Does Your Child Read?

One of the key initiatives being undertaken by the

school this year is a focus on improving students’ literacy. As part of that work we have appointed a Literacy Progress Teacher, Sally Willow, who is working with selected students, helping them to make progress with their literacy. In addition she is overseeing, with our Librarian, Gina Pellet, the Accelerated Reading programme. We mentioned this programme in an earlier edition but in short it is an on-line programme which encourages students to read, tests their understanding of what they

have read and challenges them to read more challenging books. The focus on improving literacy is there because good levels of literacy are key to a student’s ability to access the curriculum and make good progress. Whilst there is a particular focus on those students with lower levels of literacy, the initiative encompasses all students as the benefits of reading and high levels of literacy more generally are closely linked to achieving high attainment. The Accelerated Reading programme is currently, largely focused on Year7, but with some targeted students in Years

8 and 9 also involved. The percentage of students involved is over 60% of Year 7 with a very high percentage of them raising their reading levels. This is a very encouraging start and one on which we shall build in the coming years as we roll it up the school.

Can you help? The answer is very definitely, “Yes!” Encouraging your child to read, at as earlier an age as possible, is one of the most effective ways of improving literacy and improving educational outcomes. We mention our “Get Caught Reading” campaign in this edition, which is a campaign to demonstrate the importance of reading and how “cool” it is to read. If you would like to know more about the Accelerated Reading programme or want to encourage your child to read, or read more, then do take advantage of promoting reading at home whilst our campaign is on or contact Sally Willow to find out more.

Easter and Year 11 – as we break up for the Easter break, I remind parents of students in Year 11 of the importance of using this

period effectively to prepare/revise for their examinations. Examinations start in May and time is rushing on. Every student will know what they should be doing during the holiday period, so please do encourage them to give plenty of quality time to this work. Setting aside a similar agreed time each day of approximately 3/4 hours is a useful guideline, although the amount of time will vary from student to student, depending on the number and range of final exams they are taking. It will also vary according to their capacity, strengths and needs, which you may well be the best judge of. Concentrated revision on any one topic should be done in short bursts of time, whilst practice papers, essays etc. can be done over a more extended period of time It is, however, also important that they have plenty of relaxation and down time pursuing their interests, hobbies etc. It’s all about balance.

I wish them all well and I wish you all a very Happy Easter.

On Friday 9th March, the Art department took 64 year 10 students to the

V&A Museum in London for a research trip. We left very early and took a coach straight up to the gallery which is situated next to the Natural History Museum in central London, we spent the morning wandering around the impressive and enormous museum before stopping for lunch and then moving onto the Natural History Museum across the

road. Students in all four of the year 10 Art groups have worked on the various themes which have required them to study natural forms for their projects and have had to research historical and contemporary arts and crafts so the trip was a perfect opportunity for the students to be exposed to Arts and culture that they might not have otherwise have seen. The museum would really need about 2 days to walk around and explore in depth so the students didn’t have much time to absorb the wealth of amazing artefacts, from the contemporary photographic gallery to the ancient carvings from Asia and beyond and the incredible cloak made from cloth woven from spiders threads which was in the national news recently. Students were asked to use the research trip to find artefacts of inspiration which could inform their current projects, taking

p h o t o g r a p h s and bringing back postcards, the students were also to sketch objects or paintings that interested them. It was really great to see the students respond so positively to the work.

In the afternoon, we headed over the road to the Natural History

Museum to broaden our research. Our journey back from London took much longer than expected as the London traffic was heavy to say the least and we arrived back in the early evening. Despite this, the students remained in really good spirits and were an absolute joy to take out of school. They were well mannered around the gallery and they represented the school in such a positive way, it makes us realise what great kids we have here at Willingdon!

On World Book Day 2012, Willingdon Community

School came to a standstill for 30 minutes between 8.30 and 9.00am, when every student and staff member in the school stopped to read their favourite book. There was a real book buzz around the school, as everyone was reading and talking about their favourite books. Staff and students were snapped reading in unusual places for a Get Caught Reading competition and display, prompting some really creative entries. The Gym and Rugby clubs dedicated their whole hour of after school activities to Getting Caught Reading, with some fabulous results.

