Knights - The Life Blood of the Order - Recruitment

KNIGHT

OF THE MONTH

Coming Soon!

It is important to recognize those brother Knights who go above and beyond. Please nominate a brother Knight today by passing their name to a Trustee or the Grand Knight.

MARCH RECRUITMENT BLITZWith March comes our second recruitment blitz for the fraternal year. We will be holding our blitz on Sunday March 27th after all masses and at our monthly pancake breakfast. Please wear you blazers and name tags if you are around and not helping with the breakfast. We will

need a couple of Brother Knights to be available to talk to prospective members.

The other important factor in recruitment is the visibility of our order. We are looking for volunteers to help with a number of events in the coming months to show the catholic men in our community what our family is about.

All Brothers are encouraged to help with as many of these events as possible.

And of course most importantly, please ask anyone that know who might be eligible, as a personal invitation is always the most effective way to recruitment new members.

Frank was born in Tornapole, Poland and came to Canada in 1927 with his mother and young brother to

meet his father who arrived two years earlier. The family settled in Fidelity, AB. Frank joined the Airforce

at the age of 16 and was stationed in the Pacific. In 1945 he married his wife Effie and farmed in

Mannville. The young family moved to Edmonton in 1954 and then in 1984 moved to Kelowna to enjoy

their retirement.

Frank is survived by his wife Effie, daughter Fances MacKay, son Rick (Marilyn), daughter Gail (Barry) Rhein, son Barrie (Denise),

GORGES, William (Bill) Mathias 1926-2011It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Gorges, husband, father, grandfather

and great grandfather on Thursday February 3rd at 9:15pm. Bill died at his home in Kelowna

surrounded by his beloved wife of 59 years Eleanore, his nine children Liz (Lorne) Smith, Craig

(Pam), Sue (Robert), Pat (Susan), Frank (Corinne), James (Gina), John, Jerome and Will Gorges,

his sister Ann Prior, as well as 25 grandchildren three great grandchildren, and many nieces,

nephews and cousins. He will be greatly missed and remembered forever.

The second youngest of seven, Bill Gorges was born April 15th 1926 on a farm in Manitou, Manitoba. As a young boy in between

farming chores, Bill sang and loved to play ice hockey. In 1943, at the tender age of 17, Bill enlisted in the Canadian Navy and on

Dec 24th 1944, he was sent to Europe aboard the HMCS Halifax, which was responsible for safely escorting US Naval Warships

across the icy North Atlantic. After the Liberation of Europe in 1945, Bill returned to Canada and was discharged from the Navy in

December of 1946. In 1947, with the help of the Veterans Land Act, Bill purchased a farm in Sperling, Manitoba. In the spring of

1951 he moved to Winnipeg where he met and fell in love with Eleanore Missler, a young city girl, and on October 27th 1951, he

married her. One year later on October 4th 1952, Bill and Eleanore welcomed the first of their nine children.

Between the years of 1951-1960 Bill worked the Sperling farm and was also employed by The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) as

a switchman. After selling the farm and leaving the CPR in 1960, Bill moved Eleanore and their 6 children to Atikokan Ontario, a

booming iron-ore town on the US border. In Atikokan, Bill owned and operated a Texaco Service Station. After the birth of his 9th

child in 1965, Bill once again packed up the family in the station wagon and headed west to Kelowna B.C. in 1966.

In 1967 Bill and his family would settle in their home of 42 years on Sarsons Road in the Mission. Between the years of 1967 and

1971 Bill worked for his brother-in-law Guido Prior managing several businesses ranging from restaurants to super markets. In

1972 they bought their first Dairy Queen and today 3 of his boys continue to own and operate 3 of them.

A devout and lifelong Catholic, Bill was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic School Board and the Catholic

men’s choir. In his later years, Bill enjoyed curling, bowling and sports spectatorship of all kinds. He was especially proud to watch

his grandson Josh play for the Montreal Canadiens. When not playing scrabble or bridge with his wife, Bill could often be found in

the garden, bringing beauty to the neighborhood.

The key to increased membership is vibrant, active, and visible service programs in our Church and Community. Our council currently has no Program Director and no Directors for 5 our of 6 program areas. In order to maintain the visible service programs we must fill these positions.

The Council Program Director is responsible for monitoring and coordinating the other Directors and providing them with the support they need. It sounds like a big job but the reality is that it can be managed with only a few phone calls and one meeting each month with the other Directors.

Each Director is responsible for coordinating the programs in in their program. Again not a large amount of time is required to do this. You should hold 1 meeting a month to plan events with your committee. However, your first task will be to

recruit a committee of Brother Knights who are interested in that service program. Our executive would like to see just 1 program in each program area that is new to our council launched before next June. This provides lots of time to choose and event or program, plan it and hold it.

Your executive will be there every step of the way to support you and help to make all programs a success. Step up today and take on a role as a Director or Council Program Director. Help to make our council the best that we can be in the service of Christ.

The program areas marked with a * to the right are still in need of a director.
