Greeting’s Everyone....Hope you are still enjoying that wonderful winter we have so far experienced....no doubt the winter
of 2014-2015 will go down as one of the easier ones that have come our way right here in the beautiful Comox Valley....
certainly hard to remember a much nicer one
Well, the 2015 AGM has come and gone and a couple of new faces will be on board with our Executive. For the fi rst time
in several years we actually had a vote for the Director positions and aft er the count, Fred Greene was re-elected as 1st
Director, Dennis Flynn elected as 2nd Director and Tom Witty elected as 3rd Director. All other positions were returned by
acclamation so I will continue in the President’s Role for another term....I thank you all for that privilege. Nettie Webers will
continue as Vice-President and Dianne Bruon will continue as our wonderful Secretary. (Continued on Page 2)

CLUB NEWS
I would like to congratulate our new directors Dennis and Tom, and welcome
them to the Executive table. It was a great AGM and my thanks go out to members
who took the time to join us....you are the ones who make the democratic
process work. I would also like to thank the other members who let their names
stand for offi ce....those included Ellen Whitelaw, Nicki Arsenault and Bob Myles.
A number of great prizes were drawn for as door prizes and the lucky winners
seemed very pleased with it all. Financial reports were discussed, executive
reports were given and all in all it seemed a very positive meeting.....THANKS
once again to those who joined us.
A relatively quiet month of March will be followed by a pretty busy April. The
Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday April 8th so it is
important that the various Committee and Club Reps make sure that deserving
volunteers within their group get recognized....they all deserve a luncheon. The
Evergreen Drama Club will be presenting “Return To 2015” in celebration of
Courtenay’s Centennial on April 22 and 23. On Wednesday April 22nd there
will be a matinee performance at 1:30pm and on Thursday April 23rd an evening
performance at 7pm. And fi nally on Saturday April 25th, it’s Spring Garage Sale
time again, starting at 9am.
I would like to take a moment to congratulate Rose Jacobson on being recognized
as our most recent Volunteer of the Month. She continues to be a very busy gal
and an inspiration to all at the tender age of 94. An excellent write-up on Rose
was carried in the February issue of the newsletter...it’s certainly worth a read if
you missed it. THANKS Rose.
Well, it’s onward and forward......don’t forget that many outstanding functions
and activities will be taking place in Courtenay over the the next number of
months...it’s Courtenay’s Centennial and we would like you all to be part of
it......keep an eye on the local papers and an ear on local radio to keep up with
what’s happening and where it’s happening. And in the meantime could anyone
tell me why “Fat Chance” and “Slim Chance” mean the same thing??????.........
Adios...gk

“Sure and Begorra”, St. Patty Day is
coming up and we’ll be ready with
our great Irish songs. February was a
loving month with special songs for
our Sweethearts. The music as well
as the words can sure express all our
feelings even those of us who can’t
sing quite as well as we used to. We
still enjoy, believe me, I know only too
well – AHEM! Good thing I can still
play the piano – Ha! Ha!
We still meet every Friday morning

March 27th is cancelled. As always
everyone is welcome.

ChoristersAnother good month for the Club
with more new members. The photo
display for March - Ropes - will be
hung at the end of the fi rst week. We
were very pleased with the results and
we hope you will continue to show
your interest by voting for the one you
like the best. We had two education
items in February, the fi rst was on
Low Light Photography and the
second on Problem Solving. We are
learning that light, composition and
photographing some thing interesting
are the key points to success. We are
fi nding the DVD set created by Joel
Satori very helpful in increasing our
skills. Aft er each topic we try to follow
up with the exercise that Joel suggests.
We had two photoshoots, the fi rst to
Nymph Falls which were in full fl ood,
very exciting and the second down to
Fanny Bay to see the sea lions on their
little dock. We always go for lunch
aft er the shoot - an important part
of the morning out! In our forward
planning we have “ whimsical” and
“the Moon” as our topics to hang on
the Lounge Wall in May and July. We
always welcome new folk, give us a
try in the Soroptimist Lounge at 1.00
p.m. preceded by a special session
on Lightroom at Noon.

North Vancouver is getting ready to greet you and meet the challenge of hosting
the BC 55+ Games which run from August 25-29. Hosting such an event is a
major undertaking with over 4000 participants and 1500 community volunteers.
To put this in perspective- my hometown Espanola in Northern Ontario has a
population of only 5000!
These volunteers are charged with arranging the venues for over 30 activities
and sports ranging from water for dragon boating and swimming events, tennis,
pickleball and badminton courts, ice for hockey and curling, lawn for of course
lawn bowling, horseshoe pits, bowling alleys, golf courses, dart boards, archery
targets and bridge and whist cards, tables and chairs. Volunteers must be trained
as offi cials, timers, scorers, referees- whatever each individual sport requires.
Opening and closing ceremonies must be planned and arranging the banquet
with entertainment is a huge task. How would you like to organize the feeding of
over 4000 people?
Let’s not forget our own Zone 2 volunteers: Chair Cheryle Sosnowski, Director
Tony Mayor, Registrar/Membership Alan McRae , Accommodations and
Transportation Bob Reed, Public Relations Corrine Berkin, Sports Chair Paul
Kingan and all the Area Representatives who get us organized and spend a year
planning so we can compete and have fun.
Volunteers are the backbone of this amazing annual event as we get ready for the
28th BC 55+ Games. Why do I volunteer? Why not!!!
Check out the BC 55+ Games website which is being constantly updated with
details about North Vancouver and the games www.55plusgames.ca. The
schedule for the various activities and sports is already posted on the website
plus pictures and results of past games.
If you are a resident of BC and 55+, come and join us! There’s an activity/sport for
everyone. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

