Andhra University, Visakhapatnam

Andhra University was constituted in the year 1926 by theMadras Act of 1926. The 82-year-old institution is fortunate tohave Sir C.R. Reddy as its founder Vice-Chancellor, as thesteps taken by this visionary proved to be fruitful in the longrun.

Former President of India Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan wasone of its Vice-Chancellors who succeed Dr. C. R. Reddy in1931. The University College of Arts was inaugurated on 1st

July, 1931. The inaugural courses were Telugu language andliterature, History, Economics and Politics. A year later, theCollege of Science and Technology came into being with Honourscourses in Physics and Chemistry. The University pioneered inintroducing many new courses in Science, Arts, Managementand Engineering in the country.

Department of Geophysics

The Department of Geophysics was started in the year 1949with two main branches i) Meteorology & Oceanography and ii)Physics of the Earth. Later branch (ii) was converted into theDepartment of Geophysics with studies on Geology, Geodesy,Seismology, Geomagnetism, Exploration techniques, ResourceEvaluation and Groundwater Resources. At present the threeyear M.Sc.(Tech.) has specializations in Mineral & PetroleumExploration, Hydrology and Marine Geophysics; Research andteaching in all the specialization are going on.

Department of Geology

The Department of Geology of Andhra University is one of thepioneering Departments in India offering a variety of coursesand undertaking research activities in a wide spectrum ofpotentially interesting geological problems of both basic andapplied nature. Started in 1941, in a modest way to impart trainingto students leading to degrees in Geology, it now offers servicesto the industry. The Faculty members of the Department arecurrently engaged in personal research activities in a widerange of topics such as Marine Geology, SedimentologyStructural Geology & Tectonics, Petrology and Mineralogy,Economic Geology, Geomorphology & Remote Sensing,Micropalaentology, Environmental Geology, Coal Geology andHydrogeology.

Association of Hydrologists of India (AHI)

The Association of Hydrologists of India (AHI) was started inSeptember 1981 at the Andhra University when a gathering offaculty and professionals belonging to Geology, Geophysics,Meteorology and Groundwater met.

The AHI was started with the main objective of bringing togetheracademics and professionals engaged in various hydrologicalaspects of water sciences on to a single platform and integrateremote sensing, engineering, hydrometeorology, geophysicalexploration, drilling techniques, reservoirs, water supply, chemical quality, environment and many other seemingly differentaspects.

As a first step, Annual National Seminars dealing with hydrologyin general and a special colloquium on some topical subjecthaving a bearing on the national front or on the local scenario atdifferent parts of the country are organized. The AHI is proud tohave conducted 34 National or International Seminars so far.Five International Seminars, four at Visakhapatnam, one atKhatmandu in Nepal in collaboration with the Nepal GeologicalSociety, were organized and one at Hyderabad in associationwith National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI).

It was considered that while an enormous work is taking placein the country on various hydrological related subject, theprojection of the work and the results to posterity is lacking.Again to provide a common vehicle the ‘Journal of AppliedHydrology’ was started in 1988 and is being published regularlyto bridge the gap.

It was felt that training in emerging areas to professionals wouldenhance their capabilities. A marathon two and a half monthtraining course in theory and field practice in deep geo-electricalexploration was held by the AHI and DANIDA. Detailed lecturenotes along with relevant literature and publications weresupplied. Many other workshops and training modules followed.

The AHI also felt that it cannot isolate itself from the globaldevelopments. The AHI was an accredited member of UNCED.The AHI was also associated actively with the Global WaterPartnership Organization, United States of America GeologicalSurvey (USGS), British Hydrological Society (BHS) andInternational Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS). TheAHI along with National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI)has organized the 8th IAHS Scientific Assembly at Hyderabad inSeptember, 2009. The AHI has organized symposia on “WaterResources & Water Policies” jointly with Association ofExploration Geophysicists (AEG) & Indian Geophysics Union(IGU) under the aegis of 1st Triennial Congress of Federation ofIndian Geosciences Association (FIGA) in November, 2016 atDept. of Applied Geophysics, Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.

AHI – Phani Kishore Award

AHI – Phani Kishore award is being given to the best paperpresentation at the Seminar. The selected young scientist willbe awarded with a plaque.

AHI – Dr. S.C. Puranik Award

AHI – Dr. S.C. Puranik award is being given to a selected postgraduate student / research scholar for the best paperpresentation or an essay competition on a Hydrology topic to beannounced on the spot, to be held during the seminar, and willbe awarded a cash prize along with a certificate.
