Bethpage / Parent Chapter

February 17, 2016

The arctic blast of freezing weather that struck Long Island subsided into a near tropical 50°day, which brought out retirees for our February membership meeting at the Crest Hollow CC. After the meal, coffee and dessert, the meeting was started with Sergeant-at-Arms Nick Bazzicalupo leading the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for our departed friends and for the well being of the men and women in the service of our country who fight and die for our freedom.

First VP Bob Ripp was called into service to preside over the meeting since President Betty Bohlander is on the mend from a cold and found it hard to speak.

Bob announced guest speaker Nancy Bazzicalupo, wife of Sergeant-at-Arms Nick. Nancy is the Director of the all-volunteer Huntington Township Meals on Wheels program. She started working there as a food deliverer one day a week, 29 years ago. As time went on, Nancy accepted more and more responsibility and, in 2001, took on the position of Director. As such, she oversees approximately 140 volunteers who make the operation work effectively.

Nancy said the operation provides two meals a day, one hot meal and one cold meal. This is done every weekday, 52 weeks a year, to 100 people in Huntington. The only thing that prevents delivery of the meals is weather that is so bad the volunteers wouldn’t be able to travel. The volunteers receive no compensation and each accesses 5-8 people who enjoy both the food and the relationships that develop between the recipients and the volunteers.

Nancy told us that enrollment in the program is for people who primarily live alone, without the care of any family, and cannot get out to shop for themselves. Presently, there is a waiting list as the organization only has the ability to serve100 people. The program is geared primarily for the elderly and handicapped but there is no minimum age nor is there any means-driven consideration used for program enrollment. People are recommended to

the program by doctors, clergy, and personal friends who are aware of the circumstances of individuals who would benefit from the food delivery program.

Each potential recipient is interviewed as to any special needs diet and this is handled by the Rehab center that provides the meals to the program. Since Meals on Wheels must pay for the meals, each person is charged $8 per day for the meals; there is no Federal, State, or local government funding to the program. Nancy said that government funding comes with a pile of regulations that the program prefers to do without. Some funding does come from foundation grants, from personal donations, and from endowments to honor birthdays or individual lives.

A lively Q and A session followed. Nancy was given a round of applause at the end. Second VP Pat Sullivan gave Nancy a $300 Retiree Club check for the organization as a token of our appreciation for their good work. Nancy thanked our Club for the donation and then - in the Bazzicalupo family tradition - told a joke before Nick had his turn at the lectern.

Since the organization is a 501(c)3 corporation, as is the Retiree Club, all donations to Meals on Wheels are tax deductible. The address for donations is:

Meals on Wheels of Huntington423 Park Avenue, East Wing,

Huntington, NY 11743

Bob Ripp made some announcements:** We are now working with Rendezvous Travel Agency; owner Tony Rende has placed a Newsletter ad, which appeared for the first time in the January Newsletter. Tony will be our guest speaker in March. Nick will speak to a trip that he personally has organized for the members. ** We hope to have a speaker from the Vet Dogs Program for our April meeting. ** Bob announced that he heard a report that auditors at the Federal Government Accounting Office have rejected a protest by Boeing and Lockheed Martin and upheld an Air Force decision to award a lucrative new bomber contract to

Club Treasurer Report - Frank Rizzo was unavailable today. Bob assured the membership of our continued solvency.

Scholarship Fund Treasurer Report - Linda Perrota presented the report. It was accepted as read. Linda commented that the date for the June Scholarship Awards luncheon is June 29, not June 22 as reported previously in the Newsletter. Linda also mentioned that John Loonam, who had won last month’s raffle drawing of $255, wrote a check and donated the money back to the Scholarship Fund. She thanked John for his generosity. It is most appreciated.

Travel - Nick Bazzicalupo spoke about the trip he organized for March 22, to the Feast of St. Joseph at the Staten. 11:30-12:30 open bar; Lunch (salad, choice of three entrees, dessert, coffee), followed by a show featuring a Frank Sinatra style singer, followed by a great comedian. Dancing will be available. Nick said that we were not able to get a full bus of people, which usually would mean cancellation of the trip. However, Tony Rende of Rendezvous Travel was able to fill the bus, so the trip is on. Nick finished with his hallmark joke of-the-month, which was a feeble attempt to outdo his wife’s joke.

Northrop Grumman Corp. The plane, a long-range strike bomber, will replace an aging fleet that includes B-2 and B-52 bombers. Pentagon officials have said that the new airplane will be designed to penetrate advanced air-defense systems and strike any target around the world directly from the United States.

