Starred Up is a powerful film thatturns an unflinching eye to thecruelty depicted within the fictional

prison walls, while at the same timerevealing hidden layers of camaraderieand hope amidst the violence. The focus ison emotional truth not stylization or glam-orization. Also woven into the narrative aredetails about prison life that we have notoften seen before, details which arerevealed here with authority. Despite thetensions within the film, director DavidMackenzie’s perspective is ultimately acompassionate one.

Rising star Jack O’ Connell gives Eric anedgy, unpredictable energy that carriesmuch of the story, and his plight is framedby two opposing forces: his father and histherapist. Australian veteran actor BenMendelsohn creates an explosive picture

of a man twisted by the system and unableto prove himself as a father. Mendelsohn, who gave a terrifying performance in themulti-award-winning “Animal Kingdom”,shows great sensitivity beneath the violentfaçade. At the other extreme is Eric’stherapist, portrayed by Rupert Friend, acharacter who might just crack, and whomay have a secret history of violence. In away that reflects the protagonist's ownexperience, we the audience don’t knowwho to trust – father, therapist, or neither.

In an attempt to capture the tension andraw immediacy of the story, Mackenzieshot the film in sequence and edited witha two-editor crew – including long termcollaborator Jake Roberts – to get resultsalmost immediately after they were shot. This energy is amplified by Mackenzie’scareful preparation with the cast who were

bars, but the prison’s unconventional therapist (rupert Friend) is determined to help

eric find a way through, assisted by of one of the prison’s longest serving inmates

given the freedom to explore the materialand inhabit their characters, producingperformances that are alive andunpredictable.

With “Starred Up”, we see a filmmakerachieving maturity, paradoxically throughhis embrace of greater simplicity. We alsosee the emergence of a new energetic andimportant talent with O’Connell creatingwhat may be his signature role in years tocome.

“I think he’s a really fine, important actorwith an incredible future ahead of him,”says director David Mackenzie about hislead, Jack O’Connell. O’Connell plays theultra-violent Eric with an extraordinaryphysical presence – “when Eric’s cell dooropens,” says one fellow cast member,“there aren’t too many words...there aren’ttoo many needed.” O’Connell has a greatdeal of empathy for the kind of characterhe plays: “Is he a brat, a little shit, or is heolder than his years? I decided to go withthe latter and I modelled it on blokes Iused to know at school. I wanted to makean adult of him at 19. He’s had to grow upfast. Because of his upbringing, his mumbeing a prostitute and all, he’s missed outon being a kid...He’s got a brain as well. Ifsomeone’s physically handy and intelligentthen he’s twice as dangerous.”

Eric embarks on a difficult journey of self-discovery and for O’Connell the film was alearning experience, one facilitated by histrust in the director: “You can’t work on afilm like this if you’ve got any egobaggage,” says O’Connell. “That’s what’swonderful about working with David. There’s nothing precious about him at all. It’s like it’s everybody’s film and not just hisfilm.” Trust was not just a theme in thefilm but a strong component of filming. With the actors pushing themselves

physically to the edge, a special kind oftrust evolved in acting out the scenes ofextreme violence: “It’s vital. You need to beable to put yourself into those situationscompletely to be convincing, but you needto know there are limits. I still managed tobust my hand one day! I think it shows howfar you have to take a film like this if it’sgoing to look real.”

O’Connell has played gritty parts before infilms where violence and retribution werekey themes, but “Starred Up” offereddifferent challenges: “I’ve always likedprison movies, but not just any prisonmovies. They need to get the morality rightto interest me, and this one had a great bigquestion right in the middle of it. You hadto think: is this guy – and this guy is me –going to make it? Is he going to comethrough? What’s he going to come throughas?” To embed his role even further in acredible reality, O’Connell took risks: “Idecided not to read the ending and knowwhat was going to happen to me, I’mlearning the lines the night before… itmeans I was reacting to things just as theywere happening, thinking on my feet… Idon’t even know the ending, which meansI can’t give anything away. I think it gives alot more depth.” As a result, O’Connell’sperformance has a knife-edge focus on‘the now’: "It was really exciting for me asan actor to try to unravel the head spacehe’s in.” O'Connell felt the importance ofhaving a tight team spirit among the cast:“I don’t say this lightly, but hands downthis is one of the strongest casts I’ve everbeen with. The raw talent and intelligenceand good decision-making – I really thinkit’s a formula that’s few and far between.I’m really grateful to David for that. As aresult, I think we’ve been able to achievemy proudest work to date.” O’Connellholds Mackenzie in high regard: “I was inawe of him, from the beginning.”

