reported missing since last weekend. The staff at East have been very concerned about the lack of media atten-tion this story has been given, considering it is now Am-ber Alert. We all know that if this was a missing student from any surrounding town it would be front page news. The Rochester Police Chief has called her disappearance “suspicious” and said investi-gators do not believe Butler is a runaway. Butler lives at 15 Lynchford Park. She is five feet tall, about 125 pounds and was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt, jeans, gray and pink Nike sneak-ers and gold earrings. Family members have been posting fliers with that information across the city. The last tie her mother talked to her Larie told her by phone about 3:30 p.m. Saturday (March 24) that she loved her and a friend was go-ing to pick her up and take her to the marketplace Mall. She may have been in the area of the mall between 3 and 4 p.m. and in the area of east High between 6 and 7 p.m. that same day.

Buffalo Attorney John V. Elmore has the rare and unique distinction of being

named by both the Governor and Attorney General to two important positions. He currently serves by ap-pointment of Governor An-drew Cuomo as chairperson for his 4th Department Ju-dicial Screening Committee which covers much of Western and Central New York and the Southern Tier. He also serves as a member of his Statewide Judicial Screening Committee as well. He was most recently se-lected by New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman to serve as an arbitrator on a panel created to hear claims of excessive force and police misconduct in Ni-agara Falls after the Attorney General’s office filed a lawsuit against the Niagara Falls Po-lice Department. It is this position that should be of particular interest to City of Buffalo residents. The three -member arbitration panel, which includes Mr. Elmore, was created after an agree-ment was reached between the NYS Attorney General’s Office and the Niagara Falls Police Department in response to citizens claims of exces-sive force and police miscon-duct primarily against African Americans. Uniquely qualified to serve, Mr. Elmore, a Buffalo At-torney with the law firm of Brown Chiari LLP, was pre-viously the chairperson of the New York State 8th Judicial District Attorney Grievance Committee. misconduct in the eight most western counties of the state. Elmore lives and works in the City of Buffalo, a place which has a history of police brutali-ty and misconduct against mi-norities; at one point ranking in the top 20 for misconduct of police officers in forces of less than 1,000. Yet this siz-able upstate metropolitan area has nothing close to what its neighbor, Niagara Falls, has in place for the people. Essentially it is a win-win situation. An individual who may have been abused, and not able to hire a lawyer, or find a lawyer to take their case in the Falls, can present their case - not in front of an all White jury which is the reality in most cases – but before an independent three-man panel which has the power to award momentary damages. It is an historic opportunity for fair-ness and justice. Buffalo has nothing like it because essentially, the At-torney General has not filed a lawsuit against Buffalo. And there are no Black leaders calling for it. In Niagara Falls, it was Niagara County Legislator Renae Kimble (who recently stepped down), acting as a concerned, private citizen for several years, who pushed for reform at the police depart-ment. Ultimately the attorney General (who was Cuomo at the time) was asked to come in and investigate complaints that the City of Niagara Falls primarily discriminated against African American res-idents, In light of his findings. It was determined, and agreed, that Niagara Falls police de-partment needed to revise its practices and implement

changes to prevent excessive force and improve community relations. Ms. Kimble hailed the agree-ment for including “real re-form” as well as “an opportu-nity for those harmed by past practices to be heard.” Bill Bradberry, President of the Niagara Falls Branch NAACP commended then Attorney General Cuomo on what he called “this very im-portant civil rights issue,” stat-ing, “all city residents should be able to trust police officers to be fair and effective.” The investigation and the settlement is historical and an innovative approach for citi-zens to voice their complaints of police abuse and represents a true victory for the people. Attorney Elmore, as one of three neutral arbitrators, is very much a part of that his-tory. The Cities of Buffalo and Rochester and surrounding ar-eas, would do well to follow Niagara Falls’ lead.