Business: ** Bob asked for changes or additions to the minutes as they appear in the January Newsletter. With no changes offered, the minutes were accepted as written. ** Bob commented that dues payments have been lagging this year. They are 50% lower than the number received by this time last year. Please send your dues in as soon as possible. ** Bob also commented that - on the flip side of paid dues numbers being low - he finds that since we put the dues application into the Newsletter starting with the December issue, many on-the-ball retirees write out a check before year’s end. We continue with the application through the early months of the following year so some, forgetting that they sent in the check in December, write out a duplicate check. This now requires the office to call the retiree and ask what they want us to do with the second check: torn up, donated to the Club or to the Scholarship Fund. Most times it ends up as a donation. Bob suggested that. if you think you haven’t sent in your dues check yet, before you do, review your checkbook back to December and verify that you haven’t already enrolled.

Committee Reports:Community Relations - Pat Sullivan thanked everyone for their continued support through donations, which allows us to generously donate to wonderful charities throughout the year. Pat also commented that many meeting attendees arrive early but the doors to the dining room won’t open before 11:30AM, so if you get here before 11:30 just make yourself comfortable in front of the fireplace in the lobby.

Get Well Wishes – Pat Sullivan announced that Get Well Wishes were sent to Tillie Krupitsch. Get Well, soon, Tillie

On February 18, 2016, 14 members gathered for a fun luncheon at the City Buffett, in Brooksville. Past President Hank Mehl and his lovely wife Joan hosted our meeting.

A short business meeting was held. A correction was made to our December minutes, that being the presentation of a plaque to outgoing President John Cornacchia.

There was one Birthday, Hank Mehl (Jan 1), and one Anniversary, Jim & Pat Mulieri (37 yrs).

We were sorry to hear that Bertha Podwys Siegl has been suffering with Shingles since the beginning of January.

We broke for lunch, followed by several rousing games of Bingo.

It was good to see everyone and catch up on what has been going on since the Holidays. Joan Mehl brought pictures of their new grandson, Spencer.

We look forward to seeing everyone for our next meeting, which will be held on May 19, at 11:30AM, at the City Buffet. Our May meeting will be hosted by Gus & Charlotte Krayer.

February 17, 2016

A bright and mild Florida day greeted our assemblage of retirees as they gathered to enjoy a particularly bountiful Suntree Country Club buffet headlined by a prime rib stew and turkey breast. As always, chaplain Ed Romano’s invocation was timely and thought provoking

Chapter Vice President John Lau informed us that President Bob Prais was recovering from surgery the day before but is expected to be back to chair the March meeting. John introduced Jennifer Thompson, a graduate of our own Florida Tech, as our guest speaker. Jennifer’s background in Ecology and Marine Biology led to a key post as Environmental Programs Coordinator for the city of Melbourne. She quickly got our attention as she cited the calamitous drought conditions in California and the deadly contaminated water supply in Michigan. Lesson: Don’t take the availability of potable water for granted. Some startling facts she brought to us include:

• 2/3 of our local household water comes from an aquifer 800 ft. below us - an aquifer that supplies 90% of Floridians, as well as parts of Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.

• The Tampa area drained its aquifer and now has salt water intrusion

• The biggest cost in our water bill is related to reclamation: providing water for irrigation.

• The current dredging of the Eau Gallie River has revealed a layer of muck, 13 feet deep, from a river dredged 10 years ago.

• Chief causes of the contamination of this river and lagoon are litter, oil leaks, mulch, and excessive use of fertilizer and pesticides

• Leaking faucets make up 20% of our city water usage

• Bottled water is a major problem, not a solution, as many suppliers pump from our aquifer, and plastic disposal is a worldwide problem

Ms. Thompson supplemented her well received presentation with a table full of eco-friendly devices for our members: auto litter bags, doggy bag dispensers, water leak detectors for toilet tanks, and many others.

Sunshine: John Lau reported for Chet Emery that Get Well cards were sent to Ed Frantis and Anna Lee Emery. Condolences were sent out to Dick Cheslack on the passing of his wife. Chet reminds us that he counts on members to call him to keep us up-to-date on medical/health situations. He can be reached at 321-254-2562.

Treasurer Bill Waldron reported on receiving a note from Walt Deuster apologizing for missing meetings due to poor health but wishing to be remembered to our members. Bill also gave us year-end numbers for both regular and scholarship accounts indicating we are in a healthy condition as we start the current year. Continued support by 50/50 winners along with significant individual contributions have bolstered our scholarship account so that we are in good shape to continue our new scholarship awards this spring.

