The innovative teaching method, promoting hands-on learning and prob- lem solving, is meant to inspire even the youngest student to come up with a solution to a problem through trial and error. Answer keys and “inside the box” thinking were tossed aside for the event as students searched for novel ways to look at a problem and achieve success. The two day event was organized and carried out by instructors and graduate students from Iowa State Uni- versity, as well as representatives from the Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency. The youngest students, those in TK, kindergarten, and first grade, selected three sessions to attend on Monday February 23rd, while students in second through fourth grade, selected four sessions for Tuesday February 24th. Erin Olson of the Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency summed up the mindset of the program’s instructors. “Too often society underestimates kids and their intelligence and awesomeness.” Organiz- ers of the Maker Space Days hope participating children come away from this with a stronger sense of self-reli- ance and potential. According to Pete Evans, an Iowa State University instructor, “Direct experience has long been recognized as a very deep learning methodology. Even in the class- room, a passive lecture is now being considered less powerful than active learning--this is now described as flipping the classroom. We call this program FLEx for “Forward Learning Experience” as we believe that this direct experience will provide a deeper learning experi- ence in the short time we have to work with the students.” Indeed, adult participants strived to take a back seat to allow students the opportunity to circumnavigate a problem on their own. For example, the vague instruc- tion to “build a tunnel,” was offered to the children and they swarmed upon a pile of cardboard boxes and took to creating a tunnel. In terms of the ultimate purpose of a project such as this, the tunnel was proposed to serve as a prop for physical education classes. The students love racing about on scooters, and this tunnel provides a great backdrop for their trek around the gym. Another group led by Jill Mims of Calhoun County’s ISU Extension and Outreach program, sought to instruct students in the science of excavation. Barely a word was spoken as the students hunched over their respective rocks of interest chipping away carefully to locate an artifact. Some had uncovered a clue, such as a vibrant pink tail, but Mims cautioned them that they re- ally don’t know what they will find until it is completely unearthed. This is the tedious work of an archaeologist. Additionally, the students explored concepts such as size and scale and learned that some dinosaurs might be small Levi Harmon utilizes string and yogurt lids to ex- plain Einstein’s Entanglement Theory. Lane Ahlers works on a picture for his mother. Taylor Willardson works diligently to uncover a treasure in her rock as archaeologists do. Firemen’s Super “C” Tractor Silent Auction The Gowrie Firemen are having a silent auction for a restored 1952 Farmall Super “C” Tractor. The tractor was donated by Doc and Jean Hubbard of Gowrie to be raffled with proceeds going to Gowire’s new fire station. December 6 2014 the raffle drawing was held and Frank Rose from Gliddden, Iowa won the tractor. Frank then donated the tractor back to the Fire Department so the more money could be raised for the fire station. The tractor can be seen currently at the Gowrie Fire Station. The tractor includes a bell mower system and a narrow trout end conversions. Bids can be placed by contacting any Gowrie Fire- man or by calling Greg Benson at 515-352-3896. The final bids for the silent auction will be taken at the Fireman’s Breakfast Sunday, March 15. The silent auction will include many other items to bid on. The breakfast is at the old fire station from 10:30 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. Breakfast is a free will donation and ev- eryone is invited to attend.

Despite China’s refusal to approve Syngenta’s GMO seed, Syngenta continued to sell its seed to U.S. corn farmers. When China banned U.S. corn imports, the price of corn fell dramatically, and corn farmers across the country lost BILLIONS of dollars.

Our team represented over 2000 individual farmers in the Rice GMO claim. We opposed the class action and secured more for the farmers we represented. Our group of lawyers will continue meeting with farmers with respect to each farmer’s individual Syngenta claim.

