From the Pastor’s Desk

Earlier this week, the Holy Father had this to say about preparing to celebrate these past few days, the holiest days of the year:

“Dear Brothers and Sisters: As we prepare to celebrate the Paschal Triduum in this Holy Year of Mercy, we are invited in a special way to contemplate the revelation of God’s infinite mercy in the events of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection. Tomorrow, Holy Thursday, Jesus gives himself to us as food and, in the washing of feet, teaches us the need to serve others. On Good Friday, in the mystery of Christ’s death on the cross, we contemplate that undying divine love which embraces all mankind and summons us in turn to love one another in the power of the Spirit. Holy Saturday, the day of God’s silence, invites us not only to solidarity with all who are abandoned and alone, but also to trust in that faithful love which turns death into life. These, then, are days which speak to us powerfully of God’s love and mercy. In one of her visions, Julian of Norwich hears the Lord say that he rejoices eternally because he was able to suffer for our sake out of love. Let us prepare then to celebrate the coming days with gratitude for this great mys-tery of God’s mercy, poured out for us on the cross of our salvation. “

It seems that this is first and foremost about remembrance, and the lasting significance of events long past in history. We tend to marvel at celebrating a 50 or 100 year anniversary of anything. And here, the Church throughout the world celebrates events that took place over 2000 years ago, in an obscure corner of the long-ended Roman Empire, remembering and re-telling this story as if it matters. And it does matter, because it is our story. That story of the first Eucharist, and the only Crucifixion that redeemed the world, and the night of dark-ness being shattered by the brilliant light of Easter is truly our story. It is right that we remember.

It is also about promise, a promise heard from the lips of none other than the Son of God. On that night before he died, he said to those gathered, “I will not leave you orphan”. And ever since the Church has been cele-brating and living in the real and abiding and healing and comforting presence of Him who did not leave us be-hind. He has set up his tent in our midst, he has made his dwelling among us.

Every year, on this Easter weekend, we renew Baptismal promises. We recall that sacrament which be-gan our journey of faith. St. Paul teaches that this sacrament joins us to these events just celebrated, to the death and rising of our Lord Jesus Christ. In him, we are saved, in him we find new life, in him death is overcome and in him, life triumphs forever. He is risen indeed! Alleluia!