CORE FILM

From Phil Lord and Christopher Millercomes 'The Lego Movie' which may soundlike something made for the under 10s,however, don't put be fooled becausebehind the title is a film of originality, witand colourful characters that may evenplease the adults more than the kids.

This 3D computer animated story followsEmmet (Chris Pratt), an ordinary Legofigure who goes about each day accordingto the rules. His life is as average as itcomes, however, when he is mistaken forthe most extraordinary person and the keyto saving the world, things turn upsidedown for him. As he is whisked away fromhis daily routine and taken into a fellowshipof strangers on a quest to stop an eviltyrant, Emmet is relied upon to be the hero,an hilarious concept with even morehilarious consequences. This loveable Legocharacter will have you rooting for him ashe tries to convince his followers that he is

up to the task.

This movie has something for everyone, thekids will be drawn into the colourful worldof Lego as the good guys and bad guys fightit out, and for everyone else there is sheerlighthearted fun that provides the perfectbreak between some of the more seriousand thought provoking Oscar moviesaround at the moment.

With a script filled with humour and asuperb voice cast including MorganFreeman and Will Ferell to deliver it, thesemuch loved Lego figures are brought to lifelike never before and will keep you laughingthroughout.

If you are lucky enough to have beendragged along to see this by a kid then youare in for a treat. Whatever age you are, 'TheLego Movie' is definitely worth watching.

Pretty needn’t mean softand delicate. Take inspi-ration from the latesttrend of doing pretty onyour own terms.

When you think of power dressing youinevitably conjure up images of the shoulderpadded suits of the 1980s or Joan Collinsand Linda Evans doing battle in the groundsof the Dynasty set. Power pretty is different;it’s taking this year’s clothing trends forpastels, florals and delicate fabrics and, rather than pairing these soft hues witheven softer makeup, it’s opting to injectsome drama into the face and hair. Here’sour take on a classic power pretty look forSpring/Summer 2014.

Most will agree that the days of strong lipsand eyes combined have long gone as it’shard to pull off and can look too theatricalin day-to-day life. By focusing on a state-ment eye or immaculately applied lip andkeeping the other features more muted incomparison, it is by no means subtle butensures that you keep the main focus of thelook.

Instead of using light eyeshadows to matchyour spring colours, power pretty meanstaking it darker. Choose a deeper versionof what you would normally opt for anddon’t be afraid to really define the eye andline both around the lashes and inside thewater line for maximum impact. The key is

to buff and blend out with a clean blendingbrush (a classic being a MAC 217). Mascarais a must but a key mistake often made isto layer it on until the lashes become cakedand clogged. To keep it power pretty youshould opt for a high performance productsuch as Lancome Hypnose mascara whichonly requires a light application to volumiseand lengthen to full effect. Don’t be afraidto wear a false lash either, just don’t makeit too thick and heavy. Instead opt for adefining yet natural lash such as EyelureNatural Volume 020. Brows must bedefined or you’ll lose impact but, again, blending is key to avoid the dreaded blockbrows!

We’ve used brights on the cheeks and lipswhich encapsulates the power pretty look ofconfidence in your colour choices. If you arefocusing on the lips rather than eyes thentake the eye colour a little lighter so that youcan maximise the impact of the lips withprecision lining, lipstick and gloss applica-tion. Your colour palette is limitless and it’syour choice if you’d rather go deep anddark, ultra glossy or with a stronglypigmented pastel such as IllamasquaBlueberry Violet Intense Lipgloss.

Have fun with the power pretty look and useit to experiment with colour choices that youwouldn’t normally make. Spring/Summeris a great time to have a little fun with yourstyle and simply adding to your makeupcollection with some key colours will openup a whole new avenue of power prettyoptions to take you through the subsequentseasons.

