Needlework where we will be having lunch.

There are several cafes in the area.

And our last stop will be Gail’s Patchwork Emporium in

Sebastopol.

Essen�als to bring along – water, shopping list, samples of

fabrics for projects, comfortable shoes, cash and credit card

(both are a must) and LARGE shopping bag for goodies.

Please bring a jacket or jumper if you are likely to feel the cold from the air condi�oners during summer and layers so

May 16th: Quilt In. The Challenge for the Quilt-In - ‘Seaside’. We are asking for 12

1/2” blocks. BLOCKS ONLY NO LAYERS WITH QUILTING. We are hoping you will agree to having your blocks made into a quilt that will then be donated to the charity we

are suppor�ng. Proceeds of our day will be donated to Co&age by the Sea. Finished

quilt will be displayed at the Exhibi�on in November The main speaker is Kathy Doughty. Kathy is a quilter and author and the owner of

the popular quil�ng shop, Material Obsession. Kathy brings an unconven�onal spirit

to a tradi�onal cra5. Kathy encourages quilters to use bold pa&erns and unusual colour combina�ons, and to trust their ins�ncts rather than follow rigid rules.

Trading tables, door prizes and mul�ple raffle prizes. Bring your lunch, mug and s�tching. Also a&ending are a group from the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild

As you can see by Heights advertisement, the business has been operating for 80 years. President's Report - Judith Oke

Dear Members, It is a pleasure to write to you and talk about the Committee’s plans to revisit one of our fundamental reasons for Guild, which is welcoming and sharing skills with beginners. This is why we have a Welcoming person stationed at our entrance table. And also why saying hello and offering a seat is how we can all be part of making a visitor feel at home and we hope you’ll come again. Thanks to Pam Planner raising this topic, through our Suggestion Box, Committee has had a number of interesting discus-sions on how we can help beginners and promote the Guild. Firstly we will look for opportunities to promote the Guild. To this end we had a GPQG information table at Spotlight, during their Sew and Quilt Fest on Saturday March 7th. Thank you to Judy Bubb for organising the roster and to all our members who participated. I have heard great reports as to the success of this day. Secondly we will be forming a Beginners Sit and Sew Group, starting in April, which will meet in the Front Room on the morn-ing of Guild days. This Group will be mentored by an experienced Guild member. More details will be in our next newsletter, but we invite any beginner patchwork and quilter to join in. This will be an opportunity to have your questions answered and develop skills. Please mention this to any non-Guild beginner friends you have. Thirdly we are committed to offering at least one Beginners workshop each year. So please watch our Workshop news to see when these are held. Also for the next few months I am going to take the opportunity to visit our local shops and enquire after their Beginner classes. So please keep an eye on our newsletter for website references to local shops who run Beginner classes. The list of shops that offer discounts to Guild members (please show your current Membership card) is

included in our newsletter.

This week I have had fun visiting Jiddi’s Patch, where I signed up for a VIP card (no need to be a Guild member). The VIP card is marked each time you spend $25 + and when the card is full you get a shopping voucher. Looking forward to that! Then off to the Geelong Sewing Centre where Bree offers 10% discount to Guild members

(conditions apply). She runs a Beginner’s Sewing Class, which is great for the basics.

Needless to say I also picked up some sewing notions (don’t you just love that term ‘notions’) at each shop. What an excuse to shop!

As to what I have been doing this last month, I have been working on my French Queen in preparation for Dijanne Cevaal’s new Medieval project. I look forward to seeing the other ladies that our members have embellished. http://origidij.blogspot.com.au/2015/02/medieval-project.html In case anyone asks whether I have been building my visual diary, the answer is ‘Yes’. Wandering back from a country long weekend I paused in Ballarat to, No not see the Be-gonias or the Antique Show, but to visit the Art Gallery of Ballarat. An amazing historic building with lovely exhibitions currently running. Also with a very smart Café and a fab-

