In the quarterfinal round, they defeated seven-time Tour winner Bill O’Neill and Shawn Stockman of the group BoyZ II Men, 68-48, and 2015 Rolltech PBA World Championship winner Gary Faulkner Jr. and former Major League All-Star pitcher and PBA50 Tour competitor John Burkett, 64-52, in the semifinal round. “It was probably a matter of time,” said Owens, who was making his third CP3 Invitational appearance. “I had bowled well in past events but it was a combination of being more consistent and having a great partner. “As the matches went on, the better I bowled and the bet- ter Pete and I were coming together as a team. The last thing you want to do is leave a split or tough spare because you don’t have any time to recover from it.” Guerrero and Solo eliminated Paul and three-time reign- ing PBA Player of the Year Jason Belmonte, 74-58, in their quarterfinal match before defeating nine-time PBA Tour winner Sean Rash and his partner, Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos running back C.J. Anderson, 78-67, in a close contest. Tied in the ninth frame with 49 each, Guerrero doubled in the 10th to clinch her team’s trip to the championship match. In the other quarterfinal matches, Burkett and Faulkner eliminated 18-time Tour winner Chris Barnes and former NFL defensive end and ESPN SportsNation co-host Marcellus Wiley, 99-49, while Rash and Anderson ousted defending CP3 Invitational champion and three-time Tour winner Ronnie Russell and multiple Olympic and World Championship track gold medalist Allyson Felix, 80-64. The event also included a celebrity sudden-death best ball “clash” which included additional celebrity guests Anthony Anderson, star of ABC-TV’s “Black-ish”, and hip hop artist Too Short. By Jerry Schneider - PBALOS ANGELES – In an evening of fun, glitz, bowling,

great athletes from other sports and entertainers pairing up

with the PBA’s best for competition, Los Angeles Clippers

All-Star guard Chris Paul has made a tradition out of rais-

ing awareness for a great cause through his CP3 PBA

Celebrity Invitational presented by GoBowling.com that

aired on ESPN.

In a “battle of the sexes” championship match contested

at Lucky Strike LA Live, the team of PBA Hall of Famer

Pete Weber and former NFL All-Pro receiver Terrell

Owens defeated international bowling star Clara Guerrero

and Olympic and World Cup women’s soccer gold medal-

ist Hope Solo, 78-54, in a special four-frame doubles for-

mat championship match.

On their way to the championship match of the event,

now in its seventh year, Weber and Owens beat two other

pro/celebrity teams. In the quarterfinal round, they defeated

seven-time Tour winner Bill O’Neill and Shawn Stockman

of the group BoyZ II Men, 68-48, and 2015 Rolltech PBA

World Championship winner Gary Faulkner Jr. and former

Major League All-Star pitcher and PBA50 Tour competitor

John Burkett, 64-52, in the semifinal round.

“It was probably a matter of time,” said Owens, who was

making his third CP3 Invitational appearance. “I had

bowled well in past events but it was a combination of

being more consistent and having a great partner.

“As the matches went on, the better I bowled and the bet-

ter Pete and I were coming together as a team. It’s like any

sport where you get more focused you get better results. I

really felt I had all the pieces of the puzzle in place,” Owens

continued. “I had the right ball and it left my hand clean, so

it was up to me to do my part for the team.”

For Weber, who ranks fourth on the list of all-time PBA

Tour title winners with 37 titles, it was his second CP3

Invitational win. In a 2012 trios contest, he won with actor

Jerry Ferrara and Paul’s L.A. Clippers teammate, forward

Blake Griffin.

“The ‘bad boys’ did good,” said Weber, using a play on

words related to his documentary, “The Bad Boy of

Bowling,” which premiered on ESPN’s 30 for 30 series just

a couple days before this competition. “Terrell and I

thought the ladies (Solo and Guerrero) would give us a

tough match because they were bowling well and we were

looking forward to that challenge. Hope was keeping the

ball in play and Clara was throwing strikes like she usually

does so we were going to have our work cut out for us.

“I was bowling a little conservative,” Weber added. “I

was throwing it harder and straighter to stay out of trouble.

The last thing you want to do is leave a split or tough spare

because you don’t have any time to recover from it.”

Guerrero and Solo eliminated Paul and three-time reign-

ing PBA Player of the Year Jason Belmonte, 74-58, in their

quarterfinal match before defeating nine-time PBA Tour

winner Sean Rash and his partner, Super Bowl champion

Denver Broncos running back C.J. Anderson, 78-67, in a

close contest. Tied in the ninth frame with 49 each,

Guerrero doubled in the 10th to clinch her team’s trip to the

championship match.

In the other quarterfinal matches, Burkett and Faulkner

eliminated 18-time Tour winner Chris Barnes and former

NFL defensive end and ESPN SportsNation co-host

Marcellus Wiley, 99-49, while Rash and Anderson ousted

defending CP3 Invitational champion and three-time Tour

winner Ronnie Russell and multiple Olympic and World

Championship track gold medalist Allyson Felix, 80-64.

The event also included a celebrity sudden-death best ball

“clash” which included additional celebrity guests Anthony

Anderson, star of ABC-TV’s “Black-ish”, and hip hop artist

Too Short. Burkett, who had a best PBA50 Tour finish of

fourth place in his 2015 rookie season, outlasted the other

celebrities by bowling a nine-count to Owens’ seven-count

in the ninth and final frame for the win.

