Dear Parishioners, Because bulletin articles are due a week in advance, occasionally I write before something of great importance occurs. The bulletin column for September 16, 2001 had no mention of 9/11 because it was submitted the day before that terrible attack. I mention all of this because I would like to reflect on the Corona Virus but the news seems to change daily. Primarily I want to write about this from a spiritual perspective, but first I would mention some practical aspects. We have received no formal instructions from the Archdiocese (as of March 1) but I encourage people to get information from reliable sources such as the CDC and WHO. The recommendations strongly emphasize regular washing of hands and refraining from close contact whenever one has cold or flu symptoms. I would encourage our parishioners to use their own common sense about physical contact at the welcome before Mass and at the Sign of Peace. If you wish a smile and greeting is sufficient. Use common sense when partaking of the Precious Blood. It seems to me that the stories of this virus should remind us of two truths: We are all connected and we are all vulnerable. We are connected. Human beings share a common lineage. We all love our children, want to be happy and secure, and desire to be loved. We all search for meaning. Sin and grace are found in every culture and nation. In this modern world that connectivity has grown. Economies are interconnected. Cars made in the United States use parts assembled in Latin America with materials found in Asia. Plastics dumped in waters in this country find their way to China (and vice-versa). Factories in India can pollute cities in America. Ice melt in Greenland can flood Micronesia. And illness begun in one country can inhabit a globe. This does not mean that borders have no purpose. Of course they can. It does mean that ultimately, however, our strength lies not in isolation but in sharing resources, knowledge, and responsibility. Stability in one region of the world can strengthen stability in other places. We are connected and this is a very Christian idea. We are vulnerable. The myth of the modern world is that with enough technology, enough money, enough laws, we are secure. All of these can help. But the challenges of nature (whether they be tsunamis, earthquakes, drought or pandemics) remind us that we are always vulnerable. We are not God! This is good to remember as we journey through life. Finally, I want to congratulate our Confirmation candidates on this important day. You have journeyed many years to become full members of the church and we are proud of you. I hope you remember to think of and express gratitude to the wonderful catechists who have helped you and your parents who have supported you. In Christ,

Father Mike

PART-TIME MAINTENANCE POSITION Our Lady of the Woods is looking for a part-time maintenance person. This is a twenty-hour a week position, which can be extended to twenty-four hours in times of particular need. Regular hours will be as-signed but flexibility is needed. Generally, it is expected that on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the individual will be working days with afternoon and early evening hours. This individual will assist in routine cleaning; help in annual cleaning and in the maintenance of equipment; assist in the completion of projects for facility improvements; work with set up and take down for parish events; and perform other duties as needed.

Contact Father Mike for information.