ulous Gallery shop. I enjoyed the Vignettes Exhibition, on until March 15th. The four artists use the natural world as their primary inspiration, producing amazingly detailed botanical drawing style works in very different interpretations. Incredibly detailed and needing a close viewing with the glasses on! See the photo of the Exhibition flyer for an example of the works. And for a bit of fun, to reassure you that there is a whole new generation of creative sewers out there, have a look at these Melbourne ladies I saw recently strutting their beautiful ‘Steampunk’ style outfits. ‘Steampunk’ is when Victoriana style costuming meets technology, sort of like Cap-tain Nemo and his submarine out of Jules Verne. There are lots of young women and men enjoy-ing creating their own style, sewing their own garments and wowing the onlookers. May you have fun with your sewing. Judith Oke

GPAQG Beginners Sit and Sew.

Star�ng at the April Mee�ng, there will be a Beginners’group

mee�ng in the front room between 11am and 12 noon. This will

be a group working with Meg Pyburne and Anne&e Packet.

Bring along any ‘beginner type’ issues and ways to solve these

issues/problems will be discussed. Have your project with you or

if you are having trouble with ‘where to start’, bring along some

fabric, sewing no�ons, a sharp pencil, templas�c and a piece of

unused sandpaper and hand piecing will be tackled.

Come along once or every session.

Open to all interested patchworkers and quilters. Non Guild

members welcome.

This group will meet most months. It will not meet in May as we

will all be having too much fun at our Quilt-In!!


This month I have been busy making the website easier to navigate. I have given some of our ac�vi�es pages of their own, so now

you don’t have to click on the events page and scroll to what you want. In April the 2015 exhibi�on page will be added too. It’s all

very exci�ng.

As you all know, every year the Na�onal Wool Museum hold a scarf fes�val and last year our very own Margaret Drayton created an

award winning scarf. Entries are now open for this year’s fes�val. The theme for this year is “Coastlines” and so long as your scarf is

wearable it doesn’t ma&er what it is made of or how it is created. I encourage you to have a go. Entries close on the 8th

of May 2015.

Tim Tam Cheesecake Balls

Ingredients: 1 x 250g block cream cheese

Hello Everyone,Hello Everyone,Hello Everyone,Hello Everyone, What a month I have had. My family from Cairns have been staying with us for the last three

weeks, which of course necessitated the clearing out of bedroom number three of all my sew-

ing stuff. I am now located in the garage, where I can be as messy as I like. Might be a bit cold

in the winter though, so I plan to have a handyman build a wall and doorway, with some good

ligh�ng to separate the parking area from the storage area. [now my sewing area]. Our Son

had a spinal opera�on to remove some screws, which was a resounding success he is now

back in Cairns and swimming 2 Km a day. We are so fortunate to have such wonderful medical

exper�se in this country.

Method: Crush Tim Tams in a food processor, then add block of

cream cheese, mix well

Roll into teaspoon sized balls and freeze for at least 30mins.

Melt the chocolate and dip the balls in, ensuring each one is com-

pletely coated in chocolate.

Geelong Food Relief Centre Collec8on

Last month 34 items were delivered to the Food Relief Centre. They were very pleased to receive our dona�on and look forward to our deliv-

ery each month. Please con�nue to bring any of the following items, in average size (for uniformity and limited shelf space):

A blue trolley will be available at each Guild meeting to place your donated items into. These will then be taken to the Geelong Food Relief Centre for distribution.

They are about to open another mini mart in Geelong and are seeking volunteers to help out.

Sew & Quilt Festival—Spotlight

On Saturday, 7th March Spotlight held a Sew & Quilt Festival. To promote the Guild the committee decided

to ask Spotlight if we were able to have a table on the day to provide information to those interested.

The day was very successful. Bruce, the manager and staff provided us with 2 tables, 4 chairs, Brother sew-

ing machine to use, signs, balloons and display (fabric, thread, pins etc.)

