FROM MICHAEL

From the Preacher’s Desk
“I Belong to God” Joey Davis
Everyone has an innate desire and need to belong and be loved. Unfortunately many look to fill that void by associating themselves with the wrong people or places. We can be sure, however, of our standing when God is the one we associate with. I belong to God if I am God’s person. In the Old Testament God called to Himself a special people to be His nation. Christians today are the spiritual Israel (Ephesians 2:11-13). We are commanded to be a special nation unto Him (1 Peter 2:9-10). It is interesting how God describes His people in the New Testament. They
are spoken of as those who “know” God and “are known” by Him (Galatians 4:8-9). This indicates a relationship built on knowledge of one another. John describes Christians as those who are “of God” and those who “have God” denoting the behavior necessary for one to belong to God (1 John 4:4-6; 2 John 9). Paul calls the saints “espoused” or betrothed to Christ. In other words, the vow a Christian takes to belong to God is as solemn as a wedding vow. Jesus himself describes His disciples as His friends describing the depth of love between man and Savior (John 15:14-15). All these can serve as indicators of our relationship with God and show us if we truly belong to Him. I belong to God if I am God’s child. The church is described as a family in scripture, and Christians are called children or sons of God (1 John 3:1-2). This is through adoption according to Galatians 4:5 and this family is not limited to any race, gender, or social status (Galatians 3:26-29). Being God’s child comes with an inheritance (Colossians 1:12). Part of that inheritance is God’s general care for His creation (Matthew 5:45). But the second part is much more valuable. Ephesians 1:3 describes spiritual blessings found only in Christ Jesus. Ultimately, heaven is the subject of the Christian’s inheritance (Matthew 25:34). What a blessing to be part of the family of God and to belong to Him in that way! I belong to God if I am God’s pilgrim. Belonging to God naturally excludes belonging to self, Satan or the world. Jesus said concerning His disciples, “They are not of the world even as I am not of the world” (John 17:16). If we don’t belong to this world full of sin then where is our citizenship? Paul writes in Philippians 3:20, “For our citizenship is in heaven; whence also we wait for a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:” (ASV). The Christian doesn’t belong in this world and therefore doesn’t act like the world. 1 Peter 2:11 states, “Beloved, I beseech you as sojourners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.” As God’s person, God’s child, and God’s pilgrim, the Christian needs to constantly contemplate the privilege of being who he is and to strive for a godly character. We can know that we are saved if we belong to God. 1 John 5:13 says, “These things have I written unto you, that ye may know that ye have eternal life, even unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God.” If you are unsure of your salvation seek out help! God will accept you as His own if you follow Him.
