SECOND SATURDAY
“To Lent or not to Lent.”
by Edward J. Moretto, Minister, Berea Christian Church
At this time of year some churches/denominations formally observe the season of Lent. When I’m asked if Berea Christian Church observes Lent, I answer, “Yes and no.” This is not an evasive answer. Lent is that season set aside in formal church liturgy to prepare for the eventual crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and, for His ultimate Resurrection. The practice probably began somewhere during the fifth century A.D. (See footnote.) Berea Christian Church, a congregation of Christians which traces its origins to an early 19th Century movement in sev-eral denominations to restore the faith and practices of the first century Church, does not follow any liturgy other than that found in Acts 2:42. This is the “No” part of the answer to the question in the first paragraph. The “Yes” part of the answer deals with our practice of maintaining the unity of Christians prayed for by Jesus in John 17:20 ff. We participate in the Ashland/Pleasant Plains Ministerial Association. During the Lenten season we share in pulpit exchange and in hosting of Sunday eve-ning worship services. This is done in that spirit of unity for which Jesus prays. We share with our brothers and sisters in other Christian denominations, forgetting differences, and it is here that we raise funds, through offerings, to help those in need in the communities of Ashland and Pleasant Plains. We are going into your 51st year with big plans!!
Our garden center and Lucky‟s will both open for the season in April. All of us are excited about that! We
do enjoy the burgers! If you have any special
requests from the garden center - let us know. We will be happy to order anything you wish.
We look forward to seeing you in April and every day until then!
This spring, Ashland citizens will see construction of two water lines into town, one from the west and one from the south. Great Plains Construction out of Missouri is the contractor for this project. These lines will
connect the village with North Morgan Water Cooperative and Cass Rural Water. At the same time, Wallbaum Plumbing of Ashland will be replacing all of the water meters in town, along with about one hundred meter pits and the billing software.. The new meters will be “radio read”, transmitting the readings electronically onto a laptop computer, and then downloaded onto the billing software without any chance of human error in reading the meters, writing the numbers down, and then manually entering them into the computer. The new
meters will also be able to record continuous water flow for a 24 hour period, potentially indicating a water
line break. The Illinois EPA will fund these improvements with a zero percent interest loan over twenty years, and will
forgive twenty five percent of the principal under the 2009 Economic Stimulus Bill. Even with those favorable terms, the citizens of Ashland will experience higher water rates than in the past. Whereas water rates are currently $7.65 per thousand gallons, the new rate will be $22.00 for the first thousand gallons, then $9.25 per thousand after that. That will amount to about a $17.55 per month increase for a home using three thou-
sand gallons. Although this is a substantial amount, doing nothing is NOT an option. The Illinois EPA is withholding several violations of our water treatment plant because we are working to secure an alternate water source and plant. To correct these violations would require several million dollars of upgrades to our existing plant.
Our crystal ball is sometimes not as clear as one would wish for when looking at twenty or more years into the future. The village board has looked at alternatives for at least nine years, and several options have been proposed. In light of today‟s information, this path that we are setting upon seems to have the best long
term results for our community.

PTO Sponsors Book Sale to Benefit A-C Central Middle & Sr. High School Library
February was a great month for the A-C Central Library in Ashland. The PTO sponsored
the Scholastic Book Sale during winter parent/teacher conferences in an attempt to
increase the paperback offerings in the school library. Scholastic Inc. offered a substantial
quantity of quality reading and reference materials for the library’s collection as an
incentive. All middle and high school students and faculty will be the beneficiaries of this
project. Thanks to all who made purchases or volunteered to work during the event!
