The Service

[Congregational responses are printed in bold-faced type.] ELW: the hard covered service book, Evangelical Lutheran Worship

The Prelude "It is Well" arr. Kidwell Welcome and Announcements Moment for Reflection

Please stand in body or spirit.

GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

The Confession and Forgiveness

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who stretches out the heavens,

who sends light to the nations, who gives breath to us all. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

Loving God, we confess that we have turned from your way to follow our own ways. Forgive us for the times we have spoken or acted too quickly; we have not spoken or acted at all; we have hurt those closest to us; we have hurt those we have yet to know; we have thought more about ourselves than others; we have thought less of ourselves than we ought. Turn us around, and give us a fresh start, so that we can live again as your children. Amen. Even when we have done wrong, God makes us right. Even when we have messed up, God puts us together. God’s love never runs out. God never tires of calling us beloved children. Hear God say to you now: Your sins are forgiven,

for the sake of ☩ Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

The Prayer of the Day Let us pray together: Holy God, mighty and immortal, you are beyond our knowing, yet we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ. Transform us into the likeness of your Son, who renewed our humanity so that we may share in his divinity, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE WORD

God speaks to us in scripture, preaching, and song.

The First Reading Exodus 34:29-35 Moses’ face shone with the reflected glory of God after he received the ten commandments on Mount Sinai. The sight caused the Israelites to be afraid, so Moses wore a veil to mask the radiance of God’s glory, taking it off when he spoke directly with God.

A reading from Exodus.

29Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. 31But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. 32Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. 33When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; 34but whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him. Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

Special Music “Thy Word” Grant

Soloist: Fallon George – Guitar

The congregation may join Fallon in the refrain during the Psalm:

1The LORD is king; let the peoples tremble!

He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake! 2The LORD is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples. 3Let them praise your great and awesome name. Holy is he! 4Mighty King, lover of justice, you have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. Response

5Extol the LORD our God; worship at his footstool. Holy is he! 6Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called on his name. They cried to the LORD, and he answered them. 7He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud; they kept his decrees, and the statutes that he gave them. Response

8O LORD our God, you answered them;

you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings. 9Extol the LORD our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the LORD our God is holy. Response

9

The Second Reading 2 Corinthians 3:12--4:2 In his debates with the Corinthians, Paul contrasts the glory of Moses with the glory of Christ. The Israelites could not see Moses’ face because of the veil. But in Christ we see the unveiled glory of God and are transformed into Christ’s likeness.

A reading from Second Corinthians. 12Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, 13not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. 14But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. 15Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; 16but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

Please stand in body or spirit.

The Holy Gospel Luke 9:28-36

The conversation about Jesus’ suffering and death is enclosed in a dazzling foreshadowing of the resurrection. God affirms Jesus’ identity, the disciples are stunned speechless, and Jesus resumes his mission with a demonstration of his power over evil.

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. Glory to you, O Lord.

28Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. 31They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. 34While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. 35Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” 36When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Please be seated.

8 AM The Apostles’ Creed 10:30 AM Holy Baptism – page 14

Let us affirm the Christian faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 8 AM – continue with the prayers on page 19.

The Sacrament of Holy Baptism The Assembly may be seated.

Assistant: God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word, God delivers us from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus Christ. We are united with all the baptized in the one body of Christ, anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and joined in God's mission for the life of the world.

Assistant: Who presents this child for baptism?

Parents: We present Rylee Lynne for baptism.

Assistant: In Christian love you have presented this child for Holy Baptism. You should, therefore, faithfully bring her to the services of God’s house, and teach her the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments. As she grows in years, you should place in her hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for her instruction in the Christian faith, that, living in the covenant of her Baptism and in communion with the Church, she may lead a godly life until the day of Jesus Christ. Do you promise to fulfill these obligations?

Parents: I do.

Assistant: Adam and Kelly, do you promise to nurture Rylee Lynne in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God's Spirit, and to help her live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church?

Sponsors: I do.

Assistant: People of God, gathered in this community of faith do you promise to pray for Rylee Lynne in her new life in Christ? All: I do.

The Profession of Faith

Pastor: I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church.

Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God?

All: I renounce them. Pastor: Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? All: I renounce them. Pastor: Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? All: I renounce them.

Pastor: Do you believe in God the Father? All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Pastor: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? All: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Pastor: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? All: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Thanksgiving at the Font.

Pastor: We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river Jordan your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus' death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to life with Christ.

Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who are washed in the waters of baptism

may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

All: Amen.

The Assembly may be seated.

The Baptism

Pastor: Rylee Lynne, I baptize you in the name of the Father, + and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen.

