A Jesuit parish uniting hearts and minds in the Spirit of Jesus Christ

March 11, 2018

This weekend we hear another gospel story about someone coming to faith in Jesus. It is the story of The Man Born Blind in the ninth chapter of John’s gospel. This man is physically blind but spiritually sighted. The religious leaders, in this gospel story, are physically sighted but spiritually blind. As Ronald Rolheiser reminds us, “He (the Man Born Blind) comes to faith and commitment simply because he refuses to tell a

lie. Because the man refused to lie to the religious leaders, Jesus eventually found him. In this gospel story we also experience the motif of washing that leads to sight. This anticipates, for our Elect, baptism at the Easter Vigil. Through opposition and persecution, the blind man moves to increasingly deeper faith in Jesus. The blind man moves from confession of “the man Jesus,” to “prophet,” to “worshipper of God,” and finally to confession of Jesus as “the son of God.” This weekend we accompany and support the Elect as they scrutinize areas of contemporary blindness in their own faith lives and ask God for true light. Pope Francis, reflecting on this story, reminds us that “This man born blind and healed represents us, when we do not realize that Jesus is the light, when we look elsewhere, when we prefer to trust in the little lights, when we grope in the darkness. Indeed, the fact that the blind man did not have a name helps us to see our face and our name reflected in his story.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was frequently asked to simply wait, to allow the injustice of segregation to continue and be addressed at some other time. In his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, he responded to those religious leaders who encouraged him to follow a little light rather than the Light of the World who inspired his values, his behaviors, his whole life. In a speech he gave at Western Michigan University in 1963, five years before he was killed for honestly following the Light of the World, he said: There are certain things in our nation and our world which I am proud to be maladjusted and which I hope all men of good-will will be maladjusted until the good societies realize. I say very honestly that I never intend To become adjusted to segregation and discrimination. I never intend to become adjusted to religious bigotry. I never intend to adjust myself to economic conditions that will take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few. I never intend to adjust myself to the madness of militarism, to self-defeating effects of physical violence. Dr. King, like the Man Born Blind, could not and would not lie. But people did not want to look at what his honesty reflected. He came to deeper and deeper belief and commitment to The Way, the Truth, and the Life. Just as the Light of the World was crucified, so Dr. King would be slain by an assassin’s bullet. Honesty can be hazardous to one’s health. Let prospective disciples Beware!

With our Elect, on this Laetare Sunday (4th Sunday of Lent), let us pray in the words of Pastor J Birch. What have we to say of you, Jesus Christ, we whose eyes have been opened so that now we see, we whose ears have been opened so that now we hear? You are teacher, prophet, healer, friend of the friendless, hope of the oppressed, liberator. You are these but so much more, for you are the Love of God, filling hearts and souls wherever you should pass. You are the Word of God, bringing truth and wisdom to a world that’s lost. You are the Son of God, traveling the road that leads to the cruel cross. You are this world’s Savior and the reason we are gathered in this place.

Just Faith Coming Soon to St. Ignatius

About- JustFaith Ministries was birthed in the effort to invite and prepare people of faith for the life-changing and world-changing call of the Gospel to help heal the world and, in so doing, experience a deeper faith, a more fulfilling life, and a community of care and vitality. Jack Jezreel, Founder A Vast Community- Since 2001, over 50,000 people have

completed a JustFaith Ministries program. Together we envision a vast community of faithful people transformed by the spirit and leading lives of extraordinary compassion. Transformation-JustFaith Ministries programs create an environment that invites personal transformation. We change people – and those people change the world.

Concert of Haydn’s, “Stabat Mater” "The Cathedral Choir and Capella Antiqua join forces with soloists Robin Fisher, Valerie Loera, Salvatore Atti, and Daniel Yoder to provide a moving concert of one of Haydn’s most famous works. First performed in 1768, Haydn’s “Stabat Mater” explores the depths of human emotions, from despair and grief, to lasting joy. This work contains some of the composer’s most rich and deeply felt writing, with moving choruses and soaring solos. Come enjoy Haydn as he was meant to be heard, with period instruments and astounding voices, in the exquisite surroundings of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Friday, March 16th at 7:30 pm. Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, 1017 11th Street. $20 general, $10 student. http://www.capella-antiqua.org"
