March 2018

1 DANA WEST YACHT CLUB

Whether on the water or on land, away or at the club, FUN is certainly the common denominator. As we continue to grow, we’re getting more and more requests for private group parties and special events. The Food & Beverage Committee is eager to answer questions, confirm dates and assist with any special requests. In order to best accommodate everyone during these events and when the club is particularly crowded, we have drafted a few new Policies and House Rules that we ask everyone to become familiar with and observe. When approved by the Board, these new or updated guidelines will be made available in print and online. If you wish to host a private gathering at the club, please ask the Bar staff for an Event Form, or you can download it from our website under At the Club / Dining at DWYC / Event Request. There you’ll also see an online Event Request Form which will simplify the request process.

Your Fleet Captain, Hydee Riggs, did a wonderful job telling our cruising enthusiasts about the great cruise destinations we have planned for the year. Guest speaker, Jim Ferguson, offered some important tips and tricks of anchoring, along with sharing photos and stories about just a few of the amazing anchorages Jim and Kathy have visited aboard Maggie. As always, there are a few unknowns in our early Cruise Schedule but for cruisers and land lubbers alike, there is plenty-o-fun in store. Cruise boldly and return safe with lots of fun memories to share.

I am pleased by the members’ outpouring of positive comments about the great food, the fantastic “vibe” and a broad willingness to support the Board and the club as a whole. Though we continue to push the envelope, we also maintain that very special “secret sauce” that has once again earned us the designation “Best of Dana Point”.

Have you checked out our online Calendar lately? There you can view the many upcoming club events; parties, cruises, races and even guest dock availability. Thank you, Tamara, for setting up these different calendars. Attention Committee Chairs – please remember to add important details for any new or upcoming events. If you aren’t comfortable adding

an event or details, please text or email that information to Tamara or me. We’ll see that it’s added.

Our first cruise of the year is coming March 23 - 25. Please signup early so we can set anchoring plans. The Killer West Band will be playing aboard Sadie Mae on Saturday from 1:00 to 3:00. Even if you can’t bring your boat out for the weekend, you can always dinghy out for an afternoon of great live music and fun. I’ll be aboard Aqueous and will be assisting with getting everyone securely anchored.

Finally, I really can’t thank those of you enough who have expressed your support and positive comments to me directly, and there have been many. I’m humbled by the kindness and generous offers to help. You are what makes this club so great. You are the “secret sauce”.

VICE COMMODORE’SREPORTBy ALEX GELMAN

MEMBERSHIP: As many of us begin the aging process (notice I said the word “begin”) the club authorizes a Senior Membership. If you have been a member for 25 years or longer and have reached the age of 75 years, one is eligible for this membership, which permits payment of 50% of dues while permitting voting privileges. If you request and are granted Senior Membership status, it will begin at the beginning of your next membership term.

Our goal in membership this year is a healthy one. Invite your friend and receive a gift card when he joins. Get two of your friends to join and get two gift cards. See the pattern?

New member photographs are published in the Lines and Bits so that you may welcome them, extend your hand, and/or buy them a drink. Going back decades, this club has been known as a club with the highest member participation…the fun club. No hype. This REALLY is our reputation.

Please welcome the following new boat owner members: Kalika Bowman, Douglas & Susan Chotkevys, Scott & Debbie Malone, Steven & Theresa Weiss

Applicants for Membership are posted for 21 days then voted on at the following board meeting. We’ll be posting the following boat owner applicants: Michael & Christine Wagner, Bruce & Michelle Brown, Edward & Sophie Baldwin, Buzz & Karen Avery, Mary Winn & Mike Pittman

OD: Our OD program continues to sharpen. Unauthorized guests have almost disappeared. Thank you to all our members for following the rules and showing your cards when you enter. Another thank you goes to those volunteers who make up our OD list and Barbara Morand who, like the consummate teacher with a ruler in one hand and chalk in the other, manages the volunteer calendar. If you wish to join, contact us at [email protected].

RESERVATIONS: All of us know that our excellent kitchen and bar staff do an fantastic job. As a result, more and more people want to come to the club and bring their friends. We do our best to accommodate ALL members, but it sometimes becomes difficult to accommodate

NEW MEMBERS

The By-Laws require that new applicants for membership be posted on the Bulletin Board for twenty one (21) days. Any regular member may place an objection against an applicant by submitting the objection in writing to the Board of Directors prior to the next Board meeting.

