Total Marks : 60 M Time : 3 Hrs

I) Answer all the questions 10 x 2 = 20 M

1) Define power of a convex lens. What is its unit?

2) What is the importance of Oersted’s experiment?

3) Define Magnetic declination.

4) A short bar magnet placed with its axis at 30° with an external field of 800x10-4

T experience a torque of 0.016 N-m. What is the magnetic moment of its magnet?

5) What is meant by wattless component of current.

6) What are the applications of microwaves?

7) What is work function?

8) What is the de Broglie Wavelength associated with an electron accelerated through a potential difference of 100 volts?

9) Draw the circuit symbols for P-N-P and N-P-N transistors.

10) What is World Wide Web?

II) Answer any six of the following questions 6x4=24 M

11) Define critical angle. Explain total internal reflection using a neat diagram.

12) Explain Doppler effect in light. Distinguish between red shift and blue shift.

13) Derive an expression for the intensity of the electric field at a point on the axial line of an electric dipole.

14)Three Capacitors of capacitance 2µF, 3µF and 4µF are connected in parallel.i) What is the total capacitance of the combination?

ii) Determine the charge on each capacitor, if the combination is connected to a 200V supply.

15)What are the basic components of a cyclotron, mention its uses.

16)Describe the ways in which Eddy currents are used to advantage.

17)Explain the different types of spectral series.

18)Distinguish between half-wave and full wave rectifiers.

III) Answer any two of the following questions 2x8=16M

19)What is Doppler effect. Obtain an expression for the apparent frequency of sound heard when the source is in motion with respect to an observer at rest.

20)a) State Kirchoff’s laws for an electrical network. Using these laws deduce the condition for balance in a wheat stone bridge.

b) Three identical resistors are connected in parallel and total resistance of the circuit is R/3. Find the value of each resistance.

21)Explain the principle and working of a nuclear reactor with the help of a labeled diagram.
