Rabbi’s Message: I can’t think of a better way to spend Shabbat Hagadol than by attending and/or supporting the teen “March for our Lives on March24thin our nation’s capital. Nor can I think of a better way to launch the first Next Big Thing funded by a most generous bequest from Rabbi Stanely Yedwab z”l who served Temple Beth Am for 39 years. Rabbi Yedwab left it up to me to devise the “Next Big Thing.” After much thought, I decided I wanted to create a High School without Walls for Beth Am Shalom, so that our teens could continue to learn about our tradition’s heritage and values outside the classroom by visiting important historic and educational sites. So…what will YOU be doing at temple this March? Sooo much is going on, my head is spinning. In a good way, of course. PURIM this year… wow, just wow. Thanks to Cantor Arlyne Unger, we have a NEW Purim Schpiel. You can catch it twice. First will be February 28, Erev Purim, 7pm. If you should miss that, don’t forget Sunday, March 4, the community wide Purim Carnival will be held at Beth Am Shalom and we will have the Schpiel before the Carnival. Let’s not forget we have many B’nai mitzvahs this year. Everyone in the congregation is always invited to attend the services on various Saturday mornings at 10:00am. Passover this year. We have the 2nd annual Womens Seder, March 22. Please call with your reservations. All women, of all ages, are welcome. Then we have the 2nd night Seder. Due to the nature of the Seder meal and the arrangements with the caterer, we MUST have your reservations by March 9, although the event is March 31. Please do not delay sending your reservations. EVERYONE OF EVERY AGE IS WELCOME. As always, the doors are open, come in. Arlene Gaona [email protected] President

Reform Jewish teens are no exception: they are making plans to show a strong Reform Jewish presence at the “March for Our Lives” in Washington, D.C. and related marches across the country on March 24.

Help the Reform Movement support these passionate young people in their fight to reduce gun violence

In Washington, D.C.:

• Local Reform congregations are working on providing food and lodging for teens and young adults (and their supporters) who want to attend the March for Our Lives on Saturday, March 24.

• There will be a Reform Jewish Community event that is open to everyone immediately before the March for Our Lives led by our youth leaders.

• A Reform temple, Washington Hebrew Congregation will host a special Shabbat Worship Service and Social Justice Concert on Friday night, March 23.

Sign up for updates about the Washington, D.C. March for Our Lives and other gun violence prevention efforts by visiting nfty.org

Across the United States:

• Some congregations in cities hosting Marches will host Shabbat Morning Services for those attending Marches.

All of these actions require significant resources. The Union for Reform Judaism’s NFTY: the Reform Jewish Youth Movement is providing logistical, financial, and communications resources, as well as other forms of support. Please donate now to support these efforts by visiting nfty.org or sending your donation to Beth Am Shalom and mark the check NFTY March.

Judaism demands that we pursue justice. The time is now.

CEMETERY COMMITTEE Dear Friends, We at Beth Am Shalom are writing you today in regards to our cemeteries, Beth Olam Memorial Park in Lakewood and Toms River Jewish Cemetery in Toms River. As you are well aware, Beth Olam Memorial Park is in dire need of restoration and beautification. Though much has been done to try and maintain this cemetery, it just hasn’t been enough with the limited funds we have. It has been decided that those of us with loved ones buried there deserve a more serene environment. With this in mind, our cemetery committee has moved forward with a more aggressive plan to rejuvenate the grounds:

1.Grave Stones that have sunk below grade level are being raised to ground level. 2.Starting in late September, a fertilization & seeding program will be started. 3.Irrigation system has been fixed and watering times adjusted to meet needs.

The above courses of action are quite costly and will soon deplete our cemetery fund. In order for us to continue to upkeep our cemeteries and maintain the need of our dearly departed…WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! Funds are sorely lacking and the cemetery Committee is asking for your help in accomplishing our goals. We are asking for donations to be made to the cemetery fund, in multiples of $18, chai! These donations can be made on a monthly basis or in one larger amount to be specified to the cemetery fund. It is up to you and up to us to make the cemetery a place to be proud of. Thank you for your generosity.