The beneficiary of the CP3 event was the Chris Paul

Family Foundation which strives to positively impact indi-

viduals and families by providing resources that enrich and

strengthen healthy development of strong communities.

2 SPORTS REPORTER March 9 - 15, 2016

Last November, the International

Bowling Museum and Hall of

Fame unveiled a new “Frame for

Frame Project” that not only was

long overdue, but somehow man-

aged to capture the attention of

film lovers on a much higher plane

than bowling had ever done

before.

“Frame for Frame,” simply put,

is trying to raise money to digitize

and permanently save an estimat-

ed 500,000 feet of film that is

slowly-but-surely decaying in

canisters at the IBM/HF in

Arlington, Texas. It’s an initiative

spawned by Gregg Williams, who

was recently hired as IBM/HF

Director of Development.

Williams has proved to be a rare

case of an employee with limited

bowling background who came

into our sport and immediately

recognized a treasure chest that,

apparently, those much closer to

the subject either failed to compre-

hend or chose to ignore.

Back story: When the IBM/HF in

St. Louis was shutting down in

preparation to move to its new

location in Texas, four members of

the USBC public relations staff

(myself included) took a trip to St.

Louis to get an idea of what need-

ed to be moved. We were stunned

with what we found in storage:

Literally dozens of ancient 16mm

B&W film reels including such

programming as a women’s cham-

pionship bowling series held in

Chicago in the early 1950s – like-

ly put together by the late Sam

Weinstein – plus copies of All-Star

Bowling, Jackpot Bowling,

Celerity Bowling, etc.

Why were they hidden in a clos-

et? Because the IBM/HF had

never done anything to raise the

money needed to convert the film

to a more modern, permanent

medium.

Shortly thereafter, I was involved

in the cleansing of a huge base-

ment full of everything-you-can-

imagine at Bowling Headquarters

in Greendale, Wis. Unless some-

one recognized its value, every-

thing in the basement was headed

to a dumpster. Included were all of

the tapes of Ladies Pro Bowlers

Tour telecasts I had been involved

with, dating back to the early

1980s, including some one-of-a-

kind VHS tapes. I insisted the

tapes be saved because they were

irreplaceable.

I think they made the move to

Arlington, although I have no

proof.

Anyway, back to Gregg

Williams, who not only under-

stood the historical significance of

saving these films, but imagined

how clips might be converted to

income at some point – as back-

ground footage in films, vintage

commercials, composite videos

for sale to the public, etc. A little

imagination can often turn silver

(screen movie footage) to gold.

So IBM/HF created “Frame for

Frame” to raise money to begin

digitizing and cataloging these

invaluable resources.

The initial party was centered

around an invitation-only screen-

ing of a movie, “Sex, Death and

Bowling,” at IBM/HF in Arlington

where writer/director Ally Walker

(the wife of FX Network CEO

John Landgraf) was on hand. To

perk up mainstream interest in the

project, an exhibit featured clips

and highlights of several televi-

sion shows and movies that have

incorporated bowling. Those pro-

ductions also are part of the

IBM/HF archives.

The mainstream connection

prompted HollywoodReporter.com

to chime in, encouraging members

of the film industry to help raise the

$200,000 needed to do most of the

digitizing work. It would be a

shame, the website noted, if classic

bowling footage of Mickey

Rooney, Tiny Tim, Don Adams,

Jayne Mansfield and dozens more

is lost.

That could just be a start. As

Williams noted, “We don’t even

know what we have. We could be

sitting on a treasure trove of stuff.”

So if you needed a reason to

make a donation to the IBM/HF,

now you have one.

LODI, NJ - In perhaps the biggest surprise in the North 1B Sectionals

[Hudson, Passaic and Sussex County], a young Clifton squad came away with

the Group 4 title and advanced to the State Tournament at Carolier Lanes in

North Brunswick. The Mustangs sat in fourth place behind powerhouse

favorites Dickinson and Passaic Tech heading into game three when they broke

loose for an outstanding 1048 to shock the leaders and snare the title.

Finishing big in the finale were freshmen Joe Paolillo [255] and Nick

Innacome [210] while freshman star Johann Gamo, who led his team’s league

play in the Big North with a 200+ mark, fired a 619 set to put Clifton on top.

Passaic County champion West Milford finished runner-up to St Peter’s Prep

in Group 3 to join the Marauders down at Carolier. It’s the fourth visit to North

Brunswick for the Highlanders in the past six years and this year’s ticket can be

largely attributed to strong finishes by Andrew Finke [248] and Matt Goldberg

[234]. Sussex Tech, as expected, easily took Group 2, but the Big North’s

Lakeland quintet had to win a Baker style playoff, 170-153 over Lenape Valley

to advance with the Ravens. NJIC Colonial Division Champ Hawthorne added

the Group I Sectional Title to its list of this season’s successes behind a spectac-

ular outing from junior Steve Plaszky whose second place individual 736 three-

some sends him to the state individual tournament as well. The top two teams in each of the four groups as well as the nine best individual scor-
