Mary Pratt’s precise still lifes often depict objects of the kitchen: food on plates, glass bowls, copper dishes and patterned tablecloths. This watercolour of a cut watermelon, with the quartered melon set at an angle and the cut part still attached to the rest of the melon by a fine remnant of core, shows her interest in light and shadow on delicate surfaces. In looking at the red flesh of the melon, flecked with seeds and partly in shadow, we can almost feel the texture of the fruit. Pratt often includes glass objects in her still lifes, as well as liquids and other highly reflective materials. Her colour choices are equally high-keyed, such as the red and black against the green of the melon’s skin as we see here. Pratt’s discerning eye captures the effects of light as it illuminates each colour and then changes as it passes into shadow. Light is rendered with great precision in her works. This watercolour is a superb example of her technique, and is the basis for the woodcut series of the same name.

For Mary Pratt, her domestic environment is redolent with meaning. Whether a cod fillet on tinfoil in her kitchen, or a room setting such as this lovely scene, Pratt finds visual beauty in the simple things around her. Although Pratt claims she depicts the surfaces of objects because she simply likes the look of them, avoiding moral statements or subjects with social implications, still there is a great deal more going on. Like realists such as Jack Chambers, who painted his living room, or Alex Colville painting himself and his wife in front of an open fridge, Pratt, in painting these ordinary moments, expresses something extraordinary. The profoundly aware eyes of the realist artists turning their attention to what is around them is transformative. In Still Life with Roses, although the beauty of the roses at first seems to dominate, the real point of the work is Pratt’s meditation on light – reflecting off the glass table and other surfaces, and infusing the room. Rather than the smooth, perfect surfaces of her oils, Pratt’s brush-strokes are evident in this luminous and painterly watercolour.

January 5, 1992, traveling from 1992 - 1993 to the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Windsor and the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa

Literature: Scott Watson, Jack Shadbolt Drawings, 1994, images 1 - 4 reproduced pages 140 - 143Scott Watson, Jack Shadbolt, 1990, page 140, two works reproduced page 141

Each work is signed and the full sheet paper dimensions for each work is 26 x 39 inches. The artist has intended that the works be displayed individually or as a group, stacked 5 wide and 4 high. Here is a link to the completed installation. In describing the works, Jack Shadbolt writes: "The series Night Garden Transformations began as far back as 1973 as a single pen drawing 26 x 40 in. which I then had photo-transferred and printed as a lithograph of the same size (see plate 1). Years later, having on hand a number of copies of the black and white litho from the original drawing, I began, as I often do in afterthought about my work, to see possible variations of the theme. So with pen and ink of the same black as the litho I began to alter the first design, obliterating parts and seeing new images in the transformed pieces that were left. My inventiveness was stimulated and I became more and more fascinated with the re-configurations that were taking place. At intervals, when I felt a little stale about my studio painting, I would take out one of these lithos and alter it again for yet another variation until finally I found I had done about 40 of them. I saw that they had become ‘fantasies’; and the idea came to me of linking them together as parts of one larger concept. I began to think of a wild night garden where, in the magic of the dark, presences new and strange might emerge and play their delighted games of change and interchange. And I became intrigued with the showing of these changes in the process of change – a bird slowly becoming another kind of bird; a flower disappearing and emerging as a butterfly; other flowers becoming fish, birds becoming animals lurking in the grass. The night garden could be full of wonders one never encountered by daylight. Thus this series grew out of the transformations of existing imagery through eliminations and re-drawing. It became a game of invention and there remained only the necessity for a certain editing into transformational sequences - sequences which, of course, can be changed at will, for there is no linear logic in the series, only perhaps the surreal logic of the dream."Please note: Scott Watson has catalogued this series as 36 works, 20 of which are currently being offered in this collection. The remaining 16 pieces are located in Wilfred Watson's Fonds in the University of Alberta Archives.

Born in 1937 in Japan, Miyuki Tanobe spent many years travelling, studying and painting across Europe, and while in France, she enrolled at École Supérieure Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Tanobe immigrated to Canada in 1971 and settled in Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. Her works are painted in nihonga, a traditional form of Japanese painting performed directly on the floor. Colorful and active, Restaurant Dorion showcases Tanobe’s warm affection for city life in Quebec as the children and residents playfully interact with each other on the street corner. Characteristic of Tanobe’s style, the work is bright and simplistic, yet surprising and unexpected aspects of reality are found in the details.

In this 2002 photograph, Edward Burtynsky documents the city and people of Feng Jie as they demolished their own edifices by hand, brick by brick, to make way for the Three Gorges Dam reservoir. The flooding from this hydro-electric dam, by far the world’s largest, required the relocation of 13 cities and more than 1.24 million people, and remains an extraordinary and controversial solution to China’s ever-increasing power needs. This image is a testament to the culture lost beneath the rubble that extends as far as the eye is permitted, seen through a haze of construction dust and small fires. Burtynsky astutely points out that although these images resemble war zones, they are in fact industrial sites, and represent a willingness for change on a massive scale in exchange for power.

Albert Dumouchel (1916, Bellerive, QC - 1971, Montreal) was a master printmaker and multidisciplinary artist. After studying printmaking in Paris before the war, he returned to Montreal and worked alongside influential artists such as Alfred Pellan. In 1948 he signed the manifesto Prisme d'Yeux written by Jacques Godefroy de Tonnancour, which was launched a few months before the Refus Global. Prisme d'Yeux called for artistic freedom through a more diverse avant-garde open to different artistic points of view. Like Pellan and Bellefleur, Dumouchel did not want to affiliate himself with any artistic school or movement. In the early 1950s, one of his great accomplishments was the illustration of the poetry of Roland Giguère. Dumouchel was a pioneer in his field and dedicated his life as an artist and teacher to the advancement of printmaking as a fine art medium. As a teacher at the École des arts graphiques de Montréal and the École des beaux-arts de Montréal, Dumouchel greatly influenced many future generations of printmakers. In 1989, the national contest for the Prize Albert-Dumouchel was created in order to commemorate Dumouchel as an important forerunner of printmaking in Canada, and to encourage and inspire other young generations of printmakers.