1pm, Soroptimist Lounge, Friday,March 13, 2015Just looking at the date makes me
realize how quickly this year is fl ying
by. Already, most of us have seen
small signs of Spring emerging from
the soil. What an exciting time of the
year.
Our Windows based Club meet
monthly and usually start with a
timely topic. This is followed by a
question and answer period, where
all are encouraged to express their
frustrations or joys with the computer.
This can be a great learning time, as
there always a tidbit of info you learn,
that you also can use.
We welcome all, novice or
experienced PC user. Our only
requirements are a current Evergreen

Brazilian Embroidery
We are always looking for new
members and we all enjoy helping
others learn this craft . There are no
formal lessons, strictly learn as you
go, and everyone pitches in to help
beginners. Although some of our
members have being doing Brazilian
Embroidery for quite a number of
years we all remember how diffi cult
it seemed when we started - that
stage doesn’t last long - the needle
and thread quickly become more
cooperative even though there are
always new stitches to learn.
All are welcome to drop in, meet
the members and see what they
are working on - Thursday 9:00
am to Noon in the Craft Room.

Tuesdays,March 10 & March 24,2015 , 4:30-6:15 pm Rotary HallHow quickly the year seems to be
passing. Small glimpses of greenery
from the soil remind me that Spring is
not far off .
Our Club continues to have great
fun under the leadership of Terry. He
does a great job in selecting tunes,
that we all are familiar with, from our
past. We are not adrift in paper as our
music is sent to us via computer, so
we can print it out, or practice right
from the computer screen.
Our aim is to have fun singing and
playing. We are a non-judgmental
group, and invite novice and
experienced players, alike. We
have a loaner uke, which may be
borrowed and taken home for several
weeks, for those who wish to try it all
out, before actually purchasing a uke
for themselves.
Sessions are started with music that
has very simple chords. Most chords
we use can be learned with just a
little practice; of course with a lot
of practice one can become quite
adept, in a short period of time.
Our only requirement is a $2.00
drop-in fee, and a current Evergreen
Club membership.
For more information you can email
Howie at [email protected]., or
Terry at [email protected] . You
can also drop in on our session nights

Want to learn a new game? On
Tuesday at 12:30pm we have an
aft ernoon of fun.
Mah-jongg is played with tiles rather
than with cards, each person is dealt
13 tiles. The basic hand is making sets
of three tiles in runs or sets. The 14th
tile is needed to complete a hand,
so four sets of three and one pair is
a complete hand. Once a person
learns the game there are lots of more
challenging hands to try for. Then of
course the harder to get hands are
worth larger scores.
Instructions are available and we
welcome new members.

owners - if your tablet doesn’t have
an apple on the back it’s not an iPad.
An iPhone Club was off ered but
there wasn’t enough interest to justify
continuing with it. However, as there
are so many features on both devices
that are the same we invite interested
iPhone users to join us.
On the fi rst Tuesday of the month we
focus on new users and encourage
those who need a bit of help with
the basics to come - we hope that
many of the more experienced users
will also come to help and share their
knowledge.
On the Third Tuesday we switch to
slightly more ‘advanced’ techniques
but all are welcome. If ‘new’ users
attend (and you are most welcome)
please remember that we don’t review
basics at these meetings.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES -
Babies, Birthdays, and BusesYou’re about to learn some fascinating facts
about our March Volunteer of the month, Jo
Johnson. And, you might even learn a life lesson along the way! Jo was born a
twin. Jo gave birth to her daughter Colleen at the same hospital that her twin
brother’s baby was born on the exact same day! Those two ‘twin cousins’ are
the same age with the same birthday! Amazing right? Now there’s another
mysterious coincidence involving Jo‘s son named Dan. One day, Dan was
reading a book on his community’s history and came across information on
his great-grandfather. It was reading this book that he learned about another
family coincidence. Dan learned that he shared the same birthday as his great-
grandfather... same day, 100 years apart!
Jo, moved to the Comox Valley ten years ago from outside of Edmonton wanting
to be closer to her daughter. She soon joined the Evergreen Club. Jo says,
“It’s the best club there is. With all of the things going on, there’s something
for anyone!” Jo really got involved with all that it off ers and laughs that her
daughter has a hard time fi nding time when her mom is available now! Jo
particularly loves the Evergreen Mystery and Tulalip Christmas trips. “We have
lots of fun on the bus; a lot of the people that go are the same. You get to know
them,” she says. Jo regularly plays Evergreen Bingo and holds down 6 cards.
She marvels at those who play 18 cards at a time! She loves volunteering to sell
50/50 tickets at the Memories of the War Years shows and does a great job at it!
Jo also plays Whist and volunteers as a runner for the winners. Jo knows many
people from playing Whist in Cumberland, Comox, and Courtenay. For the last
fi ve years, Jo runs the raffl es. “I know so many people from all of my activities.
When I’m selling raffl e tickets, I catch them coming through and they can’t resist
buying from me. If they say I’ve already bought one. I say, yeah but not from
me! But in a fun way, “she laughs “I’m not pushy. “ You’ll also have seen Jo
volunteer at admissions for the Charles Dickens Faire and as hostess at the door
for the Flu Clinics.
Jo doesn’t drive but doesn’t let that get in the way. She feels the buses here are
terrifi c. She says, “You have the same schedule with people on the same bus.
You start by smiling, then chatting, then meeting for lunch. I met my best friend
Maureen that way. She lost her husband and I invited her to the Evergreen Club.
She told me ‘I’m not ready yet.’ One day she said ‘I’m ready’. So I said let’s go
now!” It really makes you refl ect how important it is to have a good friend and a
good club to go to. Thanks Jo for all you do!