Grumman Gremlins: We are glad to see George Graefe back in action after a multiplicity of physical health problems. George reported progress on a number of the aircraft being prepared for the annual air show at Titusville Airport. A busy agenda over three days will have numerous unique fly-bys augment the usual aerial exhibitions including dual shows on one day accompanied by fireworks. The show gets bigger every year.

George reported privately that work continues on the former British Canberra bomber. Research into various UK and RAF archives has indicated that our particular aircraft has had a unique and somewhat intriguing past in support of MI-5 type reconnaissance over Russian missile development sites. We are attempting to enlist the aid of BBC in securing film coverage related to these reconnaissance missions. More to follow.

Bob Watkins led the Pledge of Allegiance and our Chaplain gave the invocation. February Anniversaries: Claude & Joann Rathgeber - 51 Years Birthdays: Bob Falkowski, Irene Falkowski, Marilyn Fink, and Fred Savio

New Members: Anthony LaGrega, Carl Sedano

Visitors: Mike Granato; Nick & Marie Maniscalco; John Byrne; and Rose & Al Cimino

Bob introduced Vickie Davis, Supervisor of the Martin County Board of Elections. The Supervisor spoke about the election system in Martin County and told us about three different ways to vote on Election Day. One was by mail: fill out the form and mail to the office of the Supervisor of Elections by 7PM Election Day or drop off the completed form at any early voting location. The second way is early voting at appropriate dates before Election Day, and the third voting method is to show up and vote on Election Day. Supervisor Davis was very informative about the election process and left brochures for us.

Bob Watkins adjourned the meeting.

Next Meeting: March 17, at the Martin Downs Golf Club.

NORTH CAROLINAEastern Carolina Chapter

Since we do not meet in January, our first meeting for 2016 was held on February 10th, at the River Bend Country Club. We had 25 members and guests in attendance.

Pete McNamee convened the meeting and asked Sergeant-at-Arms Rudy Ramcke to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. He also gave a moving invocation.

Lunch followed and a small package of candies was given to each attendee in honor of St. Valentine’s Day. Treasurer Bob Lamberson, who is in the process of collecting 2016 Dues, presented the Treasurer’s Report. Twenty members have paid their 2016 Dues to date.

The Treasury will be down slightly once the Dues are forwarded to the Bethpage Parent Chapter, but we did receive donations to the Treasury from Evelyn Erath, Ada Peoples, and Ken Wendel and his guests. Artie Miller also forwarded a check for Pat Herrnkind’s 2016 Dues in honor of the passing of her husband Karl.

Bob also read a number of responses we received from members’ spouses and from Organizations,

in acknowledgement of contributions the Chapter made in honor of members who passed away recently:

- From Rev. Ken Gruebel for our donation to the First Presbyterian Church of New Bern in honor of his father, Kennedy Gruebel. - From Patricia Jinks for our donation to the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, in honor of her husband Frederick.

- From Pat Herrnkind and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research for our donation in honor of Pat’s husband Karl. Many of our members are recovering from surgery or various illnesses at this time: ** Ginger Reynolds is recovering from spine surgery, as is Ron Betts.

** Jim Karika is recovering from an operation to implant a pacemaker/defibrillator.** A number of members have renewed their memberships but are unable to attend meetings due to health conditions. Our prayers go out to them all and we hope those recovering from surgery will be well enough to attend meetings soon. Pete sadly announced Joan Willemson heard that Al Northrup had passed away recently. Very little detail of his passing is known at this time although Al’s passing was later confirmed by a friend of his family. Pete also read correspondence from the family of William Willemsen, thanking the Chapter for its kindness and sympathy after the recent loss of Joan’s husband Bill. Chapter Member John Bagby (JB), who is a past commander of the local Fort Macon Sail & Power Squadron, indicated the squadron would be awarded special recognition by BoatU.S, a national recreational boat owners association, during the annual national US Power Squadrons meeting this month.

Tom Schroder was up next; he spoke about the ten good friends and Chapter members we so quickly lost over the past 14 months or so. Al Northrup makes 11. They are surely missed and will not be forgotten.