CORE MUSIC

This album almost passed me by at thetime. However it was the talk of the pub -just like Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ - and thetopic of many a muso conversation. “What’sit like?” I asked. “It’s a sort of cross betweenThe Beatles and the Sex Pistols”. Thatstatement in itself was enough to make meborrow a copy from a friend to see if themusic matched the hype. Sure enough theMcCartney mop-topped musical magpiethat is Noel Gallagher had merged Beatles7th chords and harmonies with the Panzer-like power of the Pistols. It was jawdroppingly inspiring. Amidst a cultishmusic scene of shoegazing and effeteintrospection, suddenly here was a bandthat proclaimed that they wanted to be thebiggest in the world. But equally asimportant as the soul-stirring music wasthe beauty and attitude of front man LiamGallagher. He took the Lydon drawl andvacant stage stare and welded it to his JohnLennon fixation. He was modishlyhandsome and took Ian Brown’s Mancunianbragaddocio to another level. He seemed toembody Lydon’s proclamation in the Pistolssingle “We mean it maaaan!” so much so

that a recording of the sibling rivalryargument between Noel and Liam aboutattitude and music was recoreded and soldas a bootleg CD.

20 years on the album has lost none of it’spower. Although the band would go on torecord further classics, they never evermatched the spirit of this incredible album. They were hungry for success and theeuphoria of them being on the precipice offinally becoming Rock ‘n’ Roll stars oozesfrom every groove. It is fair to say that itleans more towards a punk aesthetic thana Mod one, the latter of which would be thetemplate for most of the music that wouldfollow.

‘Definitely Maybe’ was an album to playbefore going out on the town, it was aboutself confidence, attitude and evenarrogance. Like the best Oasis tracks it wasanthemic and thus appealed to footballfans. Arguably, Oasis outstayed theirwelcome, but on this, their blisteringlyincandescent debut, they shiiiiiiiiiiiiiine.•

Pasquetta Tutti al Gardino!

Pasqua (Easter Sunday) in Italy iscelebrated in the customary waywith friends and family round the

table and plenty of food. When mammothfeast is over and friends and family havegone home, everyone goes to bed safe inthe knowledge that tomorrow, EasterMonday, will involve more eating! Knownas La Pasquetta (little Easter), EasterMonday in Italy is the encore to eatingperformance that was Pasqua.

La Pasquetta is traditionally celebratedoutdoors as the spring sun in Italy has realheat behind it and for most of us here inScotland it would feel like a warm sum-mer’s day. Italians pack up all the leftoversfrom Easter Sunday and head for the hills,

or in some cases the beach, where it iscustomary to share your culinarycreations with whoever you meet. I havefond memories of spending Easter in Italy. One of my most vivid memories is being inthe countryside on La Pasquetta enjoyingthe leftovers, I would always hunt outsome of my mum’s delicious frittata (seerecipe on page 26), and watching in aston-ishment an open fire was lit, an iron standwas placed over the fire and on went alarge pot containing few kilos of pasta!!

At Celino’s we are opening, for the firsttime, on Easter Monday. So if the Scottishweather rules out a picnic in the country-side or on the beach, why not come alongand celebrate La Pasquetta with us.

CORE MoNEy

Financial Planning is all about achievinggoals in life, it’s not just about buying prod-ucts like a pension plan or an ISA. Forexample it might involve putting appropriatewills in place to protect your family, thinkingabout how your dependants will managewithout your income should you become illor die prematurely, so giving rationalthought about all of these things togethershould help you formulate a sound financialplan. You can implement a plan on yourown, or if your needs are more complex youmight want to engage a Financial Planner.

Creating a sound financial plan usuallycomprises six steps as follows: 1. Establish your goals in life - short, medium and of course long term. 2. Work out what assets and liabilities youhave - write them down and save some-where. 3. Evaluate your current financial position -how close are you to achieving your goals? 4. Develop your plan – create a “route map”for achieving your various goals. 5. Implement your plan – make the changesand make it happen. 6. Monitor and review your plan - at leastyearly and make adjustments when needed

Start by working out your goals in life byPrioritising and think about the likelycurrent expenditure required to meet thosegoals and when you will need the money. This will enable you to plan your finances towork out how to achieve future objectives.Don’t forget you also have to plan for someof the hurdles you may have to overcometoo. It’s about being structured and takingcontrol of your finances rather than lettingyour finances control you.

By planning your finances to meet yourgoals you will gain much greaterconfidence of where you are going in life, reducing your stress levels and begin toenjoy life more. Attaining control and peaceof mind through knowing whether you’re ontrack to achieve the future you want for youand your family, the first step is deciding tomake these important goals a reality.

See you next month.