Assistant: We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons

new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life.

Sustain Rylee Lynne with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever.

All: Amen.

The sign of the cross is traced on the forehead of child with oil used for this purpose.

Jesus used oil in his ministry as a way of blessing individuals.

Pastor: Child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.

All: Amen.

The Welcome & Presentation of the Candle

The candle is lit and presented to a parent or sponsor.

Assistant: Jesus said, I am the light of the world. May this light shine through you that others may see the love of God in you, and glorify God in heaven.

Pastor: Let us welcome the newly baptized.

All: We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share here at CLC. We give thanks for your life among us as a child of God.

The Prayers of Intercession

Please kneel or sit as you are able for the prayers.

United as one body in Christ, let us pray for the church, the world, and all those in need.

A brief silence.

We pray for the church. Open us to listen to your word and to do your will. Direct us in paths of faithful service that reflect your love. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For the earth, your beloved creation and our fragile home; for mountains and prairies; for cities and wilderness areas. Renew places we have neglected or misused. Where natural disasters have altered the land, help us to honor nature’s healing. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. For the nations. Shine the light of truth into world relationships hindered by mistrust or misunderstanding. Bring freedom and stability to all nations. Shelter those who have been displaced by war, famine, or natural disaster. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. For those in need. Free those who struggle with shame or guilt. Bring clarity to those whose judgment is clouded by fear. Comfort those who grieve, and heal the sick. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. For this assembly. Deepen our faith and understanding. Guide our ministries of hospitality and outreach. Renew us in the baptismal promise to care for others and the world you have made. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Here other intercessions may be offered. With thanksgiving, we remember those who have died. Inspire us by their example and bring us with them into the eternal light of your presence. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Receive our prayers and fill us with the radiance of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

60 + FUN & FELLOWSHIP - March 14 @ 12 noon Shake off the winter blues by coming out and enjoying an afternoon of fun and fellowship. Have fun talking to members and neighbors, sharing a meal and being entertained. Join us Thursday, March 14th at noon in the Parish Hall. This month our own Steve Seyfried will be entertaining us with one of his creative presentations titled “Finding King Tut”. It is the story of British archaeologist Howard's Carter search for the tomb of King Tutankhamen. For over ten years he explored Egypt's Valley of the Kings until he found a hidden stairway leading the treasures of the boy king. The show is history and humor together with an overview of ancient Egyptian culture. Two actors bring all the characters to life. Please note that March is a BYOL month. What’s that mean? It means bring your own lunch. Coffee, tea, and a variety of desserts will be provided. Open to all. Bring a friend or neighbor. Fellowship, food and entertainment. You don’t want to miss it. CROSS+GEN – March 17 @ 9 am

There is magic when the wisdom of the elder meets the wonder of the child! That's the idea behind our cross-generational events here at Christ's! We explore Bible people, favorite stories and themes, through games, crafts, skits and much more! A fun filled hour of learning, sharing and fellowship for ages 3-103. If you've never experienced Cross+Gen, give it a try. CLC MISSION TRIP - Puerto Rico | 1600 miles begin with a single mile The mission team invites you to partner with us as we make our way to Puerto Rico in June, where we will help with Hurricane Maria relief. There is a display in the lobby showing the 1600 mile distance between Oreland and San Juan. We ask you to sponsor us "by the mile", at $10 per mile. If all miles are sponsored, we will raise $16,000. Whether you contribute one mile, ten, or more, please know that your generosity will make this very important journey possible. Checks should be made payable to Christ’s Lutheran Church with Puerto Rico on the memo line. Donations can be placed in the offering plate, the basket in the lobby or given to the church office. Thank you!

CLC CAFÉ – located in the lobby between the 8 and 10:30 worship hours Stop by for a cup of coffee, tea, snack, or just to say hello! We are open from 8:45-10 am every Sunday except the 3rd Sunday of the month when all are welcome to come downstairs to the Cross-Gen program in Parish Hall. GREEN TEAM TIP: Again, let’s contact our legislators about the environment! The results of NASA’s & the Natl Oceanic Atmospheric Admin studies this winter show alarming reduction in the glaciers in the Arctic & Antarctic. The Bering Sea lost ice the size of Idaho in just 2 weeks this Feb! Toxic algae blooms, typically only in warm water, are growing and poisoning seals, walruses & whales. Glaciers protecting ice basins in the Antarctic from collapsing have dropped 10 ft & the speed of melting is accelerating – a collapse could cause sea levels to rise up to 92 ft! Global warming is not a hoax and must be taken seriously!
