Hello Faith UCC members and friends
Thank you for the warm welcome Irsquom delighted to be with you in ministry and am looking forward to all that we can do together here in State College and beyond As we transition from Epiphany to Lent there will be many opportunities for deepening our spirituality and faith while also building relationships We will have an Ash Wednesday Service on March 1st at 7 pm Please come and start the Lenten season off right
On March 19th Irsquom hoping to have a special ldquoAmistadrdquo Sunday commemorating our UCC heritagersquos stance against slav-ery in the 1800rsquos with a dramatic 1st person rendering of Sengbe Piehrsquos story the leader of the Amistad captives We will likely have a playing of the movie ldquoAmistadrdquo a night or two beforehand to help prepare you for that worship service It is a powerful movie that connects us to our past as churches in our ancestor denomination helped to free the slaves who were aboard the ship La Amistad It reminds us of the courage and conviction for people of faith to live out their values in creating justice where justice was too regularly being denied It may serve as inspiration in how we can live out our own commitment for justice in our nation and time If you can assist with video projection snacks drinks advertising etc please tell me how you are willing to help By the way if anyone has andor plays hand drums (bongos etc) please let me know ASAP This is a movie and a worship experience you wonrsquot soon forget Got friends or know students who donrsquot like to come to church This will be the exception to the rule
On March 26th we will collect one of the UCC Special Offerings One Great Hour of Sharing The monies for this mis-sion offering will go to help provide immediate response to future disasters within our own nation and around the world So often monies are collected after a tragedy takes place and it takes time for those funds to be used as effectively as they could be One Great Hour of Sharing helps to reserve funds for worthy causes where people are in dire need It has helped with the relief from tornadoes hurricanes tsunamis and other natural disasters It has also helped those who are displaced from their homes for political social or widespread economic reasons Please give generously
During Holy Week we will experience the emotional and spiritual rollercoaster that was Jesusrsquo last week of earthly life Palm Sunday will be April 9th We will then have a Maundy Thursday service at 7 pm on April 13th recalling Jesus gathering his disciples for a Seder meal that was his last supper and the events that played out that evening Good Friday April 14th we do ecumenically and more details on the time and place will be forthcoming Easter is a celebration of the resiliency of the life and values expressed by Jesus in a way in which we exclaim ldquoChrist is Risenrdquo and declare the resurrection power that transforms us all These are powerful times of sacred fellowship and I hope that you can attend all or as many as possible of these extra worship opportunities

A True Story
A foul-smelling ill-mannered obese woman wanders into a chuch at worship She keeps coming sitting alone in a back pew sleeps and snores during the sermon and even occasionally lighting up a cigarette and grabs a handful of cookies during the fellowship hour
The church members and council agonize over what to domdashwith her Finally one councilwoman steps up ldquoIrsquoll take her onrdquo Leaving the pew shersquos occupied for 25 yearsshe moves in next to the problematic guest She greets her kindly (holding her nose) helps her with the liturgy and hymnal and sings with her tut-tuts when she reaches for her cigarettes introduces her to others and limits her to three cookies
Surprise The ldquouglyrdquo visitor begins to disvoer herself as a valued loved human being cleaning up her act showing interest in others shaking hands with eye contact eventually brings newly-made friends from the group home next to the church her social worker call the pastor extolling the positive changes in her patient saying ldquoYours is an exceptional churchrdquo

A New Spiritual Discipline for Lent at Faith
Ever heard of Random Acts of Kindness Or how about Intentional Deeds of Compassion
So often during Lent people ldquogive uprdquo something as a spiritual dis-cipline But what if instead we decided to ldquoadd tordquo how we can do good in the world
During this season of Lent letrsquos commit ourselves to making our relationships kinder and more compassionate Wersquoll have a time during the worship starting with the 2nd Sunday of Lent through Easter (perhaps beyond if we like it) to share vignettes of good deeds that we witness others do andor that we are inspired to do
Wouldnrsquot it be great to hear some good news every Sunday We hope you will be looking for good deeds to share with your church family to help lift our spirits by the acts of loving-kindness you can tell us about
Thanks for your participation in showing how vital our church is in caring for others and making a positive difference in our wider community
Upcoming Laity Sundays
Have you ever wanted to be more a part of creating a worship service that will be meaningful for our congregation
If so you may have an opportunity (perhaps with others) to do so on May 21 andor July 2
Rev Myers will be attending church-related events on those Sundays and we are asking for people interested in creating and leading worship for those days
Please tell Rev Myers if you are interested in serving our church in this way

I am looking forward to meeting with each of you as we engage in this intentional interim period that can inspire and bless Faith UCC As Irsquom trying to settle in and get accustomed to being your new interim pastor there are several things Irsquod like to ask of you
Firstly please wear your name tags every Sunday This not only helps me but all others in the church and especially new attenders or members who may not know you well
Secondly please let me know how you are involved in the church presently and what you might like to do in the church ndash in worship in committee work and in programs and ministries of our church If you have good ideas about what the church could do programmatically or in service to our members the community or the world Irsquod love to hear these things as well If you are willing to head up something we are not doing that would be good for our ministries I want to know If you are willing to participate or help in something but not lead it I want to know that too I want us to all be as involved as wersquod like to be and perhaps even a little more than we think wersquod like to be Churches flourish in spirit and other ways when we all are willing to take part and be involved I want to make sure I know how you see yourself being involved and how I might encourage you in that
Thirdly if you know of someone (including yourself and your family) who needs to be called on Irsquod appreciate you letting me know that Each of you matter to me and to our church We need to take care of each other Lastly invite friends neighbors co-workers students and complete strangers to our church activities We need to stop being State Collegersquos ldquobest kept secretrdquo
Irsquom excited to be here and to work with you in doing great things at Faith UCC and in State College Rev Bret S Myers

CARING NETWORK
May we so live to gain the reputation ldquoFaith is an exceptional churchrdquo
Told by Erica Wimber Avena of East Lyme Connecticutt and retold here by Ernie Hawk for FaithWorks newsletter
