South Coast Casuals in Ladner Village is encour-aging their clients to scour their closets to help with a clothing drive on March 10 for disadvan-taged women entering the workforce.

Called the Tribal Spring Blossom Event, it will benefit Dress for Suc-cess Vancouver, which, according to its website promotes the economic independence of dis-advantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

Donations of gently worn women’s cloth-ing, purses and shoes that are suitable for job interviews and work environments are being sought.

"We really like the idea that this event will go towards empower-ing women and helping them move forward," said South Coast Casu-als' Jill McKnight, who

had a chance to tour the Dress of Success Van-couver facility last week and which includes a clothing side as well as a computer lab that offers free training courses in business-focused appli-cations.

"This is an organi-zation that has a lot of exposure in the Down-town Vancouver commu-nity, but as I am talking to people in the store here,

a lot them are unfamiliar with it but think it's agreat idea," she added.

Donors will receivea thank you gift fromSouth Coast Casuals andbe entered in a draw foa $200 Tribal Sportsweagift certificate with a private shopping experience.

First-time homebuyers to get some answers

Ladner yoga studio to support arthritis research

18th annual free seminar to help navigate the process of selecting a home

With so many diverse factors to take into consideration when buying a new home, particularly in the Vancouver region, it is no surprise first-time home buyers need a little help de-mystifying the process.

There are so many questions that need answers.

What home type is best matched to wants, needs and financial resources?

What location is preferable? What are the mor tgage

options?How does the provincial prop-

erty transfer tax exemption for first-time home buyers work?

What are the rules associated with B.C.’s newly announced $10,000 first-time new home buyers bonus? How much can be withdrawn tax-free from RRSPs? How about legal considerations, closing costs and home warran-ties?

What’s involved with condo pre-sales?

Those and other key ques-tions will be covered by a panel of experts at the 18th Annual Seminar for First-time Home Buyers, presented by the Great-er Vancouver Home Builders’

Association (GVHBA) on April 3 from 7-9 p.m. in the Bell Per-forming Arts Centre (6250 144 St., Surrey).

Admission to the popular seminar is free thanks to the gen-erosity of the presenting spon-sor, the provincial Homeowner Protection Office, branch of BC Housing; patron sponsor RBC Royal Bank; and corporate spon-sors Canada Mortgage & Hous-ing Corp., Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, Genworth Financial Canada, National Home Warranty, CKNW, 99.3 The Fox, AM730 and Classic Rock 101.

S p e a k e r s a r e R o b y n Adamache, senior market ana-lyst, Canada Mortgage & Hous-ing Corp.; Wendy Acheson, vice president and registrar, Homeowner Protection Office, branch of BC Housing; Nar-rinder Dhanoya-Bhangu, vice president, Pacific region, Gen-worth Financial Canada; Inde Sumal, vice-president of resi-dential mortgages, BC region, RBC Royal Bank; Eugen Klein, president, Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver; Tom Reeves, assistant vice-president, Nation-

al Home Warranty; and Aaron Lightman, associate, Farris & Company LLP. Seminar modera-tor is Shayne Ramsay, chief exec-utive officer of BC Housing.

“Our experts will help first-time buyers consider all avail-able options and important issues before they take that criti-cal first step onto the property ladder,” said GVHBA president and CEO Peter Simpson. “Real estate continues to be a hot topic in this region, so seminar attendance is expected to be as many or greater than the 750 young people who attended last year’s event.”

Doors open at 6 p.m., allow-ing attendees ample time to view builder displays and other home-related products and ser-vices.

Pre-registration is required. Register online at www.gvhba.org or call 778-565-4288 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Registrations will also be accepted via voicemail dur-ing evenings and weekends.

Although the seminar is free, attendees are asked to bring a food item for the Surrey Food Bank.

This Sunday (March 4), Open Space Yoga will be joining thousands of Canadians as they take part in Power of Movement, Canada's largest yoga fundraiser. Funds raised from this event go towards l ife-changing research, which benefits more than 4.6 million Canadians living with arthritis and autoimmune conditions.

Since its inception in 2005, Power of Movement has raised more than $1 million for critical arthritis research and engaged thousands of Canadians in a celebration of movement.

Millions are impacted by arthritis

and autoimmune conditions. One in five adults and 50 per cent of those over 65 years of age in the USA have been diagnosed with some form of autoimmune disease: arthritis, rheu-matoid arthritis, gout, lupus, fibromy-algia.

"The South Delta yoga community has been incredibly generous by spon-soring our team," said Jes Von Henze, Power of Movement ambassador and Open Space team leader. "Most of us know somebody in our life that suffers from arthritis and other forms of auto-immune conditions. We are so looking

forward to finishing off our campaign this Sunday with a very special yoga and music fundraising class for this important cause."

Open Space Yoga will be hosting an all-levels, by donation yoga class Sun-day afternoon. The class will feature Open Space Yoga instructors teach-ing to live music played by guitarists Alec Von Henzke, Mike Soloman and drummer Miguel Staunton.

The class will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Registration information can be found at www.openspaceyoga.com or by calling 778-858-9642.
