COMMANDERS COLUMN

Greetings Compatriots and Ladies,

I hope all have weathered the ice storms well. It has been a trying winter thus far. It can only have been

a very small sample of what our forefathers would have seen and lived through during the winter months

spent in battles north of “The Independent Republic Of Horry County”. As our ancestors certainly with-

stood the battles in snow and ice, so must we continue our battle to preserve their Heritage and Legacy.

The memory of our Confederate Heroes have always been just one generation away from being lost. As

our daddies, and their daddies before them fought in the Pacific and European theaters, on and beyond

the Korean 38th parallel, in the sweltering Jungles of Vietnam, or even today in the shifting sands of the

Middle East.. Folks always become weary of war. They (and we) become uneasy speaking of the death

tolls of our people in this great nation through war. However, there is only one soldier today whom is

under constant attack for his services to his country. The Soldier of The Confederate States of America. It

is this soldier who is mocked, scorned, and lied about constantly. This soldier is under attack by almost

anyone who can use his name in an untruthful manner to further their agenda. Ladies and Gentlemen, we

are their last hope of remembrance. We must preserve their final resting places, and pass the legacy of

these heroes down to the next generation. After all, our Confederate ancestors are also theirs.

I look forward to seeing all of you in Florence for the Division Convention. The Pee Dee Rifles Camp

are planning for one of the best reunions yet. You don’t want to miss it. Also, don’t forget that we have

rescheduled the Hwy clean-up for March 15th. I hope to see a good turn out. Let us keep up our recruiting

efforts and get some new fresh faces coming out to help celebrate the memory

of one of the finest soldiers in history. Remember, it is your duty to see that

the true history of the South is presented to future generations.

May God bless and keep you all in his

grace. Deo Vindice!

1st Lt. Commander’s Report

Greetings Compatriots;

As we are approaching March, it is time for things to start happening, The Columns, and the Division Convention. We are planning to gather at The Columns as part of the Pee Dee Light artillery, to camp, cook, and to practice on our marching. This is a two day event and the closest one in our area, if you have never been it is a good time come out and see for yourself. At the end of the month our Convention will be held also in Florence, the 28th, 29th, of March, hosted by our Compatriots at Pee Dee Rifles Camp. It would be great to see all of you at the Columns, our next meeting on the 18th, and at the Convention.

Johnny Sessions

Hello all, OCR News

The OCR is very busy getting ready for the reunion coming up in March. Betty, Marie, and I have been

making the gifts for the OCR lady's meeting. We also have National coming up soon and I hope to see all

of you there, as we are the hosting state this year. In April we need to elect a new President for our

chapter. Now that I am the State President I can no longer do both jobs, as it is just to much. If you would

like to run or nominate someone, please let me know. I have enjoyed being your president very much, and

I will assist the new president in any way needed.

Thank You,

Lisa Graham - President

The Color Sergeants - Truth in History

Take a moment and study these two images. This is the face of war.

This young unknown Confederate soldier was someone’s son,

brother or husband. He fought against tyranny and for states rights.

It is their memory we need to remember and celebrate. .…… "To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the cause for

which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's

good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the

perpetuation of those principles which he loved and which you love also, and those

ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish."

Are you a Guardian ? Why Not ?

Continuing with our eye on cleaning markers, once you have determined that the stone is

a candidate for this service (if there is ANY question as to suitability, don't do it) First,

remove any loose dry materials with a soft-bristled brush. Then test-clean a small

unnoticeable area before going further. This test will alert you to any problems that might

come up before you commit to the whole stone. For your initial cleaning, use only clean

water, warm (not hot) works best, wetting the stone thoroughly, then scrubbing with a

soft-bristled brush and only the plain water. (only tampico natural or soft plastic brush,

never wire). Always clean a stone from the bottom up to avoid streaking. Be sure to use

plenty of water to rinse. Next installment, we'll look to additional cleaning agents and

their use on different types of stones on the off chance that your initial cleaning doesn't

bring suitable results.

Anyone interested please contact me with any questions.

REFLECTIONS OF A CONFEDERATE ANCESTOR

Daniel Martin was born Feb. 18, 1842 in Horry County South Carolina, and died on Dec. 9, 1910. He was the son of Isaac Martin and Sarah Jane McCrackin. He married Victoria Jordan who was born 1852. The children of Daniel and Victoria Martin are: Isaac McMartin 1869-1912, Margaret J. Martin 1871-unk, Willie James D. Martin 1873-1936, Mary "Mollie" F. Martin b. 1875-1952, Catherine Vick Martin 1877-1932, Joseph Franklin Martin 1886-unk, Archie Martin 1889-unk, and Daniel Gus Martin 1881-1953. Daniel enlisted on Jan. 1, 1862 with Co E, 26th SC Infantry, CSA. He was a POW survivor from Point Lookout, MD. He was released from Pt. Lookout June 29, 1865 & walked barefoot all the way back to Horry County, SC. The Yankee's took all the shoes away from the Confederates & made them walk away from the POW Camps barefoot. The 26th was made up from a consolidation of the 6th and 9th Infantry Battalions in late 1862 because the two battalions were essentially wiped out in that first summer of fighting in Virginia. The 26th Infantry Regiment was organized at Charleston, South Carolina, in September, 1862. After serving in South Carolina he along with his unit moved to Mississippi, and was placed in N.G. Evans' Brigade, where they confronted the Federals at Jackson. Later the regiment returned to Charleston, then in the spring of 1864 was sent to Virginia. Here it was assigned to Elliott's and Wallace's Brigade. It participated in the long Petersburg siege south and north of the James River and ended the war at Appomattox. The 26th suffered their greatest single battle loss at the Mine Explosion, (The Crater) July 30, 1864 when they lost 72 men. They lost many more at Sayler's Creek, and surrendered at Appomattox with General Robert E. Lee.
