This introduction was a taste of what is to come later this year during 4 special seminars which will be sponsored by MPC at various meal program sites. Currently Chef Patti is working with Operation: Sack Lunch to educate the kitchen staff on balancing nutrition with taste, and is working on a curriculum which will be possibly shared with MPC members at a later time. Chef Patti is currently a nutritional consultant, and was a caterer for many years. During this brief presentation, Chef Patti introduced a study which was conducted regarding brain function of an 8 year old girl. In this study the young girl was asked to write a statement about a book that she had read. After a week of nutritionally balanced meals the handwriting was much more legible and showed that the young girl was able to write more fully about the question (please see attached handout). Chef Patti also discussed how spices can be used to supplement mental health, and physical health. Patti said that items such as cinnamon sticks in hot water act as a stimulant in the morning, and helps with liver function. (Please see attached handouts) In the coming months Chef Patti will be presenting seminars/workshops on how to balance healthy foods with taste. Please look for the dates, times, and locations to be announced.

Jean Squires Jean is with the City of Seattle Human Services Department and presented an outreach program called ldquoPeople Pointrdquo This outreach program is intended to help service providers link people in need with food stamps check systems removal child care assistance health care utility assistance and free tax preparation Jean was interested in meal programs who might be interested in this program and several responded that they would be Shayne sent out Jeanrsquos contact information on 31609 and if people are interested please respond directly to Jean It had been asked if brochures were available in different languages and include in the e-mail today the languages include Spanish Cambodian Chinese Mienh Tagalog and Vietnamese Several agencies who have benefited from People Point recommended the service You can find further information on People Point at httpwwwpeoplepointinfo SHSC Shayne discussed SHSC renewal with everyone and discussed the importance of supporting SHSC He then handed out the 2009 Fact Sheet and membership renewal for Seattle Human Services Coalition Shayne also announced the new ldquoCall to Caringrdquo being presented by SHSC This new initiative is intended to update the 2020 Vision initiative of 1999 The new initiative for SHSC members is to bring together different parties in the community who are concerned about how we take care of each other as a community Some key points of this initiative to explore are

bull Key systems that we all took for granted such as the financial system and their failure bull Community health and human services systems have always been underfunded and

emergency services like food banks and shelters are not the best way in the long run to make sure our communities are without hunger and that everyone has a home

bull People in the community are recognizing that the economic downturn is making it necessary to invent new ways of working together as communities

bull New leadership is making it possible to imagine that new ways will work bull Many different communities and groups are examining their focus areas in light of this new

urgency and possibility bull Finally SHSC wants everyone who has an interest a stake in how we take care of each other

as a community to collaborate and co-convene our communities to create these new ways together

SHSC and MPC would like invite everyone to participate in this new initiative All of us working together can make change in how we help each other As this initiative develops Shayne will keep MPC members informed will seek input from the coalition and has invited members to participate in this important work Also Shayne asked that meal providers please make time to attend the Seattle City Council Budget hearing on march 26th at 5pm If you can make it please arrive early around 330pm to line up The City Council has to make some difficult choices regarding funding and this could potentially mean reduced funding for meal programs MPC and human services in general Without Seattle funding MPC would find it difficult to survive It was suggested that Shayne look at the 2009 budget to find reductions that will not hurt human services Shayne said that he would look into it

Bonnie Baker Northwest Harvest Bonnie announced that the vendor who was going to donate service ware such as paper plates and utensils backed out of the donation due to the large amount of product needed Bonnie is currently following up with this vendor seeking a smaller donation to assist

with the transition over to paper from polystyrene products and will keep us informed of the outcome It was then suggested that NW Harvest go back to the vendor to check and see if MPC members could receive a discount on paper products through this vendor if a donation was out of the question Bonnie agreed and said that she would check into it Bonnie then announced that Lonnie has been appointed to manage the meal program section at the Kent warehouse and will be the new point person for meal providers at the NW Harvest distribution center As the new point person Lonnie asked that meal providers picking up donations arrive on time so that the process of picking food items is fair to all the programs participating in the program He stressed that when a provider arrives late to pick up donated food it slows down the process for the other participants The new contact list for meal programs was handed out and should be used in the order listed if a program needs to reach NW Harvest regarding available food items Food Info Line 206-923-7462 Anna or Lonnie 206-923-7445 Vicki Thompson 206-923-7450 Barbara Cerna 206-923-7451 Bonnie Baker 206-923-7440 Bonnie stated that it would be best to call for a list of available food after 5pm the day before your scheduled pick up Bonnie also suggested that now with Lonnie working on meal program food that NWH could revisit some of the suggestions made by agencies and might want to revisit the process for food pickup by meal programs South King County Food Bank Coalition has a truck available for food pickup and delivery Bonnie suggested that if an agency needs transportation for food agencies might want to come together to see if they would want to hire the truck from the SKCFBC Bonnie thought that the average fee would be around $50 per program If agencies are interested in sharing the cost of the vehicle and driver they should come together to see if an agreement could be reached with the SKCFBC Please contact Bonnie if you are interested and she will direct you to the appropriate person depending on the schedule you are requesting Fe Arreola Seattle HSD Fe didnrsquot have much to report except that all of the contracts for 2009 were completed Fe did urge MPC members to be involved in the upcoming budget hearings to state the needs of their programs and the importance of funding for equipment paper products and operating costs as funding becomes scarcer Food Lifeline Food Lifeline reminded MPC members that the FLL agency conference will be on March 23rd and thanked the agencies for participating in the order up program Paper products may be on the way for this program and Agency Relations will let us know when that occurs Member Announcements Michael Gregory with PNA saw an increase of 100 people at his meal on Wednesday 311 and believes that the increase was caused by Ballard Food Bankrsquos suspension of their hot meal program Michael will keep us informed if his numbers continue to rise

