Program Meetings Please join us for our weekly Program Meetings where we talk about scheduling, events, and other program related topics for the clubhouse. Tuesdays 8:15 am to 9 am Fridays 8:15 am to 9 am

Cold Weather Just a reminder with the cold weather it is important to call ahead when in doubt. Our policy is that if Des Moines Public Schools close due to inclement weather then so does Passageway and so make sure you call the main line after 6:30 am and/or check out Facebook for any updates. Also remember it is important to dress warmly, and to always wear socks, gloves and a hat whenever possible.

Passageway Shuttle and Member Rides Just to remind everyone that during our Quarterly Meeting we discussed developing a group of members and staff to review and talk about our Policy regarding member rides and the shuttle. We will be reaching out to those members who showed an interest so that we can get together. One thing that we did come to consensus on was our 3pm shuttle ride. At this time we have rarely had any members accessing it unless it is on Mondays or Tuesdays when we have late night activities. Due to this we will not have a 3pm shuttle on Wednesday, Thursday or Fridays. If you have any questions or concerns please see or call Jenny.

Goodwill Bob White

For the past seven or eight weeks, I was pleased to participate in retail training at Goodwill. It was a small class, which was great because it guaranteed participant “buy-in” We started out with four participants but due to family concerns (unexpected) we had one member drop out.

Paula and Nori joined me in taking the class which was

facilitated by Rodney Tomlinson. He is a gifted instructor who brings the fifteen training modules to life by using examples from his experience, whether at Goodwill or other places.

We all passed, but the team camaraderie that developed was phenomenal. We all passed the “Rise Up” online test but Rodney guaranteed we were prepared by offering a 140 question paper test. Goodwill is still going to be searching for help so I would highly

recommend the class to any Passageway members who might be interested.

In addition to the class we got to spend time learning all of the activities that make up a Goodwill work day. These include taking donations, which is uplifting because all of the people who drop things off are so friendly.

We also learn to sort clothes so that we “stock” the stores with quality merchandise. A surprising amount of donations are actually new

clothes. Sorting clothes is orderly. We start out with kid’s clothes (toddlers on up), and then women’s apparel and then men’s clothes. After we hang a rack (all racks have 80 items) the trick is making sure to place the items in the proper place by size. Capris pants were a challenge for me (for some reason).

We also learned how to price wares which include things such as glassware, picture frames, and a variety of other items. They have bicycles and “big wheels” and trikes. They also have computers, monitors, modems, and printers etc. The furniture is priced to move (as are all items) and

again there is a lot of quality merchandise available.

The number one thing I ought to mention is how universally kind everyone is. I include the customers in this statement.

Finally I learned to run the cash register. It is a touch screen system that is user friendly, especially once you stop being nervous.

Goodwill also offers training for maintenance positions as well as culinary and cafeteria and the plan is to have a receptionist training unit in the near (?) future.

Paula will be a store manager in the future, she won’t start

out there but she really helped out a lot. Nori is young and has a phenomenal work ethic so I believe she will do as well as she wants to do.

All three of us earned Achiever of the Month Awards. Again Rodney was a superior instructor.

Icicles Cille Grunzweig

Behold an icicle jungle Twisted sticks of clear tapering ice Dangle from the porch roof Metal wind chimes nearby Sound a melody in the harsh winter wind

During the night I awaken and spy Icicles glistening with hues of blue Light shimmering from the street lamps Set them aglow in the dark The moon smiles her approval of the sight

At midday the sun awakens Offering a prism of light Slowly the icicles melt Freezing temperatures catch the drops And elongate the daggers

In the afternoon The powerful rays of sun Slowly thaw the icicles Dripping like drops of rain Onto the snow below

Children spy the icicles Grabbing sticks jumping up Swinging high Knocking the icicles loose

One by one the icicles plunge from the roof Digging into the snow

The children pick up the ice sticks With gloved hands Licking the freezing ice And twirling them in the sunlight

Mothers call the children home Away from the stripped roof The icicles lay buried in the snow Treasures waiting to be found

The wind chimes whisper adieu

I miss the spectacle of pure ice Hanging from up high

The next snow or freezing rain will Bring them back to show their light And once again be a delight

