UPDATE ON HOME LAND PROJECTS In the Yo! News from Feb. 7 you may remember we wrote about the
three TRM projects that are happening right now:
1. Reconstructing Ba'as
2. The Ba'as Lands Plan
3. The Strategic Forests Management Plan.
In the Yo! News from Feb. 21 we gave some more information about
the forestry-related activities that have been happening for these
TRM projects. This is a quick update on activities that have been
happening since then.
(Please note that, while these activities focus heavily on the Ba'as area, similar work is planned for Takush.)
On February 24 we had the second round of community meetings.
We had a daytime meeting with the elders and council, and an
evening meeting that was open to anyone. There were over a dozen
attendees for the daytime meeting, and about 20 community
members at the evening meeting.
The purpose of these meetings was to talk about the Reconstructing
Ba'as project, and answer questions like: If we could build ONE thing
in Ba'as, what should we build there? What kind of things DON'T
you want to see there? Do you see yourself moving to Ba'as to live?
Moving there to work?
It was really nice to talk about these questions. Our elders shared
some stories of what it was like to live in the home lands when they
were younger. Bird (Alfred Rufus) emphasized the challenges of
living off the land: "You can't just stay home and put the TV on. You
gotta work, all the time. You gotta get up early in the morning."
Mostly the elders agreed that they would rather see some small
projects happen RIGHT AWAY than wait for a big project. They
suggested the following ideas:
Clear land to make a better camping spot
Get a portable sawmill out there to create lumber
Focus on building a dock and "loading zone" where people can unload
their groceries and gear
Betty stressed the need to make any cabins or structures
comfortable, so that people WANT to stay for long trips and don't
want to go home after just one night over there.
At the evening meeting we did a short survey and talked about how
difficult it is for community members to visit the home lands. Terrisa
said that if there were scheduled trips she'd love to go visit. Ollie
talked about how awesome it would be to have community members
working over there to gather and prepare our traditional foods for
the elders. Ernie agreed, pointing out how expensive Overwaitea is.
Wade talked about we should try and make sure whatever gets built
is wheelchair accessible so it's easy for the elders to visit.
Peewee suggested that we could start basic, with a dock and
boardwalk, then extend it sometime in the future. Some of the ideas
that the rest of the group came up with included:
Cabins
A big house

Thomas Henderson Sr. spoke to everyone about the traditional
protocols of returning to the home lands. There was agreement that
whatever happens over there can't be guided by the government, it
has to belong just to our people.
The TRM project team is taking these notes and suggestions and will
be creating a business plan for some kind of multi-use structure that
includes a lot of the features discussed at both meetings.
The next community meetings are this coming week, March 13-14.
Location and time will be posted asap, hope to see you there!