Dana West Yacht Club operates as a private, non-profit club. In compliance with the California State Liquor Laws, we must have an Officer of the Day at the door, and all guests of DWYC members must be signed in by the member in our registration book before entrance. All visiting yacht club members must present verification, legibly sign our registration book and must wear a guest badge, which can be found in the OD book. The OD must verify individuals, by requesting them to present their card. Most members have their cards ready as they enter.

everyone’s needs. As a result, some rules need to be placed into effect: [1] If you have a party of 10 or more or yourself and 7 or more “guests” please fill out a party form at the bar to obtain club approval for your event. [2] You may hold a table, except on nights of a club “event,” by staying with your table for one half hour to await your guests. To hold a table on an Event Night, please fill out a form to get authority to do so. F&B will call you. At the end of that time, if your party has not arrived the club reserves the right to fill the unused seats. Without permission, we cannot permit “early set ups” prior to ½ hour. [3] Anything out of the ordinary, contact F&B (Pam Northcott, Alex Gelman, Helen Hawkins) Above all, we are friends here. So share a table, spin a yarn and share a drink.

FUNNY: The Yacht Club’s Commodore has a parrot who swears like a sailor. I mean REALLY BAD. He can swear for five minutes straight without repeating himself. One day, the Commodore, a quiet, polite, conservative type decides he’s had enough of this bird’s foul mouth. He grabs the parrot by the throat, shakes him hard and yells “Quit it.” This angers the bird and it swears louder. The Commodore is so mad, he throws the bird into the freezer. At first there’s a terrible racket and lots of cussing. Suddenly, it gets VERY quiet. At first, the Commodore is

relieved to be rid of the bird’s vulgarities. After a couple of minutes, he begins to worry that the cold may have hurt the bird, so he opens the freezer door. The bird calmly climbs onto the man’s outstretched arm and says, “Awfully sorry about the trouble I gave you Commodore. I’ll do my best to improve my vocabulary from now on.” The Commodore is astonished. He can’t believe the parrot’s transformation. Then the parrot says, “By the way, what did the chicken in there do?”

REARCOMMODORE’SREPORTBy TAMARA TATICH

Opening Day season has begun now that spring is in the air and ice is breaking in the harbor! Well, not that it ever feels like snow here in sunny California! We’re blessed in that we sail year round and rely on merely a light blazer rather than wool! Speaking of Opening Day, our annual day is in May, and you may want to see if there’s anything you need to order from Ship’s Store. Don’t wait too long, as vendor inventories get low now that clubs all around the country are opening their season.

As the days grow longer and warmer, it’s time to put away the heavy jackets and refresh your closet with lighter materials. The men’s “1979” tees are in the Ship’s Store and are ready to appear around the harbor, on the docks, when you’re cruising, fishing and racing! We’ve priced them to sell at only $20 for sizes small through and extra large, and $23 for xx-large. You’re not going to find a better deal or finer way to proudly wear your yacht club membership! In fact, you might even want to send one to a friend back east to show them how we roll in Dana Point this time of year.

I’m always looking for new items for your purchase. Please share your ideas, resources and items you’ve seen in your travels. I’m here for you, so it’s important to me that I find what you like.

The Ship’s Store will be open every Monday between between 5:30 and 7:30, and any additional opportunities are posted in the weekly eblast. If you have a special request, please email or call me and we’ll make arrangements to meet up. See you on the water and at the club!

FLEET LOGBy HYDEE RIGGS

We had a great turnout for our Cruise Kick Off meeting on February 13, 2018. We went over the year’s planned events and were fortunate to have Jim Ferguson as our special speaker on anchoring. The photographs of his adventures were beautiful! Thank you, Jim, for your presentation and safe travels to you and Kathy on your next extended adventure! Also, thank you to all who helped get the club ready for the meeting and to Greg and Judy for bringing the delicious pretzels that I ate too many of! If you were not able to make it and you would like a copy of the cruise materials with the calendar of events, please email me at [email protected].

Signup sheets are now up on the Fleet Board, so you can now reserve your spot for this year’s events and cruises including the upcoming USCG Auxiliary Vessel Safety Check, which is scheduled for March 10, 2018.

There will be a small $20 cost per boat for the Raft Up so please sign up and deposit your check in the Fleet Box. I hope to see you there!

The next cruise will be to the Balboa Yacht Club on April 27 - 29, 2018, where we are planning some fun activities. So, please mark your calendars!

I am still looking for people to chair the cruises to Shoreline Yacht Club and Long Beach Yacht Club. Please contact me if you are willing to be a chairperson for these events.

JUNIOR’SCORNERBy TED OLSEN

Although there have not been many visible signs of junior activity in February, it has been a month of planning for the exciting year ahead of us. Each of our instructors require a California Boater Card so they can operate our motorized vessels, the senior instructors are getting their US Sailing certification and each of our boats has been evaluated for needed maintenance.