Ayes: Miller, Welter, Carlson, Field, McGuire, Harrison, Holmgaard, Nays: None, Motion Carried:7-0 Moved by Harrison, seconded by Carlson to approve the minutes. Ayes: Miller, Welter, Carlson, Field, McGuire, Harrison, Holmgaard, Nays: None, Motion Carried:7-0 Moved by Harrison, seconded by McGuire to approve the bills as presented. Ayes: Miller, Welter, Carlson, Field, McGuire, Harrison, Holmgaard, Nays: None, Motion Carried:7-0 Moved by Carlson, seconded by McGuire to approve the financials as presented. Ayes: Miller, Welter, Carlson, Field, McGuire, Harrison, Holmgaard, Nays: None, Motion Carried:7-0 Moved by Harrison, seconded by McGuire to approve the retirement of John Lomicka as Bus Driver with a sincere thank you for his years of service. Ayes: Miller, Welter, Carlson, Field, McGuire, Harrison, Holmgaard, Nays: None, Motion Carried:7-0 The Large Group Speech presentation was canceled due to the District Basketball game being played the same night. The speech students wished to attend the game. A discussion was held regarding new computers for the staff members. Many of the current computers are not functioning correctly, and have reached an age that they will need to be replaced. The conversation was tabled as the voter approved PPEL did not pass, and that would have helped to fund the new computers. We will discuss later in the year. Moved by Carlson, seconded by McGuire to approve a 28 E sharing agreement to allow the city of Gowrie to use the Gowrie Baseball field for little league. This is a continuing agreement. Ayes: Miller, Welter, Carlson, Field, McGuire, Harrison, Holmgaard, Nays: None, Motion Carried:7-0 Moved by Holmgaard, seconded by Harrison to approve the final reading of the Southeast Valley High School Good Conduct Policy.Ayes: Miller, Welter, Carlson, Field, McGuire, Harrison, Holmgaard, Nays: None, Motion Carried:7-0 A discussion was held regarding the voter approved Physical Plant and Equipment Levy that failed to pass in February. Many comments were made that the public did not understand all of the information, or were not properly informed on the exactly what the PPEL money would be used for. Misconceptions were that the money would be used for things such as building a new baseball field in Gowrie, or that the money would go to pay teachers salaries. It was suggested that people be mailed informational flyers telling them exactly what was needed. For example, the roof repairs on the high school building are very expensive, but if not done the long term damage will be much more expensive. The gym floor had become a liability and the boards were too thin to repair anymore. Replacement was necessary. The bleachers were a hazard and replacement was needed as well. All of these expenses require PPEL funds. The funds from the PPEL are not legally allowed to be used for general fund expenditures including teacher’s salaries. It was agreed that the District would approve an additional special election to be held April 7, 2015. Moved by McGuire, seconded by Harrison to approve to adopt a Resolution of Election for the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy. The District will submit the PPEL question to the registered voters at the April 7, 2015 special election. Whereupon the President declared said Resolution duly adopted as follows:

RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the Board deems it necessary and desirable to provide additional funding for the purposes set out in Iowa Code Chapter 298, by accessing funds generated from a Physical Plant and Equipment Levy at a maximum rate limit not to exceed $1.00 per $1,000 of property value, including asbestos projects, purchase and improvement of grounds, including the legal cost relating to the property, acquisition, costs of surveys of the property, costs of relocation assistance under state and federal law, and other costs incidental to property acquisition, improvement of grounds, which includes grading, landscaping, paving, seeding, planting of shrubs and trees; constructing sidewalks, roadways, retaining walls, sewers and storm drains, and installing hydrants; surfacing and soil treatment of athletic fields and tennis courts; exterior lighting, including athletic fields and tennis courts; furnishing and installing flagpoles, gateways, fences, and underground storage tanks which are not parts of building service systems; demolition work; and special assessments against the school district for public improvements, as defined in Iowa Code § 384.37, purchase, lease or lease-purchase of single unit of equipment or technology exceeding $500 in value, payment of debts contracted for the erection or construction of schoolhouses or buildings, not including interest on bonds, procuring or acquisition of library facilities, repairing, remodeling, reconstruction, improving or expanding the schoolhouses or buildings and additions to existing schoolhouses, expenditures for energy conservation, rental of facilities under Chapter 28E, purchase of transportation equipment for transporting students, purchase or lease-purchase option agreements for school buildings, and/or equipment purchases for recreational purposes, Prairie Valley Community School District pursuant to the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy, and WHEREAS, the education of students in the Prairie Valley Community School District depends upon safe and adequate facilities designed for student learning, transportation and other equipment and technology appropriately purchased from the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy while preserving the district's General Fund for the general purposes of educational programming and staff, and WHEREAS, the Prairie Valley Community School District wishes to take action to allow voters to approve a Physical Plant and Equipment Levy consisting of a combination of a property tax on all the taxable property in the School District commencing on July 1, 2015, and a Physical Plant and Equipment Income Surtax upon the state individual income tax of each individual taxpayer resident in the District on December 31 of

