This March our local chapter of Sigma Chi hosted their annual Derby Days. This tradition

originated in 1933 at University of California - Berkley as “Channing Way Derby”, and

quickly spread throughout the Sigma Chi chapters across the country. Chapters host

events such as, but not limited to: skits, track and field activities, and also other various

competitions. Between 1992 and 1993, The Sigma Chi Fraternity adopted The Children’s

Miracle Network and The Huntsman Cancer Institute as their National Philanthropy’s

and beneficiaries of funds raised through Derby Days.

This year the Men of Sigma Chi scheduled a weeks worth of events for Derby Days,

including bowling and billiards in the bullpen and a fish fry. Due to scheduling conflicts

and bad weather conditions, Sigma Chi was forced to cancel a number of the events.

Despite the problems Sigma Chi was faced with, they were still able to raise a over $300

which was divided up between The Children’s Miracle Network and The Huntsman

Cancer Institute.

This spring MSU - Mankato welcomed the first culturally based

Fraternity to the Greek Community, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc.

The fraternity was founded on September 19, 1963 at Morgan State

University (Baltimore, Maryland) as a predominantly African-

American fraternity. The organization, billed as a “social service

fraternity,” has partnerships with organizations that promote cul-

tural education, health and youth development, and the addressing

of the pattern of “father-less-ness” in the African American Com-

munity. There are currently over 300 chapters of Iota Phi Theta

Fraternity Inc. in 40 states.

The founding members of the Theta Theta Chapter of Iota Phi

Theta Fraternity Inc. consists of: Tyrone Carter, James Gregory,

Tibyus Hill, Maurice Smith Jr., and Darone Spears. Since that

beginning, the group has focused on educating its members about the international organization’s

history and operations. They have participated in weekly community service projects and have

worked collaboratively with other student organizations on campus to do programming that en-

hances the college experience for others, especially students from traditionally underrepresented

populations.

We as a Greek Community would like to again welcome the Brothers of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity

Inc. into our community!

Letter from the Editors…

We would like to sincerely apologize for the delay on the past month’s newsletters, as we have been very busy documenting all of the Chapter’s various events. We hope you enjoy the compilation of March, April, and May’s events. Have a wonderful summer!

This year’s Greek Week was themed “Magic in the Air” and was a huge suc-

cess! The big draw on Tuesday was the Lip Sync competition and with an un-

expected light show, Gamma Phi Beta took home the win. The “Wizard of

the First Order” competition took place on Tuesday night and Vinson Wil-

liams claimed this title through his catchy talent of singing Disney

songs. Wednesday the chapters came together to donate more than 5,000

clothing items to the Salvation Army and Quidditch made its first appearance

in Greek Week history with Lambda Chi Alpha winning the house cup. The

final event of the week was the Boat Regatta, an event where each chapter had

to construct a boat made only from duct tape and cardboard. Delta Chi sailed

away with the grand prize for this competition. In the end only one winner

could claim the title of the 2013 winners of Greek Week and this year the title

went to Sigma Sigma Sigma as announced at the Greek Banquet which round-

ed out Greek Week.

This April the Men of Delta Chi hosted their inaugural “V-Week” and Earthball Tour-

nament. “V-Week” originated out of Northern Illinois University and has rapidly spread

across the Delta Chi chapters. The men of Delta Chi sold wristbands to raise money for

the Jimmy V. Foundation for Cancer Research, and

offered a “free” meal to those who purchased a

wristband.

On the Friday of “V-Week”, Delta Chi hosted their

Earthball Tournament. Several members from the

Greek Community joined in on the competition,

and enjoyed free hotdogs and the beautiful weather.

Delta Chi was able to raise over $400, all of which

were donated towards The V Foundation.

Kickin’ it for Cancer Research

This spring, Alpha Chi Omega and Lambda Chi Alpha joined together to create a new

philanthropy event called the Watermelon Bust. The chapters were unfortunately snowed

out for their original date in March, but

were able to host their event on April 27

and had beautiful weather in the high

60s. Multiple activities involving water-

melon were conducted and all proceeds

from the event benefited both chapters’

local philanthropies (CADA House and

North American Food Drive).

Collaborating for a Cause

A Ph.D. student, a post-doc, and their professor are walking through a city park and they find an antique oil lamp. They rub it and a Genie comes out in a puff of smoke.

The Genie says, "I usually only grant three wishes, so I'll give each of you just one."

"Me first! Me first!" says the Ph.D. student.

"I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat with a gorgeous woman."

Poof! He's gone.

"Me next! Me next!" says the post-doc. "I want to be in Hawaii, relaxing on the beach with a professional hula dancer on one side and a Mai Tai on the other."

Poof! He's gone.

"You're next," the Genie says to the professor.

The professor says, "I want those guys back in the lab after lunch."