On a brighter note, Tom entertained us with more of his humorous jokes and stories. Thank you, Tom: we needed that. Bob Lamberson led the 50/50. The winners were: Bernie Kuntz, Bev Nicholson, Kathy Kuntz, and Joyce Leun. Pete announced the birthdays and anniversaries for January and February. We would especially like to congratulate Rosemary Daidone, a chapter member and Dottie Karika’s mother, for entry into her 97th year. PENNSYLVANIA Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter

The Lunch Bunch kicked off the Winter season in January with their luncheon at the Alpine in Honesdale. The Dowds, Rademachers, Zupps, and Sparkowskis attended. For February, we went to the Boat House in Tafton. Here the Dowds, Rademachers, Zupps, Sparkowskis, and Anker Petersen attended.

Since these are really not Grumman Retiree meetings, no shop was discussed. We did have a wonderful time reminiscing about our younger days with our children and the good times we used to have. Many of the old haunts on Long Island were remembered. Some of them are still there, some are gone, but the memories remain.

Sickness: Marianne Sparkowski is recovering from her shoulder replacement nicely. The shoulder does not bother her any more, just the upper arm muscle that was stretched to put the rod down her upper arm bone. It is slowly going back to the shape it was prior to the operation.

Treasurer Fred stated he has sent in the dues money to Bethpage. If you haven’t sent Fred your dues by the time you receive this Newsletter, you are late, and will have to send in your dues and your membership renewal form in order to regain member status and receive the Club Newsletter.

January Birthdays: Marie Dowd, Evelyn Erath, Jeff Lee, Sally Petrusa, Joe & Jan Ryan, and Madelline Sinowitz.

February Birthdays: Joseph Belding, Barbara Knowles, Anker Petersen, Marianne Sparkowski, and Evelyn Stoye.

January Anniversaries: John & Pat Robb.

February Anniversaries: Fred & Alberta Rademacher, and Bob & Judy Zupp.

Our next Lunch Bunch meeting will be on Thursday, March 17th, at Noon, at the Alpine Restaurant in Honesdale. Hopefully we will be able to come up with a new place when we start our new Grumman year in April. Since we are going to the Alpine in March, those attending will need to call Alberta Rademacher and let her know you are coming so we have enough seats. Her number is 570-296-7196.

That’s it for now. Stay safe and see you in Honesdale.

Grumman History – Chapter 37Delivering the Mail (1985)

It was a cold, nasty January 20 when the boxy Grumman Long Life Vehicle (LLV) started the grueling 24,000-mile endurance test in its quest to win the US Post Office contract for 90,000-plus vehicles. The Post Office would use their drivers to take the LLV over the 25-mile course in two consecutive 10-hour shifts per day. The Grumman team could perform any maintenance during the four-hour break.

Whether the Grumman maintainers were trained like an Indy-500 pit crew or not, their work was cut out for them as the loaded LLV entered their shed each early morning. It would have traversed the roadway at least sixteen times, enduring cobblestones, gravel rock, Belgian block, and forty, two-foot by two-foot steel-lined concrete potholes. Cattle and wildlife randomly crossed the road creating further hazards to both drivers and vehicles.

By the end of January, the Grumman LLV, with its 3,100 miles, was pulling away from the AMG (LTV) and POVECO entries as those vehicles experienced undisclosed problems and clocked 2,700 and 2,200 miles, respectively. Would this encouraging trend continue?

In mid-February, Grumman Corporation’s CEO John Bierwirth made the huge announcement that Grumman was restructuring into ten divisions. He stated, “We’re making changes in the way we run our businesses. It’s going to make us more efficient, more competitive, more responsive to our customers, and it’s going to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit that has helped this company grow.”

The line up was: Aerospace Systems (Renso Caporali); Electronic Systems (Robert Nafis); Data Systems (John O’Brian); Aerostructures (Tom McGrath); Technical Services (Fred Haise); St. Augustine (Joe Walter); Corporate Services (Robert Myers); Joint STARS (Al Verderosa); Space Systems (Alex Alexandrovich). Additionally, George Skurla was promoted to President of Grumman Corporation), Joe Gavin became the Chairman of the Executive Committee, and John Bierwirth was Chairman of the Board.

Grumman’s Advanced Systems teams were hard at work pursuing three major U.S. Air Force opportunities: the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF), the Space Based Radar (SBR), and the Joint Surveillance Tracking and Attack Radar System (Joint STARS). They were also addressing the NASA Space Transportation Systems Operations Center (STSOC) opportunity, a 15-year contract that would require the Grumman team to coordinate sixteen Space Shuttle program contractors. There were also efforts associated with winning pieces of the Space Station contracts. All this activity strained engineering resources and had management bemoaning an “Engineering Shortage”.