Economic
Development
Update
Over the next few weeks I will try to bring our
community up to speed with regards to the
economic development corporation work that has
been happening over the last number of months.
I will be starting this update with some graphics
and will continue to build and grow these
graphics until the whole picture of the structure
of the Ecdev Corporation is revealed.
This structure has been discussed with many of
our community members at ecdev meetings over
the last few years. At these meetings the
community consistently spoke about the desire to
have an ecdev corporation to “separate politics
from business”, these comments have not been
lost on Chief and Council and they also
advocated for a structure that saw a distinct
separation from the everyday workings of the
ecdev corporation and the Chief and Council. It is
important over the next few weeks to read about
what each section; Community, Chief and
Council, Ecdev Board, CEO, Managers,
employees, consultants have as a responsibility
to look after.
There are a number of things that may look
different to you but please be patient hopefully in
another few weeks after all of the updates it will
start to make more sense.
Community: Currently the community members
who live on reserve have the ability to elect new
councillors every two years as well as a new
Chief Councillor every two years. We operate
under what is considered to be a “custom election
code”. Our community is electing individuals who
they feel will best represent them on all kinds of
issues; health and family, education, Elders,
housing, social development, fisheries, Natural
resources, band administration, treaty, and
economic development. It is very important that
the community elects the best candidate
available who will work at making the right
decisions in all of these different areas for the
greater community.
It is the community’s responsibility to ensure
that they are as informed as possible about all
matters that may affect their community. There
is an amazing amount of work happening right
now and our community needs to be aware of all
that it means.
From the economic development corporation
perspective it is very important that you elect the
candidate that will work with you, communicate
back to you what is happening as well as bring
forward any ideas that you may have.
One other piece (A fun one too!) is at an annual
general meeting with the ecdev corporate board
the community tells Chief and Council and the
ecdev board how they would like to spend any
profits that may come back to the community.
Many communities have many different ideas as
how to spend this money and I’m sure that our
community members will have some terrific
ideas! It is vital that we create long lasting
sustainable businesses to support our community
in the years ahead.
Chief and Council: Wow what an amazing
variety of things your Councillors and Chief
Councillor have to be aware of! This job is not for
the faint of heart… Your council members must
be aware of all of the activities that are
happening in all of the areas mentioned above
(health and family, education, Elders, housing,
social development, fisheries, Natural resources,
band administration, good governance, treaty,
and economic development) and they are asked
to become very knowledgeable around certain
areas, we call this taking on a portfolio. Each
councillor has one or more of the areas described
above as their specific responsibility to know and
understand, they are then asked to report to all
PAGE 4 GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS 03/07/2014
of council what they know about certain topics
before decisions are made. A strong Council will
reach out to their technical team and ask
questions and look for information about
different topics. Council will also listen to the
community and bring your perspectives to the
table. Decisions made by Council have huge legal
and economic responsibilities tied to them.
Everything that happens for the Gwa’sala-
’Nakwaxda’xw Nations has to be signed by Chief
and Council and they are held accountable for
their Fiduciary responsibility (more on this in
the next issue). Every project, economic
development activity, treaty related measure,
referral, planning exercise, base funding
agreement, basically everything that is
associated with the GNN is the responsibility
both legally and financially of your Chief and
Council.
See what I mean? Those people are busy, and
that was only the tip of the ice burg…
Ok, so now we have some better idea of what
Chief and Council are responsible for, we can
talk about how they fit in the whole “ecdev
structure”. Chief and Council who are elected by
you the community, appoint directors to guide
the work of the ecdev corporation. The directors
cannot be Chief and Council (explanation to
come) but they must be appointed by Chief and
Council. The number of directors that have been
identified for our ecdev board is 5. The board of
directors (which is an unpaid position) should be
very knowledgeable about business, finances,
legal structures, corporate set ups, have an
education or back ground in business or
economics. There will be a full job description in
the posting for these positions in the weeks to
come. By having an independent board for the
ecdev corporation we have accomplished a
number of things that will protect the Gwa’sala-
’Nakwaxda’xw Nations from potential liability
and tax issues. This board answers to the Chief
and Council who in turn answers to you the
community.
In next week’s newsletter I will add a few more
“boxes” to our picture. If you have any questions
about this or any other economic development
work please come and see me or call/text.