"They Killed My Son, And Now They Are Trying To Kill His Reputation"Trayvon s Family Lashes Out at Police Attempt to ‘Demonize the Victim’ Trayvon Martin's family lashed out at Florida authorities on Monday, claiming officials are attempting to smear Trayvon in an effort to bolster George Zimmerman's claim he was acting in self-defense when he shot the unarmed 17-year-old last month."Even in death, they are still disrespecting my son, and that is a shame," Martin's father, Tracy, flanked by Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, said at a press conference in Sanford, Fla., where 25,000 were expected to attend an afternoon rally to protest the police's handling of the case.The family's attorney, Ben Crump, said Martin's son had been suspended for 10 days from his high school the day he was shot after traces of marijuana were found in his book bag. Martin's father had said previously Trayvon was suspended after being found in an unauthorized area at the school. "If he and his friends experimented with marijuana, that is completely irrelevant to George Zimmerman killing their son on the night of Feb. 26," Crump said. "Law enforcement is attempting to demonize and blame the victim." New Black Panther Party Offers $10K Bounty For George Zimmerman Over the weekend, members of the New Black Panther Party showed just how tense the situa-tion in the Trayvon Martin shooting has gotten: They offered a $10,000 bounty for the capture of George Zimmerman, who shot and killed the unarmed teenager.The Orlando Sentinel reports that Mikhail Muhammad announced the reward during a protest on Saturday, and when a Sentinel reporter asked if he was inciting violence, Muhammad said, "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."

Macky Sall Senegal election win ‘example Senegal’s presidential election, which saw the incumbent con-cede defeat peacefully, has been hailed as a “great victory for democracy” in Africa. President Abdoulaye Wade has accepted that he was defeated by Macky Sall in Sunday’s run-off. The African Union said Mr Wade’s concession showed “ma-turity” in the country’s democracy while the European Union called Senegal a “great example”. Mr Sall addressed thousands of cheering supporters in the capital, Dakar. He promised to be a president for all Senegalese people.The president-elect, 50, said the poll marks a “new era” for the country.His rival’s bid for a third term in office, after 12 years in power, sparked violent protests which left six people dead.Official results from Sunday’s election are expected within two days.A spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ash-ton said it was “a great victory for democracy in Senegal and in Africa”, reports the AFP news agency.“Senegal is a great example for Africa,” he added.The election comes just days after a military coup in neighbour-ing Mali.Senegal remains the only country in West Africa to have never undergone a coup. Coup in Mali The leader of a coup in Mali has told the BBC he is in com-plete control of the country and says his “door is open” for peace talks with Tuareg rebels. Cap Amadou Sanogo told the BBC he overthrew the govern-ment on Wednesday in order to restore security. He has prom-ised to hand power to an elected government once a northern Tuareg rebellion has been put down. The troops behind the coup accuse the government of not giving them enough arms to tack-le the uprising. The Tuaregs have forced the army out of several northern towns in recent months.Capt Sanogo said in a BBC interview that his priority was to protect civilians and property, and order was being restored.“People are starting with their daily life: the market is open, transport is working now and I believe I’m getting closer to what I promised my people,” he said. President Amadou Toumani Toure’s whereabouts remain unclear, but he is still believed to be under the protection of an elite loyalist squad.Capt Sanogo called the Tuareg rebels “our brothers” and invited them to peace talks. “I want all of them to come to the same table right after this interview. My door is open,” he said. “We can talk about and work out through the peace process.”

Obama Administration Blocks Texas Voter ID Law The Obama administration blockTexas new law requiring voters to show government-issued photo identification at the polls, escalating a partisan dispute over voting restrictions.The U.S. Justice Department used its power under the Voting Rights Act to halt the Texas law, saying in a letter to the state today that the measure may disproportionately harm Hispanics. The department in December blocked a similar law in South Carolia. Democrats have objected to the voter ID laws as im-pediments to minority voting while Republicans have said they protect the integrity of elections. Republican officials in Tex-as, one of eight states that passed voter identification laws last year, said the administration has no valid reason to challenge the measure.The Justice Department’s decision isn’t final. The Sentinel also reported that the group "called for the mobilization of 10,000 Black men to capture Zimmerman." The New Black Panthers were in Sanford Saturday for the group’s third protest in the past two weeks over the fatal shooting of the Miami Gar-dens teen. The group has consistently called for Zimmerman’s ar-rest and threatened to find and detain him if police were not willing to do so. But group members didn’t call for the mobilization of thousands un-til Saturday. On Saturday, Muhammed led the small group in chant-ing “Justice for Trayvon!” and “Black Power!” “If the government won’t do the job, we’ll do it,” Muham-mad said, leading his group of eight party members in chants like “freedom or death” and “justice for Trayvon” while making the iconic gesture of raising their fists into the air.The party members said they are tired of the inaction of government officials — from Sanford city officials up to the Governor — and accused them of lying and delaying justice.

