The highlight of February though was our School Councils annual fundraiser —Winter Wonderland—and we sincere- ly thank our community for its incredible support and generosity. Students were very enthusiastic all month long and had a great time at the Winter Wonderland dance. School fundraising makes a real difference for our students, and enables us to invest in a wide range of tablets, laptops, computers, robotics, and pro- gram enhancements that enrich learn- ing for our students. As always, we thank our School Council, and we want- ed to remind our community that every- one is welcome (and encouraged!) to become involved in School Council. The next School Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 26th at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. Spring is probably the busiest time for the school! Aside from planning for the 2020-2021 school year (please keep us informed of any changes to your childrens enrollment for next year!) we have many plans underway across a variety of programs and supports within the schools including a student-led Games Club, student learning around Mental Health and Wellness, and new leadership opportunities for our stu- dents to contribute their voice to the school! We wish everyone in the Bayview Glen P.S. community a wonderful month ahead and an safe and enjoyable March Break.

How do you react when you see a math problem? Do your palms start to sweat, does your mind go blank, do you start to feel physically ill? Approximately one third of children feel anxious when doing math - and the worrisome part is, this anxiety has been found in children as young as 5 years old! We need to help children see that math is more than just right and wrong answers or sets of facts and rules, so they can find the joy and beauty in it.

Here are some tips for how you can help your child develop a positive relationship with math:

Watch how you talk about math at home - when children hear adults talking about how hard math is or that they do not like math, they adopt these feelings and these can be really large obstacles to overcome

Help your child see that math is an important part of everyday live

Play games that promote math learning (see Resource for Supporting your Child http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/Math/Pages/default.aspx)

Encourage curiosity

Avoid math tasks that involve time constraints (e.g., Mad Math Minutes)

Help your child see that mistakes in math are not bad but are opportunities to learn

Ask them questions that focus on processes and that do not necessarily have a single right answer

Activity:

Look at this picture with your child and discuss the following questions:

What do you notice?

What do you wonder?

From there, choose one question that they want to know the answer to, and work together to solve it. To find out what your child will learn in math this year or to find other fun activities that you can do together as a family, please visit http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/Math/Pages/default.aspx. Monthly Wellness Tip

We want to especially mindful of germs this Winter (and all year round!) We continually rein-force practices to minimize the transmission of germs and keep everyone in the school com-munity healthy. Let’s work together to stop the spread of germs and keep everyone healthy through the Spring season! This month’s Wellness Tip focuses on ...

Handwashing Children share many items throughout the school day and at home including books, toys, computers, puzzles, sports equipment and many other objects they come into contact with. Sharing can spread germs that can cause sickness, especially during cold and flu season. Correct handwashing is the best way to prevent the spread of infection. Follow these simple steps to help stay healthy: Sneeze into the bend of your arm rather than into hands Wash hands before eating and after using the bathroom, nose blowing, sneezing, handling

garbage, touching animals, playing outdoors and visiting someone who is sick Wash hands whenever they look or feel dirty. Together we can take simple steps to help stop the spread of infection! We’ll continue to encourage our students wash their hands properly at school! Read more about preventing infections and proper handwashing at York.ca/infectionprevention
