General Overview

ELA CBT is administered over two days. It is a combination of multiple-choice, short-response, and extended-response questions just like the paper/pencil test.

No time limits. According to NYS, most students should take around 90 minutes to complete the test but they can have the full day if they do not finish in the time set aside for testing.

The test will be taken on their Chromebooks. Students are not logged in, instead they log in to a locked appli-cation. This means the students have no access to other sites or resources while logged into the test. This is similar to NWEA MAPs.

Each student has their own login username and password. The passages and questions are sent to each student in random order.

No more bubble sheets for multiple choice. Students just click on the correct answer.

Short answers are typed. There is not a spell-check option.

Students are given scrap paper to take notes or plan as they read and write.

Students are prompted to review unanswered questions twice before submitting.

Ways to Support Students at Home

Keep students reading at home. We encourage at least 20 minutes per night.

Offer time for students to engage in digital reading at home (wonderopolis.org, Desti-ny digital books on the library website, library links to online databases).

Allow opportunities for students to type as a form of communication.

Resources

Visit nysed.gov and click on the “Assessments” tab to view the state information about computer-based testing.

Preview the online sample test by visiting: ny.nextera.questarai.com/tds/#practice. The sample tests are also linked to the assessment tab on nysed.gov.

I hope this information has been helpful. If you have questions about testing programs,

policies, and procedures as they pertain to any of the upcoming assessments, please con-

tact me.

Sincerely,

Lisa M. Farina

We’ve had an amazing start to the month of March. Students at Vollmer continue to exhibit the

Vollmer values and strive to be responsible, respectful, trustworthy, caring and ready to learn.

Throughout the month of March we will be focused on the character trait of kindness. Kindness

means you are concerned about other people. Kind people think about another person's

feelings and not just their own, they help someone who is in need, and they are kind even

when others are not.

On March 20th we will have our PBIS assembly! At this assembly we will share an exciting plan

to cultivate kindness here at Vollmer. Students will participate in creating a school wide

kindness link that connects every classroom throughout the building. Students can earn a link

by being kind and showing kindness. Each class will connect their links and then hopefully earn

so many links that they connect between classrooms and then connect around the entire

school!

Join me in congratulating our Students of the Month and Bus Riders of the Month! These

wonderful students have earned this acknowledgement by exhibiting the PBIS character traits

here at Vollmer and on the school bus.

Vollmer Health Office News from Mrs. Gerbino

A large number of students have been experiencing Flu A or Flu B, stomach bug, upper

respiratory infections, and strep throat. The school district recommends that a child remains fever

free for 24 hours without fever reducing medications before they return to school. Many children

feel better after they vomit, but they are still contagious for a full 24 hours, and still susceptible

for picking up other illnesses. With strep throat, a child must be on an antibiotic for a FULL 24

hours (usually 2 doses) before they return to school.

Please help us keep Vollmer a healthy place to be, so if your child has any of the following

symptoms, your child is too sick for school and should stay home:

• If they have a fever of 100.0 or more right now

• If they have had a fever above 100.0 in the past 24 hours

• If they have vomited in the past 24 hours

• If the management of a runny nose takes a lot of time

• If a persistent cough interferes with concentration

• If they have honey colored crusted sores around their nose or mouth

• If they have a rash accompanied by a fever

• If they are too tired to play at their usual activities

• If their interest in eating has significantly declined

• If one or both eyes are red, watery, itchy or draining

• If they have been on medication for an infection for less than 24 hours

Generally, students need 24 hours of recovery after these symptoms go away. If you are in doubt,

please call the Health Office at 359-5560. If your child has a persistent cough, high fever, a very

sore throat or a worrisome rash, you should contact your physician.

Vollmer Physical Education News You may have heard from your child about an exciting activity they have been doing in physical education class at Vollmer. The TRX System, also known as Total Resistance Exercises, was developed by former U.S. Navy SEAL Randy Hetrick. TRX is a form of suspension training that uses body weight exercises to develop strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously. At Vollmer, we have 24 TRX Suspension Trainer straps anchored to the walls. A TRX strap is a performance training tool that leverages gravity and the user’s body weight to complete exercises. This form of exercise allows each child to challenge him/herself to an individually appropriate work out.    We have taught students about safety with the bands, repetitions and sets. We will have students continuing to use the TRX bands during our upcoming gymnastics unit. You may want to view TRX videos on Youtube to get a better idea and understanding of the capabilities with the bands.