I am pleased to introduce your fantastic, 2018 JUNIOR BOARD

Commodore - Ben Rightmire: Ben is 18 years old and a senior at Dana Hills High School. He maintains a 3.5 GPA and his favorite class is AP Psychology. Ben has been sailing since he was 8 years old and feels it is the perfect sport as it blends the combination of doing something and doing nothing. He wants to attend San Jose State majoring in Animation His older sister Madison and brother Harrison were also Junior Commodores.

Vice Commodore - Anna Schwartz: Anna is 18 years old and a senior at San Clemente High School and she has a 3.7 GPA. Her favorite class is AP Psychology. Anna likes to hike, surf and of course sail. She has been sailing at DWYC since she was 8 and finds it very relaxing and loves Lasers. Anna looks forward to a major in nursing in college.

Rear Commodore - Hailey Balogh:Hailey is 17 and a junior at Capistrano Valley High School where she holds a 3.75 GPA. She is on the high school soccer and track teams. Hailey grew up sailing on her Poppa’s (DWYC Racing Chair Roger Salway) boat. Her first year at sailing camp she was so scared at first, but then fell in love with sailing. Hailey loves the Laser and wants to continue to sail through college. She wants to be an accountant and save for her own boat.

Secretary - Andrew Schwartz:Andrew is 14 and a freshman at San Clemente High School with a 3.4 GPA. He has been sailing since he was 8 and likes to mountain bike and play the trumpet. Andrew enjoys Lasers and the freedom of sailing as it is an escape from the noise of everyday life. He thinks he’d like to work in recreation. His older sister Anna and brother Trenton sail also.

Historian - Adam Boyajian:Adam is 15 and attends Connection Academy where he has a 3.25 GPA. His favorite subjects are Math and History and along with sailing, he enjoys archery. Adam started sailing at 12 and thinks Lasers are the best. He plans on attending Saddleback College and then moving on to the University of Hawaii majoring in engineering.

Junior Staff Commodore - Peyton Lee:Peyton is 17, a senior at San Clemente High School and has a 4.63 GPA. Her favorite subjects are Science and Math. She plays club soccer, is on the SCHS track team and an ASB leader. Peyton has been sailing since she was 7 and prefers the Laser. She says she likes to sail as it is a place where she can be in control and be an individual. Peyton has applied to many colleges including Dartmouth, Stanford, Harvard, etc. She intends to major in biochemistry and wants to research childhood cancer for a simple painless cure. Her sister Brinna was a DWYC Junior Commodore.

2018 Summer Camp: The dates are: Session 1: June 18 – June 29 / Session 2: July 2 – July 13 / Session 3: July 16 – July 27. Our funding shortfall is causing us to review our Summer Camp including pricing. Unfortunately, we must substantially raise our tuition. However, we are aware we must stay competitive and will try to remain so.

The Board of Directors has been aware for some time of statements and assertions by certain individuals indicating that the Club or the Board of Directors is against the Junior Program. To the contrary, we consider the Junior Program to be a vital part of this club, its history and its future. The Board of Directors respectfully asks all parents, grandparents, members and others concerned about the Junior Program to be patient as we work to improve the Juniors Program. Please disregard any false and inflammatory comments and support the Board’s desire to provide a Junior Program that better serves the children and represents the club in the best light. We are working to preserve and enhance a fun, safe and thriving program for the kids and their families to enjoy for years to come. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact one of the Flag Officers (George, Alex or Tamara).

15 DANA WEST YACHT CLUB

RACEBy ROGER SALWAY

Hard to believe, here we are in Southern California enjoying great sailing conditions and around the USA they are experiencing sub-freezing weather. We held our annual SCYA Midwinter Regatta at DWYC on February 10 and 11. I have to repeat my earlier comment “great sailing conditions” in Dana Point! DWYC had the largest number of race entries in a decade, with 20 competitors entered, four class breaks all sailing a non-spinnaker Random Leg Course (RLC).

Thank you to our Race Committee for being available the whole weekend: RC Boat--Nancy May, Tom Rafferty, Ed Howie. Mark Set Boat--Nancy Ingham and Fish, Tom Valter and Judy Rydburg plus our Race Committee boats Vix’sin (George Hughes) and Island Starr (Bill King). Big thank you to Pat Shoemaker (DPYC Staff Commodore), as Pat continues to give me guidance in our race program. Without this team we would not have had a successful race.