Thousands in city join Million Hoodie March in Philly Several thousand people marched Friday night from 30th Street Station to JFK Plaza as part of the "Million Hoodie March" to support the family of Trayvon Martin, a black Florida teenager shot to death last month by a Neigh-borhood Watch volunteer. The march along John F. Kennedy Boulevard began at 7:17 p.m. - the time when po-lice found Martin's body Feb. 26 at the scene in Sanford, Fla. "We're trying to bring aware-ness about the injustice that's going on in Florida, the streets of Philly, and other cities in America," said Jason Moody, 32, of #OnTheCornerstone(d), an online radio station and community-organizing group that put together the march.Many of the participants wore hooded sweatshirts in support of Martin, who was wearing one at the time of his death.Police said about 2,500 peo-ple started the march, which swelled as it proceeded into the heart of Center City. Fi-nal police estimates for the number of participants ranged from 5,000 to 8,000.No arrests were reported. Popcorn - The New Super Snack! Eating healthy just got a whole lot crunchier. A team of researchers from the University of Scran-ton in Pennsylvania has found that popcorn contains more antioxidants than other fruits and veg-etables. Antioxidants are substances that many scientists believe help protect against cancer and heart disease. LACKAWANNA’S OWN! Kool & The Gang performed to a sold out audience at First Niagara Arena recently, opening up the show for Van Halen. That seems like a weird combination but both bands are party bands in their own genre of music. The audience enjoyed Kool & The Gang along with new lead singer Buffalo's own or I should say Lackawanna, NY Sean Davis. The 50 minute set was fast paced with opening song "Fresh", right into "Emergency" to "Misled"' that the 12 member band really took off and turned the concert out. Sean's gui-tar solo on "Misled" were excellent along with his fine vocals that almost replaced the silky smooth sound of James J.T. Taylor. Sean slowed it down a bit on "It's Too Hot," but came right back with old school fa-vorites "Hollywood Swinging," and “Jungle Boogie” that featured rapper Fresh Akeem performing and Tenor sax man Michael Redd doing a cart wheel across the stage after his thun-drous solo performance. "Get Down On It", Ladies Night", and closing with "Celebrate". Special Report on why Erie County should refuse to Renovate Ralph Wilson Stadium Part 1of a 2-Part Series

This year western New York is once again faced with the end of our beloved Buffalo Bills lease to play its games in forty year old Ralph Wilson stadium. The first lease

the Bills had with this facility was 25 years but with Ralph Wil-son becoming more disenchanted with the so called economy of western New York he stated he wanted a shorter lease with a buy out clause which would enable him to move this franchise if the Bills organization met certain financial requirements. So then County Executive Gorski negotiated a 15 year lease with Buffalo Bills which expires in 2013. The Buffalo Bills have stated they are eager to negotiate a new lease with the condition that Erie County, and all related government interest agree to certain stadium improvements which will come from a commissioned study by an architectural firm. In the meantime new County executive Mark Polancarz has ordered a study of the concrete at the stadium, and what needs to be done to make sure it’s safe for current use. Well I’ve decided to do my own study because from what I see this whole issue is the result of forty years of bad decisions that have ben-efited certain parties but hurt the region of western New York. Before I go any further I must caution you that this article is going to anger those that are committed to keeping this region behind the rest of the country. They have a powerful misinfor-mation network to make you think that this area is a struggling part of the country. This is because they make their living on creating institutions that create a dysfunctional under class that depends on a part of the population that lend credibility to pub-lic programs that don’t create a economic impact that would bring the Buffalo/Niagara region back to world prominence. Yes these are the same people that have watched greatest fresh water area of the world struggle to find its way back, and watch Niagara Falls, Ontario build itself up while Niagara Falls, New York is dwarfed in comparison. You have now been warned and its time for the citizens to tell our elected leaders this is what we want to happen, and accept no less. This is why these current negotiations with the Buffalo Bills must be the beginning of changing the strategic decisions of western New York, and its elected leadership. Many believe al-ready that whatever renovations are cited need to be funded by the state of New York because they receive 20 Million dollars annually from the Buffalo Bills playing in western New York. Well let’s begin looking at other regions who were confronted with ageing stadiums that needed to be brought up to date in the last ten years. All of these cities and regions renovated their current facilities rather than build a new stadium. Now keep in mind many of the required updates are behind the scenes, and involve bringing these facilities up to date with the current re-quirements of an up to date NFL production. 1.Chicago , Illinois - $365 Million in renovation cost to Sol-dier Field 2.Kansas City, Missouri- $375 Million in renovation to Arrowhead Stadium 3.New Orleans Louisiana- $336 million in renovation to the Superdome. Part of the cost was paid for by FEMA $153 million from the Katrina disaster 4.Green Bay Wisconsin- $295 Million to Lambieu Field. In Closing Part 1 of this article I think you need to evaluate this statement by Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson in that he said we just want a good football stadium to play in. That state-ment must be analyzed by our elected leadership in coming to a responsible decision. There are between 7 to 9 professional foot-ball games played in western New York per year. These games occur between August and December of each year. That’s about 150 days of the year leaving Ralph Wilson stadium doing noth-ing out in the middle of nowhere 215 days a year. VOICE-Buffalo, NOAH, Organize Citizens to Oppose NFTA Service Cuts and Fare IncreasesDear Editor:

VOICE-Buffalo in partnership with The Niagara Organizing Al-liance for Hope (NOAH) will organize citizens to oppose the NFTA service cuts and fare increases, and advocate for invest-ment in public transportation in a manner that truly represents those who most rely on it. Concerned residents recently had the opportunity to speak out at the NFTA public hearing last Thurs-day at the Buffalo Erie Central Library. The proposed changes will affect the 94,000 Western New Yorkers who rely on public transportation each day. Along with the reduction and restructuring of many routes, the NFTA has proposed increased fares for riders, including the disabled, el-derly, and youth. The propositions have upset many local resi-dents, especially those who most rely on public transportation. In response VOICE-Buffalo and NOAH launched a regional campaign to pursue more investment, representation and diver-sity for Western New York's public transportation system. Linda Heffley, a resident of Buffalo and a dependent public transportation rider stated that "the cuts and hikes will disrupt the lives of riders who depend on public transportation such as the working poor who need jobs and now cannot get to them. There’s a reason for the clamor. Beneath the snip-pets, sound bites, and cryp-tic, strategically placed bits of misinformation, an epic battle is raging. Those who understand the politics, can follow the money trail, and see the gangsta moves be-ing made are battling for the lives, the dreams, and the futures of our children. By extension, we’re fighting for the very future of our com-munity. We (the Millions More Movement, the District Par-ent Coordinating Council, and a broad coalition of the community) want to take some time to thoroughly ex-amine the education issue, to give information, and there-fore power to the people to make change. Ask yourself a question: Would you consistently make payments on a car, a washing machine, or anything else for say – 50 years…that didn’t work? Would you continue to pay for it if you looked back over the years and real-ized that actually – it never worked? Buffalo’s Public Schools have never gradu-ated more than 50% of the students who attend them. 75% of our boys don’t grad-uate. There was a time when those who didn’t have plans for college could learn elec-tronics, or auto mechanics, or some vocation through the public schools… skills that provided an opportunity to obtain work, or even self employment. Why was vo-cational training taken out of the public schools and trans-ferred to the suburbs? Did you know that city students

High School. While maintaining a merit roll average through out high school I enjoy drilling, singing and modeling. I have performed the star spangling banner at my school pep rally. I am cur-rently attending Susan Makai’s Personal Best where I am being trained in manners and modeling and also talent. My experience with modeling has been great thus far I have been in many shows in western New York which includes Photog-raphy session with Nick Piccillo, Photography ses-sion in Toronto Canada, Commer-cial filming/Photo Session, Partici-pated in Western New York Junior Model and Tal-ent Competition which I won awards for model of the year and the first student in the modeling school in 23 years to get a perfect score, Mer-cedes Benz Show at the Walden Galleria, Salvatore’s Show, Pink Party fashion show at the Pearl Street Brewery, TT New York fashion show at the Blvd Mall, AM Buffalo, TT New York Prom fashion show at Infiniti Night Club. I also have two upcoming shows which include Young Distinguish Women of Western New York at Maritime Charter School and IMTA modeling competition in New York City in July 2012.

I am the proud daughter of Demetrius Leonard and Lisa Daniels. My mother is the owner of Brown Sugar Inc and Day Spa and my younger brother Zion Lee. Being from a single parent home my mother has instilled in me the mor-als and values of being a young black woman. She has taught me to strive and follow my dreams. I believe with god first all things are possible. I always think that with being humble and respectful I can go far. After I graduate from high school I would like to further my education at The University at Buf-falo as I still pursue my passion in the fashion industry. I know that I am ready and willing to learn the roles of being a high fashion runway model. I look at different ad campaigns that Jessica White from Buffalo, New York has done and it gives help as I study them. I can put in the necessary hard work and dedication it takes.