Various techniques were shown and discussed, machine and hand piecing, joining binding, block construc-

tion, quilting etc. One of our members helped 2 customers chose colours for their next quilting project and

another help a customer to find an advertised sewing machine! And of course we had quilts on display

Displayed on the table were our new postcards with the Guilds contact details (designed by Jodie), leaflets

advertising our Quilt-In, Exhibition and Seachange Quilters Quilt Show.

Management of Spotlight and the Guild were very pleased with the day and hope to do it again in the fu-

ture so please consider volunteering next time. An ideal way to showcase our Guild.

June joined the Guild in 1986, one year a5er GPQG had been founded in 1985.

She was a cheerful and friendly member who enjoyed the fellowship of Guild. She resided in Sunbury Melbourne, but with a

holiday home in the Geelong area she regularly a&ended mee�ngs and was a willing contributor to Guild. She taught work-

shops at our Illawarra mee�ng place, and was a volunteer at Exhibi�ons.

Her passion was using patchwork as a distrac�on for mothers a&ending hospital with children with cancer. She gathered ma-

terial and made hexagons up into packs, and then sat in the hospital wai�ng room and showed mothers how to sew them to-

gether. Members assisted her by contribu�ng fabric and tacking hexagons for her projects.

June developed MS, but did not let this disrupt her Guild involvement. She con�nued to come to Guild while her health per-

mi&ed. In later years she was a familiar figure in her wheelchair, as her husband pa�ently drove her and her wheelchair to

Guild events.

June was a Guild member for a long �me. I don’t know exactly when she passed away, maybe

2008, but I remember her lovely smile and her ever constant interest in people and all things

patchwork. She was a worthy recipient of GPQG Life Membership.

A Great Lesson on Stress sourced from ‘A Piece of Cake’ by Ene Reade. A young lady confidently walked around the room with a raised glass of water while leading a seminar and explaining stress management to her audience.

Everyone knew she was going to ask the ul�mate ques�on, ‘Half empty or half full?’ She fooled them all. “How heavy is this glass of water?” she inquired with a smile. Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.

She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t ma&er. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. In each case it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”

She con�nued, “and that’s the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the �me, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.

As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden – holding stress longer and be&er each �me prac�ced.

So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the evening and into the night. Pick them up again tomorrow if you must.”

Read the rest if you want to. The best part was the story, above.

1. Accept the fact that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue!

2. Always keep your words so5 and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

3. Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.

4. Drive carefully… It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their Maker.

5. If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

6. If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

7. It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

8. Never buy a car you can’t push.

9. Never put both feet in your mouth at the same �me, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on.

10. Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance.

11. Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.

12. The second mouse gets the cheese.

13. When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.

14. Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

15. Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.

16. We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pre&y and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours, but they all have to live in the same box.

17. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

18. Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you today.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: Save the earth….. It’s the only planet with chocolate!

The Art Play Group As most are aware, we did not have a produc�ve year in 2014, due to our Leader, Esther Booth, being

unable to con�nue for personal reasons. This year, a5er a mee�ng at my home, it was decided to reinvent our group. We will

s�ll be a part of the Geelong Patchworkers, but meet separately.

Thoughts were that 1 hour before Guild day mee�ng, was just not enough �me to meet, as everyone wanted to catch up with

friends, library, fees etc.

SO, here we go for be&er or worse.!!! The former I hope.

Challenge:

Create a 12 1/2” Block with a seaside theme. These will be collected and hung at Quilt-In

for judging. Please pin your name on the back and hand them in at the Challenge table. They will be then made

into quilts for Cottage by the Sea.

The finished quilts will be displayed at our exhibition in November.

Golden Textures Exhibition

A contemporary art quilt exhibi�on, curated by local tex�le ar�st Jenny Ba-

con, with thirty-five works from twenty-five selected ar�sts, Australia-wide.

An acquisi�ve prize of $3,000 is on offer each year. The prize-winning quilt

then becomes part of the Central Goldfields Art Gallery permanent collec�on.

Ar�sts have been juried from their Expressions of Interest, with 25 ar�sts

selected from most states – Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, West

Australia, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory.
