RJ Ramsey: A Great Local Leader You Want Your Kids to KnowAfter a full day of desk sitting, hallway walking, lecture listening and of course socializing a young student might not be blamed for wanting to park themselves on a couch following a long day at school. While many tired students do just that, Richmond’s RJ Ramsey has another philosophy.

“Physical activity has always been so important in my life,” says the 17 year-old Richmond Secondary student. “Especially nowadays as a student, after countless hours of school and the work it brings, physical activity allows me to take a breather and get the exercise I need in my life.”

The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology recommends youth age 12-17 should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous-intensity physical activity daily.

Ramsey gets that and then some.

In addition to having played for his high school volleyball team from grade eight through twelve, Ramsey has been a part of the club Air Attack, the Richmond Olympic Oval’s Volleyball Centre of Excellence as well as being an Oval member.

“The way I found volleyball was from my participation and involvement in a number of sports throughout the community,” he explains. “After playing so many different sports you get a pretty good idea at which ones you really connect with.”

He suggests others, who haven’t yet found a activity they’re passionate about, do the same and experience a wide variety. And he believes doing that is easiest at the Oval.

“The Oval has so many different activities there is almost nothing you can’t do,” says Ramsey. “As a student, options are always a good thing.”

And if the variety isn’t enough, Ramsey says the simple break from the stress of school is better spent doing something enjoyable and productive.

“I’d recommend a student membership to others because basically being a member at the Oval allows us students to take a break from all the stress schoolwork brings.”

For a high performance athlete like Ramsey, who was one of the 30 elite athletes in the province selected last summer for a spot on the U17 Team BC volleyball team, the Oval offers additional services which aid in his pursuit of excellence.

“The staff makes all the difference at the Oval,” he explains. “The coaches and other staff members are always so helpful and kind and it makes training much more enjoyable.”

All of this likely translates into Ramsey’s success away from the court. With an “A” average, he is a Principle’s Honour Roll student, proving a balance between school and exercise is possible.

Matthew Wagner: A Great Local Leader You Want Your Kids to KnowAs a hockey player with the Richmond Sockeyes, 20 year-old Matthew Wagner never fails to rise to the occasion and is reliable in important situations.

This attitude is the same one he carries into this Oval Sport Camps as a camp leader this Spring Break. Matthew is part of a team of accomplished and motivated local leaders with a passion for inspiring young kids and equipping them with the tools necessary to live successful lives.

“I’m going to try and develop you as a player both with your skills and your skating,” he says about his coaching style. “Teaching kids new things and seeing them accomplish their goals is a big thing for me.”

With a deep history in sports—having won championships in both hockey and baseball—Matthew will bring his technical expertise to the Oval’s on-ice camps. In addition to these sport specific lessons he, along with his fellow camp leaders, will also focus on developing transferable life skills. This is something Matthew himself has experienced during his time in sports.

“I think it’s made me more of a social person,” he says. “It’s given me the skills to communicate with others in life and in a team environment.”

He also believes the lessons learned on the ice, the field, the court, the dressing room and in any sporting environment – like sport camps – can have a positive effect for children in their academic lives.

“I think a lot of things can cross over,” he says of hockey and every day life. “Your work ethic on the ice should be the work ethic you have in school too.”

Upon reflecting on his coaches – past and present – Matthew admits that the lessons he has learned (and the ones he will try and teach as a coach) are rooted in sport but can be applied elsewhere as well.

“They (coaches) teach you control, composure and self-discipline.”

And most importantly, Matthew says sports are fun and make memories. “Just being around the boys” is something he will always remember about his time in hockey and baseball.

He looks forward to being a role model for kids at the Oval this spring and helping them create their own sporting memories. And in this case, his hockey mentality applies.

“If you need me in the big situations I’ll be there.”