On my spare time I enjoy hanging with family as I mentor my younger cousins teaching them the importance be-hind getting an education. I consider myself a positive role model for the younger generation. I would like to set examples in life that my younger brother and cousin’s can follow so they are able to continue to find what they would like to pursue in life. I think in ten years from now I would like to be a high fashion model that gives back to my community to help under privileges young women that face with insecurities. I would develop a foundation where I can make sure I can make a dif-ference in today’s society.

can go there to take special education classes, but not vo-cational training? Did you know that while teachers are lamenting the high rate of absences, there is also a high rate of teacher ab-sences? A recent study by the school administration found that teachers are absent on av-erage 21 days out of a school year, and principals and as-sistant principals are absent an average of 31 days. Did you know that teachers and administrators receive 12 sick days and 5 personal days each year, or that in addition to that, principals and assistant princi-pals get 3 weeks and 3 days of vacation time? They and the teachers also get time off for holidays, as well as winter break and spring break? The same study found the obvious: the more a teacher is absent, the more poorly those students perform academically, and the more a teacher is absent, the more the students are absent. The latest obstacle to our ability to receive tens of mil-lions of dollars for the schools is the Teachers Union’s objec-tion to a teacher evaluation system. They don’t want to be held accountable for the academic performance of chil-dren who aren’t in the class-room 80% of the time. Oh – have you heard the latest? After a reluctant acceptance of that at demand, the union has now said that they refuse to be evaluated on students who aren’t in the classroom 100% of the time! Does that smack of hypocrisy? How about a double standard? A ridicu-lous, unrealistic expectation proffered to make sure their performance simply can’t be measured? Did you know that over 18,000 children were sus-pended from school last year? That means that even when our children do go to school, they’re being tossed right back out onto the streets – for non-violent, frivolous stuff like wandering the halls or wearing flip-flop sandals. Re-member Jawan Daniels? In June of 2010, this 15 year old was suspended for wander-ing the halls, and was shot in the stomach while standing at the bustop. We are fighting – literally – for the lives of our children. We’re fighting for about $70 million that the teachers are blocking because an eval-uation would expose the hold-ing pens, called PLA (persis-tently low achieving) schools,

where the penitentiary bound children are awaiting transfer. We’re fighting to expose the $20 billion racket that holds inner city children hostage – as the bait that pulls in all that money for the suburbs. We’re fighting for a higher consciousness within our community, so that we’ll no longer tolerate pouring money and resources and our chil-dren into a system that never worked – at least not for us. That argument was summed up well by the Rev. Darius Pridgen (Ellicott District Council Member) at one of last year’s parent meetings: “structure is set up to achieve something. Really, there isn’t a structural problem, because it’s achieving what it’s sup-posed to achieve - poverty, unemployment, jail, every-thing that some folks want it to achieve. …If this (parent effort) works that means some of their kids are out of a job, and some of their kid don’t get into Harvard, don’t

get in Yale, ... and now the only person in the urban com-munity that’s getting rich is the undertaker, from burying our kids. So does it work? Hell yeah, it works.” After raising these burning questions, we’ll be examin-ing four aspects of the edu-cation debacle: 1) Buffalo’s two-tiered education system, 2) the laws that maintain and perpetuate the status quo, 3) the tactic of blaming the vic-tim, and 4) the solutions that we as a family can implement to take back our children and our future. Stay tuned to this educa-tion series. Because most of all, we’re fighting for the re-alization of our own vision, where our children walk into clean, bright, beautiful class-rooms, and are greeted not by greed, but by love. Where the natural thirst for knowledge is called out, nurtured, and safe-guarded…where our children are no longer someone else’s meal ticket, but can emerge as manifestations of divine.

Oprah Interviews SC Mom Who Killed KidsORANGEBURG, S.C.— Talk show host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey has conducted a jailhouse inter-view with a South Carolina mother who pleaded guilty to killing her two sons.

Winfrey went to the jail in Orangeburg last week where 30-year-old Shaquan Duley is awaiting sentencing.

Winfrey interviewed Duley’s family in September 2010, a month after Duley suffocated her 2-year-old and 18-month-old sons, then tried to stage their deaths by driving her car into a river. Prosecutors say she killed the children after being badgered by her mother about being a poor parent. Duley faces 30 years to life in prison when she’s sentenced Friday.
