A person we see frequently at the COA said to me, “I like talking to you because you don’t try to fix things.” That was a surprise to me, because I am a problem solver! But what I have learned is that some things need listening and sharing rather than “fixing.” This is espe- cially true for a person who has suffered significant losses of loved ones. We have to be able to talk about our losses and our grief, because our memories keep our loved ones in our minds and in our lives. When we can listen to another person’s memories, we are witness to their lives, and this allows their memories to live on. Why are we so uncom- fortable listening to the loss in others’ lives? Maybe their losses remind us of our own? Maybe we are afraid of saying the “wrong” thing? Maybe we are afraid of reminding them of something that they are trying to forget? What if we cry? Maybe our impulse is to cheer them up instead of just listening? What do people really need? What I have learned is that we do not need to cheer them up if they are not trying to for- get; that sharing memories can be a bittersweet and necessary recollection. Sometimes we do not need to say much, but just be a good listener. Sometimes we might cry, and it just shows the person that their story has touched us, that we do understand. The con- versation is not about US – it is about the person in grief. Celebrating ST. MARCH 2017

Notes from the Director Sometimes it’s hard to know how to fix things, and some things just need time. A person we see frequently at the COA said to me, “I like talking to you because you don’t try to fix things.” That was a surprise to me, because I am a problem solver! But what I have learned is that some things need listening and sharing rather than “fixing.” This is espe-cially true for a person who has suffered significant losses of loved ones. We have to be able to talk about our losses and our grief, because our memories keep our loved ones in our minds and in our lives. When we can listen to another person’s memories, we are witness to their lives, and this allows their memories to live on. Why are we so uncom-fortable listening to the loss in others’ lives? Maybe their losses remind us of our own? Maybe we are afraid of saying the “wrong” thing? Maybe we are afraid of reminding them of something that they are trying to forget? What if we cry? Maybe our impulse is to cheer them up instead of just listening? What do people really need?

What I have learned is that we do not need to cheer them up if they are not trying to for-get; that sharing memories can be a bittersweet and necessary recollection. Sometimes we do not need to say much, but just be a good listener. Sometimes we might cry, and it just shows the person that their story has touched us, that we do understand. The con-versation is not about US – it is about the person in grief.

Notes from the Director (continued from page one)

There are of course lists of “dos and don’ts” when it comes to providing support. You can always say that you are sorry, or you are not really sure what to say that would help. You can make an offer of food or companionship. Simply saying that you have been thinking about them can be a sign of support. It’s im-portant to accept where the person is in their grief, not to try to fix anything, to continue to make contact, to respect their beliefs and NOT to expect that your be-lief system will bring them comfort. Continue to use the names of those who have passed, and do not give a grieving person a timeline for their feelings. It is good to avoid clichés and avoid trying to present the silver lining including, “at least they are not suffering anymore.” Avoid comparisons to your experience un-less they reinforce their experience, such as respond-ing that you also find that music triggers memories of your loved ones. Sometimes people like physical con-tact and sometimes not, so always get permission be-fore offering a hug. Just do your best, and reach out, and you will find it is enough.

Hope to see you soon, Andrea
