Seven Mountains Scholarships Interested in attending a summer music camp, private lessons or
have another idea for bluegrass learning? SMBA may be able to
help. Each year our Association awards scholarships to help
fund bluegrass learning opportunities for our members ages 18
and under. In the past we have funded attendees for jam camps,
various instrument camps, lessons and other learning opportuni-
ties. If you are interested, please e-mail our scholarship com-
mittee chair at [email protected]. Include name,
address and other contact information, as well as the learning
opportunity in which you plan to participate. Please provide any
other information the committee would find helpful such as your
years of experience and how and why you got interested in blue-
grass. We look forward to helping advance bluegrass learning in our area. Applications will be considered at any time.
Payments will be made directly to the camps or instructors.
INSIDE THE SMBA
THE PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
DICK BECKLEY
As we begin another year, and my 4th year as your President, your Board of Trustees has grown from 4 to 6 members, the result of a change in our by-laws voted on by our Officers and Board. I have appointed Mike Foster, our newsletter editor, and Sue McKinsey, our public-ity chairman, to the 2 new positions. Sue and Mike have been at all our board meetings since they've held these positions. I felt that that they deserved to be the two new members of the Board and thus have voting privileges at our meetings as the rest of us have. Their services and ideas have been, and are, very valuable to the rest of us as we conduct SMBA business.
Regretfully, I've had to accept the resignation of Bill Aldinger as a Board member as he has asked to not be included in the new board. Bill has been of great help to me and I've valued his expertise on all matters, as a former President of SMBA. I will miss his contributions greatly. I have appointed Ruth Ann Berney to take Bill's place on the Board and feel confident that she will do a great job for us.
We have decided to have a band again this year for our annual picnic and will have the Baltimore Bluegrass Band at Allenberry on Saturday July 27th. Please mark this date early on your calen-dar and plan to attend.
Our Music Committee has met and we have booked 5 bands for the 2013-14 season which starts in Oct 2013. We have added the dates of Nov 30, 2013 and Mar 29, 2014, both 5th Satur-days of the month, to our schedule, so we will have 10 shows next season. Our Association is becoming a destination that national traveling bands wish to play and we are getting more re-
quests to play here and have decided to ex-pand our schedule. Please make every effort to come out and support our shows as we grow.
On Dec 29th, I lost a friend and bluegrass lost the greatest resonator guitar player the world has ever known when Mike Auldridge passed away, one day short of his 74th birthday. Ka-ren and I attended Mike's funeral, which was really a celebration of his life. Attendees were like a who's who in bluegrass, and the recep-tion after was a 4 hour+ musical celebration of Mike's life. On Feb 12th, we again attended a Tribute to Mike at the Birchmere, in Alexan-dria, VA, organized by Jerry Douglas. The event sold out in 3 hours and again, an all-star lineup came from all over the US to play a 4 hour show featuring the resonator guitar he made so famous. Jerry Douglas, Rob Ickes, Sally Van Meter, Fred Travers, and Jay Star-ling were featured on the dobro and led an all-star cast of vocalists and pickers to honor Mike. We felt very fortunate to be one of the lucky ones who got tickets.
In closing this month's President's Message I would like to mention a new Rural Rhythm pro-ject "God Didn't Choose Sides", a musical sto-ry of real people of the Civil War and Gettys-burg. Many of the songs on this CD were writ-ten or co-written by a good friend of ours, Pau-la Breedlove. Paula and her husband, John, spent quite a bit of time in Gettysburg re-searching material for this CD, and the results show that she did her research well. It is an outstanding CD and, I think, it will be a leading contender for Album of the year at this year's IBMA Awards. Our March and April concerts will feature two of the bands on this CD, Dale Ann Bradley and Steve Gulley, and the Lone-some River Band. SMBA will get an early pre-view of some of this CD. For more information, you can Google; http://www.goddidntchoosesides.com This is a wonderful musical history lesson on the real people of the Civil War and is well worth your time.