The many faces of BASIL More than just the sum of itrsquos lsquopestosrsquo o) basil boasts some very important health benefits and it wonrsquot be long to basil season Two tsp of this aromatic herb provides 60 of your RDA for Vitamin K which promotes blood clotting and helps the body absorb calcium which we all know is crucial in building and maintaining bone density Whatrsquos more basilrsquos essential oils inhibit the growth of bacteria making it a tasty way to keep infections at bay It is fairly easy to grow given that you keep it in the sun as much as possible and plant it near mums which will keep some of the pesky insects away Also try these simple ways to bring basil to your table Creamy tomato basil spread In a blender or food processor combine frac34 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes (drained) one 8-oz pkg of cream cheese 1 tsp minced garlic and frac12 cup fresh basil leaves Process until smooth and then blend in frac14 cup crumbled feta cheese Enjoy as a veggie dip sandwich spread or topping on French bread toasts with diced tomatoes or combine with pasta for a unique sauce Lemon sunflower pesto In a food processor combine 2 cups packed basil leaves 2 crushed garlic cloves frac12 cup shelled sunflower seeds frac14 cup olive oil 2 Tbsp lemon juice frac14 cup crushed red pepper (optional) and frac14 cup parmesan or romano (stronger flavor) cheese Add to pasta or spread on chicken or fish before baking Whole-grain basil bread In a small bowl dissolve a packet of yeast (1-14 oz) in one cup warm water and let stand In a food processor pulse one cup packed basil with 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 Tbsp honey and a tsp garlic powder Combine yeast and basil mixture with 3 cups whole wheat flour and 1 cup whole oats Knead in to dough and let rise about an hour Bake 30 to 35 minutes at 375 degrees (For a fabulous pizza crust eliminate the oats and reduce both the honey and the oil to 1 tsp) Orange Basil Sorbet In a large saucepan combine 2 cups fruit-only or all-natural orange marmalade 2 cups fresh orange juice and 3 cups water Bring to a boil and then reduce heat and simmer until smooth and syrupy When cool stir in frac14 cup finely chopped sweet basil Mix syrup in with a blender of ice until desired consistency Serve immediately (syrup can be made ahead of time and then blended at the last minute)

INGREDIENTS 50 skinless boneless chicken chopped breasts 12-12 large tomato chopped 6-14 cups mayonnaise 18-34 cups shredded Cheddar 6-14 cups Italian-style salad and Monterey cheese blend dressing 60 (10 inch) flour tortillas 12-12 heads iceberg lettuce 6-114 cups ranch-style salad 12-12 heads romaine lettuce dressing rinsed and dried 6-14 cups salsa 25 bunches green onions

DIRECTIONS I

1 In a gallon size plastiC bag or 9x9 baking dish mix together the mayonnaise and Italian dressing Place chicken in mixture and marinate overnight in the refrigerator I

2 Chop wash and dry the iceberg and romaine lettuce Mix and divide among four dinner-size plates Divide and place the tomato and green onions among the plates Sprinkle the top of each salad with shredded cheese

3 Remove chicken from marinade and grill or broil until cooked While chicken is cooking cut tortillas into three thick strips and cut each strip into matchsticks Place on a cookie sheet and put under broiler until golden brown Let cool Cut the chicken into strips and divide among plates Top with tortilla crispies

