PRIEST CORNER “8TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR C”

Prayer of Saint franciS Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;Where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seekTo be consoled as to console, To be understood as to

understand, To be loved as to love;For it is in giving that we receive;

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;And it is in dying of the self that we are born

to eternal life.

This week I want to refresh the basics. We are starting the great season of Lent this Wednesday, and as I have been visiting with our children in religious education classes something dawned on me… we need a refresher on the basics!

Now before you fall asleep reading this, I have a question for you… Do you know what the precepts of the Church are? There are five universal precepts, and here in the United States, there is a 6th one. The precepts of the Church together with the 10 Commandments make up the baseline, the minimal requirement to call one a practicing Catholic. The precepts of the Church are:1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor.2. You shall confess your sins at least once a year.3. You shall receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season.4. You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church.5. You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church.

6. Support and uphold the Church’s teachings on Marriage. (Special emphasis in the USA)What does this mean? If you or I am not at least fulfilling these basic starting points, it is time to start. We cannot run in the spiritual life if we have not learned to walk! Through these basic points, we learn to find our spiritual legs as we begin to stumble on the way with Christ our Lord. Lent will soon be here. Take an honest look at these essential aspects of our faith and if you struggle with one or more than the one you don’t have to look any further for a Lenten penance or act of charity. God bless you, happy Pancake day and we will see you this Wednesday as we begin the great season of Lent, remembering our need for repentance and forgiveness of our sins.

In Christ,Fr. Jacob

THEO 4881 RCIA Kansas! (1 hour course) Celebrating the Rites Presenter: Fr. Tim Piasecki - Coordinating Instructor: Fr. Workshop is presented by Catherine of Sienna Institute. *This course is one of the 1 hour courses needed to obtain the Diocesan Certification in Liturgical/Youth Ministry. Class Times: March 22 &23 Location - Heartland Center for Spirituality, Great Bend Cost: 1 hr. course for college credit - $50.00* 1 hr. course for enrichment - $25.00* *price quotes do not include books

What is the Viacrucis?It is the meditation of the moments and sufferings lived by Jesus since he was taken prisoner until his death on the cross and later resurrection. Literally, via cruis means “way of the cross”. When we pray it, we remember with love and gratitude how much Jesus suffered to save us from sin during his passion and death. This road is represented by 15 images of the passion that are called “stations”. You will be encouraged to carry the crosses of each day, if you frequently remember the stations or steps of Jesus until Calvary.
