatpractically control the economyof "developing" countries), the result will be exactly analogous, although it will probably be called by different names. Totalenslavement of the individual citizenby the State shall eventuallystifle and absorb even the super-rich. (The majority of internationalcartels are already functioning in a purely reflex pattern, and use

computers to help them along the way of the dinosaur.)This is a remarkable verification of Marx's theory of

historical determinism, with a sole (but important!) difference:neither total communism nor devouring capitalism, rather a triumphof the intelligentsia who will be the bureaucrats everywhere, since

only they are sufficiently humorless and mediocre to yearn for it.It is this total failure of individual freedom that the Law of

Thelema was proclaimed to avoid.

THELEMIC DEFINITION OF SOCIALAND POLITICALMORALITY

The social awareness of a healthy citizen should be nothingmore than an extension of the human instinct for self-preservation.The morality of a healthy citrzen should be the expression ofintelligent egoism.

A citizen should sacrifice for society only those rights heor she considers less valuable than other rights he or she expects toincrease by life in society. If you deprive yourself of any of yourrights and, as a result, notice a decrease in still other rights which are

more important to you, you have stopped being a crtizen. You havebecome a slave.

When (for instance) I pay taxes, it is because I expect thatthe society in which I live (myself included!) will beneflt by mypaying. I expect that the government (my servant, since in payingmy taxes I am paying its salary) will dedicate itself efficiently to my

,* 69

Page 72: Marcelo Motta Tracts on Aquarian Masonry

Tnac@oNRYservice.

If the government does not wish to work for me, it should

not ask me for money. I dislike beggars, and do not give alms.

Also, with relation to my "neighbor" - that is, another crtizen

- my feeling of human solidarity should be merely the expression ofmy personal convenience. He (or she) and I are two hunters after bigmeat. If he or she helps to increase my welfare, I shall cooperate in

increasing his or hers. But if he or she interferes actively with me Ihave a MORAL DUTY to react, and to kill him or her, if need be, toguarantee my freedom. "The slaves shall serve".

If the two hunters, hunting together, are not going to get

more meat with less effort, why hunt together?Thelemites, therefore, always expect from society more than

they contribute to it. Society must always pay back to the crtizen

MORE than he or she expends with it. Otherwise, why live insociety?

If a business venture shows no profit, a sensible businessman

liquidates his assets and tries something else. Any business venture

MUST be profitable; and life in society is essentially abusiness

venture.A society that does not PROVE to the citizen that it is more

profitable to belong to it than to be alone, or to be a member ofanother society, is a con game. It is a society that forces the crtizen

into the role of a person who gives more than he or she receives,

spends more than he or she earns, wastes his or her life withoutsufficient compensation, works without being paid a decent wage.

This is the basic definition of a slave.

A Thelemite, therefore, measures the society in which he

or she moves, at each moment,by the basic yardstick of his or her

personol convenience.

Do I exert less effort to do my will belonging to the society

than I would if I did not belong to it? Then the society deserves to be

called a Thelemic society.

Do I exert more effort to do my Will in the society than Iwould out of it? Then, the society is a slave society.

Thelemites maintain that social duty consists in the search

for increasing personal advantage, at the cost of decreasing effort, on

the part of EACH and EVERY citizen.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

The O.T.O., Ordo Templi Orientis, or Order of the Templeof the Orient (the name has a secret sense that is unveiled only toInitiates of the IIo), is at present internationally represented by theGreatly Honored Frater PARZIVAL XI", Supervisor General, whoseimmediate delegates in the profane world are the Directors of theSociety Ordo Templi Orientis. These exhibit, whenever this is re-quested of them, Contract Letters-Patent, duly notanzed.

The purposes of the O.T.O. are simple, and are succinctlydescribed in Liber OZ. Greater understanding of the need for thosepurposes, however, as well as greater efficiency in the struggle to es-tablish them, need application and study. Therefore, a Reading Cur-riculum has been established to fulfil the basic needs of candidates tothe Order.