4 To prepare the dressing combine the salsa and ranch dreSSing in a blender and mix until smooth Pour over each salad

Jean Squires Jean is with the City of Seattle Human Services Department and presented an outreach program called ldquoPeople Pointrdquo This outreach program is intended to help service providers link people in need with food stamps check systems removal child care assistance health care utility assistance and free tax preparation Jean was interested in meal programs who might be interested in this program and several responded that they would be Shayne sent out Jeanrsquos contact information on 31609 and if people are interested please respond directly to Jean It had been asked if brochures were available in different languages and include in the e-mail today the languages include Spanish Cambodian Chinese Mienh Tagalog and Vietnamese Several agencies who have benefited from People Point recommended the service You can find further information on People Point at httpwwwpeoplepointinfo SHSC Shayne discussed SHSC renewal with everyone and discussed the importance of supporting SHSC He then handed out the 2009 Fact Sheet and membership renewal for Seattle Human Services Coalition Shayne also announced the new ldquoCall to Caringrdquo being presented by SHSC This new initiative is intended to update the 2020 Vision initiative of 1999 The new initiative for SHSC members is to bring together different parties in the community who are concerned about how we take care of each other as a community Some key points of this initiative to explore are

bull Key systems that we all took for granted such as the financial system and their failure bull Community health and human services systems have always been underfunded and

emergency services like food banks and shelters are not the best way in the long run to make sure our communities are without hunger and that everyone has a home

bull People in the community are recognizing that the economic downturn is making it necessary to invent new ways of working together as communities

bull New leadership is making it possible to imagine that new ways will work bull Many different communities and groups are examining their focus areas in light of this new

urgency and possibility bull Finally SHSC wants everyone who has an interest a stake in how we take care of each other

as a community to collaborate and co-convene our communities to create these new ways together

SHSC and MPC would like invite everyone to participate in this new initiative All of us working together can make change in how we help each other As this initiative develops Shayne will keep MPC members informed will seek input from the coalition and has invited members to participate in this important work Also Shayne asked that meal providers please make time to attend the Seattle City Council Budget hearing on march 26th at 5pm If you can make it please arrive early around 330pm to line up The City Council has to make some difficult choices regarding funding and this could potentially mean reduced funding for meal programs MPC and human services in general Without Seattle funding MPC would find it difficult to survive It was suggested that Shayne look at the 2009 budget to find reductions that will not hurt human services Shayne said that he would look into it

Bonnie Baker Northwest Harvest Bonnie announced that the vendor who was going to donate service ware such as paper plates and utensils backed out of the donation due to the large amount of product needed Bonnie is currently following up with this vendor seeking a smaller donation to assist

with the transition over to paper from polystyrene products and will keep us informed of the outcome It was then suggested that NW Harvest go back to the vendor to check and see if MPC members could receive a discount on paper products through this vendor if a donation was out of the question Bonnie agreed and said that she would check into it Bonnie then announced that Lonnie has been appointed to manage the meal program section at the Kent warehouse and will be the new point person for meal providers at the NW Harvest distribution center As the new point person Lonnie asked that meal providers picking up donations arrive on time so that the process of picking food items is fair to all the programs participating in the program He stressed that when a provider arrives late to pick up donated food it slows down the process for the other participants The new contact list for meal programs was handed out and should be used in the order listed if a program needs to reach NW Harvest regarding available food items Food Info Line 206-923-7462 Anna or Lonnie 206-923-7445 Vicki Thompson 206-923-7450 Barbara Cerna 206-923-7451 Bonnie Baker 206-923-7440 Bonnie stated that it would be best to call for a list of available food after 5pm the day before your scheduled pick up Bonnie also suggested that now with Lonnie working on meal program food that NWH could revisit some of the suggestions made by agencies and might want to revisit the process for food pickup by meal programs South King County Food Bank Coalition has a truck available for food pickup and delivery Bonnie suggested that if an agency needs transportation for food agencies might want to come together to see if they would want to hire the truck from the SKCFBC Bonnie thought that the average fee would be around $50 per program If agencies are interested in sharing the cost of the vehicle and driver they should come together to see if an agreement could be reached with the SKCFBC Please contact Bonnie if you are interested and she will direct you to the appropriate person depending on the schedule you are requesting Fe Arreola Seattle HSD Fe didnrsquot have much to report except that all of the contracts for 2009 were completed Fe did urge MPC members to be involved in the upcoming budget hearings to state the needs of their programs and the importance of funding for equipment paper products and operating costs as funding becomes scarcer Food Lifeline Food Lifeline reminded MPC members that the FLL agency conference will be on March 23rd and thanked the agencies for participating in the order up program Paper products may be on the way for this program and Agency Relations will let us know when that occurs Member Announcements Michael Gregory with PNA saw an increase of 100 people at his meal on Wednesday 311 and believes that the increase was caused by Ballard Food Bankrsquos suspension of their hot meal program Michael will keep us informed if his numbers continue to rise

1 In a gallon size plastiC bag or 9x9 baking dish mix together the mayonnaise and Italian dressing Place chicken in mixture and marinate overnight in the refrigerator I