COOKING CLASSES, OVERWAITEA
TOURS AND PAVILIONS:
As some of you may have noticed a pavilion
has been built between the community
garden and the bus shed. It was built with
funds from a grant we were awarded from
New Horizons for Seniors. The purpose of the
pavilion is to provide a place where the
Elders can teach youth how to prepare and
barbeque salmon the traditional way.
Community members can also use it as a
space to clean and process salmon when food
fish is delivered. It’s important to note that
the pavilion was built for the Elders, so they
may have some rules and guidelines they
would like to set out regarding it’s use.
Ardy Beleznai, a timber-frame carpenter,
along with the help of Brandon Walkus and
Rolando King, built the pavilion. Ardy was
able to teach Brandon and Rolando about
timber-frame carpentry. There was a short
time frame to have it built, because it had to
be finished before March 15th, 2014, but
Ardy, Rolando and Brandon were able to
have it built within three weeks! Leo Lawson
put in a lot of work on this project by
coordinating with the vendors and suppliers,
creating a budget and much more. We are
very thankful for the hard work of Leo, Ardy,
Brandon, Rolando, Ernie, Alvin and all
others who helped with this project.
Andrea and I had scheduled a cooking demo
on Friday March 7th at 1:30 pm, but we have
to postpone it until Wednesday, March 12th
from 11 am to 1pm. We’ve realized that it
will be too difficult to sort and pack the Good
Food Bags as well as have the cooking demo
at the same time. So the Cooking demos will
be held on a different day. Sorry for any
inconvenience. There is still time to sign up
for the cooking demos at the Health &
Family Services Building Reception or Band
Office Reception.
As mentioned in the last Yo!News, Andrea
and I will be giving Overwaitea Healthy
Shopping tours. You can sign up for these at
the Health & Family Services Reception and
the Band Office Reception. A date and time
will be set after we see how many people are
interested.
On the following page you will find a guide to
reading food labels. The aim of these is to
help you make informed decisions about the
types of foods you buy from the grocery store.
Keep well,
Lucy hemphill,
Food Security & Nutrition Coordinator
PAGE 8 GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS 03/07/2014
Ingredients list
Food labels, including the Nutrition Facts table and
Ingredients list found on packaged foods, can help you make
healthier food choices. The document on the previous page
should help you read the Nutrition Facts Table, but here’s
some information about the Ingredients List.
The ingredient list shows all the ingredients in a packaged
food. A good general rule of thumb when it comes to
ingredients is: less is better and if you can’t pronounce
something on a label, you probably don’t want it in your
body.
Ingredients are listed in order of weight, beginning with the
ingredient that weighs the most and ending with the
ingredient that weighs the least. This means that a food
contains more of the ingredients found at the beginning of
the list, and less of the ingredients at the end of the list. So
if an ingredients list has sugar in the first three ingredients,
you probably want to avoid it.
In general, try to avoid these ingredients:
-Aspartame, saccharin & acesulfame-k
These artificial sweeteners have been linked to many health
issues.
-BHA and BHT
These chemicals are often added to food to preserve fats and
have been linked to tumor growth in animals.
-High fructose corn syrup
Research has yielded conflicting results as to whether high
fructose corn syrup is linked to obesity, but it's best to limit
your intake.
-Trans fat
Also known as “partially hydrogenated oil,” trans fats have
been shown to raise your bad cholesterol and increase
chance of heart disease.
-Sodium nitrates/nitrite
These preservatives are used with a lot of processed meats.

Elders Update
Well hello everyone!
I hope you are keeping well. Here is an outlook of
what we have been up to at the Elders Center:
Mondays are still Elders Day! Starts at 10am to
3pm. We have been experiencing low attendees
due to work, illness, etc. I strongly encourage all
of the Elders to come as it is a place to learn new
things and visit with each other, as well with the
staff that you all were wanting to see ;)
Catering jobs have been a huge hit this past
month. I have had people that attended
Vancouver Island Universities grad ceremony
last Friday sending me messages how great our
catering & food was. Way to go team!
We had our very first kick off for cookimg class
with Eximeki Wednesday. We had 2 Elders show
up for lunch which is better than none. We will
be doing this once a month with them. Hopefully
we get more attending.
Elders Council has had some pretty interesting
meets the last couple of weeks. We have been
brainstorming where we are going to go this
summer. We will discuss that further again over
lunch this Monday March 10. So please be here
for 10 so you don't miss out.
Once we have our options on the table, I will be
going door to door with voting ballots and that
way it will be an honest input rather tjan feeling
like you have to vote with the majority. After all,
this is YOUR trip and your decision right ;)
Hope to see most of you there. I understand not
everyone can make it all the time.
To entice you a bit, there will be a door prize.
Each time you come, your name will be entered
to win a trip down island with yours truly to go
get your shopping done! No you won't get
spending money. A ride with lots of space is all I
can offer you at this time. Please note I have a
big truck or a car for us to go on. 2 people will get
to go this first round.

G&N RECYCLING FACILITY
By now, some community members might be wondering about construction activity
taking place across from Wakas Hall on Henderson Street.
Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations (GNN) received $97,000 to construct a recycling
facility for the community. The facility will also act as a Transfer Station for larger
household waste, metals and construction debris.
Band Administration office is developing a community education pamphlet that
will be delivered door to door on the initial operations of the facility / transfer
station. We will provide updates and further announcements through future
newsletters, community events and on G&NN website.
We currently have an agreement to recycle certain materials through Mult-
Materials British Columbia (MMBC) starting May 19, 2014. MMBC is a new
stewardship program being implemented by the Province. We hope to achieve
similar agreements with other Stewardship Programs. Further information about
MMBC and other Stewards will be provided through our education program.
Thank you to Chief and Council and GNN Administration for supporting this
initiative.
We are looking at doing a major community clean-up from any saving to our
capital budget.
Thank you.

G&NN, Capital Specialist Officer