Pumpkin Spice Article # 3 Mary Cowles-Bennethum

Pumpkin spice is a flavor associated with a homey autumn feeling. The first known publication in an American cookbook was in American Cookery by Amelia Simmons, who was an orphan that came up with mixing molasses, allspice and ginger with “pumpkin.” These spices were just spices in this era, and the pumpkin spice blend started as “pumpkin spice” for a recipe called “Pumpkin spice cake,” which was posted in the Washington Post in 1936. http://chicagoist.com/2014/10/31/pumpkin_spice_rise_and_fall_of_an_a.php

Spice companies like McCormick started blending spices associated with pumpkin pie in the 1950s as “pumpkin spice.” In the 1960s, people who were too lazy to measure out the spices for their baking needs used this blend of spices. “Soon enough lazy cooks were using it to flavor all kinds of dishes normally spiced similarly to pumpkin pie, such as Cream of Sweet Potato Soup,” reported in The Orlando Sentinel in 1995. http://chicagoist.com/2014/10/31/pumpkin_spice_rise_and_fall_of_an_a.php

In 1996, a coffee café in Tampa, Florida were roasting pumpkin spice coffee beans.

In 2003, the food and beverage industry converted the dry spice into a liquid sauce. The product team from Starbucks saw the opportunity to make a lot of money in the autumn months. Peter Dukes is the inventor of the drink called pumpkin pie-flavored latte. This did not go over too well so they put he persisted in finding new ways to get the public to buy his product. The team at Starbucks started to market the Pumpkin Spice Latte for the fall and winter seasons. Strategic marketers found that when people have something all the time they are less likely to buy it. By making it seasonal people starting wanting the drink around the cold weather.

Forbes magazine said, The Latte is in 50 different countries and makes around $500 million a year.

“Dukes did not just create a drink in April 2003; he brought about an entire economy and a widely accessible palette for fall. “The “Pumpkin Spice Latte has become more than just a beverage, Dukes said. It has become a harbinger of the season.” http://chicagoist.com/2014/10/31/pumpkin_spice_rise_and_fall_of_an_a.php

Let’s Get to Know Brian Brian Mehlhop

How long have you been a member at Passageway? Brian has been a member since May of 2017.

What is your favorite thing about the clubhouse? Get volunteer for tasks that are on the board throughout the unit meetings. Brian likes to work side by side with other members. He enjoys working in the snack bar alongside another member or staff. He will be able to help you and bring to you the items that you request.

Passageway 7 Newsletter – March 2018

What is your favorite food? Hot Dogs

How do you spend your free time away from Passageway? Brian says that his favorite thing to do when he is not at the clubhouse is to draw pictures. He likes to draw pictures of other people with him and then give them to the person. He likes to make people happy and so that is why he likes to draw his pictures and give them to the person.

Des Moines Register Article Bob White

A few weeks ago (by the time you read this and thank you for doing so) I was interviewed by Daniel Finney. I was interviewed about Passageway and how important and vital the clubhouse has been in my life.

In that space, and yes, there is a limit on column inches available, I wanted to thank a whole lot of people and places for not just helping, but for understanding.

I was hobbling around, dragging a leg last summer. Without the help of Keystone Chiropractic, I may have had back surgery. Doctors Megan and Adam Ries provide information that is so thorough and yet so simple to use, all we have to do as a patient, is decide on what type of life we want to lead. Healthy people need the information they provide.

Goodwill was the most recent opportunity. The people there were all terrific. From my trainer Rodney Tomlinson to classmates Paula and Nori, Goodwill did everything right. I wish I could do more for them (especially manage time better).

Another critical part of all of this is Mercy hospital. Being a facilitator gave me confidence, although I would like to have done better and can’t wait to tell people about the Better Choices Better Health / Living with Chronic Conditions program. The program is doing great without me. Mary C.B. is currently doing a co-facilitator role, and by all accounts, she is doing well. The program is free, and the information is priceless.

I would not have survived my early years without the help of an intern named Amelia M. She believed in me and most importantly made me realize that she actually cared. I hope she is off running a clubhouse of her own by now.

Mentioning her is not to minimize the importance of Lupita Aquino,

John Morrow, Millie Jones-Cowles, Gary Acklin, and Ron Gilbert. At that time our executive director was Linda Olsen-King.

