The Liturgical Year
The Liturgical Year, also known as the Christian year, consists of the cycle of liturgical seasons that determines, in Christian churches, when celebrations, memorials, commemorations, and solemnities are to be observed. The liturgical year follows the story of Godʼs redemption through Christ and is intended as a pedagogical aid for Christian discipleship- as the story of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ is modeled year after year.
The year begins with Advent, moves into Christmas, through Epiphany, and arrives at Lent, which is a season of preparation for Easter. At the end of Lent is what is known as the Great Triduum (the three great days)- which are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Saturday Easter Vigil. The story reaches its climax at Easter, which lasts fifty days and ends at Pentecost. After Pentecost, we enter Ordinary Time or the Trinity Season, during which the Church is to focus on living the Gospel in day-to-day life.
The Lenten Season What does Lent mean? Lent is a 40-day period before Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday (this year, March 9th). We donʼt count Sundays because they are ʻfeastʼ days, commemorating the Resurrection. Lent is a season of soul-searching, repentance and reflection. This tradition originated in the early Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when Christʼs followers sought to rededicate themselves to obedience, sacrifice and acts of service. At the heart of any worthy Lenten observance is a cultivated attitude of repentance and sorrow. A true repentance means a genuine change in heart and mind, a change of disposition where ever in our lives we need to return to God. That is why true repentance can never be satisfied by mere external observances, no matter how rigorous they are. Repentance is no morbid introspection or “guilt trip” in which we become bound up in ourselves, turned inward to the point of unhealthy despair. Rather, it has a holy and compassionate God as its focus. Therefore, Christian repentance always means faith in God, trusting him, responding to his grace. That is why whatever guilt or sorrow we may feel does not crush us, but rather brings us closer to the truth of Godʼs goodness toward His children.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may
turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you – the true and living bread.
Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely and run with
perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.
Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever
dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared
hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserve in order
to offer me complete forgiveness. I know that you have been raised from the
dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen.
Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be
undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If
what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of
who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and
that leads to the life you promise. Amen.

Call to Worship: We need to be “called” to come and worship God be-cause we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas, and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. Because sin is so pervasive in both our individual and
corporate lives, we are called to come before God with
honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for
both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We
confess corporately to show our unity even in our
brokenness.

Worship Through Giving: Because money is so
powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of
worship as we acknowledge that every- thing we have
comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with
us, we are just glad you are here- please do not feel

The Sermon: Some view the Sermon as a
way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore,

20 Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. 21 And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.” 22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.” 23 And he called them to him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. 27 But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house. 28 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— 30 for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.” 31 And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. 32 And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers [1] are outside, seeking you.” 33 And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”

Guidelines for Communion: Communion, also called the Lordʼs Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with His Church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament. And we look to his imminent coming again, the judge of the living and the dead, who will render to each according to his deeds. And he poured out his Holy Spirit on us in abundance, the gift and pledge of immortality, which makes the believers and the obedient into sons of God and co-heirs of Christ who is revealed, and we worship one God in the Trinity of holy name.

Childrenʼs Ministries at Cityview Nursery services are available for children 2 years of age and younger 10 minutes prior to
service continuing throughout the end of service.
Sunday School classes for children 3 years-5th grade are dismissed during the announcement
and greeting portion of the service. Ages 3-Kindergarten meet in room 134,
Grades 1st-5th meet in room 135. Children rejoin the service just before
communion. There is no Sunday School the last week of each month.
