March 2015
Principal’sMessageColumbia Community,During the month of March Columbia students will be taking the new, on-line state assessment. This is going to be a new process on comput-ers instead of the pencil and paper version that has been used historically. Please know that we will have specific requirements for this and test one grade level at a time. We need you to encourage your child to do their best and remain focused during their testing sessions.
Students have been able to practice many aspects of on-line learning here at Columbia and we are excited about the technical knowledge they’ll put to use. Students will be assigned a specific computer to use during their testing time.
Students need to implement perseverance as they read through problems and answer questions. One example of this is that students are re-quired to review their work prior to completing the testing session. I know that perseverance at the middle school age is a growing skill and patience goes hand-in-hand with that as well.
Students will NOT be allowed to have cell phones, kindles, tablets or any other technology device in the room during testing. This is a state rule and if violated it will void testing automatically. Students should either leave their devices at home or turn them off and store them in their lockers during the testing session.
The most important advice is for students to get a good night’s rest, eat something for breakfast, relax, and do their best. This is the first time Colorado has had an on-line assessment. I know our kids will do an excellent job. As always, thank you for making our middle school number one in Aurora! We’ve celebrated eight straight years as a performance school and our kids have shown exceptional growth. Encourage your child, help them relax, and have some fun.
Steve Hamilton, Principal

Steve Hamilton, Director

MessagefromOurRegistraraboutUpdatingYourPhoneNumberDue to our recent periods of extreme weather and the need to send out notifications to parents via our automated message system, this is a good time to remind families of the importance of keeping the school informed of current phone numbers for themselves and the student’s emergency contacts.
At the beginning of the school year, part of the back to school packet included a student verification form to update numbers and emergency contacts. These were entered into the student’s file, but during the emergency dismissals, some families required assistance from a family member or friend not on the list.
To make changes for your student, a demographic change form will have to be submitted to the school. These may be obtained at the school or online at www.aps.k12.co.us in the Centralized Admission sections, or from Columbia’s main office.
ColumbiaMiddleSchool–PTSOParents the Colorado Student Assessment Program starts in March at Columbia. The PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readi-ness for College and Careers) and CMAS (Colorado Measure of Academic Success) will be utilized this school season.
Parents if you could please stress the importance of the testing to your students. It also prepares them for ACT and SAT testing in high school. Things that will help your student during the week of testing include:
• Makingsureyougetyourstudentstoschoolontimeandinschool during the testing sessions.

CrosswalkSafetyParents,We need your help! We are looking for committed morning and afternoon volunteers to supervise crosswalk safety for our students. Columbia will provide safety vests and stop signs as well as training on cross walk safety and protocol. We are looking for 2 volunteers every morning from 8:10-8:30 and from 3:50-4:10 each afternoon. As a reminder, parents please make sure that your child us the crosswalk to safely cross onto school grounds. We have had a lot of close calls of students almost being hit by car due to crossing outside of the crosswalk.
If you are interested in volunteering to help keep Columbia stu-dents safe, please contact us at 303-690-6570!! Thank you for your continued support!
KnowWhenIt’sTimetoACT(Acknowledge,Care,Tell)ASERIOUSSITUATIONWhen it comes to the mental health of your child, a little infor-mation goes a long way. The first step to helping your child is recognizing that there might be a problem. Signs of depression in children can be easily confused with the ordinary struggles of growing up.
RECOGNIZINGDEPRESSION…WHATTOLOOKFORSigns and Symptoms of Depression:• Depressedmood(canbesad,down,grouchyorirritable)• Avoidingfamilyorfriends• Adeclineingrades• Strugglingtocompletesimpletasks• Nottakingcareofphysicalhealthorpersonalcleanliness• Changeinsleepingpatterns,weightand/orappetite• Feelingsofworthlessnessand/orhopelessness• Constantworryaboutbodyimage• Drugand/oralcoholuseorabuse• Thoughtsofdeath,suicide,orwishestobedead
Moodiness is common in adolescents, but if it lasts for more than two weeks it might be more than “the blues.”
WHATTODOYour role as a parent is to watch for warning signs and seek help. Don’t try to diagnose the problem yourself. If you’re unsure about your child’s behavior, speak to a professional at the school or call your pediatrician. Left untreated, depression can lead to other serious problems, including drug and alcohol use, relationship problems, academic troubles, and even suicide.
THEGOODNEWSDepression is highly treatable. Now that you know the signs and symptoms, you are better prepared to ACT when your child needs you: ACKNOWLEDGE, CARE and TELL.

What’sHappeningintheELDClassroom?English Language Development (ELD) students at Columbia Middle School are busy exploring the weather for several destina-tions. Students are working in groups to predict the weather for various interesting locations around the world using their new classroom set of Chromebooks.
Students are discovering that even Hawaii gets snow sometimes, and some places in Australia never get rain in December, despite the fact that they get amazing lightning storms. Each group will be graded on their group work, script, language and presentation. The students are quite excited about this interesting and challeng-ing project.
ELD has a new teacher! Mr. Clint Pendley teaches three sessions of 7th grade Literacy, and this week, has taken over teaching 3A and 6th period ELD classes. Mrs. Chamberlain will continue to teach ELD during periods 2, 4 and 5.
StaffInterviewMrs. Chamberlain is a very interesting person. She is a staff member at Columbia Middle School (CMS). Mrs. Chamberlain works as an ELD teacher. She has worked here for eight years. The thing that she likes best about working here is the students and staff. Unfor-tunately, she doesn’t like it when students waste their learning time by messing around. Mrs. Chamberlain attended Texas Wesleyan University in Ft. Worth, Texas. Mrs. Chamberlain is from Taos, New Mexico, and she speaks English and Spanish. She is married and has two children. Her favorite hobbies are traveling, reading, skiing and watching Notre Dame football. An interesting fact about Mrs. Chamberlain is that Spanish was her first language, and her mother taught her English before she went to school. Also, she grew up in a ski resort, so went to school four days a week and went skiing every Friday during the winter. I enjoyed getting to know Mrs. Chamberlain. We are lucky to have her working at CMS.