The International Bluegrass Music Museum SMBA is listed as one of only 5 current association members of The International Bluegrass Music Museum.
To check this out simply enter www.bluegrass-museum.org, click on membership and giving, on the list of options on the left side of your screen. Then scroll down again to associations under membership and giving, again on the left of the screen. There are 5 associations currently listed there at the bottom of the Assn. Membership blurb. We are one of them. Then again go to the list on the left of your screen and click on Worldwide Bluegrass. Click again on the left under Worldwide Bluegrass on Bluegrass Associations and scroll down to Seven Mountains. This is a link to our website. A well spent donation to IBMM on our part as we get the benefit of a worldwide link to our website, national recognition as a member association and we help in funding the activities of the IBMM.
This is an outstanding museum and one that the bluegrass community and our members can be proud of, and a desti-nation worth the trip for anyone interested in bluegrass and it's history.

SMBA CONCERT BAND BIOS - WRITTEN BY DICK BECKLEY
March 9 - Dale Ann Bradley
Not much needs to be said about Dale Ann. She's the
current reigning IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year, a 4
time winner of that award, and possesses the voice of
an angel. Her singing mate and long time friend from
their Renfro Valley Barn Dance days is Steve Gulley, a
founding member of the super group, Mountain Heart.
Steve's renditions of a George Jones song or other clas-
sic country artists are memorable, and the duets of Dale
Ann and Steve are one of a kind ( outstanding). The
great Phil Ledbetter, a former dobro player of the year
has recently joined Dale Ann and the band. His addition promises to make this band a serious can-
didate for Instrumental Band of the Year in 2013. The rest of the Band consists of some combina-
tion of powerhouse vocalist Kim Fox, Mike Sumner on Banjo, Multi-Instrumentalist Clint Hurd, Bryan
Turner on Bass, and Greg Hodge on Guitar and Mandolin. This is another blockbuster show that
you can't afford to miss. No matter who shows up with Dale Ann and Steve, you will be treated to
some of the best bluegrass available.
April 13 - Lonesome River Band
April's entertainment will be the fabulous Lonesome Riv-
er Band. Led by master banjoist, and perennial IBMA
award winner, Sammy Shelor, LRB consists of Lead Vo-
calist Brandon Rickman on Guitar, Mike Hartgrove on
fiddle, Barry Reed on bass and harmony vocals, and the
newest member, Randy Jones on lead and harmony vo-
cals. In my opinion this is the strongest lineup in all the
years LRB has been around and there have been many
fine pickers and singers pass thru this fine band. Brandon Rickman possesses one of the strongest
and most recognizable voices in bluegrass. I remember Brandon from his very first festival perfor-
mance with New Tradition when he played at the Fox Family Festival in the mid 90's. I knew then
that I was seeing the beginning of the career of one of the great young vocalists of this generation.
Sammy's banjo sets the pace for one of the most popular bands in bluegrass. We are fortunate to
have them play our venue. Please make every effort not to miss this great band.

SMBA CONCERT BAND BIOS - WRITTEN BY DICK BECKLEY
May 11 - Reno and Harrell
Attendees for our may show will be in for a real treat
this year to close out our 2012-13 concert series. We
originally booked this act as Mitch Harrell and the Vir-
ginians, but Mitch recently informed me that he has
joined forces with Don Wayne and Dale Reno to form
Reno and Harrell. This band will, I promise, entertain
you royally and keep you in stitches, laughing, the
whole evening. They will be doing the songs of their
Dads, the late, great Don Reno and Bill Harrell, as well
as some of their own. The Reno Brothers recently re-
turned to the US after several years touring Europe as "Hayseed Dixie", performing country-rock
and acquiring a sizable following there. The band consists of Mitch Harrell on Guitar and vocals,
Don Wayne Reno on Banjo and vocals, Dale Reno on Mandolin and vocals, and Robbie Wells on
Fiddle. I just received this week, an e-mail from Ron Spears that he was the new bass player for the
group. Ron has played our stage with several other groups in the past. This promises to be an out-
standing evening of great bluegrass and is sure to bring back some memories of the past. It will al-
so be one of the very first public performances of this fine new band.