When Jenny Erdman took over I was absent due to

working opportunities at Bidwell Riverside Center (via AARP) but including Passageway and doing political canvassing for the Braley campaign before working at Homegoods on Jordan Creek Parkway during their opening and roughly a year before physical health issues proved problematic.

Jenny, Millie, Sarah K, Lauren K, Kyra H. and Seth O. all are pillars ofstrength. They are all continuingtheir education (formal) whileworking and learning and helpingbeyond what I might have thoughtpossible. When any of theseindividuals look in the mirror, whatis reflected back is dedication.

Toastmasters – from three different groups: Mike Eilers, Rich Saunders, Vince McCarty,Tracee and Dustan

Saltz Cleon Babcock,Claude Hartman, Anshul Dixit, Ed Parker, Dave Makin, Kerry Richardson, Sally Heidt, Maureen Backstrom and so many more were of enormous help in converting a nervous wreck into (somewhat ) of a polished speaker. Apologies to anyone I omitted.

Two people were of transcendent importance in my discovering Passageway. Lin Phillips introduced me to Brian Dennis who introduced me to Passageway. Both Lin and Brian have been central in helping me understand the art of the job search, and I ought to have generated better results sooner. Brian and Lin also serve along with Jenny, Matt, Ryan, Brad B. (who mentored me since we are both clubhouse members and board members) as well as James, Marcia, E.B. and Angela.

Lin was also vital in my seeking out Grace United Methodist Church. I am very much a “newbie,” and while I am returning to church, I do so with a different attitude, a different perspective than I did when I tried different churches in the past.

I also want to thank every clubhouse member I have ever encountered, whether they ever got to know me or not. It is more my fault than there’s that this is the case. They inspire me. I have it easy compared to some members. I always wish that there was something I could do for them. They have done a lot for me whether they are aware of it or not.

I am currently involved in training via Project Iowa, After everyone I have met has been phenomenal, and I have a total of one class to base that on. The instructor Tony W. is intelligent and inspiring beyond belief. I wish I could do justice to how much I learned in the initial session. Even Passageway has column inches limitations.

Passageway 8 Newsletter – March 2018

Staff Update Julia Collins

In December 2017 I wrote a short article about the staff and their primary areas of work. On February 2, 2018 Jenny Erdman presented to a meeting of staff and members, a detailed chart as to what each staff member’s areas of work were but the areas in which they would like to work in the present or future. I thought this was worthy of an article, so here goes.

I’d like to begin with Millie Jones – Cowles because she wasn’t even in the first article, as she was a staff member yet when the article was written. Millie is currently working on her MA. Millie has been a part of the staff almost a year before, but took a sojourn to Hawaii to explore professional and personal options there. She decided to return to Passageway and got her old job back. She has been working in Culinary Services cooking delicious meals for us for some time, but since she came back she has branched out into new areas. She has started collaborating on the employment meeting and speaker’s bureau meeting (both are listed in your newsletter). She says that she would like to do some public speaking and do more advocacy. Her ultimate goal is to start her own clubhouse, and it sounds like she’s off to a running start.

The other staff members are also trying new things. Kyra H. has been working in culinary services, but a few months ago she started combining this with office services. She’s been interested in wellness for a long time as well as education. Recently she has added multi-media to her skills, helping to write for Passageway Twitter and Facebook accounts as well as posting on Instagram.

Lauren K. also writes for the newsletter nutrition section, and holds down a substantive culinary services position. Lauren is also responsible for starting a weekly wellness meeting. She also chairs the employment meeting and holds down work in activities outside of the clubhouse – as most other staff members do as well.

Seth O. has been working in tech in office services for some time. He has added accounting to his work load and says he would like to continue this. He also chairs the speaker’s bureau and shares some of the outreach gigs with Kyra H.

Last, but by no means least is Sarah K. who works most of her time inoffice services. She also does theemployment meeting, qualityassurance billing, and in addition hasjust completed her MS andcompleted a grueling internship thisfall.

The entire staff participates in weekly program meetings, and each unit culinary services and office services has weekly meetings also. Each staff member does daily e-doc reports on every member assigned to them on that day. They base it on who has interacted with the member the most. Staff members also set up goal meeting for members in conjunction with HMO’s. In addition staff schedules meals a month ahead of schedule.

Obviously everyone has a busy life beyond the walls of the clubhouse and find themselves telling friends and associates all about Passageway.

