Irrigation

It seems we have finally sorted out all the hardware problems.

We have ordered 10 Megalitres a week for irrigation, but with no

predicted rainfall and with Buffalo & William hovel levels drop-

ping dramatically, we may be put on restrictions shortly.

Greens

Still recovering slowly, some dry patches around the edges, but

overall not too bad. As the temp drops over the next 6 weeks,

we should see some good growth with the bent grass which will

enable us to start to groom & lightly dust the greens with sand.

The couch is ttending to take over, we have ordered some

chemical (Tupersan) to subdue the couch, but it will continue to

get worse each year. Currently the only way to successfully re-

move couch from bentgrass greens is a green replacement pro-

gram. Once a bentgrass variety is chosen from the current trial,

we will be extending the nursery to about 400m2 (currently

120m2)

Green surrounds

Some more shaping will occur over the next few weeks as time per-

mits.

Bent Grass nursery

The trial plots are varieties A1, A4, Mackenzie, Pen G2, Declara-

tion and 007. Unfortunately the variety Authority failed to germi-

nate. All plots now have a satisfactory cover and are responding

well to fertilizing and topdressing applications that are adding

body to the turf as well as withstanding the lack of rainfall and

warm conditions that we are experiencing. After consulting with

the AGCSA president Andrew Peart after an onsite inspection,

no fungicide will be applied to the nursery to determine which

bent varieties are best suited against fungal diseases that are

prone to the region. The nursery is currently being cut at 8mm

with a pedestrian cylinder mower and will gradually be lowered

until the mower height reaches 3mm . Fertilizing and topdressing

practices will continue in the meantime. At this point of time there

is very little difference between the performances of the different

bent varieties.

Fairways

Some fairways are looking great, others are struggling with the

gum trees taking most of the water. The fairway mower is out of

adjustment, we have McTees coming this Friday to hopefully get

another few months out of it. We will require a new fairway

mower around Aug/Sep 2013.

Bunkers

Most were rotary hoed and faces boarded on the working bee

day, as we are still irrigating. They still get wet & compacted.

Working Bee

A big thanks to all who attended the working bee on Sunday 3rd

Feb.

Bunkers were reshaped. Gardens weeded. Tee blocks & dis-

tance markers painted. Paths & around tee signs sprayed. There

are still lots of small projects that we require help with. Please

members support your club by attending working bees.

The Schoolteacher was taking her first golfing lesson.

"Is the word spelt p-u-t or p-u-t-t?" she asked the instructor

"P-u-t-t is correct", he replied.

"Put means to place a thing where you want it. Putt means merely a

vain attempt to do the same thing."

Juniors

We are fortunate in this club to have as junior members

a group of young people whose characters and person-alities are as attractive as their on-course exploits.

We will be looking at them all in coming issues of the newsletter. This month we introduce Sam and Angus Mclean.

There’s a special reason for this: both boys, aged 13 and 11 respectively, are competing in this year’s Skills Tests held in conjunction with the Victorian Open Cham-pionships at Thirteenth Beach on the Bellarine Peninsu-lar. They each competed last year at Spring Valley, where Sam was runner-up to Mateus Sanchez in his age division, but won the driving section. This year, they’ve each won the regional competitions in their age-groups, hence the trip to Thirteenth Beach. The Skills Tests are run nationally and are very scientifically worked out and very searching in their examination of a young golfer’s abilities in long and short play. If attitude is any guide, our two young players will do well!

Sam and Angus started golf pretty much together at Christmas-time in 2010. Both were rookies, neither of their parents played, they had no particular physical or other advantages that were at all obvious. But Sam started on a handicap of 34, and after two years is down to 13. Angus hasn’t progressed so dramatically, but golf isn’t his major passion whereas cycling is.

Both received lessons from Alex, and subsequently from the McCully team in Yarrawonga and now at WGC. Sam practices on average three times a week, hitting bucket after bucket of balls on the driving range, and plays in the men’s comp. most Saturdays. He doesn’t play in any particular four – simply puts down his name in the time-slot most convenient for him (the Mcleans live nearly 30 k out of town, so his starting time is heavily dependent on his parents’ sched-ule). How do adults react to finding a 13-year-old with them on the tee? Very generously, Sam advises. How about when he out-drives them? (Unfair ques-tion I think, even as I ask it.) But Sam is typically modest in his response, and that springs, I think, from the fact that he has a very adult and practical attitude to his game – one that all experienced golfers hope to share: you play your own game, you play the course, if you play well that’s great, if you play badly it’s no one’s fault but your own.

He has in his bag a driver and fairway wood, two hybrids, 5,6,7,8,9 irons, pitch-ing wedge, putter and two further wedges: a 54 and 58. If he has any particular difficulty, it’s with the 5 iron, which he sometimes finds hard to stop on its run (he calls it a long iron, which I find vexing because I obviously can’t hit it any-where near as long as he does!) and his favourite is probably the 58 wedge which he likes to loft with a bit of draw and drop gently on the green.

Any advice for young golfers? I ask. Sam’s answer is immediate, definite and succinct: Take lessons.

Not bad advice for almost anything, really.

January-Feb Answer was B

Mention Friday evening twilight competition around Wangaratta Golf Club, and two things spring to mind: daylight saving, and Eddie Rainbow. For more than 35 years Eddie has nurtured and expanded and sponsored this event, and seen its popularity reach a level that hardly varies from year to year.

Which came first? Well, daylight saving, in 1972. Eddie relocated his business Rainbow Filters from Melbourne in 1974 in response to the decentralization movement then so much in vogue. A minor inducement was the offer of imme-diate membership of the local golf club – and it would be pleasant to say that Eddie accepted with alacrity and at once made his mark as a top player.

In fact, at fifty years of age Eddie had played precisely two rounds of golf – and it says much for the power and fascination of the game which binds us all that he worked his way down to a handicap of 11, won a Singles Knockout (his name’s up there in gold), founded the twilight competition - and in the process

became the longest enduring Sponsor which the club has ever known.

What’s in a name? Smith Filters or Jones Filters don’t exactly have the ring of Rainbow Filters, so Eddie started out with that advantage at least, plus good ideas and technical know-how and plenty of hard work. Rainbow Filters provides air conditioning filtering both for home and industry (some of its units are as big as an average room) and Eddie founded it in Melbourne, and ran it there and in Wang. until he turned 79.

That was ten years ago. But don’t think for a moment that at 89 his golfing days are over. Eddie still plays regularly, aided by mechanical transportation, and of course still plays the twilight competition, though others now run it. He doesn’t claim sole responsibility for its foundation (there were three or four involved in the very early days) but he was for many years the major enduring organizer as well as sponsor, and has seen it grow and develop its own personality – the bringing of a plate in the early days, the expansion to a DIY barbecue, the provision of bar facilities, the crea-tion of a warm social event.

There are major prizes to be distributed at the end of each daylight saving period. The trophies are provided from a fund to which Eddie and wife Phil substantially con-tribute. Rainbow Filters is no longer Eddie’s property – but they continue to contrib-ute as well, which reveals something of Eddie’s personality and persuasiveness. And perhaps that bristly moustache – Eddie is one of those rare individuals who during the war did time in two services: the Artillery as a gun-layer, and the R.A.A.F as a trainee pilot – and the determination and initiative this reveals have served him and our club well.

Which came first?