Other activities included all students being given a £1 book voucher, which they could exchange for a brand new book from the school library, or take to any book shop for £1 off a book. The library also hosted a book quiz, book swap and favourite book poll.Year 7 students and tutors shared their favourite reading experiences in assembly, including why it can be good to read electronic books, such as using a Kindle or iPad. Bruton, also in year 7, was the winner of a competition to win a favourite book, chosen from a selection of students who have achieved 100% on Accelerated Reading quizzes the previous term. Accelerated Reader is a reading scheme used by the school, enabling students to take an online quiz each time they

finish reading a book. Students are working towards a prize draw to win a Kindle at the end of the year. Also on World Book Day, Willngdon Community School was fortunate to be presented with two signed copies of a book by Jonathan Morris, whose son Ben Morris is in year 7. The book, “The Broken Stone”, was presented to Ben’s form tutor Mr Creighton and school librarian Mrs Pellett in the LRC at break

time. One copy is available for students to take out from the school library, and the other copy is available for staff to read. Some students in years 7 and 8 have also been inspired to write their own book of short stories, based on World Book Day, which will be published in the school

library for everyone to read. Short story titles include, “The Book Curse”, “Speedy-Brainz and the Book Bandits” and “BookStars: Mission Possible”. Everyone enjoyed this unique opportunity to get involved with World Book Day at Willingdon Community School.

There are now two extra reasons for using ParentPay, the online payment system for the school meals service. Just by activating your child’s account, and using the ParentPay system at least once for payment, this will automatically enable students to be entered into a termly draw to win a £30 iTUneS voucher at the School! All you need to do is register and activate the ParentPay account, load money onto your system (minimum £10) and you will be in with a chance of winning!

In addition to this incentive, Chartwells, our school meals partner, have joined together with "Mary's Meals", a charity that supports the poorest children in Malawi, committed to build, and support feeding kitchens in two large primary schools there. For every meal purchased from the school meals service, Chartwells will then award points, which will then be converted into meals at some of the poorest primary schools in Malawi. For more information on the work of the Mary's Meals charity please go to www.marysmeals.org.uk

Back in November nine keen mathematicians from Year 11 at Willingdon Community School came back after school for an hour and a half of high level maths questions compiled by UKMT at the University of Leeds in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. It is a Challenge open to Years 11, 12 and 13, and is regularly done by some of the most famous independent schools in the country.

The students found it hard work but looked forward to their results, which they have now received.

Harrison Clark and Rebecca Preston received Bronze certificates, putting them in the top 40% of the entries. Ryan French gained a

silver certificate, putting him in the top 19%. Lucian Leveles topped them all by getting a gold certificate, which means he has a mathematical brain in the top 6% of sixth-formers in the country! And the others, Felicity Mott, Bex Packham, natasha Cornell, Byron Milsom-Smith and Becky Marshall all came within a few marks of gaining a Bronze certificate.

And who says the level of Mathematics in comprehensive schools is low? Certainly not anyone at Willingdon!

Intermediate Maths Challenge

After school on 2nd February, 14 students from Years 9 and

10 sat for an hour in MA2 doing the National Intermediate

Maths Challenge, run by the University of Leeds. These Maths

Challenges are done by many very prestigious independent

schools as well as comprehensives, and the quality of results is

always very high.

Our results were good, with six certificates being earned by some

very clever students.

Well done to everyone who had a go, and especially to Kieran, who

has now done the Grey Kangaroo Challenge, which he assured me

was A LOT harder!

pARENt iNFoRmAtioN CoNtACt - JAYNE BiGSBYThis month sees the start of the Marathon season. On 25th March 2012 I shall be running in the Hastings Half Marathon (13.5 miles) to raise money for a local young lady named Chloe who at 19 years old has been diagnosed with Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy or LHON. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leber's_hereditary_optic_neuropathy

I know some of you have bought wrist bands at school and some of you know Chloe personally through Guiding. I first came across Chloe in the local paper in an article explaining about her ‘Fight for Sight’ and immediately became interested as I have experienced what it is like to have a child with visual problems and as much as I wanted to help Chloe, raise money to seek treatment abroad or to help with adaptations that will become necessary in order for her to live independently, I also did it for her Mum.