Brandon Louis helped with Large Group Speech, and Brittany Geisler will help with the play. Moved by Welter, seconded by Holmgaard to approve the Budget Guarantee Resolution. Prairie Valley Community School District, will levy property tax for fiscal year 2016 for the regular program budget adjustment as allowed under Iowa Code section 257.14 Lois Irwin, Superintendent, supplied the Board with a packet that gave them information on current topics the District is addressing. Such topics included the PPEL discussion, Student Presentations at Board meetings, reporting on Teaching and Learning, Curriculum Articulation, the Teacher Leadership Team, and Student Engagement. Jim Henrich was not in attendance but sent a report to be read. The report was as follows:February High School Board Report A very successful winter sports season is winding down. SV Jaguars’ boys basketball play tonight in districts, and they have 13 victories at this time. The SV Jaguars’ girls team ended the year last Saturday with 10 wins. SV Jaguar wrestling qualified 4 for districts and 2 for state. Along with the fine arts department other activities the SV Jaguar teams are enjoying a lot of success! Can’t wait for spring sports to start to continue the trend! Five teachers and I visited Humboldt High School on January 28th. We investigated their Teacher Leadership Compensation grant, and their professional development initiative Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW). It was very beneficial to see how they set up their grant, and how the AIW operates with staff. More info to come. Tamara Hanson and I have been meeting with representatives from Berryhill Center in Ft Dodge. Berryhill received a grant that allows them to partner with area schools to provide on-site mental health needs. We are working on schedule that will allow them to come here on a set day of the week and provide services that kids need. It is all done through parent referrals and school partnerships. The advantage if transportation is not an issue for families. The professional development day on February 18th was very positive. All curricular groups met and looked at Iowa Core alignment, and gaps. Staff discussions and interactions were all based on what’s needed for our students. It was a really good day! Jim Duncan reported that early in Feb some of the Elementary staff attended a Teacher Leadership meeting in Jefferson. He was happy to report that they use Everyday Math in Jefferson, and they can’t say enough good things about it. Iowa Assessments went really well. They turned it into a “game day” type event by putting up signs and banners saying things like “Beat the Iowa Assessments” and “Go Jaguars”. It really made the day more fun. They are working on ELA with both Elementary Schools as well as planning for a 4th grade orientation to introduce the students from both buildings to each other. They are hoping to start doing it with the younger classes as well, so they know each other sooner. The District has been awarded Microsoft money to be used to purchase 32 IPads for the Elementary. There is also money awarded for software. A huge thank you to the PTA for purchasing 12 additional IPads. They also purchased cases for all 44 IPads. The PTA will also give each teacher an Itunes gift card to purchase apps for the IPads. The PTA also purchased a new hood for the Elementary Kiln so that they can start using it there. The support of the PTA is very appreciated. The PTA will begin their Hyvee fundraiser. soon. Cub Scouts is doing their Pinewood Derby at the Elementary on Saturday, February 21st. Kindergarten Roundup is coming in March. The Maker Space day will be happening on February 23 and 24th. The concept is based on making STEM fun. There will be digital storytelling, building a cardboard maze, 3D printers, quantum entanglement, electrical currents and much more. The students will pick the activities they are involved in.