One approach to future, long-term skills development that Grumman had long employed was the Summer employee family program. The children of employees with 25 years or more of service were eligible for Summer employment. This particular Summer, 650 students had jobs, providing a neat source of financial aid to these Grumman families and setting the stage for engineering students to come back as full time Grumman employees.

Newsflash: April 28, 3PM, the Grumman LLV completed its endurance test. Both LTV and POVECO were not even close as they encountered difficulties. POVECO was resorting to protesting and seeking competitor information. The Post Office asked LTV to replace its frame (a rule violation) as their vehicle had experienced significant structural failures. The Post Office allowed these vehicles to continue as they feared protests if they disqualified them. Grumman nearly protested this rule bending.

Unknown to the Grumman team, Booz Allen & Hamilton, hired by the Post Office to monitor the endurance test, issued their final report. A key sentence was underlined: “The Grumman Technical Proposal Vehicle completed the required testing sequence with no failures of major vehicle components or subsystems.” Grumman’s LLV traversed 24,619 miles with a gas mileage of 20 miles per gallon, beating the revised mileage (downward) requirement of 19.7 miles per gallon.

Page 18: March 2016 Circulation: 2,829 - Northrop Grumman...California - Golden West / Pt. Mugu President, Fred Syrett (805-647-4934) California - San Diego / San Diego President, Pete Belay,

18

Shocking news intruded into the Grumman world when a May 28 New York Times article, “Navy Pays $660 Apiece for Two Ashtrays,” reported that the House Government Operations Committee discovered these outlandish prices for the ashtrays and other items during a 1983 visit to the Navy San Diego facilities. This disclosure embarrassed both Bierwirth and Skurla as they admitted that the intrinsic value of these items did not match the price. Although military specifications, acquisition rules, and low quantities were causative factors, nothing could logically mitigate this value-price mismatch. Grumman’s intensive in-house Spares Awareness review discovered they annually delivered 250,000 of these low-volume, low-value parts (<$3,000) to the three services resulting in management’s decision to permanently exit this aspect of the spares business.

Grumman’s facilities continued to expand as management prepared the company’s infrastructure for the growing business. Melbourne, FL was selected as the home for the yet-to-be-won Joint STARS. The new Electronics Systems Division (ESD) selected a site near Princeton, NJ to house Tachonics, a start-up endeavor to develop and manufacture gallium arsenide microchips as these chips provided significant benefits over standard silicon chips for military space applications. ESD also opened a new plant in Salisbury, MD to manufacture cables and harnesses for Grumman’s myriad of products.

Joe Gavin must have been prescient. After a brilliant 39-year career at Grumman, he announced his retirement on September 30 as good news was coming (with more to come) from many directions. The re-procured Greyhound had a successful first flight and then chalked up another forty-two. Test Equipment Products’ proposal successfully passed a hurdle for the Navy’s next generation test set by being selected as one-of-two to bid on the $2 billion program. And, the Prowler program won a major upgrade that doubled its jamming capability and reinforced Grumman’s leadership in this highly technical and secretive technology.

But there was even better news: the U.S. Army selected Grumman for the huge Integrated Family of Test Equipment (IFTE) program. Then, in quick order, the Navy bought forty-one more RADCOM testers and General Motors picked Great River to design and build unique automotive testers. Then, the big prize; the U.S. Air Force selected Grumman over both Hughes and Westinghouse to develop the Joint STARS. The pace to build the Melbourne, FL facilities suddenly became urgent. One downside: Grumman lost STSOC to Rockwell International, a big loss for Technical Services Division.

The Grumman family of aircraft again demonstrated their effectiveness to the world. On October 7, four Palestine Liberation Front (PLF) terrorists hijacked the ocean liner Achillie Lauro off the Egyptian coast. Denied docking permission by Syria, the hijackers murdered a U.S. citizen. Ultimately, they docked at Port Said, Egypt, where they negotiated safe passage to Tunisia aboard an Egyptian airliner. Ordered to capture the hijackers, the Navy had the necessary tools. Launched from the USS Saratoga, Hawkeyes located the airliner and directed Tomcats to its interception. The F-14s forced the airliner down to a landing at a NATO air base in Italy. The hijackers were arrested. Although never published, Prowlers probably jammed the airliner’s ability to communicate during this operation.

As the year was closing, the Air Force released its Request for Proposal for the Advanced Tactical Fighter, the target of ten years of Grumman investment. The X-29 was the showpiece of this investment and brilliantly demonstrated the integration of its suite of new technologies as it broke the sound barrier on December 13.

Grumman showed it had the technology to deliver the mail in the air and on the ground.