I would very much like to help the family and ask you to look at this website www.chloesfightforsight.co.uk if you wanted to sponsor me that would also be lovely, my email address is below.

If you know a family that has a child with a visual impairment there is a wonderful charity called www.look-uk.org that offers support to parents and families and can put you in touch with other families in the area. There is also great support from www.blatchingtoncourt.org.uk that offer services and support to people under 30, including IT technology to help with studies and assisting with employment.

On a completely different note I am currently seeking a Maths tutor that can visit a person’s home for extra tuition for a college student studying accounts. If you can help please email me below.

Please remember I am here to find out information for you and have access to lots of websites and people that can help you with any questions you may have relating to any subject that may help you and your child. Please feel free to email me. I aim to answer within 24 hours. Thank you for reading my article this month. Jayne [email protected]

The day was an amazing event for both the children and the teachers that were getting involved with the news reports. There was a lot for us to do and we didn’t get any help from other people we all had to do it on our own. Some of us

were looking for top headlines to go on the news; some were editing reports that were done by children in year 8, whilst others were writing live blogs for people to follow. Whatever you were doing you would have enjoyed yourself as there

were a lot of things for you to do. A lot of the children that were doing this said that they would like to do next year. The best event of the day was when you had to help get everything set up for the big shoot. At the time of the shoot everyone was nervous but also happy

as they would see if their work was good and accurate to go on the news. As a group and a team we all had a lot of fun and worked together well. In the end everyone had fun filming, taking pictures or writing.

On Friday 27th January, a team of Year 7 students: Abigail Hughes; Emily Hughes; Kian Dimmock and Harry Kendall, took part in the Eastbourne Education and Business Partnership 2012 Young Engineers Challenge. Eighteen other schools competed for this year’s trophy at St Bede’s Prep School Sports Hall.

With sponsors from a number of businesses, including Alfa Laval, Wright Flow Technologies and HMD Pumps, the students enjoyed an exciting day of challenges and met up with some of their primary school friends.

Armed with materials for the challenge:

• 2 litre fizzy water bottle• Heavy duty scissors• Compass• Coloured pens/pencils• Ruler• Etc and lots of enthusiasm

They set off for the day with no clues about what they might make.

THE BLOODHOUND

Each student received a certificate “recognising achievement” and came home with a souvenir from the day – a framed photograph, now in the D&T showcase just outside Room DT1. Kian’s DVD has been shown to his tutor group and will hopefully appear on the Education and Business Partnership website.

Miss Bolton

“ The day at St Bede’s was really interesting and we all

enjoyed it lots. First we watched a short film that told us about the

Bloodhound and it’s mission to reach 1000 miles per hour. Then we

were set the challenge of building a car out of a plastic bottle and

Knex. It also had to look as close to the Bloodhound as we could

get it. Kian and Harry started to build the structure of the car and

Kian started recording the whole day on his camera on a tripod.

Abi and I had another challenge to work on and built a parachute

that would carry an egg safely to the ground without breaking

it. It had to land on a square on the floor below the balcony in the

Sport’s Hall. Miss Bolton came to watch some of the action and

we enjoyed watching the event all over again, back at school, on

Kian’s fast frame DVD! We got a mention in the newspaper for

our winning Bloodhound car and met the mayor too”

YEAR 9 WHAt’S mY liNE

This event took place Wednesday 14th March, involving all of Year 9 as part of their Careers Programme. The aim of the event was

for our students to increase their knowledge of the types of job that are available locally. We did this by inviting local employers in on this morning, these were then interviewed by our students asking them questions as to what their jobs entailed. The rest of the year had to try and guess the jobs from the employers answers. Once guessed, our local employers then spent time explaining what their job involves, what their best and worst bits were, and also the Career Pathway they took in order to reach that position.

It was a fun morning, with the students successfully guessing the majority of the employers’ jobs. Our employers were particularly impressed by our students and the standard of questions being asked. Well done Year 9!!

Your hard work will really help to transform children's lives. The money you have donated will help UNICEF use sport to transform the lives of children. in Uganda, sport is vital, giving children the chance to play, and escape from adult responsibilities. It is also used as a way to encourage children to continue their education, and the bring together communities.