On Saturday we ran two races. We had an unusual wind pattern with the wind out of the southeast at 135 degrees (normally out of the west), steady wind 8 to 10 knots and gusts of 12 to 14 knots. Two races were completed. The first race consisted of 5.1 nautical miles, the second race 4.25 nautical miles.

On Sunday, the wind had shifted to our normal wind direction out of the west, however, the wind was not as consistent with a varying wind speed of 4 to 6 knots and gusts of 7 knots. We selected a challenging 8.4 nautical mile race with 6 marks to round.

DWYC-Race is using a new race scoring program from US Sailing known as “Regatta Network”. This program allows the race committee to score the race from any computer or I-pad, therefore providing race results quicker. But the best feature is anyone can view the results on-line.

Congratulations to our top finishers. This year we offered an all Women’s class as part of the regatta (congratulations to Cindy Wynne), plus we opened the regatta to Aventura Sailing Association, which had four boats compete. Outstanding!

The trophies were presented on the DWYC patio. DWYC Vice-Commodore Alex Gelman, SCYA Rear Commodore & DWYC Staff Commodore Cliff Fellows, DWYC Staff Commodore Helen Hawkins and I presented trophies after Sunday’s racing.

Helen Hawkins and I will be the Co-Chairs of the SCYA 2019 Midwinter Regatta event, overseeing the total event for Southern California. I am honored to be a part of the leadership team for this event.

ISLANDER’SUPDATEBy MINDY SICARD

We started our Islander year with a very enjoyable Installation Luncheon. I would like to thank everyone who came and made the afternoon extra special. There were 40 ladies who attended. We enjoyed a delicious luncheon made by Joel and Fadia. Champagne was poured by bartender Bob and I decline to state how many bottles we went through. The raffle prizes were awarded to Diane Hooper who won the strand of pearls, donated by Joan Limoges and Sunny Cansler won the basket filled with booze.

Thank you all for making the February BNG a big success. Do not miss the upcoming March 6, 2018 BNG. The Tax season is here, and Ron Latin will be presenting on the Dos and Don’ts for successful filing. BNG has been a place to meet other business Gurus and get some referrals and network. I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this beautiful achievement. To all BNG and DWYC members thank you. BNG will have a meeting on March 6th.

All BNG members, who wish to present their companies, please let me know. I encourage all members with businesses to join us. Maximize your membership! Don’t miss out! DWYC members are welcome to bring a non-member guest to attend any BNG event. If you know someone who wants to promote their business, invite them and an RSVP is required. Guests are limited to 3 visits a year unless they show sincere interest in becoming a member of DWYC.

DWYC members will always be given more time and exposure than guests. We hope to see you and your business minded guest at the BNG event very soon. If you are looking for any type of service, consider resources from BNG. We are members helping members.

SAVE THE DATEMARCH 6, 2018 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm (Ron Latin)

HEALTH & HAPPINESSBy CHERYL KELLY

Happy March, everyone! This month, spring begins as does my favorite time of the year, Daylight Saving Time! Remember to “spring forward” on Sunday, March 11.

On the health front, best wishes go to Peggy Gelman, following surgery. Best wishes to Tom Reagan and to Pam O’Keefe. And Barbara DeFabry’s arm is healing after a freak accident. The air bags in Dell’s 23-year-old Porsche deployed for no reason at all, sending shrapnel into Barbara’s arm, resulting in a visit to the Urgent Care.

Debbie Rossback has a spring in her step - with both feet. After 11 weeks, she has given her surgical boot the boot! She is already demonstrating her country line dancing skills at the club.

Doug and Sue Wroten have set sail for happy times. They retired from their jobs at Disney, sold their home, stashed their belongings in storage and bought a 42-foot Manta catamaran in Florida. Destination: Caribbean for the next four years! They have extended an invitation to any DWYC-ers who happen to find themselves in the neighborhood. Bon Voyage, Doug and Sue! Their other boat, Lazy Susan, is for sale in Marina del Rey, so let them know if you are interested.

Maggie Bell completed five baby blankets while cheering during Super Bowl at the club. The blankets will be donated to a group that conducts baby showers at Camp Pendleton.

Condolences to Mike and Jodey Dugan on the loss of their son-in-law. We were sorry to hear Danny Casteel’s mother passed away. Condolences to Jeannie Molinaro on the loss of her father. And Bob “Bubba” Beauchamp, long-time manager of Dana West Marina, club member and grandfather of Kelly Rinderknecht, passed away. A sunset burial at sea was held on Feb. 18.

If you have any happiness or health news to share, please contact me directly at the telephone number or email address listed on page two of this newsletter.