The O.T.O. is intimately linked with the Holy GnosticCatholic Church, of which it may be considered a training ground;but the aims of the Order are not in themselves religious, but rathersocial. The vocation to belong to the Hierarchy of the Holy GnosticCatholic Church is not required of those who want to be admitted tothe O.T.O.. In truth, the Order accepts members of any religions, andpeople of any philosophical or political persuasion, as long as theseswear, on their honor as members of our species, to seek to refor-mulate their religious, philosophical or political dogmas so these beharmonious to the principles of Llber OZ.

READING CURRICULUM

Candidates to initiation in the O.T.O. must know at leastLiber OZ, and be in complete agreement with the Rights of theHuman Being therein declared. But they will do well to becomefamiliar with the reading curriculum of the Io even before they are

admitted to that Grade:

STRUCTURE OF THE O.T.O.

The Ordo Templi Orientis is organized in Lodges to whichmen and women of all races and social levels may belong. Any hu-

man being who can pass through the initiatic ordeals has the right tothe Io O.T.O.. The principal aim of those Lodges is to stimulate the

socety in which they exist, so it will establish and maintain the prin-

ciples of Liber OZ culturully, socially and politically. Parallel tot his, they aim at training vocations for the Holy Gnostic Catholic Church. The order considers that true religion and true civilizationgo handin hand, and sees no disparity between its spiritual and its worldlyambitions. The Lodges are under the responsibility of Lodge Mas-ters, who may also be of any race, sex, or social position, and whoare monitored by regional Directors.

Although we cannot, rn a Manifesto meant for the generalpublic, unveil the nature of the Work of the Grades, especially inthe Inner and Secret Circles, a brief description of the titles (whichindicate the main activity) of each of the Grades may be useful tointuitive temperaments. The O.T.O. is divided in Three Circles:

Outer Circle: includes from the Io to the III..Io: Attraction to the Solar System (Birth)II": Thelemic behavior on Earth (Life)III.: Lordship or Ladyship of Earth (Death)

Inner Circle: includes from the IVo to the VI' O.T.O.IVo: Freeman or Freewoman. Page or Damsel.Vo: Esquire (both sexes)VIo: Dame or Knight of the Grail

Secret Circle: includes from the VII. to the IXoVII.: Novice. Warrior (both sexes)VIII': Deacon or Deaconness. Herald or Inspecter

(both sexes).

IXo: Priest or Priestess. Judge (both sexes).Beyond these Grades, there are two more of a purely admin-

istrative nature: the Xo, to which belong the Kings or Queens, orNational Grand-Masters, and the outer Head of the order, or Inter-national Grand Master; and the XI". whose Authority is purely spiri-tual, and therefore is totally out of the normal structure of the Order.

In reality, there exist in the O.T.O. only three Grades: manof Earth, lover, and hermit. Men of Earth include from the I" to theIII.; lovers from the IVo to the Xo; members of the XI" are hermits.

At present, the O.T.O. does not have any member of the Xoin any country for motives that are explained directly only to LodgeMasters; and only one member of the XIo, the Greatly HonoredFrater PARZIVAL xlo, aBrazllian citizen, the Supervisor General. The Supervisor General communicated directly as such only with the

Director of the O.T.O..The O.T.O. monthly dues are five percent of the monthly

income of any member (this is in the Outer Circle). Contributionsare not monitored, but if by chance it becomes evident that some

member is deliberately contributing less than five percent of his orher monthly income, that person is immediately expelled and barred

from re-admission.Besides the monthly fee, members are encouraged to con-

tribute to the smooth working of the Lodge to which they belong,

either with toil or gifts. However, advancement in the Grades does

not depend from donations, or from the size of one's monthly fee:

it is guaged from the evidence of moral and intellectual dedication

to the principles of the Order. Advancement in the Grades of the

O.T.O. brings increase of responsibility, and thus demands strength

of character and purity of motivation. The keynote of the entire pro-

cess is Service. Both the Reading Curriculum and the rules established in

this Manifesto are subject to change by US at any time.

Love is the law, love under will.