It seems to me that we are very lucky to have the staff we do.

NOTE: The tasks listed are maybe 60 – 70 percent (guesstimate) of thestaff’s responsibilities. Each taskneeds preparation time. This does

not include late night, meetings with the executive director, quarterly meetings with members and care coordinators, weekly driving assignments and daytime outings with members and a host of sundry tasks on the office services and culinary services board(s) which we (as members) don’t sign up for or which are done with members every day.

NOTE 2 Just because she is not seen as often doesn’t mean that Belle C. is not just as appreciated as her staff colleagues. She drives members to and from Passageway for about ¾ of the day. She also does inventory every day and snack bar several times a week. Thank you Belle as well as Jenny, our executive director, and all the other staff we are so lucky to have.

Tiger Barb Kim Hall

Passageway finally got fish in February, we were waiting for a long time to get fish. Their tank is fun because it has Spongebob’s pineapple house and Squidward’s house. We weren’t sure what type of fish to get, but after much research we came to consensus. The tiger barb are species of tropical cyprinid fish. The natural geographic range reportedly extends throughout the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia, with unsubstantiated sightings reported in Cambodia.

Fun facts of Tiger Barbs

Care level: moderately difficult

Life span: 6-7 years

Eating habits: omnivorous, so can eat all kinds of live, fresh, and flake foods. To ensure proper nutrition, feed them high quality flake food daily.

Lively. Playful fish that prefer to be in schools.

Aggressive! Live well with others of their own, but not well with other types of fish.

Star Trek: Hidden Agenda John Christen Knudsen, Junior Red alert klaxons sounded throughout the entire ship. Everyone was going to their stations in pajamas. Robert Hode went back to the ship’s only shuttlebay. Janet Hopkin and her captain headed for a turbolift. That night, all hands were ordered around as they were surly threatened by the Klingon Empire. This was rare and not part of the curriculum. The captain’s name was River Mathius.

A Klingon outpost was breaking its code of silence. It had a crew of two Klingon men. The two had the power and the authority to call

reinforcements to the border by pressing a single button. The Holt Jerome was surly in lots of trouble. It was in serious danger considering its crew was almost all children. The captain arrived on the bridge with one order – the power had to be turned off. They had to play dead.

It was time for Captain Mathius to teach the crew its first lesson on the cadet cruise. He asked the bridge officers what they knew about the ‘first duty’ of a Starfleet officer. He was met with confusion. The first duty states that a cadet must always be honest. Then one cadet left the bridge in a huff. The captain asserted that only half his class would graduate, statistically. The Klingon outpost spared them – they were facing children.

One Hello Jaymie Underkofler I took the time to say Hello To Someone that I didn’t know

To Someone who was walking by A look of sadness in her eyes

And when she smiled back gratefully And said a warm hello to me I realized my little gift had given both of us a lift

You never know just who you will meet Throughout your day on any street.

People just like me and you with loneliness and problems, too

Yet life is always better When we take the time to be a friend. To someone we do not even know

And all it takes is one Hello

Sleep Smarter Lauren Kern

Everyone has heard the old sayings “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise” and “The early bird catches the worm”. But how do you actually get to sleep early and sleep well? Here are some tips for creating a great sleep routine. Everyone is different and some tips may not work the same for different people. Find what works for you.

On average, we need about eight hours of sleep. The most crucial hours to be asleep are between 10 PM and 2 AM. This time period is like a bonus for sleep. In order to give yourself an hour for your bedtime routine, it’s recommended to start with your wake up time and count back 8 hours. This is the time you should be in bed, falling asleep. Count back one more hour and this is when you should start your bedtime routine. For example, if you wake up at 6 AM, you should start your bedtime routine at 9 PM and be in bed by 10 PM.

Quick Tips for PM Routine: - Avoid screens (tv, computer,

tablet, cell phone)- Dim the lights – lamps are

great!- Use aromatherapy - lavender,

jasmine, and vanilla help withsleep

- Meditate – not sure how, check out guided meditationthrough free apps (Calm orHeadSpace) or YouTubevideos

- Reflect positively on yourday: “what made today awin” or “what good did I dotoday”

- Make a “dump list”, writedown anything andeverything on your mind toclear your head before sleep
